Picked this up after attending a seminar that discussed this book. Found it to be too filled with stereotypes especially relating to men and women’s behaviors and interactions. Perhaps my age group was not the intended audience but I didn’t find that it spoke to my personal experiences or views in the way that book is intended.
Finding [My} Moxie is truly a challenge for me in some ways. I enjoyed this book because it was motivational and it described me in so many ways. Debra hit the hammer on the nail many times in this book and provided a different way of looking at phrases I have heard all my life. She has in many ways described me trying not to hurt others feelings while continuously being hurt. I differently need to Grab my moxie. I need to practice using my moxie on a day to day bases. I did use it somewhat recently I was in a car getting a ride carpooling with a stranger. This stranger had the music blasting with the base. It was bothering me but I didn't say anything until I thought about this book recommendation and I found my moxie and simply just asked if the driver could please turn down the music. The driver immediately said sure and stated that it must be the base that is bothering you. While this may not be a major example I think it's a step in the right direction. At first I was thinking I don't want to say anything because I don't want conflict. Just as Debra stated but I found the moxie and simply just asked and it worked out. While I realize I may not be as brave and outspoken as Debra (I typically won't say the mean thing that may come to my mind) I can work on telling the individuals my thoughts in a timely manner. I would put this book in my reference library if I had a library :) So thanks again Debra and I want to revisit this book again when I need to grab my moxie which will be very often :D
This is intended to be a practical booster for women in their lives and careers. I can't say that anything in it was completely new to me but the tone and presentation were in a very no-nonsense, "poop or get off the pot" style that reminded me of my aunt. Sometimes we don't need to hear something new, but have it presented in a tone that lets us hear it a new way. There were several spots that I couldn't help but underline. I liked her short "Moxie Minutes" scattered throughout the pages and her action points at the end of each chapter.
One point that particularly grabbed me was "We are the average sum of the five people we hang out with most...financially, spiritually, physically, professionally, recreationally." I don't think I'd thought about this idea in quite this way prior to her statement. You may want to argue this point but I think it is valid point, our friends influence us in every respect. When we encourage them, they encourage us. Its a lot more common to pick up a new hobby or even check out a link that a friend suggests to us than from someone who has no influence/weight in our lives. She followed with a quote from Napoleon Hill, "Deliberately seek the company of people who influence you to think and act on building the life you desire."
I tend to reserve five stars for books that I've caught myself telling others about while reading them or those that I finish and want to read all over again. That said, I think many women would be encouraged and energized from reading this book. It was worth the time and is a quick read.
I appreciate Fox's straightforward approach with this book. This would be 5 stars except for a few things that rankled me as I read. She makes a point a lot of times about how women interact with other women in the workplace (or that they don't) but doesn't touch on working with men in the workplace. The assumption too that all women avoid talking about these problems and interactions to the person they're targeting but speak to everyone else about the problem didn't ring true to me.
My other annoyance is her endorsements of MLMs. NOPE. Not even once.
Other than that I really did get a lot of reinforcement of my own burgeoning Moxie skills. It's a good starter if you need help getting in touch with your give no fucks senses.
If you need a little pick-me-up and enjoy reading self-help books, this is a good one to read mainly because it is short and to the point. I appreciated the author's authentic tone and no nonsense approach!
I would count it more as 3.5 stars. There are some interesting points that I will need to revisit. It’s certainly easy to read and catchy. She does write in cliche and reference her time as a pageant participant and as a coach a LOT...
A great book to help you find "your moxie" whatever that may be. So many choices of what you want your Moxie to be. Open your imagination as it and you can be whatever you desire
