The fourth book in the series. Rose Trevelyan is not concerned when her friend Etta does not turn up at the opening of her exhibition. When she hears the following day that a young man fell off a cliff in suspicious circumstances, Rose starts to makes connections and things start to go terribly wrong.
Born in Falmouth, Cornwall, Janie Bolitho enjoyed a variety of careers - psychiatric nurse, debt collector, working for a tour operator, a book-maker's clerk - before becoming a full time writer. She died of breast cancer in 2002.
Well....it took me a while to complete the whole book ( guess am a really 'sluggish' reader ) . . At the initial stages it gave me a 'series of thought process' like every other crime novels but the ending was somewhat 'bland' .... . . I usually like all kinds of writing styles as every writers are unique in their own way but this one lacked something in 'portraying' the overall content of the book . . Still a 'feel good book' like a 'feel good movie' . . Rating ⭐⭐ Mystery 10 % Feel good 20%
It's the 4th book in this cozy mystery series, set in Cornwall with Rose, a painter and photographer, with a tendency to get involved in murder investigations.
Rose has gone back to her first love of painting in oils and she has her first ever exhibition; er parents visit and she spends time showing them around.
One of her friends doesn't turn up to the opening, afterwards Rose funds out why, and is, once again, drawn into a murder investigation of a young man known to Rose and Rose's friends.
I throughly enjoy these books, a little formulaic but enjoyable to read. I'm looking forward to the next book.
Cosy crime fiction made all the better because I know that area in Cornwall and could imagine many of the scenes as if I was there. I like the character of Rose . . quite fickle with her relationships and not really ready to share her life with any one person. I found the crime aspect in the novel quite boring and a little bit confusing and I struggled with the middle part of the book, but the beautiful scenery and cosy lives of the characters gave me a feel good vibe and kept me turning the pages. So only 3 stars but I did enjoy other aspects of the book and will probably read more in the series.
This is number 4 in the Rose Trevelyan series. Not a bad plot, sometimes things were a bit slow. However the description of the coast, sea and scenery were so good it lifted this book to 3 stars from 2. Rose can't seem to commit to one man, which I have no problems with but to not give Jack a definitive answer seems quite cruel. We have some familiar characters in this book plus a couple of new ones and it is well written as an easy murder mystery. There is no violence or gore or bad language to be worried about if you are gifting this book. it's very easy to read these books in one day and not too much to bother your brain with so a cosy book to hunker down with.
I've seen mixed reviews about this, I did enjoy reading this but felt there should have been a bit more to it. I like Rose as a character and I like her attitude to Jack Pearce. I feel he's like a lovesick teenager with Rose but she doesn't always see him that way.
I like the descriptions of Cornwall and it was strange to see Leicester mentioned as its my home town. I may read more by this series as I read this as a standalone and wonder if there is more backstory to Jack and Rose earlier on in the series. I may return to the series at some point but as a standalone, it's a reasonably good story, with a good storyline. A kidnapping, a burglary, affairs, relationships, secrets.
I know these books are not mind bending psychological thrillers, but I really enjoy reading about Rose Trevelyan, Jack, the detective, and her other friends & family. I also like reading about life in Cornwall & the descriptions of the sea & coastal walks. Plus, Bolitho’s stories are easy to peruse & the familiar characters are pleasant to read about, although it would be nice to see Barry Rowe find a love interest & move on from Rose who is never going to be interested in anything other than friendship. So sad to discover the author passed away.
Meh. This book rates a "too." Too many words. Too little mystery. Too dragged out. Too many minor characters. Too much confusion. Too much promised; too little delivered. The story took a very minor character and elevated it to the major "who-dunnit" part of the story. Not enough explanation was offered as to why the demise was necessary except, maybe, because the story needed something to detract from the high-school relationship Rose has with DI Jack Pearce. The only upside to this story was Rose's parents.
An enjoyable read by the author Janie Bolitho . I love that it was set in a Cornwall that I know and I recognise some of the places that we talked about and it made a very good setting for the mystery that detective inspector Jack pearce how to solve Rose Trevelyan is a character that I feel divided about, she's very complex and I think she doesn't always know what she wants herself. The relationship between her and Jack is very spiky and even at the end of this book it's still rather unresolved and I found that a little bit frustrating .
It could only happen to Rose, another of her friend’s suffers a tragedy. Her parents come to visit and through them we learn more about the beauty of Cornwall. Poor Jack, a bit at the mercy of Rose, takes on board her theory’s and gets himself shot over his fear of her being in danger. He is clear about his feelings for her but she wants the best of both worlds, to be with him and to be left to do her own thing. This book is a great addition to the series.
This series again delivered the appealing characters and location, continuing relationship development and intelligent plot that I have always loved. However, I usually enjoy the propulsive plot in which each scene leads to the next. This time, when one of the characters gets into danger about half-way through, the plot stops for many pages to explain how that happened. I just wanted to skim that section and get on with it.
The title makes it sound like the main character gets betrayed and like the plot is full of drama, but the story is forced. The writing is vivid so I can understand the popularity of the series, but I'm not drawn in to reading more.
Wanted to read this simply as I’d read books 6 &7 of the series Jamie Bolitho had written and liked the characters. It was easy reading and perhaps more mentions of food and alcohol than necessary but overall made me smile.
The location which the book is set in is well known to me and I was able to follow precisely the movements of the plot. I look forwards to reading further books by Janie Bolitho.
Very sorry to read the author died of breast cancer in 2002. Not the best book I've read in terms of plot, characterisation or dialogue.......but I did enjoy a reading escape to Cornwall!
Another good one. Struggled to follow the ins and outs of how / why the death happened as it was explained towards the end but think I got the gist and it didn’t affect my enjoyment of the book
I also read this tale out of order but I often do that. It was a fairly gentle read till someone got shot and a lot of alcohol was consumed by everyone and they were still driving around.
Spends too much time on the heroine’s relationships and not enough on the mystery. Also the heroine is accused of being a risk taker but there is no sign of that in this book.
