Samantha Moon and Kingsley Fulcrum set their sites on a romantic weekend getaway to Big Bear, California, only to find themselves on the hunt for a runaway boy. With darkness descending and the temperature dropping—and one little boy alone in the wilderness—Samantha Moon decides to call in the cavalry. Or, as Jim Knighthorse likes to say, the "big guns." Now with Spinoza, Aaron King, Detective Sherbet, Allison, and, of course, Knighthorse joining the search, Samantha Moon will put her weekend of romance on hold to find the missing boy...no matter the costs.
J.R. Rain is the author of 110 novels and counting. He lives on an island in the Pacific Northwest, where he's hard at work on his next novel... and fighting off sparkly vampires.
A nice short story that reminded me of some of the earlier Samantha Moon stories before everything went over-the-top and the books devolved into comics.
Another short yet sweet Samantha Moon story. I really enjoyed the different direction this one headed in. No chasing mad guys or fighting monsters, just looking for a little lost explorer.
(I received an ARC in exchange for my honest review)
Yes!! This was a short one to but a great one! A missing and Samantha and kingsley being the last to see the boy headed in the woods! So much for a romantic getaway for the 2 lol turns out super great tho
I loved the depiction of this little boy who is an original himself. He is the type that will do great things. But the most fun in this story is seeing the wolf and boy frolicking together.
Now that was a great short story! Just long enough to capture the imagination and have fun with it. Thanks Mr Rain, this was what I have been looking for.
Another 5 star story. Thank you very much Mr. Rain. J.R.'s descriptive prose has matured tremendously. The raw potential has always been there with interesting characters, an original twist on an exhausted topic, laugh out loud humor and a complex story line that keeps you eagerly turning the pages. Descriptive prose was sometimes lacking in his earlier work, (please fangirls don't put a hit out me, I said *sometimes*) but that certainly isn't the case here. I could almost smell the forest, and feel the biting cold through his imagery. Mr. Rain his honing his writing skills very nicely. Several characters from his other books make a cameo. You don't necessarily need to read them, because the author gives enough background without overdoing it. Though I do highly recommend them, especially the ones with (Johnny Bravo and Deadpools love child) Jim Knighthorse. Authors interweaving their various characters and worlds into a solid universe is one of my favorite reading experiences. It amazes me how they can keep all of their facts straight! It seems a short story always follows one of the Moon novels. They mostly have important information that doesn't seem to fit into Mr. Rains already complex story. (Sam is a very busy lady. Saving the world, raising her children, self discovery, trying to enjoy "magic time" with the hunky Kingsley)Lucky for her she has a man who accepts and loves her for who she is. This short story is a perfect example as to why Sam isn't succumbing to the inner demon like her vampire peers. She is too strong willed, and it seems her base nature is to protect the innocent. Though she battles her inner demon daily, I suspect, in the end this strength of character will keep her from losing her humanity.
A romantic lakeside getaway for Samantha Moon and her boy toy wolfie, Kingsley. What more could an overworked vampire mom ask for? No kids, no supernatural, no work, no worries. Oh, who are they kidding! Sam’s life will never be that easy or boring. On the drive up, Sam spots a little tyke headed into the woods, obviously on his own. She and Kingsley try and talk it off, but finally end up involved in a woodland search for a little boy lost on his own in the cold, dangerous outdoors. With so much land to cover, they call in help from all my favorite JR Rain characters, which just makes me grin and giggle away. Nothing better than having all my faves in one spot, picturing them all helping one another in their own unique way, with their own unique personalities. (Gave me flashbacks to my childhood and my love of Saturday morning Laugh-a-Lymphics cartoons, but, hey, I digress, hehe!) With all these awesome private detectives, psychics, and police detectives, there’s no way there won’t be a happy ending. There’s nothing like reading a Vampire for Hire book by JR Rain to make my day and this is just a little charmer for Valentine’s Day; nothing heavy-- just lots of fun.
Moon Love, Vampire for Hire 11.5 (short story) J.R. Rain
I'm a fan of anything Samantha Moon oriented and this was not an exception. As I assume were most readers, I was prepared for Rain's Valentine short story to be a romantic interlude between Sam and her hairy SO, Kingsley. It certainly started out looking that way, but then it took a drastic and wonderful turn, becoming a story not of physical love or sappy emotions, but of digging into the soul of what makes beings remarkable.
Loved that, even if just in mentioning them, Rain brought some of our favorite characters from other series into the mix: Allison, Jim Knighthorse, Aaron King, Detective Sherbet, Detective Sanchez, and Spinoza I recognized; Monty and Ellen Drew must be from a series I haven't yet sampled! Although these characters were more window dressing that integral to the storyline, it was still wonderful to see (virtually) them all together in one place.
Kudos to Rain on a lovely Valentine's gift to his readers.
Short story with Kingsley taking Sam on a magical Valentine’s weekend at Big Bear Lake. Of course she can’t go anywhere without a mystery popping up. When it does their weekend for two gets crowded.
The little boy is so adorable, but he must have had adventures before so I can’t believe his parents weren't aware that he might do something like this.
Quick Thoughts: 1) I would have given this 5 stars except the ending was a little abrupt for me. And I wish the two could have gotten some private time.
Fave Scenes: 1) ‘Who goes there’, lighting the fire and wagging tails.
Absolutely worth every penny ! I have gotten accustomed to these little side branches to the Samantha Moon ever-growing tree, but I must say out of all of them so far, I like this one the best ! It has been a true pleasure reading this whole series...if you are not a Samantha Moon fan, please do yourself a favor and grab one of the boxed sets, and let yourself get addicted, too ! Definitely entertaining...had not been one book yet that I have had an easy time putting down once I got started ! Thanks, again, JR for a fabulous series !!
Again the short stories are not my favorite but this one was better than the others. This one brought all the Charlie Brown crew up to help find a small boy. I was hoping this was a point for the next big step for the wolfman and his vampire. Guess I will have to keep reading once the other books are done.
I've always loved Samantha Moons stories. This novella just reinforces that love. Sam is such a mom with all the anxieties, but with a little extra power to do something about it.
This is a very short story that's supposed to be a romantic getaway for Samantha and Kingsley but turns into a missing child case. I like the series and the stories that accompany it but I wanted more romance feels!
This short story was a quick, fun read. All the characters from Rain's books get together and help Samantha find a lost boy. It brought tears to my eyes, but also caused the hairs on my arms raise up. Very cool.
I always like the the wisdom he weaves in his stories. This was an enjoyable gem. His books are easy to enjoy, but always have something to learn in them that makes you think more, or describes what you think, but haven't been able to word yourself.
