* This is the second book in the Stark Springs Academy series, which should be read in order. You should read Black Diamond before reading the description below. *
If you don’t like the rules, make new ones.
If you want to the best, show no fear.
And if Ryker Black is your boyfriend, you better be ready to fight. On and off the slopes.
Overnight, Roxie Slade went from an outsider at Stark Springs Academy, to a ruler at the prestigious boarding school for elite winter athletes. But Roxie didn’t know if she wanted that power, and she definitely wasn’t sure about sharing it with Ryker Black, who came from a different world and lived by a different set of morals. Ryker may have decided to trust her, but could she trust him?
Roxie only cared about her rising position in the ski rankings, but now her status at Stark and within the winter sports community is skyrocketing, whether she asked for it or not. Can she handle both while attempting a real relationship with Ryker Black?
Roxie once believed that her sole purpose was proving herself on the slopes, but she’s done that once, and she’s far from satisfied. She has so much more to prove.
Ali is a USA Today Bestselling author of sports romance. She has always loved to read, especially when there's a happily ever after, but found that there weren't enough books out there featuring girl athletes. So, she decided to work on that. Like the heroines in her books, Ali is an athlete, with running and skiing her favorite sports these days. Ali hails from Vermont and now lives in her own happily-ever-after in Colorado with her husband, two sets of twins, and golden retriever Pancake. When she's not pursuing an outdoor adventure, Ali's less healthy passions include ice cream, coffee, and beer.

Oh la la... I never thought i d get so excited while reading a YA sport angsty drama without any sex in it, obviously LOL
But it just so happens that this author not only presents the story fluently, and easy flowing, she also steps up a notch in developing the characters as just slightly mature than they d be for their age... which gives the plot further credibility, even though that same "age" issue had set me back in book 1.
In this case, for me that fact worked perfectly as i could get involved in the storyline more as it s full of dramatic, angsty, detailed sport action movements filled with danger, suspense and anticipation through out the course of it, while we follow the rise of an upcoming talented ski racer Roxie Slade and a wide range of change in posture and conduct of Ryker Black who is not only taking another turn in his life and his life goals but his relationship with Roxie makes him more open trustworthy and even vulnerable...
They both need to take one step closer to their bonding as it's not even based on physicality which makes them exceptionaly mature...
But One person from the ex-posse will make life terrible for Roxie and she'll be in danger...but the determination and spirit of this young athlete will only set her mind towards more...being more...developing and learning along the way...the she can win in all...
But then the dice roll and the shocking news leaves them stunned in the very end of the story..
It is essential to read Book 1 in this series before reading this novel
Seventeen-year-old junior, Roxie Slade, has officially become the girlfriend of gorgeous, 18-year-old senior, Ryker Black, and she now knows exactly why he is the de facto king of Stark Springs Academy. Not only that, she is now apparently Ryker’s consort, and she finds herself holding all sorts of social power that she never wanted—though she does her best to use that power in positive ways, rather than destructive ones. Meanwhile, her training and focus are giving her the means to skyrocket to the top in the prestigious skiing competitions in Europe that attending SSA allows her to participate in, all expenses paid. But someone—or possibly more than one person—wishes her harm. Very likely because they are jealous of her success, and even more likely because they envy her relationship with Ryker.
This is the second novel in a three-book series that is written—as is typical for YA novels—entirely in the first-person point of view of Roxie. In order to enjoy the complete arc of Roxie’s adventures, it is crucial to read all three books, in order.
The main plot of this novel continues to center on Roxie as a champion ski racer, but there is also strong focus on her romance with sexy Ryker, and an expansion of the ongoing suspense subplot, which is not fully resolved until Book 3.
Reread 8/6/25: I own this book and the entire trilogy in Kindle and audiobook format. I enjoyed the series just as much the second time as the first. Please see my review of the box set for my overall impression of this series.
I never imagined a high school so filled with drama.
In this second book of the series, we see Roxie taking charge and becoming the new 'leader' of Stark (even if it was a power she did not ask for) but, as she gains power and the ability to change the previous rules, the high school becomes a place without borders. People can do whatever, meet and sit with whomever and stop worrying about the posse and power authorities. Roxie made a really good change in Stark Academy and everyone loved her for it. Except for the princesses, as she called them. After the incident in the first book, where Aspen, Winter, and Petra do something terrible to Roxie. They are immediately done at school. The former posse starts seeing them for at they are, and they are ignored by everyone. The relationship between Ryker and Roxie in this book develops for something public (and international) in the blink of an eye. Roxie is taken aback by the sudden change in her world and the secret Ryker is hiding makes it all much more difficult. After an accident at the last race, Roxie goes back home to her parents and to decide what she'll do next.
This book was better than the first one. We see more of Ryker and more of Roxie's strength and fire to race. And the end? Oh my God! I can't wait to start the third and last book of this series. Again, I read this book in one sitting because I could not put it down without knowing. I knew something was going to happen and I couldn't wait to know. Ali did not disappoint. The accident gave some closure and it helped their relationship. It was cute seeing Ryker take care of her and how he cares for her. But, that end really shocked me... I did not expect that. At all.
"(...) This is the right choice, and I needed a reason to make it. You're that reason. That's all."
I am enjoying this series about Ryker and Roxie. In this book, Roxie and Ryker are a couple and it is skiing competition time. I thought this book was filled with plenty of drama with the competitions and also in their developing relationship. I enjoyed watching Ryker open up to Roxie and how she handled everything. Looking forward to book three.
3-1/2 stars. After the intense, angsty beginning to this series in Black Diamond, the sequel didn't quite live up to my expectations. There is some conflict between Ryker and Roxie, but it centered more on the secrets that Ryker is keeping. Secrets that put distance between them, but not a lot of drama. These secrets aren't revealed until the final chapter, but I never felt like they were building to a boiling point and if they weren't released, an explosion would occur. There's also a lack of competitive skiing that really drove more of the first book. There's time spent traveling to and hanging out at various competitive ski locales, but not nearly as much time training for or competing in these events.
Plot The plot primarily centers around Ryker and Roxie's relationship. They're moving closer, but the secret keeps a wedge between them. There is some competitive skiing, but not as much as I would have liked, and it's not a major part of the plot.
Characters The characters are further developed in this second installment. We learn more about what makes Ryker tick, but not until late in the story. It does explain a lot about him, but I felt like maybe we could have had some of the secrets spread out more through the story, to keep the plot moving.
What Didn't Work for Me 1. The pacing. It was a lot slower than the first book, and therefore, it took me quite a bit longer to get through it. 2. Not enough skiing. I would have liked more of the competitive skiing, had it be more of the main plot similar to the Pepper Jones series.
What I Enjoyed About Double Black 1. The ending. Never saw that coming and it was so surprising, it really redeemed the book for me. 2. The settings. The author does a wonderful job of painting colorful pictures of her settings. 3. Ryker and Roxie. Although they need to learn to communicate better, I'm still pulling for them and can't wait to see what happens in the final book in the series. 4. Twists. There were a couple of twists I didn't see coming. I always love when an author can really surprise me. 5. Roxie's family. We finally get to spend some time with Roxie's family back east and it helps shape her more fully, seeing the well-rounded loving parents she grew up with.
Bottom Line Double Black is is missing some of the angst-ridden romance of its predecessor, but it's still a good read.
This is the second book from the Stark Spring Academy series that continues the story of Roxie and Ryker.
Roxie and Ryker are now together. And with that she's no longer an outcast and she has a new status at the academy.
But Roxie doesn't want that. She just want to practice and win the competitions.
However, Ryker is hiding things and this secrets are keeping them distant and are damaging their relationship.
This book was amazing. I loved to see Roxie and how much she grew during the competitions. Also, we learn more about Ryker and with that we understand more about his character.
i want to rate this four stars but can’t bring myself to because of many reasons (of which i have probably forgotten because i’m writing this review the following day but that’s besides the point). it simply wasn’t four star material for some reason… and to be honest i kinda like giving books lower ratings which sounds crazy, yes i know 🥲.
ryker is definitely so much better in this book. i looked up snowboarding vids on youtube and dude, if roxie wasn’t a skier herself then i would’ve been like ‘how the hell does she handle that’. it looks SO scary 😭. but it adds to his persona so much even though in this book there for sure was more of him loosening up and saying things.
speaking of saying things, i’m so shocked at the revelation towards the end. like dude, you’ve got to be kidding me right?? i was totally not seeing that coming 💀. i think it adds to the mystery and aura of the story though, cause cmon, it’s not one murder, but TWO. and you’re like, ‘dang, they’ve got enough drama to last a lifetime at the tiny age of eighteen’.
i was so sad with what happened to roxie and so pissed at petra. like bro, what if there was a worse outcome? and everyone isn’t as scared about it as i thought. not only did she leave her stranded but she hurt her REALLY bad. mental pain does not go away, but physical pain hurts like hell 😀. besides the drama, i felt like the romance was getting kinda toxic. i don’t know, it just felt like, bad, i guess. more icky, like dread. and even though it’s going a lot better in the third book, i can just tell something else is gonna happen and i’m not ready for it 😛.
anyway this was a great book. you can’t really put it down even if you tried. i love addicting books 😙. but i feel like it’s starting to get tiresome to read things that actually take brains so i really just want something fluffy and easy so maybe right after the third book i’ll pick up something lighter 😁.
I love Ali Dean’s sports romances. It’s been that way since I read the first in her Pepper Jones series and walked away totally addicted both to the romance and the feeling of really being an insider on the sport (cross country in that case). That’s probably why I glommed on Black Diamond when I saw it. If anything this book was even better than the Pepper Jones books (a very high bar as those books are so superb that I’ve re-read that series several times). So much so that I’ve addictively binge read through Double Black and Black Ice too. Why? Because not only do we once again get so far into the head of a top athlete as to really feel like an insider in the sport itself, in this case skiing, but we also get high business intrigue and a real thriller of a suspense. Roxie and Ryker’s romance in Stark Springs Academy series is also simply beautifully done. The series has reached a logical stopping point at book 3, but I’m not going to call it a trilogy as I’m hoping for more (hey, there’s precedent here: the Pepper Jones stories reached logical stopping points at times but the author still found ways to continue the series with new novels that worked beautifully). But for the fact that I’m literally dictating this review to my husband from my hospital bed I could go on and on with praises - each of the books in this series definitely deserves it. Since I can’t do that I will simply note that this series is most definitely one to read, and it is easy to highly recommend each book.
This is book 2 in the Stark Springs Academy series.
Quite a bit has happened and Roxie isn't sure how she feels or what she really wants to do but one thing she does know is she isn't going to let anyone push her around or scare her off.
She is determined to stand up for herself and make a change but then things start to get serious. Sabotage is no joke and lives are at stake. Things with Ryker are unsteady but she doesn't know what she wants to do, run home with her tail between her legs and accept defeat or keep fighting and return to Stark Springs. Vermont doesn't really feel like home anymore now that she has started a life at Stark Springs and has made friends there but she misses her friends back home.. What's a girl to do?
I was thoroughly enraptured by this book. When things inevitably went south I couldn't put it down, I had to know how it all played out. I loved the push and pull and the frustration of it all. This is a sweet young adult series without any NSFW stuff going on and it was refreshing, made me feel like I was a young girl experiencing the flutters and frustrations with a new boy and the sweet and innocent make out sessions that were fun and flirty. Roxie is strong and inspiring, she doesn't let it get to her, well not really.. she wipes the dirt off and keeps moving forward.
But can we talk about that cliffhanger? Like what the what?! UGH! How? Why? Again... What? I didn't believe it.. I went back again and again thinking no.. no way.. yep that is definitely what he said..
I am totally invested in this series! Ali Dean knows how to capture my attention and invest my heart and soul into a story. This second book in her Stark Springs Academy series is incredible. We continue on as Roxie and Ryker's relationship is heating up. Roxie is learning quickly how influential Ryker is, As things progress, he transfers his "power" to her, and she is trying to decide if this is what she wants. Ryker is also looking to his future and decisions are being made. Are they in his best interest? Are they in Stark's best interest? How does Roxie influence it all? As the layers of classes begin to meld at the academy, there is fall out too. What cost is there to the changes? So much is happening, plus the growing relationships of friends, Ryker and Roxie and the school. It's intense at times, it's mean girls catty, it's high school politics, first loves and high stakes business. I love it!!! And the cliffhanger is shocking!!! I can't wait to see where Ali takes us next in the next installment of the series.
Leanne Woodward gives an amazing performance as things heat up. She is fantastic with her voices and keeps consistency between books so it's easy to know who is speaking. Her ability to keep the suspense moving and the love flowing with her voice is wonderful. Looking forward to her next performance of the Stark Springs Academy characters!
Things have changed for Roxie. She is no longer an outcast. She could be part of the select group at the Academy, but she doesn't want to. She doesn't want that group to exist anymore. She wants the differences to end, the strict rules. She wants to see where her relationship with Ryker leads. And she wants to do well in championships.
I love their relationship, how they take things slowly (not always). I love that they discover more about each other. I love that they miss each other. And I don't like that they hide things to each other. They both do it to protect the other, but they don't feel good. It hurts not to be honest, and they do not know how to do it. Roxie suffers for the distance between them, and she does not know how to break it.
I love that people are no longer so... Closed? Distant. The barriers have been broken, they can approach whoever they want, be with whoever they want. But it's not that easy to change things.
Roxie grows during the Championship, she forgets her fears. She learns to fly. She leaves behind her insecurities, but not all of them.
I love Ingrid.
And I didn't expect the big secret.
I received an ARC from the author, and this is my honest review.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
You will need to read Black Diamond to follow these two. Roxie and Ryker Black have an agreement and they will date and see where it goes. With her hanging out with Ryker, this has upped her status at Stark Springs Academy. But all Roxie wants is to ski her best and rock the skiing world. She has already won one competition but that just makes her want more. Plus Roxie is making changes (for the best) to not have a the clique and to be accepted by all. But enter the mystery of business and certain adult couples into the fray and this book just shoots right up there! Plus Ryker's secret and his decision causes even more problems. Then there are some wicked girls who take matters into their own hands. But then a death occurs so how will this affect all of these students at Start Springs Academy? These books just keep getting better and better. Definitely recommend this series and am hoping later there will be a box set so I can binge read them all at once. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
received a copy of this ARC. We continue Roxie and Ryker story in this second book, so hold on tight things get really crazier than before. The rules have changed since Roxie took a stand and put her foot down, now Ryker sits back and lets her take the lead. Ryker and Roxie become more of a couple in this book. Not everyone in the Academy is happy with the new changes and issues arise. Desperation leads to some members doing unthinkable things. While others relish in the changes and unite. We get answers to Ryker's parents, Stark employees and even their friends. There are surprises after surprises as she travels through Europe. This book will heave you wanting more of these characters, as well as make you cry, laugh, scream and feel horribly bad for others. I loved the changes in Ryker and how Roxie has grown in this book. Her huge heart is inspiring and her determination, as well as her strength leave us rooting for her at each turn. I loved this series and can't wait to read book three. This book also ends in a cliffy that will shock you. It's a definite must read. LOVED IT!
>Book Review – Double Black >I am an independent reviewer. This book is the 2nd in the Stark Springs Academy series and ends in a cliffhanger. Roxie and Ryker are now in a relationship, but with their schedules, the relationship is long distance. The descriptions of Roxie’s activities competing in Europe are really interesting. There is a lot of down time between races and a lot of early bedtimes. Ryker is still jealous and controlling, but in a more loving way. >Roxie is actually a bit annoying as she is constantly second guessing whether Ryker is good for her or not. There is a mystery involving the control of Stark, Inc. and an attempt upon Roxie’s life. Ryker’s secrets are also revealed, bringing Roxie and Ryker closer than ever. > This book is appropriate for a young adult (16+) audience. I am giving this book 5 stars. The relationship is really solid, but the mystery involving mean girl, Petra, ends in a cliffhanger.
I loved getting to pick up pretty much right where we left off from the last book. This is book 2 in the series and they do need to be read in order. I loved getting to see Roxie and Ryker together in this one. We get to see them building their relationship as they have to continue jumping through hurdles that try and cause them issues. I loved the way that they interacted together and built that layer of communication and trust that will see them through. Things might be moving quickly for them and getting deep fast but it works for them and what is going on. It doesn’t feel rushed or not genuine for them. While it doesn’t exactly leave on a cliffhanger a bomb is dropped at the end and I can’t wait to see where it takes us. The narrator did a good job with the story and I loved listening to it and having that added dynamic.
With the previous drama settled, I was hoping we would get to see some growth between Roxie and Ryker. And while we did see Ryker open up and share with Roxie, it still felt like there were still things holding them back.
They did grow closer, and I adored how he managed to surprise her. I think that was maybe my favourite part of the book. I also liked getting to see the developing relationships between the other characters. The budding friendships and trusted besties coming together.
But HELLO MEAN GIRL! I kind of saw it coming. And, then... the bomb. And just when I thought the drama was done... Um, what was that ending? Did I hear that correctly? Oh! What happened? I NEED ANSWERS. Look out book three, here I come!
Leanne, once again, did a fabulous job with the narration and accents.
I really enjoyed this story!!! I loved getting more of Ryker and Roxie together in this book. It’s the second book in the series and I do recommend reading the first book before this one. This one picks up pretty much the other one leaves off. It does leave us with a little bit of a cliffhanger. Nothing too bad but they definitely drop some news and then the books done. I’ve really enjoyed both the main characters and the secondary ones. They are fully developed and all add something to the story. I love seeing them grow throughout the story! I can’t wait to read the next one and see how everything ends up! Not sure I’m going to be ready to leave Stark Springs either. I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book.
Roxie and Ryker are adjusting to their new relationship and trying to balance the time they need to improve their sports with the time they want to spend together. By dating Ryker, Roxie has become part of upper social hierarchy at the school, but it is not a position she wants and she starts making changes so that it no longer exists.
Not everyone is happy that they are together and about the changes that are being made. If they are going to triumph over the obstacles that others are throwing in their way they must learn to trust and confide in each other. The narrator does a great job both with the escalating relationship between Roxie and Ryker and the intrigue component of the story. 🎧 Audiobook Obsession
The highlights of Black Diamond are explained in Double Black, but I don't think it's meant to be a stand alone. It's more of a refresher and best to read in order. The last minute of Double Black sets up for the third book in the series, but I wouldn't call it a cliffhanger (at least not a bad one). This book seemed more about emotional/relationship stuff, so I'm looking forward to the third book, which sounds like it might add a little more suspense.
I listened to the Audible version. Leanne Woodward did a great job with the narration and I would listen to more by her in the future.
Holy cliffhanger! I was not expecting that at ALL! What a way to leave a person hanging but thankfully the series is complete so I can move on to the last one, Black Ice. I am so excited!!! My reason for 4 (4.5 if I could) stars is because it wasn’t as exciting as the first, it was mostly Ryker & Roxie dealing with their relationship & all the new hurdles they’d have to overcome to stay together. Don’t get me wrong it had to happen & was still very entertaining & page turning but it fell a little flat for me after Black Diamond. None the less, I loved it & am so happy I can binge read this series!
I did read and review the first book in the Stark series. In my first review I expressed that the author is engaging and talented, even if I disliked the story. This book is different. The author slacks more throughout this book and sadly did better in the first one. Also, this story was worse. The entire book is about the insecurities of Roxanne, with a hint of drama towards the end. The author is trying her hand at a PG 13 version of FSG mixed with a high school romance. Epic Fail! Ridiculous material and I won't read the third book. I voluntarily reviewed this after receiving a free copy.
I was given an ‘Arc’ copy of this and book 1 in this triology and oh wow am I lucky I was This series aimed at more of a YA audience I feel is definitely a worthwhile read I found the storyline gripping with twists and turns leaving me wondering what was gonna happen next and I cannot wait to read the 3rd and final book in this series If you enjoy YA romances with a bit of suspense and unexpected surprises and revelations then this is the book series for you The characters were identifiable and easy to get too know making this for me an excellent read
This story continues around Stark academy ,the ski and snowboarding world. Ryker was livid when finds out what happened to Roxanne while he was away a few days. There's a power change at the academy between the Posse , Roxanne and Stryker. There's a lot going on in this book to keep up with. Roxanne feels he is holding back, but how can they go forward with a secret he is holding back? Theres plenty of jealousy, mystery, revenge, accidents, secrets revealed and changes at Stark Industry. Oh and an OMG cliffhanger. Leanne Woodward narration is very good. 🎧audiobookobsessionreviewer🎧
This whole last 3 hours of the audio book (about half way through the book) should just have to suspense sound in movies .... bum, bum, buumm!!
Roxie is having the best year of her life, between skiing and Ryker! But what happens when grudges are held? Not to mention the weird distance slowly growing between her and Ryker.
This story is so good, and has one if those progressions that keeps you from putting it down.
I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Addicted to the collection, absolutely love it. Each book just gets better and better every time I read a book from the collection. Wonderful characters that can be related to. These books you won't want to put down, you'll be hooked from the start, I enjoyed reading them. I'd recommend your books to anyone. Loaded up with a drink so I could cuddle up and read it. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Things at Stark Academy never cease to surprise me!
😳Wow! I thought the what went on at Stark Academy was crazy in book one but that had nothing on what these kids are getting up to in Double Black, book two of the series. 🤯Ali Dean has blown me away with this book and that ending had my jaw dropped to my chin and speechless. Talk about the unexpected! After this mind blowing addition to the series I’m kind of nervous and really excited to dive into book three to see how this story continues and how the series will end. On to Black Ice (book three) now. 📖
