Once again Fox has created a novel that had me hooked on the suspense and rooting for the loveable characters that she’s created. The tightly woven plot kept me guessing throughout. The insightful analysis within the novel adds an extra deep chilling feeling to the entire tale. The dual lines of suspense running through the plot were captivatingly haunting. . I also enjoyed the way that the relationship between the main characters developed. The history between them was tempered by the true friendship that we see today.
Ethan and Lizzie’s similar yet completely different pasts made them interesting to get to know and very different from the vast array of romance couples out there. I loved Lizzie’s strength and caring, even in the face of utter terror. Ethan’s mood swings and bouts of indecision were well explained and easy to understand, yet at the same time, they were so bountiful that after a while I found them hard to swallow. When he finally came into his own I nearly cheered.
This novel combined the fast pace of a romantic suspense with the hopefulness of a contemporary romance. It was a fantastic mix that I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend to others who enjoy the genre.
Please note that I received a complimentary copy of this work in exchange for an honest review.

Very good book that kept me hooked until the very end. Ethan and Lizzie had known each other as teenagers, when Lizzie was in the same foster home as Ethan's youngest sister Josie. Lizzy had had a crush on Ethan, and when she met him again years later she discovered the feelings were still there. A passionate night together left her pregnant with his baby, and not sure whether to tell him.
Ethan's father was convicted of murdering Ethan's mother and also being a serial killer. Ethan was the one who found their mother's body and his testimony helped convict his father. He is still haunted by the memories and swore long ago that he would never pass his tainted blood on to another. He's stunned to find out that Lizzy is pregnant, but determined to do his best to be a father to his child.
Lizzy came to Ethan because she has been receiving creepy notes and gifts since her pregnancy became public. When the stalker broke into her house twice, she had enough and fled to Ethan. He is determined to keep her and the baby safe, but also try to keep an emotional distance from her.
I loved the development of their relationship. Because they have known each other for so long they are familiar with each other's pasts. Lizzy doesn't judge Ethan by what his father did, she knows the man he really is. Ethan has tried his best to put his past behind him and devotes his time to his ranch. His love of animals shows that the ability to care is there if he will just open himself up to it. Lizzie has also made a good life for herself and is determined to take care of her baby. The trouble that Lizzie is in brings out Ethan's protectiveness. Having her in his home makes him realize how empty his life has been, but he is wary of making a commitment. One of the things I liked best about the book is that Ethan and Lizzy talk to each other about their pasts and their fears. It isn't easy, but she gets him to open up to her about his father. Even when they argue they are able to admit when they are wrong and apologize. I loved seeing them grow closer as they adjust to the idea of being parents. There are some good conversations between them about the baby. It takes almost losing her for Ethan to realize that she is more important than his fears.
There are three suspense stories woven throughout the book. The first is who is stalking Lizzy. Someone is leaving creepy notes and gifts about the baby, and Lizzy is scared. She goes to Ethan for protection and for help in figuring out who it is. I had a feeling about the stalker, part of which was correct but part of it was a surprise. The final confrontation was intense, but the danger was dealt with quickly by Ethan.
The second is the story of the alphabet killer, which started in the first book and looks like it will continue through the series. It looks like a copycat, who is imitating the methods used by the Coltons' father twenty years earlier. With several of the family members in law enforcement, they are all determined to find out who it is. In this book we actually see one of the murders committed and who does it, but the motivation is still unknown. The killer is also still on the loose.
The third is what is going on with the Coltons' father. He has been in prison for twenty years for killing his wife and others. He is now dying and wants to see each of his children before he dies. To make it happen, he promises to give each one a clue about what he did with their mother's body. The Coltons are a close family in spite of having been separated into foster care when he went to prison. Each of them deals with their past in their own way, and most are not happy about their father's demand. I love how they are there for each other, even when they argue. In this book it is Ethan's turn to confront his feelings and his father.

The Coltons of Texas series has a large family suffering through years of personal torment related to a past tragedy, and none have been more affected than Ethan Colton. Having a father who murdered innocent people would be bad enough, but the cold-blooded man also killed his own wife. Ethan was only seven when he told information that put his dad in prison, and being the son of a killer still influences many of his current choices. Lizzie Conner challenges him from the moment she comes back into his life, and neither are ever the same because of one memorable night. Addison Fox makes her contribution to the Coltons of Texas series not only intriguing but very heartfelt. COLTON’S SURPRISE HEIR has numerous mysteries and profound emotional issues.
When Elizabeth Conner came to see Ethan Colton, the Texas rancher definitely did not expect the news his childhood friend delivered. It seems their one passionate night together after meeting at a rodeo resulted in her being pregnant. Though he never wanted to have kids because of his inherited background, it looks like he and Lizzie are going to be parents in three months. Ethan just hopes whatever made his own father a serial killer will not be passed on to the child.
Although Lizzie had not planned to inform Ethan about the baby just yet because she knew his views on having children, some disturbing incidents drove her to seek his assistance for the safety of their baby. Not knowing who is actually behind the threats has her fearful of what might happen next. While Ethan had no desire to ever be a dad, he does not hesitate in taking measures to keep Lizzie and his child from being harmed.
There is a powerful connection between family members in the Coltons of Texas series, and Addison Fox proves this point during several scenes where the love between the siblings comes through loud and clear. I could easily see these discussions taking place, where disagreements are often debated yet backed by much concern. While Ethan had thought he was happy living his solitary life on his successful ranch, the presence of Lizzie makes him realize what he has been missing. I really felt for him and all the problems that he has lived with for so long, especially since he had such a difficult time expressing his real feelings. Lizzie also had much to overcome by growing up without parents, and I respected her ability to be so self-sufficient. These two make a wonderful couple, as the passion and trust between them is honestly genuine.
Who is once again killing people in their town is certainly a big mystery, and I was left baffled though clues are scattered throughout. This is an ongoing subject matter in the series, and it is interesting to see how details are handled in each book. I am very eager to discover what will occur in the upcoming Coltons of Texas story because of facts given in this novel. The possible danger to Lizzie is also mystifying, and I never knew when a threat was going to pop up or how alarming it might be. Danger and emotions are equally balanced in COLTON’S SURPRISE HEIR.

This was a fairly good book and I always love the secret baby trope. The love story was sweet and touching but the story seemed long and drawn out. Not really any highs or lows to hold my interest although I did complete the book.

What a great story! This is one of those books, that once you start it is very hard to put down, until you finish it, and then you wish it would continue on, because you feel attached to the characters, and you want to hang around them. Thankfully, this is book two in a new series, so there's more opportunity for that.
I adored Ethan and Lizzie together, they had the chemistry, the attraction is palpable, and when they are in close proximity to each other, they just melt, become one, always standing together against the threat, danger, and malice of the world.
And they talk, they talk about the hard things, the difficult topics, about life, the choices they made, the memories they share, they talk to each other, you know, like normal people do. And they don't always agree, they argue, they even fight couple times. But they are willing to admit their weaknesses, they admit when they are wrong, or are acting like a jerk, they take a stock, stand back, and adjust as needed. You really see how they grow even closer together, and how they grow as parents to be, as a couple, as people.
And while all this is going on, the story doesn't lack suspense, fear, danger, action, even murder. The story is built so well, that the multiple layers of threat and danger exists at the same time as the romance is developing. It is intense, the jeopardy is constant, and the instability is growing.
The siblings, the Coltons, have had a hard life, with their mother dead, by their serial killer father, and Josie, the youngest of them missing, my heart went out for them. But they have all managed to build a good life, a life to be admired, they are solid, hard working people, who support each other, and stand together, no matter how hard it is at times, and how much they annoy each other every now and then.
Oh yes, the Coltons has won my heart, and I will look forward to get to know them better as the year folds out, and more books come out in the series.

I really enjoyed this book. Lizzie Conner has know Ethan Colton since she was 10 years old. She shared a foster home with his sister. When they reconnected after they had both grown up, Passion burned HOT between them Leaving Lizzie pregnant. Lizzie had a great job, that she loved. She had not intension of telling Ethan that he was going to be a father any time soon. Ethan had been in foster care because his dad was in prison for being a serial killer. Ethan was afraid of having children with that kind of sickness running through his own blood.
After Lizzie announced her pregnancy at work she started receiving flowers, cards, and notes that scared her. She knew she had to ask for Ethan's protection when the notes escalated. She found a note wrapped around a rattle in the crib, inside her home. His brother, and sister were both in law enforcement.
In the small town there is also a alphabet serial killer. The killer started with someone's name that began with the letter A. So far the police, and detective's does not know if the serial killer is after Lizzie, and she will be the next target. The suspense of the story was very good. I loved how protective Ethan was of Lizzie. Once he found out he was going to be a dad, he embraced the idea with love, and hope. Great book!

Ethan Colton and Lizzie Conner are made for each other but Ethan has a lot of work to do before they can become a couple. It all starts with the two meeting for the first time in several years. It is only one night but a baby is the result. When Lizzie is in danger she turns to Ethan for help and that starts the beginning of a long-term relationship between the two. Add in the Alphabet Killer still killing and the man obsessed with Lizzie for additional tension. This is the second book in the Coltons of Texas series. It can stand-alone but it is early in the series so get book one so you can read in order.

This story has everything that I like in a book. I love that there was romance, suspense and a plot that ran so deep. This is my first read in this series and I have so much to catch up on. I have to not only read book 1 but there are a handful more and I have to read them because I need to know what happened to their mother. How could their father be keeping the location of their mother’s burial a secret and in order for him to tell them where she is his children must visit him. But in this story Ethan Colton is the Colton most scarred. He is the one that found his mother with the bullseye and with his testimony he put this father behind bars for the rest of his life. Now Ethan has just found out that he is going to be a father and that scared the living life out of him. But Lizzie Conner is going to make him see that just because his father was a serial killer doesn’t mean that he is anything like him or that the baby is going to be at jeopardy. Ethan is going to have to keep Lizzie safe because someone is after her and his baby.
Colton’s Surprise Heir was a good read. Ms. Fox writing is clear and focused. Her characters are well developed. The romance between Ethan and Lizzie is sweet and loving.
I can’t wait to read more of The Coltons of Texas Series!!

Ethan and Lizzie knew each other from way back, but not seen each other for years. Then by chance meet up again at a rodeo, and things gets rather heated up.
But imagine Ethan's surprise when come into the kitchen and find Lizzie cooking breakfast. Very easy to notice she is very much in the family way. That sure not planned, he didn't want a baby, and she knew this.
But Lizzie is running from danger, and needs his help. He would do anything to protect her and the baby. This is one that will keep you reading. Would recommend to others.
Still more books for this series on the Coltons of Texas.

A pretty good book. My only critique is that Ethan didn't feel like he went through an arc. Because of this, it didn't feel like he earned the happily ever after. Lizzie desserves better.

I rated the book 3.5 but rounded to 4 on Goodreads
COLTON’S SURPRISE HEIR (THE COLTONS OF TEXAS #2) is filled with suspense that surrounds the Colton family. The siblings, minus one, are all present in the story, trying to find out where their mom’s body was buried by their dad after he murdered her twenty years ago. He’s a serial killer who’s behind bars but wants to make peace with his offspring now that he’s ill and doesn’t have long to live.
Fox’s COLTON’S SURPRISE HEIR was not what I expected. There are at least three storylines going on involving murders and copycat murders and other crimes including stalking. There’s also one that involves an unexpected baby on the way. The stories intertwine seamlessly but this is also Ethan and Lizzie’s story. At times it’s hot and other times they are trying to find their way with each other especially since they only had a one night stand about six months before after not seeing each other for over ten years and a surprise is on its way.
The Coltons and Lizzie grew up in foster homes but seem to have made decent lives for themselves – except for the missing sibling, Josie, who is the youngest Colton and was Lizzie’s best friend. There is a darkness throughout since they are the children of a serial killer some who have gone into law enforcement as a result. The copycat murderer killing women with names in alphabetical order in their county isn’t helping nor is whoever is stalking Lizzie and wants her and her baby to be theirs!
The descriptions of the land and the letters to their father are vivid and make me feel that I am there. There are cowboys, law enforcement, family and friends, coworkers, dinners and meetings. Emotions run high throughout – tears, sadness, anger, fear, hurt, laughter, some happiness, loving and love. There was closure on one front but still a lot of loose ends. It seems understandable since there are ten more books regarding the Coltons but it wasn’t what I expected going in.
Fox is a new to me author and I will look for her other romantic suspense and contemporary romance books and add them to my always growing to be read pile. I also hope to find the other books in this series so loose ends can be tied up.

I have enjoyed reading several of the Colton books, especially The Colton's of Oklahoma series. When I spotted this Colton's of Texas series story, I really wanted to check it out. Happily, it had the same great sense of family and wonderful characters I've come to expect in the Colton books.
Ethan's father is a convicted killer. He was the one to discover his mother's murdered body as a small child and to give the testimony which convicted his father. The experience scarred him and left him unwilling to ever pass on his genetics through a family of his own. Unfortunately for him, a once long time friend and recent former fling, Lizzie, shows up pregnant with his child. Not only is she pregnant, she is also being stalked. Though he never wanted to be a father, there is no way he is going to let anyone harm his child. Lizzie trusts Ethan to protect her, but can't trust him with her heart. She has always wanted a forever with him, but forever may not be in Ethan's vocabulary.
This story had plenty of suspense and a fast moving plot. I loved Ethan's big family and the connection to the Oklahoma Colton's series.
I received an ARC from Net Galley for review.

Lots of mystery. A couple of the mysteries carry over for the series. It does a good job making me want to find out just who is the killer. Where is Josie? and where is Ethan's mother buried.
This is one series that you will want to read in order so the mystery stays a mystery till revealed.
Ethan Colton comes from a big family. His father is in jail because he was a serial killer and Ethan at seven testified against him when he found his mother's body. Ethan does not plan to have kids because he does not want to pass down his genes.
Lizzie Conner was raised in foster care and one of her foster sister was Ethan's sister.Josie. Lizzie shows up at his ranch six months pregnant and someone is stalking her. Lizzie has liked Ethan since she was very young and was glad to run into him six months ago.
I was given this ebook from NetGalley and Harlequin to read for the purpose of giving a honest review.

I was given this ebook from NetGalley and Harlequin to read for the purpose of giving a honest review.

Thanks to Goodreads, I won this book without having read the Oklahoma Colton's series. It is fine to read as a standalone novel. Lots of family history in this novel and I would have given it more stars, but was troubled at the lack of resolution with Ethan's father. However, I agree that it would be hard to deal with the fact that his father is a convicted killer and Ethan was the one whose testimony sent him to jail. Ethan has declared he will never be a father fearing that his family history will recur but the entire novel is dedicated to changing his mind in the form of Lizzie, his old friend and newer rodeo fling, when she turns up pregnant with his baby on his doorstep. Not only is she pregnant, she is also being stalked. Lots of suspense leading up to a resolution and hopefully a happier future for this family.

Once I got into this book I just couldn't put it down. I loved that there was so much going on. I loved there was plenty of backstory to understand each of the characters. Then there was that ABC killer and the fact that Lizzie is starting to get some threatening messages. Whether or not both are connected its questions throughout the book. Theres also the fact that the missing Colten sister might be appearing at a strange time when everything seems to be going wrong. I loved the mystery, I loved the romance, between the two. There so much to love about his book I highly recommend you lovely readers to check it out.

After a one night stand, Lizzie comes to Ethan with the news that she's pregnant, and someone has been threatening her. They circle each other warily as trust starts to re-build between them, adding to their issues is the fact that there is a serial killer on the loose and it looks like Lizzie might be the next target.
A good continuation of the series, you don't really have to read the previous book to read this one, the only thing (besides family) that links the two stories is the serial killer.

The second part of a series. They've known each other since they were kids and then whey spend a night together which leaves her pregnant. But she doesn't tell him until someone starts sending her weird notes.
Really good. I love how the two cases are intertwined and the links that are made. The family dinners are interesting. But I love Liz. She's a great character that you feel the need to protect.

I loved this book. The suspense had me hooked from the beginning and kept me guessing to the end. The chemistry between Lizzie and Ethan was steamy while the suspense had me on the edge wondering what was going to happen next. The characters are well written and I’m looking forward to the next book in the series. I highly recommend this book.
