Contrary to what many people think - Luis Suarez comes off as a person with a clean heart who faced a lot of hardships in his early years. Also, his love-story with his now wife Sofi and all the efforts he took to be close to her is all very endearing.
One thing stands out is his desire to win. He himself sums it up saying "Its not that I want to win, I need to win". He is one person who always gives his 100% on the pitch no matter what - something we all can learn from him. And yes he does overstep the line sometimes in his desire to win - something which is summed up in the title "Crossing The Line".
I started liking Luis Suarez at one of the most controversial moments of his career - when he stopped a certain goal while playing for his country, Uruguay in the quarter finals of the world cup 2010.
It's obvious to his fans that he is an instinctive player. But it's nice to get inside the head of a footballer. It's always better to know the background of your favourite player. The book explains his upbringing in Uruguay, his struggles, his hunger to play and win, his relationship with his girlfriend and now wife, Sofie. It also explains how differently football is played across different countries in Europe.
This book tells his side of the story for all the controversies surrounding him. Some of his explanations sound plausible and some fall flat. It's hard to explain the biting incidents. When you are angry you can throw a punch, you may kick the person or you can do a head-butt, but biting anyone cannot be rationalised. Stopping the ball with your hand can be an instinctive action. But the most controversial of all the controversies was the racist charge against him. It will never be clear what words were exchanged between Patrice Evra and Luis Suarez, but I don't think that Suarez is a racist. I have seen that video many times and of the later hand-shake incident as well. Its Evra who looks more dominating during the argument and in body language. Add to that the clout of Manchester United in the Premiere League, which was very influential in getting a long ban on Suarez.
Suarez has flaws. He has been through a lot of controversies. And he has been come back strongly after each of them. This shows his character. You fall and you rise again. His first season at Barcelona was phenomenal. And I hope it continues....
um not even really a soccer fan and I loved the book. The book showed that he is more then a soccer player. it's a great read for someone getting in to soccer.
have just finished it and already regretting that there are no more pages to read about this amazing man. a man who has struggled all his life to arrive where he is today. for sure he didn't have an easy life and had to work hard. am so glad that I never judged him in any way and feel so lucky that for 2 and a half seasons he was our no. 7. such a humble and honest man whom unfortunately the English media always pointed it's finger towards him and made his life anything but easy while living in England. he admits that he has done his share but what attracked me most in his book, is the way he continues to fight till his last breath to clean up his name that no he is against all odds against Racism. hope that apart his biography the truth will come out one day and the world will ask forgiveness for the way it treated him. YNWA Luis.

YNWA
This book gives very minute details about life of Luis Suarez and his soaring career. Even though he was born in a destitute family, it did not stop him from being one of the greatest footballer in his position. Luis Suarez heartily shares his life by doing post-mortem of his journey from playing street football at hometown to being Uruguay's international.
I think Suárez has written this book to accept his each and every wrong deeds as well as to defend the false accusation against him. More than that, he has written this book to throw out negatively which i think is the part of therapy he has attended to a psychologist after biting Italia defender Chiellini. Moments before the Chiellini bite, he had a great chance to put Uruguay 1-0 up. If he had scored that goal, if Buffon hadn’t made the save, then what followed would never have happened. He would not have done anything. Nothing. But he missed the chance. The pressure builded, the fear and the anger bubbled up inside: ‘We’re going out here, and we’re going out because of me.’ He didn’t realise the magnitude of what he was doing or what he might do.
In this book, he is actually trying to explain it to himself, to understand what happens and why.
Being a Liverpool fan, I already admire him a lot. And after reading this book, I developed more respect towards him. I have found these things impressive and striking in his books:- • By comparing the kids football school of Uruguay and Holland, Suarez says that - Kids in Holland work with the ball the whole time. But the first thing football school for kids in Uruguay do is send them out running for three laps around the pitch and when they’ve finished maybe throw them one ball between the lot of them. This is why, high proportion of players in Holland have excellent technique compared to Uruguay. • Make your desire to win contagious, spreading throughout the team and infecting all the others. • He has defended referees and their wrong decisions in this book calling the job of referees to be most difficult job ever. Being in the right position every time, taking the abuse, making instant decision and being under constant pressure; if a player can make mistakes, referee will make it too. Above all, they too are football fans. • When you’re away from home, you miss the good things and you forget the bad ones. • About the save he made against Ghana in 2010 FIFA World Cup quarterfinal, a paper in South Africa that called it the ‘Hand of the Devil’ and ran a picture of Suárez with horns; this is where he states that "what I did was bad but not bad as compared to goal scored with hand by Diego Maradona in 1986. I had prevented a goal and I paid for it." • Suárez explains why his save against Ghana in 2010 World Cup holded a grudge: In 1/1000 th of a second, pretty much every player in the world on the line keeps the ball out with his hand because it’s the automatic reaction. He gets sent off, a penalty is given and that is the end of it. But it was the World Cup in South Africa who were already knocked out and the host country was supporting Ghana, Africa’s only representative still in the competition. That made it seem worse to people. • You'll feel sorry for Luis because he has been honest about everything in this book. Being honest as much as possible, Suárez has even spoken about his incident with Patrice Evra. Luis has no problem on calling him ‘big-mouth’, ‘biter’ or ‘diver’ as there's a proof. But accusing him as a RACIST hurts him a lot. This is the stain that slurred on his name that no one can take away. • He has even talked about family issues of normal people. In a big family, there is always someone with a problem, but most family issues cannot be solved by money. You have the money and you still have the problem or you solve the problem for them and then they come back with their uncle and their uncle’s brother who also has a problem. So, even if you are filthy rich, you should be tight fisted and help those people only who are willing to appreciate and value what they have. • There are hilarious incidents regarding his time at Liverpool: 1. One is about the water which he says he drinks more than 5 litres a day. "During the game, you forget about everything but afterwards it hits me and I am in and out of the toilet constantly. I’ll meet my wife afterwards and almost as soon as I’m there with her, it will be: ‘Hang on, I’ve just got to go the toilet.’ Then twenty minutes later it’s: ‘Won’t be a minute, I’m just going to the toilet.’ It drives Sofi mad and my team-mates are always laughing at me– if we’re on the bus or catching a flight, I’m always dashing off. They’re looking at me, thinking: ‘What? Again?’ 😂 2. Another is when Suárez scored a second goal against England at 2014 FIFA World Cup and Suárez's wife sofi celebrated the goal. At that time their daughter Delfina, who’d spent the season watching Jordan, Glen, Raheem, Daniel and Stevie, had turned to her and said: ‘Why are you happy that Liverpool are losing, Mummy?’ 😂 • Through this book, Suárez has tried to express why the England national football team is not getting any trophies. He don't claim to have answer of this but insists that it's not due to the lack of resources but the reason lie elsewhere: 1. He believes that English football is affected by the lack of a winter break. The Christmas and New Year programme is special but to have a fifteen-or twenty-day break after that in January so that players can stop both physically and mentally could have enormous benefits. Instead, there’s an extra cup competition squeezed into the fixture list in England. 2. "It's not just the number of games in England, it is the intensity of each game. If you compare the intensity of the Bundesliga, La Liga and the Premier League, you can see that the English league’s harder. The players who come from abroad notice the intensity even more. That lies at the root of the problem for English teams in Europe. You see this not just with the national team but with the Champions League too." • It's hard to cope with a new people in new place and it becomes more difficult when you don't know their language. But Suárez successfully learned Dutch language when he played for Ajax. Meanwhile he learned some English during his time at Liverpool. But the funny thing is Suárez rote learned some English words just to tell it after a match when reporters asked. It was always-"The most important thing is the three points' ... 'We knew this would be a hard game and we have been working towards it all week' ... 'We're happy, but now we have to concentrate on the next game." 😂 • He has mentioned about his earlier managers and coaches and said that the job of managers is hard too. He has made his mind for not being managers in the future but if some of his friend becomes a coach and wants him as assistant, then he may think about it... • Finally about the biting incident with Giorgio Chiellini, he accepts to have done it but the behaviour of FIFA towards him was worse than a criminal. He has raised some questions on this topic to which I support. Some are - 1. "The nine-game ban was to be expected. But being sent home and banned from all stadiums?" 2. Banning him from playing for Liverpool when his bans in England never prevented him from playing for Uruguay? 3. Banning Suárez from going to watch his nine-and ten-year-old nephews play a game of Baby Football? 4. Banning him from all stadiums worldwide? 5. Stopping him from even jogging around the perimeter of a football pitch? 6. FIFA had never banned a player for breaking someone’s leg, or smashing someone’s nose across his face. These incidents are dangerous than biting.
In terms of quality of book, the book can be rated just above average but his life is always of 5 out of 5 stars.
Sid Lowe involved in writing this I guess. Easy to read for non-native english speaker. The story is good, yeah just good.
I found Zlatan's is better than Suarez'. Because I Am Zlatan is very good, I believe it influenced the opening of this book. It's similar.
Suarez story is a love-driven one. Had it not for Sofi, perhaps Suarez will only play in Uruguay, unable to made a move to europe let alone winning it's biggest tournament, the UCL.
So light, I can even finish reading this in less than a week. Worth to read, but not collecting one is fine I suppose.
The book was a very interesting read into the minds of one of the world's best forwards detailing his story from small towns in Uruguay to the Camp Nou.
There are some very well written emotional chapters in this book about the tears after Crystal Palace, the bitings and then incident with Evra.
The real gems are the sections on his interactions with his managers (Martin Jol, Rodgers, van Basten), his teammates (Glen Johnson!) and one piece on EPL referees!
Of miklar nákvæmnislýsingar á einstaka leikjum.
From reading this book I learnt about how difficult it is growing up in a poor family can be and the challenges that someone can suffer when being born into poverty,“When I was a kid, I had to fight for everything”, this quote from Suarez describes the challenges he faced when trying to go professional in football. For example when beginning to play, he had to play in bare feet because he could not afford boots. This makes you understand that Suarez did not have his career and talent handed to him on a silver platter, he had to fight for it and not give up, unlike some other football players who were born into academies and richer nations. It is important to understand this as it played a big part in how his personality ended up. We need to learn this so that we understand how hard it can be in countries that have a different culture and lifestyle. These challenges can change how a person turns out and how they live their life. For instance, South Americas culture uses the word ‘negro’ as a normal word, however when Suarez moved to Europe he encountered the challenge of it being frowned upon, and being labelled as a ‘racist’. This destroys his image and is a problem he struggles with for a very long time. These parts of his childhood changed how he was perceived as a player at the top level, he was viewed as a rough, racist person and not a nice person. His story shows that even with the challenges you come across in your life, you can still make it if you try hard enough and stick at it.
I have enjoyed reading sporting autobiographies and this one is no different. I always liked Suarez as a player. I gave his all as a Liverpool player and the fact that he loved the club comes out in this book.
He does not talk about why he left Liverpool, and I wish he could have stayed another year.
It was interesting but not the best autobiography I have read. I can't always identify with him, we are from way to different backgrounds. The fact that English is not his first language may not have helped this book.
I would have given him 3.5* but couldn't so I wil give it the benefit of the doubt!
I must have wondered hundreds of times over the years - What must be going on inside his head? Fans and pundits have accepted that Every genius has a touch of madness, but this is a bit too much. Here is a world class player who is capable of terrorizing and destroying the best defense in the world - yet he will be remembered in the history as a racist who has bitten footballers on the field - THRICE!!! Through all the ups and downs, and amidst the trophies, awards and humiliating bans, you get a glimpse into what makes him tick. The insatiable hunger and the undying spirit just stand out!
Good book. Nice insight into his mind and how his upbringing and attitude towards life and football is. I've never read a football biography but this was definitely one which was interesting. Nice to see the whole competitive size and how it is to be an athlete. Of course he addresses his controversies and explains his mistakes but at the same time, nice to see who the real person behind the player is. Nice read and recommend it for those who are fan of Suarez or football. Definitely in my opinion one of the most talented players out there.
El pistolero buat saya sosok pembeda di Liverpool. Kostum bernomor 7 Liverbird beneran menjadi sakti waktu dipakainya. Soal skill jangan ditanya, sewaktu berkostum Liverpool ga pernah absen nonton.
Overall this is a good read, not only as a Liverpool or Suarez fan but also as a football fan. The one thing that i like about Suarez is his strong will to do anything to achieve his goals. Of course during the process, he made mistakes and even let people down but to me, that’s natural. We also make mistakes all the time and the important thing is how we get back on track to try to reach our goals. That’s how we survive and progress.
It's rare to find an autobiography that strikes the perfect balance between detailing one's story ab initio and getting too long-drawn and borderline boring. Suárez does it perfectly, and his own, human side of things that global media freely makes mincemeat of, is on the platter. A beautiful book on an interesting, quite inspiring life.
I love his ambition and commitment to football. I wasn’t too thrilled about his behaviour at times but I really liked this book because it gives you a lot more to do with why he does things and how he has worked so hard to be one of the best football players ever. I was sad to see him leave Liverpool but I still enjoy watching him at Barcelona.
Do-do-do-do-do-do-do Do-do-do-do-do-do-do Do-do-do-do-do-do-do Luis Suarez! His name is Suarez, he wears the famous Red I just can't get enough, I just can't get enough When he scores a volley or when he scores a head I just cant get enough, I just can't get enough He scores a goal and the Kop go wild And I just can't seem to get enough Suarez
It was an excellent read overall. I never really had a strong opinion about Suárez and it was mostly what I saw in the media that influenced me a bit. A quite refreshing read coming from the man himself.
Not an Uruguayan, not a Liverpool or Ajax fan, but Suarez is one of the best of his time. Good story, a few aspects that I didn't know about him. Really enjoyed the book.
