A Hearts On Fire Review

THREE & A HALF STARS--Sara York's "Vampire Daycare" introduces a few unique twists tot the tried and true vampire mythology. In this short story, vampires are protectors of enhanced humans that live in a town called Harmony set on the U.S. East Coast. These humans are kept a secret from outsiders and all vampires that live within the town are sworn not only to protect with their lives but to also guard the secret of the town's existence.

The main character, Jethro aka Jet is one of the lead protectors in the band of Harmony vampires and there has been a number of murders committed to the town's parents of twins. The vampires are stuck caring for the orphans because the enhanced humans just can't parent correctly. (*shrug* yet they found the time to make babies-just saying) The suspense part is easily guessable and the reasons behind the murders were kind of weak. And yes, maybe you're thinking if there are humans with superpowers throughout the entire town of Harmony...couldn't they just stop the murders ahead of time? (Or maybe it's just me?)

But aside from the shoddy suspense, there are some cute moments. Anyone giving love to baby orphans and toddlers are bound to get a few 'Aws' out of me. It plucks the maternal(or paternal)heartstrings.

What is the best part of this story? The lust filled instalove between Jet and the human ex-solider/ daycare worker, Travis. Hubba-hubba! That was possessive and hot!! I like my vampire sex like that, all sex-tension filled, possessively biter-rific and hot melted sex like. Two thumbs up to Travis and Jet burning up the smexy tension scenes. I wish the story had more focus on the main characters and less on the town/orphans/murders.

The story peaked at the culmination of the Jet/Travis flirtathon. There's sex in the woods, folks...'twas hot! :D The ending for the pair was good, not great but I am happy at the end. Plus it makes for a good story to read when you want something short but with an actual plot.

***** Great M/M Vampire short story !!! Loved this one !! ***** It's a quick read, but full of descriptions, feelings; it's a wonderful fast paced look at the town of Harmony.

Slim yet super strong, Jet, is one of many Vampires that protect the town from outsiders, and they run a children's daycare for the orphaned kids. The townsfolk have come under attack and parents are being killed.

Big ex-military, muscled, hairy, Travis, comes into the scene as his security firm is needed to babysit the kids during the day, so they can get sunshine. This is the one thing the vamps can't do. Jet and Travis are immediately attracted but first things first, the children's safety. Wonderful characters we come to know through their actions, and the main information of the quiet town and it's strange inhabitants are hinted, but not completely revealed. It is a delightful read, deeply emotional, sweet, fiercely protective, and interesting. Evil lurks of course, and their is some violence in the fight that threatens the peaceful town.
I fell for the town, the guys, and the kids !! The sex is explosive yet tender, and their relationship does happen fast, but it is a short story after all.
This can stand alone, but I would love for more from this tale, more stories of these Vamps of Harmony, yes, yes, yes !
Highly recommend this very different take on Vampires and their role.

Good Story

I liked this story and the characters in it. This would make a good series about the people of the town and the vampires. It is well written and the characters were being developed through out the story. I'm looking forward to my next read from Sara York.

Great short story!

This was a great short story about a group of vampires that are protecting a town of gifted humans that are being murdered and leaving behind children that need humans to take care of them during the day time hours. One of the vampires falls for one of the humans employed to care for the children.

In a Nutshell: Good set up I liked of vampires running an orphanage but romance was underdeveloped.

The Set Up: Vampire Jet is one of the sworn protectors of a mysterious Appalachian town where the inhabitants all have psychic gifts. When parents start being mysteriously murdered, Jet and his fellow vampire protectors create an orphanage to care for the children. Mortal Travis is hired to help protect the children in the daytime and he and Jet share a connection. But the town’s enemy isn’t going to allow a vampire and human to become mates.

Why I Read this Book: I loved the idea of a vampire daycare so the synopsis caught me.

What I Liked: As I suspected, I liked the setting. The Appalachian town full of gifted people is protected by vampires and I liked this unique setting. Jet’s integrity and commitment to the town is mirrored in the other vampires so there is a community of protectors. I suspected who the murderer was early on but that was okay since I’m not a big mystery fan.

What I Didn’t Like: This is a lightning fast romance that fell very flat for me. I liked both Jet and Travis but their attraction is the only reason why they become a couple and even this happens quickly and inexplicably. Travis had some family issues that made him take the job helping Jet anyway and that is resolved in three paragraphs mid-story. I know this is a novella so everything had to happen quickly but it felt rushed with no emotional development between the leads.

IMO: Wouldn’t mind revisiting the vampire daycare protectors but only if the romance is much more developed than this one.

What a wonderful read. I love a vampire book, and this was different from what I've been reading. I love the premise that vampires are watching over a town of talented individuals, taking care of them and protecting them.
I really enjoyed this book, and hope to see more from Sara York about this series!! I would read the heck out of them.

3.5 Stars Cold heart warm empathy blazing not passion

The town of Harmony is a very unique place. It is a secret location. Warded by Witches & Warlocks to keep its location confidential. There are a few references to the bogus Salem Witch Trials, being a reason for the formation of the town for specific paranormals. I recently saw the play, THE CRUCIBLE about the terrible ramifications of the Salem Witch Trials. Thus the creation of a refuge for people with extra sensory perception. A safe haven until recently. Now Vampires guards are volunteering to protect the residents who were being killed off.

Their deaths having involuntary lead to the necessity of the creation of a 24 hour Vampire Daycare to care for the surviving children. In this story the Vampires had the traditional and realistic fear of the Sun's rays. The Vampires spent their days in underground bunkers, only coming out after the Sun set. This set up was not the best for the young mostly Human children who needed to be allowed out in the Sun. But how was that possible when the Sun would cause death to the Vampires?

So they needed to find someone to guard the youngsters to guard them. But who could be trusted to come in and help with the investigation of the spate of deaths also? Someone who was able to stand the rays of the Sun? Making it even more of a precarious situation, Jet an older trusted Vampire leader has been having unfulfilled blood cravings that the synthetic (syth - blood) just was no longer satisfying.

This story was unexpectedly violent and tender, as a murderer viciously, without remorse killed and the cold blooded "undead" Vampires showed compassion & love to orphaned babies and young children. These old school Vampires are so scary dudes and dudettes. And what does it take to win the heart of one of their warriors for peace?

Fairly well drawn out lead characters, skimpy supporting characters, an inventive plot but lame action sequence writing make a decent but overall unsatisfying read in this uneven tale about a coven of vampires sworn to protecting an entire secret town of "special" human citizens. The mystery element of who is killing off the humans is also handled poorly with little done in the way of involving the reader to either make them care or be invested in the very sloppy solution provided in the last few pages. The romance works well enough but precious little else does. I'm looking forward to reading more from this author and seeing her work improve as she has great potential.

Good plot little rushed

Really liked the plot of this book, just wish it wasn’t quite as rushed. I feel like it needed a little filling out. But still enjoyed.,

It could have been a good story if it was longer....absolutely nothing was explained...why we're the people of Harmony so special...why we're they killing parents of twins??? Only a few authors can write a short story and you feel like u've read a novel....This book.did nothing but leave questions..why write it...gave to stars cause I finished....

A short love story.

Well written, but very short, Sara York is an accomplished writer and has again given us a beautiful love story. Not quite long enough for the characters to be fully fleshed out, but the story is compelling enough to have me reading the book in one sitting.

I did love the daycare aspect of a vampire book. Really different. I would have like this one a lot better had it been longer. Could be a good series with the townspeople and vampires.
Jet and Travis had some good chemistry going on! The ending seemed a little rushed but cute story.
