As parents, we want nothing more than a world full of splendor, magic, and love for our children. Jodie’s parents are no different but find themselves thrown into one of the most terrible situations they could have ever dreamed of. From young childhood to grown adult, Jodie’s experiences and stories are filled with heartbreak and torment as she finds herself sucked into making difficult decisions to keep the her idea of the perfect family intact. Armed with her signature quote, “You protect the ones you love”, this book escorts you through the concepts of terror, failure, love, redemption, and dread as it relates to learning about people, and loving your family, no matter what.
While this book does have elements of romance in it (and a fairly decent one at that), it is important to understand that the topics of this book are much deeper than love and would categorize this book as a thriller/suspense. The plot touches your soul and allows you to ask questions such as “Why? Would I do the same? Should family members rank above everyone else? Is this what true loyalty is?” This book crosses over into the disturbing side of life, and quite quickly, so be prepared.
This was a great book. I felt my heart breaking just as Jodie’s did. I felt it being repaired when Flynn appeared. I craved to understand some of the decisions that were made and found myself torn, just as anyone in their right mind/emotional frame would have been. The one thing that grabbed me the most is that despite what Jodie went through in the first half of the book (pre-Flynn), she was able to keep a level head and acknowledge that she was in need of both help and love and allowed herself to accept both when offered. I felt sucked into the drama and a little like gagging at the instant and strong love they had but was happy that something finally went her way.
I did however feel that the book was choppy and much too swift. It ran through the different segments of life like none of it really truly mattered, just a means to the end. Was it intentional? Maybe. This book also left off on a huge cliffhanger. Thankfully, I have the second book of the trilogy ready to go! I really think Courtney could have elaborated on both situations and character development without making it over the top or too heavy. The material she has is excellent so I’m unsure on why she felt the need to just breeze through it all. I’m hoping that she can slow down just a bit and put some additional twists into the second half of Jodie’s life.
The Cover of Love is book one in the Selene's Pass trilogy by Courtney Shockey. The book hooked me by the first chapter, and I read the whole thing in less than 24 hours. There are so many dark events in this book, that I have a hard time reviewing the book without revealing the story! This book is very twisted, with one shocking thing happening after another. I started to feel bad for the main character, Jodie, because she had a very hard life. The book is a great story, and I love the concept. However, I feel like too much happened in too short of a book. The book starts out with Jodie as a young girl, and follows her into her thirties or beyond. In one chapter alone, more than 5 years could pass. I feel like it is the groundwork for an amazing book, but isnt deep enough for me. This book is definitely worth reading. I cannot wait to read the followup books in the trilogy. This book had me hooked, and I would compare it to Gillian Flynn stories. Twisted, but fascinating story, that keeps you on the edge of your seat from start to finish!
A PSYCHO THRILLER!!! This is the first in the Selene’s Pass Trilogy. It deals with how a life can be changed forever because of abuse. Jodie aka JoJo was an only child, but that didn’t matter to her she had her animals and chores around the family farm to keep her busy. Her father and momma loved her so much, at night her father read to her and momma before bed, they were such a close family. Until one day when the man called “Uncle” came to visit and Jodie was never the same again. Jodie was older now and she would scream her head off if he came near her again. She didn’t care what his threats were. Papa always says take care of the ones you love. It is hard to make friends in school when you tend to keep to yourself. One day JoJo sees a girl who looks sad like she does and soon they become friends and they find another soulmate in another girl. Now Jodie, Martha and Alice became the triangle and were the best of friends! Staying at each other’s house as a lot of good girlfriends tend to do. If you saw one you saw the other two. Jodie could put the past in the back of her mind and start to heal. That is when she met Tommy. Tommy was Jodie’s first love. They got along so well together and had so much fun. They talked about the future with each other by their side. Then tragedy strikes. A mother always wants to help their children overcome any obstacles that get in her child way or hurts her child. Mamma just wants to help JoJo and tragedy strikes again. For many years’ JoJo helps with mamma until she sees the begging in her mother’s eyes to fly free. JoJo gives her the wings. Everything is a mess with Jodie’s family and she feels the need to go. As Jodie wakes and doesn’t know where she is or how long she has been gone, she realizes it is time to go home. When a man finds, her wondering the streets, he helps her go home to nothing. He heals Jodie and tries to make her life better. Then tragedy strikes Jodie again but this time she will take the incident to her grave. They finally have a child who is very disturbed and feels nothing but love for his mother. Why do they have to keep moving away from one place to the next after a tragedy strikes in every town they call home? Until the ultimate tragedy that, like papa always said “We protect the ones we love” Courtney Shockey has written one of the best psycho thrillers I have had the pleasure of reading! Very well written, it played out in my mind like I was watching a movie! I can’t wait to read The Shadow of Hope!
4 Star Review The Cover of Love is Volume 1 in the Selene’s Pass Trilogy by Courtney Shockey. It is dark and disturbing and definitely not for the feeble hearted. There are twists, turns, and disturbances that I never saw coming. Shockey will definitely surprise you with something new on every page. The Cover of Love is told in the main character Jodie’s point of view. At all times, you know what is going through her anxious mind as the story unfolds before your eyes.
“We protect the ones we love.”
Jodie Cornett learns early on how far her family is willing to go to protect her at such a young age. Life is rough for her. The older she gets, the rougher it seems to become too. Until the day she meets Flynn Taylor who starts to restore her and make her feel normal for once.
“He became the very air I breathed.”
As time moves forward, you realize that Flynn Taylor seems to be a doting husband and when he’s finally a father, he feels as if he has everything that he could ever want. With a beautiful wife and a son, is life perfect as it may look on the outside?
As much as a person tries to move forward, the past can always haunt us. Just as someone in her family did a deed for her once, is it her time to pass along a deed to cover up something for someone in her family?
“Family is all we have at the end of the day.”
When neighborhood commotions start happening, how far would you go to cover up a wrong doing for someone you love?
If you’re looking for a dark, disturbing, and mysterious story, then I recommend The Cover of Love. You will experience her traumatic childhood, rough teenage years, and her adulthood as she’s a wife and mother. Shockey does a great job of storytelling and not dragging out Jodie’s life story. I feel the end is left open to more from these characters if wanted and does not leave you with a cliffhanger. You’ll be left questioning, how far would you be willing to go in order to protect the ones you love?
Title: The Cover of Love Author:Courtney Shockey Series: Selene’s Pass Trilogy #1
The Cover of Love was an emotionally exhausting 5 star read and the first book in the Selene’s Pass Trilogy.
I’m not even sure where to begin with this review. I’m sitting here in shock and I’m emotionally exhausted. The things in this story progress from what seems like a very happy child into someone who has some very dark and disturbing tragedies happen to her.
We pretty much grow up with Jodie, she’s a happy little girl who loves her parents, horses and sweet pea flowers. Until one day due to a secret that she reveals to her parents she learns that no matter what We protect the ones we love .
As a teenager Jodie meets a couple of girls and they develop a great friendship. And of course things take a turn and more tragedy rocks her world.
As an adult she meets Flynn the love of her life. You could literally feel the love coming off the pages. She eventually has the family she has always wanted. Until tragedy strikes the neighborhood along with some disturbing things that Jodie discovers. Can Jodie keep her family safe? Will she get her HEA?
All I can say is if you like dark and twisted with some disturbing moments this is your book. This is my first read from Courtney Shockey and definitely not my last. There is something about this story that has pulled me in and like a bad accident I couldn’t look away. Once I started reading I couldn’t put it down, just when I didn’t think things could get worse they did. And why oh why did you have to go there? I was an emotional wreck, sobbing trying to read through my tears. I have developed a hatred but I can’t decide who it should be directed towards. There is a cliff hanger but not a huge one. I am very interested to see where this trilogy goes and what will happen next. Can Courtney continue to shock me?
Warning: There may be triggers for some and definitely 18+ readers.
The Cover of Love (Selene’s Pass Trilogy Book One) Courtney Shockey 4 stars
This is the first book in Courtney Shockey Selene’s Pass Trilogy. This story is a hard and sad story, from being to end. I would suggest tissues to be nearby. “Eventually, I asked him to stay with me in the apartment. He was in the bed with me more nights then not and his parents didn’t intervene. My heart was his when he helped me out of the worst situation of my young life, but the longer he stayed with me, the more my soul mended. He became the very air I breathed.” Jodie Cornett has nothing but hardship and heartbreak. It started when she was a small child and her uncle shamed her, then she finally finds love and tragedy strikes, then her mother gets badly hurt, she gets into drugs, her father falls apart. One day she meets Flynn Taylor and he flips her whole world around, but her happiness with Flynn come with heartbreak and secretes. Flynn is her world, when Jodie is finally able to give birth to a boy, she is complete. As her son grows up, she finds things out about her son that she needs to protect him. Can she keep all these secrets and for how long? Can she protect her family from the things that she fells will destroy her happiness?
I gave this book 4 stars, this story had me crying at times and not wanting to finish but then it would grab me and I couldn’t stop reading. The ending is definitely a cliffhanger. Jodie is a young girl and has so much hurt and heartache in her young life. Through the whole book, I felt sorry and sad for her; I so desperately wanted her to have her happy conclusion. Then her son grows up and all Jodi wants to do is sweep all the bad stuff her son is doing under the rug. At that point, I wanted to smack her, but as I mother I can see why she does it. This book was well written and is a talented writer. I will read the net book, hoping it not as sad as this one.
The Cover of Love (Selene's Pass Trilogy Book 1) by Courtney Shockey is the first book in the Selene's Pass Trilogy. This story is a psychological suspense, haunting and dark emotions. This story will have you sitting on the edge of your seat wanting to see what will come next. You will never see what is coming next!
Jodie Cornett has never known her life, from childhood to adulthood to ever be without tragedy especially when it comes to love. Her heart holds many secrets, will those secrets eventually come out? She was raised on the saying “you protect the ones you love” but how far will she go for that protection? This saying is how she has coped with her life but her world is surrounded by shadows and the light of her life is the darkest of all. What will happen when her personal superhero comes into her life and rescues her? Will she let him? Will he change her future? How will things change when they have a son? Just when she thinks her life is on track, destiny and fate step in. Will fate remind her that she has no control over things that happen?
The characters in this story will pull you into their lives and make you realize that sometimes you find yourself clutching at anything you see as good. These characters will see how fate can change things for them and how it can relent in delivering more misery. What does fate have in store for these characters?
This is my first read by Courtney Shockey. Courtney is a mother of two children and always had a passion to write. She is just starting her writing career and also loves to spend her spare time reading. She is excited to see where this journey will take her. This story is a page turner after page turner. It holds surprises on every page and you will want to see what they are. I highly recommend this story as I know you will love it as much as I have.
The Cover of Love by Courtney Shockey is the first book in the Selene’s Pass Trilogy. Described by Courtney Shockey as a ‘psycho drama’ it tells the story, in her own words, of Jojo. It begins with her early years growing up with her mother and father in a small town. From dealing with traumatic childhood events to learning how to make friends to her first boyfriend the story moves along at quite a brisk pace. The story then goes on to her life as an adult; meeting her husband, their life together and their struggle to start a family. Jojo’s life as a married woman is relatively happy and she and her husband deeply love each other. She does however, keep secrets from him. Although I enjoyed reading this book I found the story to be quite choppy and, at times, difficult to follow. The story would jump forward to several months, even years later with no warning making it difficult to keep track of the storyline. At times, especially around important events in Jojo’s life, I felt that not enough depth, background and detail were given to both the characters and the event. There is some violence and sex in the book but nothing too graphic. They are more implied than anything else. That said however, this book certainly makes you think about how far people will go to protect the ones they love and what cost they are willing to pay. I did enjoy reading this and found myself wanting to know what happens next. It did keep me gripped to the end and I would recommend this book. I rate this book 4 stars
Five Stars In The Cover of Love author Courtney Shockley has written a psychological thriller that is bound to make you question "WHY?". Why does this go on for so long and why won't she do anything to stop him. Jodie grew up an only child, she adored her parents and they adored her. When she was young she was terrifed of her uncle, her father's brother, but her father took care of that problem for her so that she wouldn't be scared any longer. Her father's words to her that day were " We protect the ones we love". Thus becoming the motto for her life. Jodie had so many terrible things happen to her as a young girl that she eventually ran away from home and just kind of "disappeared" for over a year. She climbed out of her fog one day and realized she needed to go home. She was picked up on the roadside by a stranger who chose to help her get home and who stuck by her as she found that her life had yet again taken a bad turn. Flynn was good man and saw Jodie by the roadside and helped her out. Seeing as she was going the same way he was he took her to her family home and stayed with her as long as she needed him. One thing lead to another and Flynn and Jodie ended up married and had a child after many years of trying. This book follows them through their lives as a couple and as parents. Courtney Shockly, the author, does a marvelous job of making you stop and look at the life you have and ask yourself the question, "What would I do in this situation?". I was blown away by this book and while I am nervous about reading the next ones I am also full of anticipation wanting to know what happens next. This book is not for the faint of heart by any means.
A 4 star read for The Cover of Love ( Selene’s Pass Trilogy #1) by Courtney Shockey is a book that will have you an emotional mess from the start. Jodie has known pain and heartache from an early age. Especially when her Uncle comes and visits. That is when she learns that “ you protect the ones you love”. Her father loved her and did just that, protected her and promised he would never hurt her again. Due to the pain her uncle caused her, growing up, boys were the last thing on her mind, she actually wanted nothing to do with them…. until 7th grade when Tommy walks up to her and hands her a note, asking if she wanted to be his girlfriend. He makes her feel safe and comfortable. He becomes one of her best friends and also her boyfriend. They walk home together every day. While swimming in the lake, there is an accident and Jojo once again is heartbroken. She doesn't want to leave her room, talk to anyone or see anyone. She is crushed. Mama tries to brighten her spirits by bringing her horse to see her, hoping it will work. Something spooks the horse and again, poor Jojo is destroyed. ( This poor girl can not catch a break.). When her father falls into depression and can not pull himself out of a liquor bottle, she leaves and doesn't look back. She isn't sure how much time passes but when she wakes up with a clear head one morning, she knows she has to go back. Running outside, she runs into Flynn. He is her guardian angel and never leaves her side. I don't want to give anymore away, my recommendation is that you read it for yourself. Make sure you have plenty of tissues on hand for the beginning of the book, towards the middle and end, you might want to scream and shake something or someone. I hope you enjoy this book as much as I did.
The Cover of Love (Selene’s Pass Trilogy) by Courtney Shockey – 5 Stars This is book one in this trilogy and the first book from this author, a dark and emotional read so be prepared. Jodie Cornett has had to deal with more tragedy and loss than any one should ever have to and this starts from a very young age, it does not seem possible that the heavy burdens could keep on coming. Her father has always instilled in her to “protect the ones she loves”, and Jodie takes this to heart and follows it as a mantra in her life. After everything she has been through, Jodie hits her limit and puts herself in more harm, but the arrival of Flynn Taylor brings new light into the darkest reaches of her life. Flynn saves Jodie and becomes her new hero, leaving Jodie to hope the future as a clear and happy picture. After a few years with the love of her life they are happy with a child of their own, a son and then everything changes again. This story follows the lifeline of Jodie and it is not for the light hearted, a deep and dark story that epitomes the sadness of love and loss combined. It also draws you into an internal debate as to the decisions that Jodie made in this book by following her father’s comments so early in her life. Would you protect the ones you love? Would things turn out differently if you didn’t? Some romance but would classify as a suspense and thriller novel as I never knew where the story was heading and certainly did not expect where it went. My heart went out to Jodie in so many parts of this story and my heart broke during her life with what she has gained and what she has lost.
Excellent read – can’t wait for Book 2 and what that brings.
The Cover of Love by Courtney Shockey is a gripping and heart-breaking psychological thriller. The first novel from the Selene Pass Trilogy series explains the heart-breaking life of a woman from childhood, to the very depths of adulthood.
The novel is about the life of a woman called Jodie Cornett and her struggles and heart-breaking moments of her life. She then meets Flynn Taylor, the love of her life and soon raise a son, Paul, who is rather distant and violent in nature. Things start to happen that affects Jodie’s and her family’s life, and she has to make some rough decisions in order to protect them.
Jodie is an incredibly strong character. She may have her weaknesses in the book, but with whatever she is handed, she deals with it. Family is everything to her, and that is shown throughout the book, no matter the circumstances, her family must be protected at all costs.
Flynn is a gentleman in every single way. He cherishes and loves his wife the way she deserves to, and loves his family. He can be naive at times, but that makes Flynn an even sweeter and more loveable character.
Paul, on the other hand, is cold and aggressive. He is cold towards everybody else other than his mother, and shows disturbing signs of his behaviour throughout the novel, which puts Jodie to the test.
“We protect the ones we love.”
The quote is a poignant message of the novel and a very big theme too. The novel was written beautifully and had me wanting more and more! The novel is not for the fainthearted, as it contains rather graphic and mature scenes. But other than that, a brilliant read!!
The Cover of Love by Courtney Shockey is a murder and psychological drama all rolled into one. When something bad happens to JoJo as a child, it sets the mood and they background for the entire novel. When her parents find out what had happened to her, they take care of it and then later explain that family takes care of the ones they love. When her mother gets hurt, she takes time off to help take care of her mother. After a few years, her mother passes away and her father can’t take it so he drinks more than what he was. JoJo runs away and after a few years finds Flynn. Flynn takes her home only to find that her father passed away a few months before and now she has guilt over his passing because she didn’t take care of her own. Flynn doesn’t want to leave her alone so he takes her with him to see his family. After a few more years’ pass, Flynn and JoJo fall in love and get married. They try for years to have a child only to have one little boy. JoJo has a secret that she keeps hidden about their little boy Paul. When things start happening in their little town, JoJo figures out the truth and they move to another town only to have it happen over and over again when they move from town to town. She remembers what she promised her mother and father and protects her own. Courtney Shockey is an exceptional writer who will leave in goosebumps when reading her novel. The way she writes is the grown up version of Goosebumps and will leave you hooked and wanting to read more after the first one.
The Cover of Love By Courtney Shockey 4 Stars Those who endure and suffer loss will hold onto anything and all they see is good, even when it is not the best decision...This is Jodie's story. From childhood to adulthood this is not for the faint of heart. "Family is all we have at the end of the day." This story is about Jodie Corbett, her life as a child is full of tragedies. She wants just to be loved and to keep her family safe. When her life is crashing down around her, she meets Flynn Taylor. He shows up just when Jodie needs someone to be there for her to lean on. Jodie believes she has put her past and all her misery behind her. she realizes that loving and protecting those at any cost met not always be the smart thing to do. How far will she go to save the ones she loves. Tragedy from loss and death can shape our outlook and views that sometimes no one can understand or reason with. We all grieve in our own way, interpret what death means our own way, so who knows what way is the right way. Death continues to be a part of Jodie's life. She struggles through but the secrets she has kept slowly start to break her. This book was such a rollercoaster of emotions. It ranged from anxiety, horror, disappointment and heartache. there are so many twists and turns that it was impossible to guess what was going to happen next. It makes you think would I do the same if i were in her shoes.
"The Cover of Love" is the debut book for author Courtney Shockey, and it is a mindf***! Don't get me wrong I love this book, but it will leave you trying to wrap your mind around why Jodie did the things she did. It takes you through her childhood and on into adulthood, where things become even more strange as the years pass. This is the first book in the trilogy and I can't wait to read the rest of the series! Jodie survived through a very rough childhood and teen years, to finally lead a "normal" life. Her wonderful adoring husband, Flynn, and their son Paul are the most important people in her life. The secrets that she hides can and will lead to total destruction of all she holds dear, or will it? Everyone knows "You protect the ones you love", no matter the cost. "The Cover of Love" is a novella length at around 150 pages, but ends at a good stopping point so it doesn't feel like a cliffhanger. I'm not a fan of cliffhangers so this is great for me, also book two "The Shadow of Hope" is already out so I can dive into that very soon! Here's the Amazon link for this awesome book which is free with KindleUnlimited: https://www.amazon.com/Cover-Love-Sel...
Thank you so much Courtney for sending me a copy of this book in exchange for a review!!
I am so grateful to have read this book!! It was everything I hoped it would be going into it!! It is packed full of twists and turns that will leave you guessing until the very end! I had to read this entire book in one sitting due to the fact that I needed to know what was going to happen next! I was constantly on the edge of my seat!
This novel follows the life of Jodie as she grows up from a child into an adult. Throughout this time, she has to deal with heartbreak, loss as well as try to figure out what the future holds for her. From the very beginning, you knew the Jodie wasn't going to lead a very easy life. At a young age, she is dealt with some very challenging situations that would be difficult for anyone to manage and deal with, let alone someone so young.
When her husband Flynn and her son Paul come into the story, even more shocking elements come into play! Many of these elements, I was not expecting and completely shocked me!
I devoured this book and loved every second of it!! I definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a good psychological thriller novel!
I met Courtney Shockey in passing at an author event and after talking to her, she handed me her book. If I knew what I grabbed that day, I would have read it sooner. Much to my surprise, this wasn't romance. I just assume books I grab at events are romance, nothing wrong with them, it's just what genre is mostly there. There are romantic-ish relationships in the book, but no, This is something else.
The first chapter caught me my surprise and I couldn't stop reading. I felt like a fish on a hook. Throughout the whole book, I was on the edge of my seat being reeled into what would happen next. She sent me on a rollercoaster in the form of a psychological thriller. As novella's go, it was well done. I felt like the story flowed very well - seriously from page 1 to 148, I was hypnotized. It's tough to fit so much between the pages; She did a great job but I craved more in few places and wish she would have gone deeper into the details at times. All around, I really enjoyed it and can't wait to read more of her work. Courtney Shockey has earned a fan here!
The Cover of Love (Selene’s Pass Trilogy Book 1) - Courtney Shockey - 5 stars I read this 150 page story blind. I knew nothing about it going in. Based on the cover art, I had preconceived notions about what it would be. I was so so wrong. I’m giving this short story 5 stars because I can’t give it 10. Honestly, I don’t even know what genre this book be classified as. I do not want to give anything away about any of the book so I’m going to write about the style of writing. Courtney Shockey wrote a compelling page turner. Often times when reading, I will speed read (reading quickly and skipping words because I’m an instant gratification type of gal and NEED to know RIGHT NOW what’s going on). That is NOT the case in this book. There is just enough detail and information to keep me intrigued but not so much that I had to skip words. The writing was descriptive and flowed nicely while developing the relationships of the characters and giving an insight into whatever it is that I read. I just know this book is going to haunt me for a bit, and that’s NOT a bad thing. I am a fan of Courtney Shockey and will read anything she writes.
The Cover of Love by Courtney Scockey is book one in Selene’s Pass trilogy. I give this book 5 stars. *****
This novel follows the life of Jodie as she grows up from a child into an adult. Throughout this time Jodie experiences more than a child or young adult should have to. Such as heart and loss. Jodie meets Tommy in school. They become the best of friends. Tommy is Jodie's first love. They make future plans to be together. Then the unthinkable happens. Jodie decides to disappear for a while. A stranger picks Jodie up one day. This is where we meet Flynn Taylor.
As time moves forward Flynn makes Jodie feel normal for once. Flynn becomes a wonderful husband and father. When things seem to be going great they start falling apart again. How far will you go to cover up something for someone you love?
“ We protect the ones we love.”
I devoured this book! I definitely recommend this book to anyone who is looking for a great psychological thriller.
How far would you go to protect the one’s you love?
This book does not stop! From page one you are dumped into this poor girls tragedies. Just when you think that there is a shred of hope or light at the end of the tunnel there is another twist or turn that blows up. A complete psychological thriller and love story all woven together rarely turns out as good as this book manages to do! I felt like the first part of the quote in the introduction was absolutely a perfect description of the backdrop for this book. “Love and consume, devour, and destroy.” This is not your typical romance and I found it very satisfying and a great change of pace. I’d recommend it to anyone who is looking for something different and needs a bit of something different than your happily ever after books.
this book is sick, twisted, and demented and I like it! I don't know what the heck goes through Ms. Shockeys mind when she writes but I hope it keeps running in there. if your a fan of WTFs, you will love this book also.
This was a crazy story. It isn't my typically read. I'm not sure what to really say. It is intense and definitely not a typically love story like I thought it was going to be.
I learned about this book at a comicpalooza where I met the author and I got excited to read her books!!!
The story itself is very interesting...full of twists and loss and pain for the main character. I though at first and based on the title it would be about a love story; but I was very wrong! The story quickly turned into a different kind of story! I enjoyed reading it!
However, i felt the boom was like an abridged story of the real book!! It lacked depth! One page I'm getting used to the idea that she was a drug addict the next she meets a stranger then 2 years passed then she's engaged to the stranger she met when she woke up! One page she's getting married the next she's having a miscarriage then getting rape then having a baby from who? What?!? That's how I felt the entire book...of Courtney would have spend a little more time detailing the characters and adding depth to the story the book would have been a bit longer but a much better novel! I needed time to get attached to the storyline!!
Overall I have it a 4 stars because the story was good! I cannot give it a 3 because it was that interesting but I cannot give it a 5 because it was too quick...
*I received a copy of this book to be honestly reviewed*
Whoa. I mean, DUDE. This book had me bawling more than once! Full of heartbreak and horrors, I was entranced throughout. The sorrows that Jodie felt were so intense, I felt them, too. I barely breathed!! She lives through terrible thing after terrible thing, only to come out on the other side to see MORE terrible things. I mean, this lady must have done something completely horrible in a past life! I'd like to say that I read it all in one sitting, but honestly it took too. Because I had to put the effing thing to the side and cry before I could go on. I kept messaging a friend and cursing the author for ripping my heart out haha.
It was very well written, and flowed extremely well. It was so easy to get into it and stay there, I'm definitely a new and huge fan. Buying the next book ASAP!
Bob says: 5 Platypires and going on my favorites list!
EVERYTHING BUT THE KITCHEN SINK A good story has conflict or a problem the hero must solve or surmount. The heroine in this book has every problem known to man thrown at her. As soon as she copes with one situation the next one appears. The events come thick and fast leaving her little time to catch her breath between one catastrophe and the next. I would not usually choose to read a book with Love’ in the title, but I’m so glad I stumbled over this one. Part psychological drama, part relationship, part life story. My only criticism is that to get the full story I will need to buy book 2 and then book 3, but I am going to do just that – good book and a nice take on dysfunctional life by the author.
The Cover of Love is book one in the Selene's Pass Trilogy by Courtney Shockey. We follow Jodie Cornett from childhood through adulthood. Jodie just can not seem to catch a break. From a very early age she has had tragedy after tragedy happen to her. This story shows us a very up close insight into the lives that are rocked by things we personally never have to deal with. Starting at a young age we see the start of a child dealing with abuse from a relative and it all just goes from there. When her life literally just crumbles from beneath her in her teens she just can not handle it anymore and ends up leaving home. Falling in with the wrong kinds of people she loses a year of her life. When finally deciding to go back home she learns her actions lost her more than a year. Flynn is a blessing when he comes into her life, but even blessings can lead to demise. We never know what life is going to through at us, but I doubt Jodie and Flynn ever thought it would go this badly! This book is one that I can't even say pulls on your heart strings. It doesn't! It completely obliterates your heart into tiny pieces!! It made me bawl my eyes out like it was happening to me! I can honestly say Courtney Shockey has a new fan in me! Her writing takes you on an emotional roller-coaster! The reason for the 4 stars is that I really wanted more details in some places. I felt like certain spots were too rushed and we did not get much of a explanation. Over all though best read I have read that was not a romance!
The Cover of Love is a very tragic book that has a dark side to it for the main character. Jodie as a young child was abused and her father told her that you protect the ones you love. Throughout the entire book she keeps hearing that in her head “you protect the ones you love”. She loses a dear friend or what she called her first boyfriend in a swimming accident at a young age and that is seems to set the pace of the entire book. After yet another couple other tragic event in her life she meets a man and falls in love. Flynn in an amazing man that just wants to bring happiness to Jodie's life. After years of trying to have a baby she finally does but along with that pregnancy comes a lot of guilt that she never tells Flynn about. She finds disturbing things along the way that her son does and she protects him by not telling anyone and hides the evidence. As the years go on more and more disturbing things happen and Jodie keeps covering for her son because she hears her father’s voice telling her “you protect the ones you love”. At one point Jodie convinces Flynn they need to move to start a new life. For a while things are better but end up going bad again. There are so much tragic and dark things that happen in Jodie’s life it’s amazing that she is as put together as she is. By the time she realizes that her son is a very disturbed boy the stuff that he has done can’t be reversed and she decided there is only one thing to do and that is to run.
4.5 stars out of 5 This is a classic do not judge a book by its cover scenario. I assumed that this was going to be a romantic read, so imagine my surprise when I read this amazingly dark and twisted tale of a woman’s hard life of living with death and disaster. It is a wonderful story of strength and perseverance. While this may be a disturbing story full of darkness it is also a story of the extents a woman will go to protect those she loves, because in fact that is what family does. We read as Jodie grows from a little girl who lives in a farm in the middle of nowhere to a grown woman with a child of her own. It seems to me that she is just plain cursed, destined to live a life in mourning. She makes it through one tragedy after another slowly losing a piece of herself every time tragedy strikes. How she picks herself back up is still a wonder to me. This for me was a great fast paced story that I really could put down. I kept thinking that she has to have a happy ending, this can’t be her life, I kept hoping and for me that is a mark of a great story. I was so invested in her and her ability to keep pushing that I didn’t want the story to end. Since this is the first book in the trilogy, I am hoping to see Jodie and her son again, just for closure, but if I don’t I know I will be thinking about this story for a long time to come.
4 Stars The Cover of Love is the first book in Selene’ Pass Trilogy, by Courtney Shockey. It is a psychological thriller that really packs a punch! I may need some serious therapy after reading it! I can’t even begin to explain the story as well as I would like to, without giving away spoilers- but I will try. The story follows Jodie Cornett as she grows from a young child through to her adulthood. Jodie has had so much sorrow, pain and suffering in her life- that shocking, gut wrenching, heart-in-your-mouth, ugly crying, heart aching type of devastation! Jodie hits rock-bottom and I thought she wouldn’t be able to find her way back, when she is ‘rescued’ by the most kind, caring, divinely handsome banker, Flynn Taylor. Together they build a life for themselves basking in their love for one another and the deep connection that they have. I found myself really rooting for Jodie- I really wanted her to finally ‘catch-a-break’. When they find out Jodie is pregnant, they are over-joyed and so excited to be bringing a baby into their lives; a flesh and blood manifestation of their love. Will this much wanted baby be able to finally erase some of the heartache and tragedy that has haunted Jodie for so long? “You protect the ones you love”. This ‘psycho drama’ had me on an emotional rollercoaster from the very first chapter. I couldn’t and wouldn’t put it down because I really wanted Jodie to finally have a ‘win’ and triumph over her past- so I kept reading!! Ms. Shockey had me on the edge of my seat in an anxiety ridden state, with my heart-in- my-mouth the whole time! I got to the end of the book and nearly ended up crawling into a corner of the room, assuming a foetal position and rocking back and forth- because of the total mind fu*k that I had received! That was a day and a half ago, it has taken me that long to try and ‘digest’ everything I read and I’m still not sure I have wrapped my mind around it all. I’m definitely still recovering! At best this story will leave you with a ‘book hangover’; at worst it will put you in a ‘book coma’. I am somewhere between the two!! This is the first book of Courtney Shockey’s that I have read and I SHOULD say that it will be my last- but that would be a lie. She has a way of burrowing deep beneath your skin that has you crawling back for more. Ms. Shockey gets top marks for the lingering chills and the mind numbing effects that her writing skills elicit!!!!
