Fake it till you make it.

That’s Lexi Hall, the wild socialite’s motto for how to live life.

Single and allergic to commitment, Lexi is having the time of her life. Or is she? With a new promotion at the art gallery, and her colorful lifestyle as bright as ever, she swears she has no interest in slowing down. When Lexi receives a phone call that can change her career, she pounces on the opportunity. But what this outgoing diva doesn’t plan for is her new client, the closed off, secluded artist, Hunter James. Fighting to draw the line between work and pleasure, it’s up to Lexi to figure out how to balance her fake life for something real.

Hunter James is an artist without a muse. Lacking the beauty in his life that he craves, his art is beginning to suffer. Unfortunately for the mysterious artist, a past mistake also tarnishes his trust in women. Forced to take a meeting with an art gallery dealer, he accepts knowing he’ll turn her down. He turns them all down. But what he doesn’t anticipate is for the seductive bombshell to turn his world upside down. As his body and mind come alive, he vows to stop at nothing to have her on his canvas and in his bed.

JD Hollyfield is a new author to me so I had no idea what to expect when I picked up Faking It. Fun is the first word that comes to mind. It was a fun book, with a sassy, yet surprisingly relatable heroine. I loved that it made me laugh lots, it had just the right amount of steaminess and was well paced and well written.
I, Lexi Hall, want to change. To be loved. To be cherished… Problem is, I don’t know how to go about doing it. I’ve spent so long faking how happy I am living free and alive in the warmth of San Fransisco, when in reality, I am lonelier than I have ever been.

Lexi Hall works for an art gallery. She is good at her job. She has a great best friend, and is relatively content with her life. But she’s lonely. She does a great job faking it, but deep down, she wants more from life. She’ll only admit that to herself though… When Lexi goes out of town for work to meet an elusive artist, Hunter James, the last thing she expects is to be attracted to him, drawn to him, enamored by him. And it goes both ways. Hunter has never seen someone he’s wanted to paint more. He needs Lexi to be his muse. And he’ll do just about anything to get her.

 photo 0CEA285A-119E-4604-B97C-24AD1C13E16E_zpsidzxxfcc.jpg

Lexi begrudgingly agrees to Hunter’s conditions and lets him paint her. In the process, they spend more time together and connect. Hunter isn’t an open guy. He’s not the type of man to talk about himself or share his secrets. It takes a lot for Lexi to get anything out of him. I spent the first part of the book wondering what made Hunter James the way he was. This successful and rich artist who is a little broody and keeps to himself. Then I got my answer. And it all made sense. It takes a little time, but Lexi starts to pull Hunter out of his shell a bit. I loved watching their time together, seeing their relationship grow and Hunter open up some. It’s sweet and sexy, but more than that, it’s funny! I loved all of Lexi’s antics.

 photo ECD2E07E-9E52-4F81-BBEA-68211BCC84E5_zpsdmlr6trv.jpg

Hunter and Lexi just work together. They are one of those couples that compliment each other completely. Of course a few things happen that causes a little angst and difficulty, but things get figured out rather quickly. I wish there would have been a bit more before the end, but the epilogue was fantastic, so I was one happy reader by the final chapter!

If you’re looking for a stand-alone that’s fun, sexy, laugh out loud and entertaining, look no further. Faking It is a book you’ll want to pick up!

1.5 - 2 Stars!!

Not really in the mood to write a review for this one since I barely liked it and I honestly don't like to write negative reviews...but before you try this one you have to know a couple of things:

* if you're allergic to instas as much as I am (esp insta-love), then this book is not for you since there's insta-lust from the moment the two MC meet an insta-love which btw didn't fell believable at all, since they apparently fell for each other after a couple of days (less than a week if I remember correctly)

* the two main characters are shallow, one-dimensional and sooo boring...I almost fell asleep

- the heroine refer to herself in the third person so many f@cking times. Honestly it wasn't clever like maybe it was supposed to be...it was annoying as sh*t

* the plot is underdeveloped and at times so damn predictable

* the hero's lines are soooo soooo cheesy that almost made me puck

* there's a lot of unnecessary drama that annoyed the crap out of me and made me roll my eyes more times than I like to admit

* the epilogue was the cheesiest epilogue I've ever read

I am in the minority with my opinion, so keep in mind that just because it didn't work for me, doesn't mean it won't work for you.

Happy reading!

THREE FAKE IT STARS

"I never want to let you go ..."

Reading a JD Hollyfield book is like having a pyjama day at home; easy, relaxed and plenty of fun. This author is definitely one of my 'go to' writers for comedy and romance and once again I was delighted to spend my time enjoying her work.

What did I Love?
This author has crazy good writing talent, her sex scenes in this novel were hot and believable and I especially enjoyed the moments where the author was comical - for me those were the shining parts of the story telling. I found myself falling into like with the heroine and even with the 'did she really do/say that' moments she won me over. JD has a way of making you feel like the characters could be your real life friends and the author definitely has a talent of creating hilarious, giggle inducing, original story telling. Most of the book read well as a romantic comedy which is always a trope that makes me sit up and take notice but in addition and what gave this book an edge was the authors erotic writing and for my tastes this worked well.

description

Why not five?
Let me start by saying that this was a solidly likeable book. The author obviously loved writing this book, and it shows. There was ample material to love but not enough for myself to personally fall completely in love. One of the things I crave with any of the books that I read is to fall in love with the characters and feel a certain connection and I didn't quite have that here. Yes, I could appreciate the authors talent and ability to make me laugh and at times feel a little weak at the knees but overall the story didn't grab my attention like I would have liked.

description

Final thoughts ...
JD has created a novel that hosts an engaging heroine with a fun storyline that for the most part grabbed my attention and even though I felt the story needed more sexual tension and I would have liked to have felt more connected to the hero I still enjoyed getting to 'know' these characters. JD Hollyfield most definitely has a lot to offer the romance reading world. Her books are often hilariously witty and steamy hot. 'Faking it' was an all round enjoyable standalone that left me feeling satisfied. I'm more than happy to read books by this author in the future and I'll happily spend my time reading releases to come. Hopefully this will be a novel that will win you over. Enjoy, readers ... Kisses.

Sassy and Fun this book had a perfect balance of everything I love in a good Romantic comedy book. Author J.D. Hollyfield takes us into the life of Lexi Hall who is all about being single and free, and a highly sought after artist she is set out to convince to consign with the gallery she works for. Well neither Hunter nor Lexi realize what is about to unravel between them throughout their time together. I loved the laugh out loud moments, and enjoyed getting lost in a sweet, funny, and sexy read all at the same time! I absolutely gave this book a 5 star rating and recommend for a mature audience. Great story from J.D. I look forward to more from her in the future!

Faking It by J.D. Hollyfield ruined me for all other funny books! This author is a excellent in her craft and truly knows how to weave hilarity, tender moments, and angst all into one book. I found myself laughing, crying, chewing my fingernails to little nubs, and then laughing again. She definitely took my heart on a rollercoaster ride and I'll be the first to jump on her next one.

Lexi was an adorable character. If you loved Becca from Sophia Kinsella's Shopoholic series, you'll love Lexi Hall. She was funny, wild, and really made a mess of things. Her character always made me smile and at times I hurt for her when life got a little too hard.

"It's like I'm in high school again and my first crush just complimented my Trapper Keeper."

Hunter James was intense. I'm a sucker for serious, flawed, and secretive heroes and Hunter was all of these. Despite his desire to be a reclusive, brooding artist, Lexi brought him out of his world and turned it upside down.

"You just bewilder me is all. I have never in my existence been so entranced by someone's entire being."

To say these two had chemistry is an understatement.

"I don't know what you're doing to me, but I need to consume every part of you."

Whenever they were around each other they were explosive. It was a very steamy read that had me flipping the pages as quickly as I could.

"Then you must know the effect kissing you has on a man. It's like heaven and hell intertwined."

If you're looking for a story that has it all, Faking It will deliver in more ways than you can imagine. I highly recommend this steamy, hilarious book!

"If my vagina had hands, it would hold out her plate asking for seconds."

5 "I WANT TO BE HUNTER'S TOMORROW" STARS!

A funny, light and quick reading wrapped in a hot package.

I have not realized how much I needed a good laugh, until Lexi here, gave me a good damn time!!

While reading Faking it, you are not only getting a girl who is going to make you laugh your ass off, but also a grumpy artist who is going to have you wishing you were his muse. *And that he uses paint all over you*. And if you are not happy with this, you also get a little taste of angstttttttttt, yeah, that chapter, I was like wait, this is not happeninggggg! Not cool, Miss Hollyfield, you played with my feelings.

I love when I finish reading a book with a smile on my face, and Lexi & Hunter definitely did the work and I ended smiling like a fool.

I'm really looking forward to the next book in the series.
Well done, Miss Hollyfield. :)

This was another amazing installment from one of my go-to authors. I simply cannot get enough of J.D. Hollyfield's brand of snark and humor. Her sassy, clever women get me every time, and her men are sexy on a whole other level.

Lexi Hall was, on her own, a very relatable character. I could see pieces of women I know all too well in her, and maybe even a little bit of myself in her fake happy exterior. What I loved about her was that despite her self-admission that she was just faking her way through, it never truly shattered her confidence or her self-worth. She wasn't demeaning herself so much as taking advantage of the choices she felt faced with.

Hunter was a little difficult to love. He was definitely overbearing, mostly an ass, then suddenly he's smitten and causing swoons left and right. One thing that was never in question, however, was that his dark brooding self is sexy as hell. The way he paints her, and lusts for her from across the room. The way he wants to win her, woo her, love her. Ahhh, the feels!

Getting a little glance into the life of a past favorite character was a treat. Chrissy's story in My So Called Life hit me hard in the aww department, with her niece and her second chance romance. Knowing they're doing just fine and still oh, so much in love was good to my soul.

My absolute favorite character in this book though, was New Leaf. She was a bossy, domineering, snarky bitch, determined to get the job done and to steer Lexi on the straight and narrow path. Bravo New Leaf, bravo.

In the spirit of full disclosure, I want to mention that overall this should have been a 5 star. It was a great read, and everything I love about these books. However, the drama/twist at the end was just not a trope I am a fan of. In fact, it was one I specifically dislike. So, take my rating with a grain of salt, and know that what isn't for me can easily be another reader’s catnip. It was, for what it's worth, not enough to make me dislike the book, and overall, I genuinely loved it. ~ George, 4 stars

~~~
Faking It was witty, humorous and, more than anything, extremely easy to relate to. The heroine, Lexi Hall, fakes it ‘til she makes it. We have all done that at one point in our lives. I'd be lying if I didn't admit I still do. Whether it's faking something small, acting happy to go to a social event when we really don't want to, or something deeper, hiding your emotional stability, stretching the truth is part of life. Lexi has the science down, until she meets the brooding artist, Hunter James. When these two meet, their worlds are changed for the better.
Lexi acts confident and cocky, she gives off a 'whatever' attitude but deep down she is lonely. When Hunter walks into her life, her walls start to dissolve and we see the real Lexi. Hunter is the same, brooding and grumpy—with a little help from Lexi, we get to see the kind and compassionate person that Hunter really is. Together, they are beautiful, heart-warming and extremely funny.
I was not expecting to love this book as much as I did but I couldn't be happier with the results. ~ Kelly, 4 stars
This book made me feel lighter, and happy. It was riveting and uplifting, but more than anything I wanted to know where I could find friends like Lexi, no scrap that how can I step into her shoes. Her attitude towards life was unique, and even after finishing this book. I was interested in what was going on with her. She had the worst and the best luck. I loved how she grabbed the bull by the horns and found humor in everything. She was the standout for me, surrounded by a wonderful cast.
Lexi works for an art gallery and has been given the opportunity to take a meeting with the recluse artist Hunter James. He has every intention of turning Lexi down, since he turns everyone down. When he coincidently meets Lexi the night earlier, he has no idea this extremely attractive woman is the woman he is meeting with. Suddenly after two encounters, he's determined to make her his muse. Lexi isn't having it, and thinks Hunter is insane. Then he offers her something she just can't refuse, so she agrees to become his subject, and well she learns there are some things that are impossible to say no to, when the words are spoken by this artist.
I have a confession to make. I am obsessed with Billionaire stories; this one had a nice flair. I loved it from the very first page, and found myself laughing at Lexi's antics. I learned early on that she happens to get stuck in these situations, and backs herself in a corner. It's funny, and sad at the same time. Like, that sucks, but she's strong, independent, and get herself back up and move on. Meeting Hunter on one hand was a dream for her, she wasn't going to pass him up, especially with her recent luck with the opposite sex. She said the heck with it, and did something for herself. She gave herself happiness, which lead to the most romantic, and intimate experiences of her life. She gave him the real Lexi, one she is afraid of anyone seeing. A leap of faith for her, but a smart one in the end.
Hunter is a catch. He's smart, talented, and passionate. He is perfect in almost every way. His only flaw is that he's hidden himself to avoid getting hurt which in turn has made him a little jaded. The interesting thing is it makes sense, but it makes me feel for him. Everone has their issues, and that's alright. He's still wonderful, and Lexi will probably say the same thing.
We have two perfectly imperfect people who deserve to be happy. Hiding themselves away in entirely different ways. This one's got a lot of heart, and the angst factor is just how I like it. If you are looking for an easy, and entertaining read with some great spice, then pick this one up sooner than later.
I've never read a JD Hollyfield book before. I have no idea why it hasn't happened, but it hasn't. This book rectifies that situation and guarantees that I'll be grabbing another JD Hollyfield book as soon as I have time.
This book is hilarious and sexy. Here's why it's hilarious:
...the stranger danger hunk of pure sex.
I practically fall forward. Most likely because my vagina just tried to launch itself at him.
Am I bummed that he turned down the sexual escapade? Hell yes. I am sporting some major female version of blue balls right now. Would it be blue lips? Blue labia? Blue bean? Okay enough. You get the point.
...every word out of his mouth is like a warming sensation that spreads down my whole body, leaving tingles in its path. It doesn't escape my attention that I'm also describing the effects of warming lube.
Just when I hope I die right here--because the world's most embarrassing date needs to end somehow--the olive chooses that opportunity to catapult out of my throat, out of my mouth, and bonk off Hunter.
"What was that? I can't hear you over the applauding and cheering coming from my vagina"
"Hey," I whisper loudly to Chrissy, "Dude, it's Cornelius. What do I do?"
"Open the door and shoot him. Then come lay back down."
Fool me once, shame on me. Fool me twice, shame on everyone else who gets caught in my wrath.
Yep. Funny. Now for the few hottie hot scenes I highlighted:
"But the problem is I also can't stop imagining how good it would feel to fuck you up against that window over there, for the world to see. To thrust into you over and over. I ache to feel how warm you are inside. To take your perfect breasts into my mouth and suck on them until I can see my marks marring your impeccable skin."
"I want this body to ravage and bruise. To torment and please. But I want more than that. I meant it when I said I want all of you."
So, want a funny, sexy read? Faking It is probably what you're looking for.
5 New Leaf Stars!!
Such a fun read! Lexi is a typical twenty-something gal looking for love in all the wrong places, until a brooding, reclusive artist makes her an offer she can't refuse. Very Indecent Proposal! ;) In what becomes a whirlwind trip, Lexi and Hunter discover each other. But something about Hunter knocks Lexi off her usual confident game. And Hunter, well... Hunter has been completely out of the game for years. So while he's the perfect package on the outside, he's unsure and awkward socially. It was so freaking adorable!! Oh, and there's a twist, because of course, someone has a deep dark secret.
We loved this read. It had us laughing our asses off, while pulling at our heart strings, and damn near tears too!
Not to be missed! =))
Favorite Quotes:
“I just want to find this said love-of-a-lifetime crap everyone raves about. I've watched those sappy movies. Seen how Chrissy gushes over all these said fuzzy feelings she experiences when it comes to love, and sadly, I've never felt that. I can't relate when someone speaks of magical tingles and flutters. I mean, that all sounds like just plain old goosebumps and gas pains to me.”
“If my vagina had hands, it would hold out her plate asking for seconds. Thankfully, seconds is what he plans on giving me.”
“Okay I'm done. Toast. And burnt toast for that matter – can't take the heat, so I burn. I don't have a smooth comeback or a practiced one-liner. Clearly, I'm losing my touch.”
“You are the color in my life. You give me a reason to create art.”
“Well I'm ninety-nine percent sure. I've never been in love before so I can't be sure. But I feel really weird and right now I don't know whether I want to cry, possibly laugh, or most importantly, have really really rough sex with you against the storage cabinet.”
“I fib because in some countries flu and three day hangovers probably mean the same things.”
My Review:
J.D. Hollyfield has magic. I have read four of her books now and every one of them has been solid gold. Smartly written, well-paced, relevant, and painfully insightful in a snarky and fun - yet heart squeezing manner. Her books are cleverly humorous and breath-stealing with steamy goodness. Oh yeah – she has it going on. Her characters are likable, even when they shouldn't be - like with rich, beautiful, and successful divas. Shocking – I know! But we get to see the human side of the diva - with the personal humiliations, embarrassing adventures, flying vibrators, dates with transformer sheets in their parents' house, - yeah – she went there... things I don't expect would happen to a beautiful diva, but, maybe they do... and I loved it. Using a dual POV, we get inside the diva's head and find out, she is smart, full of denial as well as fear and snarky humor. And while she has enjoyed her singledom party-girl lifestyle and expensive shoes – she finds herself feeling dissatisfied and empty now that her only friend has found love. She knows she is successful, yet is unfulfilled. Been there, done that, sooo get it. But I could never have conjured these wonderful words and put it all together in such a fun and entertaining package. Ms. Hollyfield has mad skills. She stays near the top of my favorites list... her divas have earned it.
Where do I start with this book.
HILARIOUS.
I was giggling, snorting, shaking my head and laughing out loud....
This book is a light hearted funny smokin hot romantic comedy that will leave you with a torrent of emotions.
Lexi is a brilliant character and I am so glad she got her own story. She is so snarky and smart witted that she sneaks right into your heart. You want to love her and protect her yet push her at the same time.
Hunter is an odd duck but a lovely character. He is dominant, dark, sneaky and powerful and damn is he bossy and pushy lol.
As these two meet in the funniest way they get to know each other over their mutual love for art, their connection grows and they become a force. Lexi and her snarky comments and her ridiculous ways is something else. I love the side bantering humor and the amazing connection with Chrissy.
Honestly, a night on the town with these two would be a panty pissing event!
ok so - something happens towards the end of the book that will leave your emotions in a blender...I Can't tell you what, but you will curse the author (I did....oops). Just be sure to apologize to her because she is a lovely person hahaha.
Anyone looking for a light hearted read or something funny and witty...this is it! Grab it now and enjoy the ride.
This is such a feel good book!
Lexi Hall is loving life. She's moving up in her career. She's happy. Single. Can do as she pleases. Completely happy. Well, that's exactly what she'll have everyone believe.
Hunter James is a reclusive, mysterious artist.
The gallery where Lexi works wants his art.
Lexi is the one who is in charge of getting him to agree.
He agrees.
On one condition.
"Great. But I have one more request."
"Fine. Whatever it is, it's yours."
Everyone needs to read this book as soon as it goes live! I can't remember the last time a book just made me love it this much. Made me so happy. Nothing else but enjoying it and love the characters and the story!
"Let me paint every contour of your exquisite body. Every curve, every dimple."
Feel good books are so underestimated and I hope this one doesn't get underestimated or over looked because I had a goofy smile on my face the whole time! I laughed hard and I damn well swooned!!
"I would never just let you go. I told you. You are mine. And my tomorrow doesn't happen unless you're in it."
I loved Lexi!! One of the best heroines I've read. When I started reading it at first I wasn't expecting to love her as much. I wasn't even sure if I'd connect with her much but I totally did!! How can you not? She's pretty amazing. She'd totally agree too! I loved her cockiness and confidence so much. You will want to be friends with Lexi!! If I was to describe Lexi I'd say she's kind of a modern day Bridget Jones. Because well, she didn't always have great luck and case of word vomit from time to time.( that first meeting with Hunter? Hilarious and the whole meatloaf thing... Poor Lexi! Lol!!) She was just amazing. All of it. Her confidence, sass, bad luck, vulnerability. All of it. I just loved her so much. Lexi reminded me why I love watching/reading rom coms. They're amazing, consuming but real with flaws.
Hunter was just the fucking swooniest motherfucker!! Seriously. His character was so complex! He was playful, swoony, he was the broody artist with so much more depth than what you see but he kept his cards close to his chest. I totally loved his slight social awkwardness, he had that awkwardness to him and yet he was seriously sexy and still confident too. It just completely added to his character. Hunter was so many different things, he was always surprising the heck out of me! and just like Lexi I loved every bit of him.
"Who do you think you are, coming in here thinking you can just take what you want?"
"I'm taking what's mine."
Both hunter and Lexi brought something out in one another. But most of all they brought out a vulnerability in each other and I'm a sucker for vulnerability. I love it. It's my favorite kind of connection between characters. And it was perfectly done here.
"The vulnerability she stirs in me is unnerving. It makes me feel weak. And I swore I would never allow myself to be that way ever again."
I honestly could gush about this book for hours, all day! It's just a book you'll fall in love with. J.D. Hollyfield gets the funny aspect spot on. It's hard to get in books. I imagine it can be hard to do but it flows so naturally in her writing. It's hilarious, witty and smart. It just left with the best feeling and a permanent smile. I can't fault anything in this book. I can't wait to see what's next!
P.s. not sure you'll ever think about unicorns in the same way again.
I loved Faking It by J.D. Hollyfield, such a funny book. This is one of those books where on a day when you don’t want to do anything you can just curl up on the sofa and just cosy on down and read.
This is actually the first time I have read any of J.D Hollyfields books and she would for now forever be on my TBR lists. Such great writing.
This book had everything, there was laughter, love and that all important heart in throat moment where you were wondering what would happen next and had to keep turning the pages to find out. I love when you have such a good mixture in a book, it makes the reading all that more enjoyable.
Lexi is adorable, really that is the only way I can describe her, she is wild but also really funny, the way her character is portrayed just puts a smile on your face constantly. She is also one of those people (yes I know she is not real) that when she is hurting you feel it in your heart and that to make makes a book and a character you can really cling onto.
Ahh now we get to Hunter James, what can I say about him no one else probably has. He is a Hero, there that is really the best way to describe him. You get the feeling that Hunter basically just wants to do his own thing, be on his own, but boy oh boy does he get a shock when Lexi is on the scene, she has this way of just bringing him into the here and now and throwing his how way of thinking out of the window.
"You just bewilder me is all. I have never in my existence been so entranced by someone's entire being."
The chemistry these two have with each other is palatable. You physically feel it fall off the pages.
"I don't know what you're doing to me, but I need to consume every part of you."
I would recommend this book hands down, whether you are looking for something sexy, funny, or a story you can just curl up with and get lost in this book will do that to you.
Ok where can I get me an artist? This is the first time I've read one of J.D. Hollyfield's books and I was not disappointed in the least. Lexi Hall is carefree and has life by the well you know, but is she really truly happy with all that? Lexi is the executive director of an art gallery in San Francisco. While in mid pedi her bff and ex executive director gives Lexi a call telling her about this up and up artist. Well Miss Carefree goes on the trip and lets just say things get turn all upside down. I loved the comedy, and steaminess of this book. Oh and people expect to cry because I mean come on what good romance doesn't give you a good cry?? Hey the book you won't be disappointed
I really enjoyed reading this one, I love a good book that can make me laugh one minute and then feel for the characters in the next. I never give much away in reviews so I'll only say a little.
Hunter is a recluse, he's not interested in his fame, he just wants to be left in peace to paint, although he isn't getting much of that done recently, until Lexi.
Lexi is hilarious, she knows what she wants and she has fun (and some embarrassing moments) along the way of getting those things.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to get lost in a beautiful love story that will also have you clutching your sides from laughter.
5 vibrating stars from me.
*I received and ARC for my honest review*
Lexi - Loves her life, she loves being single. Free to do whatever she wants or does she? Look closer. Is Lexi faking it?
Hunter - A sexy artist, who keeps to himself. He chooses to be a private person, but will that change when he lays eyes on Lexi?
This book was funny, I mean I literally laughed out loud at several parts in the book. I really enjoyed Lexi and her humor and Hunter, okay major swoon worthy!!! Um he can paint me anytime. This was a fun, sexy, heart warming read for me and I highly recommend it!!
I LOVE this author! Her books are always funny, sexy & heartwarming. This one was no different. I started this afternoon and finished right before midnight! I couldn't put it down! Great story - with the right amount of angst, funny & sweet. And the damn epilogue that had me smiling from ear to ear. You rocked out another great book girl! Loved it!
Faking It..I really liked it. I loved Lexi's character a lot. She had me cracking up with her New Leaf persona. James was a mystery but I liked him too. Some of the things Lexi would talk about faking, I could relate in my life. I really liked her character and glad she got her HEA.
This is my first read for this author. I really liked it and would read others.
Faking It was my first novel by J.D. Hollyfield and it definitely left an impression. This sexy romantic comedy had a great balance of sweet and sassy, serving up Hunter and Lexi’s story with sarcasm and steam. I knew I was in for a wild ride from the very first page and J.D. Hollyfield delivered just that. Hunter and Lexi’s journey was certainly unconventional, jumping from first meeting to nudity in no time (but not in the way you’d expect). Hunter instantly intrigued me. His shut-in lifestyle made him a riddle I wanted to solve and his reaction to Lexi only furthered that desire. They had an immediate chemistry that leant itself to some serious tension and plenty of heated exchanges before boiling over into an uncontrollable passion that made me blush. J.D. Hollyfield has a unique voice and she isn’t afraid to let it loose. Faking It is a dose of filthy fun with a side of emotional whiplash that only hints at the possibilities ahead of this author.
My biggest issue with this book was the character development. While Hunter was a hermit, avoiding social situations and people in general until Lexi forced him out of his self-imposed isolation, he was also a domineering alpha. While this definitely made for a yummy hero, I never really got a handle on Hunter’s personality and that kept me from fully connecting with him. Lexi, on the other hand, had a very distinctive personality. She came across as wild and carefree with an underlying insecurity that reared its head in her oftentimes-childish behavior. Honestly, this character just wasn’t for me. I couldn’t get myself to feel for her, even as we got to know her a little more. Her voice was too much at times and the humor felt forced. Had this character been given more depth I think it would have helped balance out her extreme personality but as the character remained relatively superficial, I just couldn’t get there with Lexi.
Admittedly, Faking It took some time for me to get into. The story moved slowly and I’d even go so far as to say that there were portions of this book that didn’t seem to move the story forward at all. The majority of the action and drama was concentrated into the end of the novel and I definitely think the story would have benefited from having that part of the timeline expanded, as it was for me, the most enjoyable part of the story. One of the highlights of the book was Chrissy. As far as best friends go, she’s the real deal. She made me grin with her good-natured teasing and warmed my heart with her unwavering support, not to mention there was that fiercely protective side that came out and made me want to high five her. Chrissy was the hidden gem of this story. J.D. Hollyfield’s writing definitely has a ton of potential. Faking It was sprinkled with moments of emotional honesty that left my heart hopeful and there was plenty of quote-worthy prose to enjoy. I look forward to seeing this author continue to grow and develop her craft in the future.
Faking It, by JD Hollyfield is the first book in the UnReal series. I’ll be the first to admit that I had no idea what to expect. This is my first JD Hollyfield book, but it will not be my last. This book was a roller coaster of emotions and I didn’t want it to stop.
Lexi Hall fakes it. What is it? Everything. She fakes being happy, she fakes enjoying herself, she fakes interest in the guy sitting across from her at dinner…you get the idea. She fakes it ‘til she makes it. Lexi works at St. Markey, an art gallery. It is her job to get artists and then she also speaks with potential buyers. This is how Lexi finds herself on a plane in an attempt to land a big deal artist.
Hunter James is a recluse. He keeps to himself and enjoys it. He doesn’t date or go out or do anything that would put him in the public eye. He just happens to be a big deal artist who is highly sought after in the art world. Since he values his time and chooses to spend very little of it with others, he has offered St. Markey 45 minutes of his time.
As first encounters go, this one is amusing. I can’t explain it here without ruining one of the funniest scenes in the book, but just know that Lexi refers to Hunter James as “the stranger danger hunk of pure sex” and boy is he ever. That mouth, that body, those hands, and—oh!—those eyes. Sex on a stick or a hunk of pure sex. Whichever. Despite the ridiculous sexual tension between these two, Hunter makes it a point to deny her any sort of physical fun that is beyond first base. He wants to get to know Lexi and not just use her. This man has a way with words and Lexi’s quick, humorous take on almost everything that he says will leave you laughing out loud. “…every word out of his mouth is like a warming sensation that spreads down my whole body, leaving tingles in its path. It doesn’t escape my attention that I’m also describing the effects of warming lube.” Yes, folks, you’ll get gems like that in this fun, sexy, flirty, lovable story. This is the book you are looking for when you say you want to read something funny and hot. JD Hollyfield delivers on both counts.
"Fake it till you make it."
Faking It is book one in the UnReal series by Author J.D. Hollyfield. It is a contemporary romance novel that can be read as a standalone. However, you will find characters from this author’s Love Not Included series that will make you want to grab up their book too.
"I have never in my existence been so entranced by someone's entire being."
Lexi Hall is the Executive Art Director at St. Markey, a hot art gallery in San Francisco. She eats, breathes, and sleeps art, fashion, and the new trends. Hunter James is quiet, stays to himself and his art. He doesn't take risks, and Lexi Hall is a risk that it out of his orbit. Their story sets us on a fast track for frivolity and laughter, drama and delight.
"Every single part of you demands that I take and devour. Make it mine until the moans of your submission become my ecstasy."
Written in dual points of view, Faking It had equal parts of humor, lust, and reality; it was simply charming Lexi was the kind of character you immediately connect with. Her snark and inner dialogue made me want to yank her out of the book and permanently plant her in my life. Author J. D. Hollyfield crafted Hunter into his own remarkable work of art. An obviously intelligent and educated man, he was so cute with his reclusiveness and need to preserve himself. Who would have thought that these two would have ended up together, on the same pages of a book? One of my favorite Faking It moments was, "Unicorns. I have a new appreciation for unicorns." Yep, me too. I have always aspired to find the illusive unicorn, and see what magic it revealed. Now I want it more than ever. Need a pick-me-up, a fun read, a great love story? Grab up Faking It and enjoy!
"...I just wonder how anyone could ever leave you."
4 stars for a funny, light and steamy read that I read cover to cover in about a day. This is a spin-off of the Love Not Included series and while we get a check in with Chrissy and her new little family this book can be read as a complete stand alone. A reclusive and very rich artist meets a life of the party art broker not only do sparks fly but hilarity ensues...
Lexi Hall is really good at "faking it". Lexi claims to love her party girl lifestyle and all her high maintenance dieting/grooming is just par for the course but she also envies those that have found "the one" and secretly hopes to settle down one day with a husband and kids. Meanwhile she is just coasting along doing her thing when she does a favor for a friend that sends her to Los Angeles to meet a reclusive artist. Turns out this recluse is one of the most attractive men Lexi has ever met and the instant connection these two share is undeniable. There is no way Lexi could act on these feelings with a potential client but he is making her all these offers she can't refuse...
Hunter James hates being out in public so he hides away in his penthouse and paints when he feels the desire to pick up his brush. The only problem is he hasn't felt the urge to paint in a long time until he sees her. Hunter has no idea who the beautiful women who has enchanted him is, but as soon as his meeting is over he plans on finding out. Imagine his luck when he goes out to meet the art broker from some small gallery in San Francisco and it is her, his muse, the most beautiful women he has ever seen. Now he just has to convince her to stay...
OK imagine Howard Hughes hooking up with one of the Kardashians and that is how opposite these two are in terms of lifestyle but it made for so many laughs my sides hurt. I enjoyed this book and plan on reading anything else to come in the series :)
Wow...I went into this book blind...I always like to read new authors and I am so glad I chose JD Holyfield to read.
Lexi Hall is my hero. She may have been born with a silver spoon, but she has made a life for herself, but she's been faking it for a good while. She has Chrissy (her bff) in her life, but Chrissy has fallen in love and moving forward. Chrissy is a "homemaker" with the love of her life and her niece, all something that Lexi claims she does't want, but is she lying to herself? She starts to believe that it's time...time to listen and turn over a "new leaf"...
"I, Lexi Hall, want to change. To be loved. To be cared for. To be cherished, dammit!! Problem is, I don't know how to go about doing it..."
Chrissy asks her to go and "woo" Hunter James, the new up and coming artist to come and display at the art gallery she works at. And yup - you got it, he's a gorgeous hunk of a man. The sparks fly and they are not just the "I wanna jump into bed with you sparks".
I love a book that gives me goosebumps and butterflies while reading (two things that Lexi says she doesn't want), but I for surely got them while reading. And the other part of Lexi that I loved...she was so damn funny~~
"Seriously pal? What are you a human orgasm dispenser?"
The quick witted banter between Lexi and Hunter made me smile, and the intimacy between them was believable, it wasn't all about sex. They want to know each other and their time together is meaningful and fun! Of course there is little twist that I wasn't expecting...
I read this book in one sitting (it was the morning) but if i would have started at night this would definitely had me UP ALL NIGHT reading!
