The great cataclysm wiped almost all life from the face of planet Earth, but tiny pockets of survivors crawled from the ashes, with only one thought: survival, at any cost.
But not all survivors were human.
In the dark, militant society that has risen in the aftermath, vampires, once thought to be mythical, have been assimilated and enslaved. Used for blood sport their lives are allowed to continue only for the entertainment of the masses. Reviled as savages, they are destined to serve out their immortal lives in the arena, as gladiators.
And there is no greater gladiator than Mira: undefeated, uncompromising...and seemingly unbreakable. When an escape attempt leads Mira into the path of Lucian Stavros, the city’s Regent, her destiny is changed forever.
Lucian, raised in a culture which both reviles and celebrates the savagery and inhumanity of vampires, finds Mira as intriguing as she is brash. An impulsive decision - to become Mira’s patron – changes more than just Lucian’s perception about vampire kind. The course of his life is altered in ways he could never have predicted – a life that is suddenly as expendable as hers.
Can Mira prove to Lucian that all is not as it seems? Can Lucian escape centuries of lies, bloodshed, and propaganda to see the truth? Or will the supreme power of the human overlords destroy them both?

WOW Dark and Gritty and a Phenomenal Read 4.5 Star
This is a fantastic read from beginning to end. Ms. Salidas will keep you glued to the pages as you read this story. Watching the world has you know it be destroyed and rebuilt and flourish. Vampires and humans can co-exist or at least for a short time. Mira a vampire a slave for the human race and a gladiator put to fight a battles that end in life or death, will do anything to escape the clutches and torture brought to her and all vampires. Can Mira escape and find refuge away from the savagery that the humans bring to all vampires. In this Post Apocalyptic World that was created for us to explore we see that humans are not always the prey that they can and are sometimes more ravenous for bloodshed than the creatures of the night.
Ms Salidas world building is phenomenal the characters are amazing. I loved Mira's character she is a free spirit and a kick ass vampire who stands her ground no matter what punishment she may have to endure. Olivia (human) well she is a Bitch and only out for monetary gain. She owns Mira and has no problem issuing punishments at even the slightest infraction that Mira does. Lucian (human) and (Regent to this new world that was built from ashes) is intrigued with Mira and wants to see if everything he has heard about vampires growing up is true. Can he earn Mira's trust? Can Mira and Lucian save the world and bring back that unity between the vampire and human races once again? If you are looking for a Vampire story with a twist I highly recommend you checking out this new Series. Because vampires are not the predators in this story they have become the prey.

Fun start to Ms. Salidas's post-apocalyptic paranormal series! It almost had a gritty, Walking Dead sort of feel for me, only with vampires ;) Mira is a badass main character and I look forward to continuing to read about her journey.

The world as we know it has gone, its been destroyed and rebuilt. Only this time Vampires and humans had co-existed; for a while at least. Now the humans have become more dominate and controlling. Humans have imprisoned the vampires and use them for entertainment purposes.

One of the imprisoned vampires is Mira, Mira is a gladiator who has to fight in battles to the death; against others of her kind. She doesn't enjoy killing her own kind but its simple in the arena; kill or be killed! Mira desperately wants to escape, not just that she wants to free the rest of her kind, and she's always trying to think of new ways to escape.

The questions are: Will she meet her demise before she can hatch her latest plan? Can she escape? Or will she die trying?

Katie Salidas has succeeded in writing something different from her other books, this is a dark, gritty page turner; where the tables have turned and the hunter is know the prey and the humans are more bloodthirsty than the vampires.

The world that Katie Salidas has created for me was totally believable. I could see everything clearly in my own mind and I was soon completely immersed with Mira, Olivia and Lucian to name just a few. The characters are fantastic.

At the front of the story we meet Mira. Mira is an amazing vampire. She's not afraid to stand her ground knowing full well that every time she does, she will be punished; horribly! But still she stands her ground and faces her punishment head on! I suspect that Mira's desire for freedom; both for herself and her fellow vampires; is what drives her on; and gives her the strength to continually fight against the rules and her punishments.

There seems to be a human owner for the vampires, Mira is no exception. Mira's owner is Olivia. I can only think of one way to describe Olivia; she is a complete and utter bitch! I don't like her one bit, she's evil! Olivia is only out for monetary gain and really doesn't care about Mira, she will readily dish out punishments for the tiniest of things. The only time Olivia is happy is when when she gains from Mira's behaviour, so when Mira wins a fight in the arena or when Mira manages to secure herself a Patron!

In this new world there is a human governor; of sorts; called the Regent. The Regent; Lucian; watches the battles in the arena and decides whether the final fatal blow is to be delivered. Lucian has seen Mira fight in the arena, but he meets her properly on her latest escape attempt. He claims to be intrigued by Mira and wants to get to know her. Lucian convinces Mira to allow him to escort her back to her cell so that her punishment will be less severe. Lucian also decides to be Mira's patron much to both Mira and Olivia's surprise; not the Olivia will be complaining as this will give her more money! Mira doesn't trust Lucian. Lucian is is wondering if what he learnt growing up about vampires is actually true. I'm not sure if I trust Lucian, I have questions about him and his motives! I'll see how I feel after book 2!

I was hooked on this book from the beginning. I love everything about the book; the characters, the plot and the setting. I especially love how Katie Salidas has turned the tables on the vampires; so that they are no longer the predators, they are now the prey.

Wow finally an original idea! I'm a huge fan of both paranormal and urban fiction and if you add a dash of romance then I'm more than a happy bunny so it was with great interest that I read ths book. I've seen this authors Immortalis Carpe Noctem series recommended but will confess to not actually reading it yet . Just something about this storyline though really fired up my imagination and happily I was most definitely not disappointed.
Set in a future where humanity is all but wiped out we meet those that have survived. The few humans that have crawled out of the mire have had to accept that vampires exist and although initially the two species had worked together unfortunately as time goes by mankind's greed and distrust has seen the vampire race subjugated . The situation has worsened and now any vampires caught are imprisoned.
Mira is a vampire and has been used in barbaric gladiator type games to entertain the humans for more years than she chooses to remember. The pathetic and sadistic humans think she's there to entertain but they are wrong as Mira is there to survive! She's killed countless of her own kind but all she wants is freedom. Whilst making an escape attempt Mira meets the city's Regent Lucian and for some strange reason captures his interest. Mira will do anything to survive but giving her trust to a human might just be a step too far. As Lucian try's to find out what makes Mira tick he comes to realise that not everything he believed about vampires is true. Humanity has believed that vampires are killers but what if it's mankind who are the true beasts?
O wow this was an incredible book. I'm so pleased I read it and will admit I did not put this down until the final page. It's clearly just the beginning but the world building here is absolutely fabulous. The author doesn't rush and gives the reader time to get to know the heroine Mira and she's not the most lovable character. Mira is an arrogant hard headed woman but she's so full of heart that it's impossible not to be bowled over by her. There's no amount of pain or degradation that will see her bow down. Mira is smart and courageous and I was so routing for her .
There is action within this book as well and I thought the fight scenes were very well described and it was so easy to picture the action in my head. This story is peopled by characters that we are only just getting to know and I still have so many questions. There is an end to this story but it's clearly setting up for much more to come and it's going to be an interesting journey. Mira has so much more to give as a heroine and Lucian is certainly no one dimensional character either.
Set in a post apocalyptic world Dissension is an amazing piece of fiction and for this reader far too short! Filled with action and a central character that I really cared about I cannot praise it highly enough. I will search out Ms Sadidas back catalogue and strongly urge lovers of a good story to read this book.

With the unexpected cataclysm, life has changed as everyone knows it. It's survival of the fittest, pitting humans and vampires against one another in more ways than one. Food is scarce, as is shelter. For those remaining, things are far too difficult.

An unfortunate prisoner of war, Mira has lived in captivity for far too long. Thoughts of freedom cycle through her mind each and every day. Determined to find a means of escape, she does her best to co-exist in the pits she's been sentenced to. A formidable gladiator, she's fought for her life every step of the way. Granted, things haven't been easy, but she refuses to bend to anyone's will but her own.

Things take an unexpected turn when the city's Regent takes her under his wing. Lucian Stavros is unlike any human she's ever come across. Mira has never placed her trust in anyone before, but there's something about the Regent that draws her interest from the get-go. For a moment, she can almost believe that he truly wants to change her destiny and that of her own kind. The thought alone is mind-boggling, yet she can't help but to hold out a little hope for a better future.

Though she risks a lot by placing her trust in his hands, Mira knows he's the only one who can change her situation outright. She understands that they're walking a very fine line. Should anyone catch wind of their machinations, death will coming knocking around the corner. Still, she's willing to do everything possible to change her fate. She has to. Remaining a captive of a human society is no longer an option. Somehow, some way, she will find her freedom, even if it means she'll need to put herself in harm's way in order to achieve it.

K. A. Salidas has always written books that pull you in and never let go. This new series will not disappoint. An original and very unique storyline, we'll sucked into the heart of a volatile society in a post-apocalyptic world where vampires exist and humans rule with an iron thumb. A world where being at the top of the food chain means everything.

K. A. has crafted a quite vivid world, and you can picture everything as it takes place. From the coliseum where Mira fights to the Regent's quarters. I found the main character's quips and interactions with those around her quite amusing. There's enough action and humor mixed throughout the book that it'll definitely capture your attention and keep it till the very end. I'm looking forward to more of this intriguing series.

•••I listened to the Audible Audio Edition of this book•••

Meghan truly brings out Mira's sardonic wit and feelings of entrapment. Her performance lends real life to all the characters making them all individualized. I am not sure I would have understood the truth desperation involved without her renderings. I will definitely be looking for more of her work and truly hope she continues on with this series :)

Defiant And Unbroken

This series must be listened to (or read) in order. The first book is Initiation. This is the second book. I can't wait to listen to Complication!

Mira has been a slave in the Arena for 30 years. Fighting as a Gladiator she is undefeated. Probably the only reason she is still alive. After all she takes nothing from anyone no matter who they are. She has even tried to escape innumerable times... Attacked gaurds... You name it. She will not be meek and accept her Fate! She knows that one of these days she will escape... Or die trying. Will she ever escape? Will she get her friend out with her? Is her determination just a pipe dream? Or will she lose her next fight and be put to death? Why is she so set upon doing the impossible?

Lucian is both shocked and intrigued after meeting Mira. He knows that all he has been raised to believe is wrong just from one short meeting. He feels drawn to Mira and her unbroken indomitable spirit. He needs to keep her safe. Will she help him with his secret plans? Or will his attachment to her be discovered? Will she cause him to lose favor and be removed from power? Will she be the death of them both?

***This series is suitable for mature young adult through adult readers who enjoy post postapocalyptal dystopian supernatural fantasy horror with plenty of action, mystery, intrigue, and adventure with a dash of romance :)

This was a good, original book. The world as we know it has ended and humans weren't the only ones to survive. Vampires came from hiding and formed an uneasy alliance with humans. Humans found a way to control them and now the vamps are slaves. They fight for the pleasure of the humans. The better you fight, the longer you live and the better you live. The best fighter in her area is Mira. She isn't likable and has no desire to be but she wants to survive. She can't trust humans, but one, Lucian, is interested in her and not in the 'normal' way. Maybe humans aren't all bad?
I liked the back story of how Earth basically ended and the way humans change. I completely adored Mira (though she might rip out my throat for saying that!). She was just completely true to herself and what she was. Though she hated humans for imprisoning her, she didn't kill them. I think George was my favorite character. He was a friend of Mira even if she was stubborn and got the other vamps tortured as well. I wasn't sure if I liked Lucian or not, he is a definite mix that leads to lots of questions. I like how the story line flowed and you just don't want to put this book down!
I rate this a 5/5. I really enjoyed the whole story and characters.
Thank you to the author for the review copy of this book. I received this book in exchange for an honest review and the opinions stated above are 100% mine.

Mira has had enough!

I loved Dissension because it was very different from other vampire books I've listen to or read.
This world was about to come to an end but the vampire's came out of hiding to help the humans save our world. That was 30 years ago. Since than in the story line. The humans were terrified of the vampires and caged them all out of fear. The vampires have to fight to the death to survive. The are only feed a minimum amount of blood but only if they are good and fight as their masters command. They have been turned into slaves. Fight slaves and sex slaves, slaves that never know if they will survive one more day.
Mira is the main prized fighter who hasn't given up on earning her freedom. After 30 years in a cage she starts to fight back for her freedom. She is a real fighter in mind, body and sprite. Her smart mouth will make you laugh. It will also upset you. It is easy to see they need to be freed from having to kill each other for sport. When she was beating or put in the light box. I was unhappy with the masters. I could only think, how dare you.
I could easily listen to this book twice. It has you on an emotionally roller coaster from start to finish. The author just grasps you with the unjust treatment of the vampires.

The narrator Meghan Kelly has a perfect voice for Mira that helps you really get the Main character. The smarty comments the Mira says are more emotional for the listener.

This isn't your typical dystopian book. Where we usually find stories about surviving in times of hardship in a world we don't recognize anymore, here the world has been rebuilt and society has put itself together again. And where once vampires and humans co-existed together, humans have made the vampires their slaves.

This book has so many things going for it! Ms. Salidas does an excellent job describing this new world. All of the characters, no matter how minor, are well thought out and developed. Overall, I feel this book will appeal to a broad range of readers.

Mira is a badass! She's spunky and you can't help but root for her. She's been a slave for longer than she can remember and really wants nothing more than her freedom. And it's during one of her escape attempts where she meets Lucian.

Lucian is the Regent of the town and a human. But lately he's been questioning everything he was raised to believe about vampires. He develops an affinity for Mira and wants to help her, but she has to trust him.

Can Mira learn to trust him? Can Lucian really help her achieve freedom?

This is a really quick read and I was sucked into the story from the first page and my attention never wavered. I can't wait to read the next book and see how the relationship between Mira and Lucian develops.

Great, Unique Mingling of both the Paranormal and Dystopian Genres!
First let me start off by saying that this author is new to me, but being a fan of both paranormal and dystopian fiction, I couldn't resist the lure of the blurb. I am so thankful that the author chose me to review an audio copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. I got caught up in the story right away and was shocked when it finished that I hadn't noticed the time going by. I was just so engrossed in the story and I absolutely love the snarky, strong, smart, witty, and totally mouthy, fearless gladiator heroine Mira. Though at times I wanted to snatch her words from the air because of the trouble she could get into. Until coming upon this book I hadn't really thought to a dystopian future where the underdogs would be the very brings that normally tide the top of the food chain. Vampires. Enslaved, forced to fight one another for the enjoyment of their human captors and masters. Tortured and treated with the utmost inhuman of practices. When Mira and Lucian, the human Regent of her area, meet, both of their lives take a turn. I won't say how or let slip any spoilers. Suffice it to say that I definitely recommend this book. The narrator Meghan Kelly, who I've listened to in other books does an outstanding job of bringing even more life to an extremely well written story.

Glued To My Headphones (Audiobook)
WOW! This book may be short but it packs a huge punch and definitely leaves you craving more.

The author & the narrator bring you full force into a future that has brought back the Roman Gladiators with a twist, the gladiators are imprisoned, cruelly treated vampires.

K.A. Salidas does an amazing job developing this new world and all the characters in it and Meghan Kelly brings her story to life with perfect voice, attitude, and timing.

Mira is a strong willed, kick ass, snarky vampire looking for a way out of slavery for herself and her people. Lucian Stavros is the human region administrator brought up to believe a falsehood about vampires but is willing to learn the truth. George the vampire, while a minor character, is endearing and brings real heart to the story. Olivia the human owner is a spoiled, rotten b****. And the complexity of characters goes on & on.

This audiobook was provided at no cost in exchange for an unbiased review courtesy of Audiobook Blast.

Pretty please, with a blood chaser bring the rest of the books in this series to Audible.

K.A. Salidas pulls the reader into a not so fair new world when the old one has collapsed in Apocalyptic ruin. Humans have control over vampires, even though they had once been allies. Now slaves, vampires have no say over how they spend their immortal lives. Mira is one such vampire who will do anything to be free from clutches of humanity.

This novel started off with a bang and continued supplying action packed scenes the entire time. I love the subtle ways Mira grows as a character throughout the book, while still keeping her empowering and snarky nature. I am ready to read the next one!

I have not read many vampire books yet that I was impressed by, but this one definitely makes up for those. (Cough...Twilight...cough....)

When I started this book, I really had no idea where it was going. Vampires as the victims? Interesting to say the least. That it is a dystopian gladiator type story made it even more so. It sort of reflects real life these days. A type of person being grouped all into one, so the discrimination envelops them as a whole. My only beef is that it ended so abruptly, without any resolution at all, but that usually doesn't detract from the story for me. Only wish it were longer! Cannot wait to read the net installment!

Once I started reading Dissension I couldn't stop! I absolutely loved this innovative twist on the dystopian landscape. Vampires and humans in a new dynamic! I have to say that one of my favorite aspects of this book was the inclusion of the gladiators even tho it is set in the future. I know what you are thinking - it sounds like too many things all at once! But it isn't! The characters have wonderful development and the story flows together perfectly. I cannot wait to read book 2, Complication in the Chronicles of the Uprising.

When I started reading this book I didn't think it was my cup of tea but boy was I wrong. Full of action packed gladiator style fighting, fast paced read and an intriguing story line and the lead female protagonist is one bad a$$ female that's hard headed and cocky. Can't wait to read the second book.

This is a good book that is well-paced but it is so damn short. It also ends rather abruptly.

I'm not much of a vampire person but this is an enjoyable read and I am hoping that there will be a sequel as it's left open for one.

[Note of disclosure: I was gifted this book by the author but will try to be as unbiased as possible in my review]

I'm going to be completely honest here, had it not been because of Meghan Kelly's narration, then I probably would have written off K.A. Salidas' Dissension as another Hunger Games-style Young Adult Dystopia with a vampire twist, said it was meh, given it a four out of ten score and been done with it. Sadly, the narration made this book straight up annoying to listen to. This will probably cause me to have a slightly more negative view of the book than it deserves, but I'll still do my best to judge the book on its own merit.

First off, the story was… fine. Prisoner tries to escape, gets a powerful sympathizer, stuff happens and eventually they manage to escape. I never really felt very engaged reading it, but it wasn't horrible. It was good enough for me not just dropping the book, so I guess that's a plus?

The real problem I had with the book however, is the characters. We don't really get to know most of the characters, and the only characters I do feel we get to know are; the main character Mira, the rich dude Lucian and Mira's only friend, who I think was named George?

In my opinion, however, we never get to know the two latter characters enough, and Mira was not that much of an interesting character to me. The character I would've wanted to know more about is Lucian, but as I said, I didn't feel like he was developed enough throughout the book.

Mira was annoying all the way through the book, had a challenging attitude and barely changed. She was a stereotypical strong, independent female character and I didn't feel like it went beyond that. It was never explained WHY she was the strongest fighter there, and she had an attitude that I felt was unnecessarily uppity.

Now, I don't hate characters because they're strong and female, I just want to have an explanation as to WHY they are so strong.

The only real thing that caught my interest was the world Salida had built up. It's an interesting twist where vampires are the enslaved race in a dystopian world.

Sadly, the worldbuilding isn't explored enough and too little is revealed.

Now, the narration. As I mentioned, Kelly's narration really brings down this book's score for me. Basically every character have either a hard and annoying tone, or a stoic militaristic tone to their voice, this is even more pronounced amongst the men. It made the book straight up annoying to listen to and I probably would have dropped it, had I not taken the book with the promise to review it.

Had I read this book, then I probably would have given it 4/10 stars, but as an audio books, I cannot give it more than 2/10.

Note: I received this (audio) book from StoryOrigin and I voluntarily give this review, it is my honest opinion.

Dissension is book one in the Chronicles of the Uprising by K.A. Salidas, the story follows Mira, a vampire warrior, who is tired of the way things have been and it desperate to escape the confines of her world. However the more she learns the more she realizes she can't just save herself, she has to save the entire vampire race from the humans who mistreat and enslaved them.

The general idea of the story was a good one, unique, vampires are slaves and humans are the monsters that torture, starve and do who knows what else to them. This is a dystopian, the world ended and is rebuilt again so the human culture is a little different, this includes all-out battles in the arena for mass public entertainment. Humans have become bloodthirsty and very few are willing to see vampires even more humanely than their human counterparts. Usually, it's the vampires reigning over humans and being monstrous so this storyline did grab my interest.

Salidas did a good job with the writing and the story was pretty quick, the audio was only a little over four hours long on regular speed, but I would have liked a little more world-building. She did an excellent job of representing the vampire's life but I would have liked a little more contrast with more of the human way of life. As for the narrator, I had a couple of issues. The first is the accent she chose to represent Mira was a little off and I would have liked something different but what really got me is when Mira all of a sudden had an exaggeration of her normally accent which irritated me.

Overall I mostly enjoyed Dissension, however, I don't plan on continuing the series. I don't feel that connected to the story or characters so I am not particularly interested in what happens. Plus I have a huge pile of books that I need to read and I don't feel like taking time away from them to finish this story. However I won't count Salidas out, the story was interesting enough that I will check out her other work in the future.

In a cataclysmic turnaround, the previous way of life on Earth is over and now humans have taken control of the vampires they used to co-exist with. The humans imprisoned vampires for the purpose of fighting to the death for human entertainment. Mira is a formidable vampire gladiator who has been imprisoned for 30 years. Her entire day-by-day focus is on escape.

The city in this new world is governed by a human Regent, Lucian Stavros. He has watched Mira fight many times, but this time one of her escape attempts brings her face-to-face with him! He wants to know more about her. She, of course, doesn’t trust him. Yet he is the only hope for making a change in the way things are. To everyone’s surprise, he decides to become her patron which means more money for her cruel owner, Olivia – and perhaps a less severe punishment this time. But can Mira trust Lucian, her enemy? Are they both willing to risk everything to return the world to peace and acceptance again?

This was quite a different approach to a vampire story! The story line was very impressive and surprising. The characters were well-defined and invoked strong emotions in the reader. With a vampire like Mira who is so courageous, strong, and willing to take punishment for speaking her mind, it was distressing to see humans try to beat her down. She’s the type the reader will cheer for all the way! She has endured in the arena for 30 years, uncompromising and victorious. Will her new patron join her in making things right again?

I received this book for free. I voluntarily posted this review and any opinions expressed herein are my own.

This is the first book in the Chronicles of the Uprising series - it is not a standalone book and ends on a cliffhanger.

I was hooked on this book from the very beginning. It is a unique twist on vampire stories. In this world, the vampires no longer hunt and humans no longer fear them - it is the exact opposite. It reminded me of Roman times - with the Coliseum and gladiator fights in front of spectators with a thumbs up or down determining the fates of the fighters. This is a fast-paced, action-packed, well-written story that I listened to in one sitting.

Mira, the MC vampire, is a hoot. She is sarcastic, smart, and an incredible fighter. I loved how she handled her owner Olivia - which gave you all you needed to know about her personality. While Olivia is a bit of a cardboard character - full of vitriol and pure cruelty - Mira is a well-developed character who exudes empathy, even though she is a vampire and overall very likeable. She is the character you root for to get one over on the humans who are keeping her down. Then enter Lucian - he is still a question mark. By outward appearances, he should be in league with Olivia but by some of what he says and does, he is a kindler, gentler human who wants to help Mira. It will be interesting to see how Mira and Lucian's relationship develops.

The narrator, Meghan Kelly, did a terrific job bringing this story to life with her narration.

Dissension by Katie Salidas is the first installment in the Chronicles of the Uprising series with an impressive and surprising storyline. Ms. Salidas did an excellent job of world-building,. The characters are well-defined and invoke strong emotions in the reader.

When Mother Nature rebelled and destroyed civilization she left humanity on the edge of extinction. There was no survival without help.  Vampires came out of the darkness and offered mutual help to save their respective races.

Once humans were no longer dying, but actually flourishing, things quickly changed.  Instead of being saviors, humans turned on the vampires, enslaving and forcing most of them to fight each other to death in the gladiator ring.

Mia has spent thirty years surviving in the gladiator ring.  She's tried to escape, always caught and tortured, but she hasn't given up. She also has another desire besides escape, she the humans view if vampires, or die trying.  But how can she or anyone do that?

The story was very different and very entertaining. I am not normally a fan of vampire stories but this one has a twist that drew me in. I was kept me on the edge of my seat from page one. The author has written a dark, and exciting story with a glimmer of light.

I look forward to reading more in this series in order to see how things evolve and I highly recommend it!

I did receive this book free and this is my honest review. As my first story by K.A. Salidas, I am truly impressed with the world  she has created.

When civilization fell, vampires came out of the darkness and helped the human race to survive. Then, once they no longer needed them, the humans turned on the vampires and turned them into slaves. Our heroine, an arena fighter, wants to change that, or die trying.

So this is a combination of urban fantasy and distopian story. I have to say that I dislike bigotry in all its forms, so I did not like the setting of this story, but then it is a dystopian story, so you are not supposed to like it. That being said, it is the characters that saved it for me. I really liked our heroine as she was tough and snarky, although she didn't seem to learn or adapt very quickly. The story itself was well written with an easy to follow plot and our heroine did draw me in as I wanted to see where she would end up. In the end, I did enjoy the ride and plan to read/listen to the next part of the story when I get a chance.

Two additional notes. First, this review is based on the audio book version of the story.

Second, while the story does not end on a cliffhanger, it also does not resolve all of the issues in the story and will definitely leave you wondering what comes next. I am okay with that, but be aware of it before starting.

Recommended.

I really enjoyed this author’s unique dystopian paranormal story. Vampires helped humans survive after an apocalyptic event devastated the earth, but centuries later humans turned on their helpers and enslaved them. This story is written from the POV of Mira, a female vampire that has spent 30 years enslaved, tortured and forced to fight her own kind to the death, just to entertain human masses. This is an exciting, fast paced story in which the humans are more monsters than the vampires. You easily become attached to Mira; her strength, perseverance, and sassy indomitable nature captures you from the start and you can’t help but root for her. I also loved Lucian’s calm, inquisitive mind and how he was willing to discover things for himself and not just follow blindly what he had been told is true. The narrator, Meghan Kelly, did a great job of bringing the characters to life and really made you visualize the brutality of Mira and the other vampires’ lives. This is a well written, exciting story that will keep you on the edge of your seat and leave you dying for the next book in the series

Great first book in an interesting series, good twists and turns in the book. Its an interesting story about post-apocalyptal events. Just the beginning with the prologue drew me in, it was a good draw.

This book follows Mira who wants freedom, and doesn't understand how while she fights and kills other vampires, how the humans can sit there and watch and even eat, but she does what she must do to live to see another day. If there is a way out of this fighting to survive she will find it and do what she needs to do;

The Narrator did an awesome job, she has a soft voice and you can tell she enjoyed reading this book. Her voice rose and fell in the right places with makes the book to listen to that much better.

Between a great Narrator voice and/or a great Author writing, you can really imagine what you are listening to/reading.

I would love to read/listen to the next 5 books in the series later on

I received a free review copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.
