I thought this book was better then the first one and in the beginning I could barely put it down. However, that urge seemed to fade away halfway through the book because I felt like the story was kind of being dragged on. I think it was a good read but it may have been more enjoyable if it was shorter and some things were cut out. The ending also left it open for a sequel which I may or may not read.
One those books you don't judge by it's cover. /// This is more than a summer silly read. /// It went far deeper and more serious than I would of ever thought and I loved it! /// I would totally read this again. I loved the summer fun and the characters but also the serious issues that were dealt with in this series. /// Don't miss out on this series guys!
I liked this one the best of the series. We finally learn about Diver’s past (though that got a little melodramatic for my liking and the resolution was told and not shown) and I liked that Summer was ultimately strong enough to decide she didn’t need either guy. I still hate Diana, and the whole plot with Marquez’s eating disorder was handled in a very strange manner, but this one was still much better than the previous installments.

First, I like the book, it is worth reading. I really don't know the sequence. I just bought this on booksale I thought this is the first one. I'm looking for the first book now..
I was a bit lost with the story, but there are descriptions that somehow gives me an idea from the first book. I should say it is worth reading.
It's all about Love, Friendship and Betrayal. I don't like Seth and Diana here.. so rude they betrayed Summer (especially Diana because she is Summer's cousin) though she's comfortable w/Austin, she rejected Austin because she was engaged with Seth... uuggh! screw Seth having a lil' affair with Diana.
As for Marquez and Diver (Summer's brother) I love them both. Including Summer and Austin they are so cute together. :)) lol
Prom is a night of magic senior year, and Summer isn't sure what to expect. What she does know is that she will be back in Crab Claw Key before starting college in the fall - time for more rays, time with her cousin Diana and bestie Marquez as they strike off on their own, and maybe some quality time with Seth. What she doesn't expect is what Seth offers, or to see Austin again, or what secrets are waiting for her in Florida. Summer is as resilient as the sun is hot in Florida, and this summer will prove trying for her and the ones she cares about the most. Somewhere along the way, the over-blown dramatics of the first four books (two if you count it as the omnibus + spring break) became real drama, with real stakes. The secrets are bigger, more testing, and will really push Summer to her limits of understanding, strength, and forgiveness. Maybe because some of it hit closer to home, maybe because the drama felt more real and less fabricated for Plot, whatever the reason, I thoroughly enjoyed this from beginning to end. I'm glad my high school career/following summer didn't have nearly as much going on as Summer. I'm glad my closest friends were fortunate enough to be rather drama-free, especially as compared to Summer. I can't help but root for Diana to win Seth, because by golly I want Summer and Austin to be a couple. Even with Austin's secret, I still want them to find happiness together - maybe because I related to that part of their dynamic a little too well (I read this just after helping my husband take care of his mother as she battled pancreatic cancer to the end this year - something which can also be in the genetics). And I also totally back Diana taking at least a semester for herself - I had a bad relationship my freshman year of college, and after I broke it off, I didn't date anyone else as I was too focused on finding, and being, me, alone, un-coupled. I also want Marquez and Diver to find happiness, and be stable, because their lives have been so tumultuous and yet also wild and free in some of the best ways. And apparently I got way more invested in these characters than I expected to, despite myself, despite the over-the-top start to this series. But I really enjoyed the read, it was the perfect light yet piercingly relevant escape I apparently needed at this time. And now I'm eagerly starting the final book in the series - and wondering if Summer will finally come around to Austin, and wonder if Jared will throw a monkey wrench in the whole thing... (I hope not!).
Quotes: "It felt right because you saw yourself there and you realized you'd let your fear get in the way of making the right choice. [...Y]ou can't make decisions about your life because it will make your mom happy or some guy happy." - page 142-143
[W]e're all acting, one way or another. And if you practice the act long enough, you start believing it. - page 439
"I don't think relationships just end for no reason," Diver said. "Sometimes it's too complicated for us to understand. All these interconnected things have to be just right before you can have love. That's why it's so amazing when it happens. Maybe it shouldn't be so surprising when it doesn't last. Maybe we should just be astounded that it happens at all." - page 514-515
"[...] But if I'm not sure of who I am and how strong I am, how can I ever really be someone you can trust and love?" - page 525
"Being in love is the most wonderful"--she smiled--"and the most wonderfully frustrating thing in the world. But I think it only works if you know what you want out of life. So you don't get lost in the other person." - page 536
Typos: A real trouper. - page 279 - should be “trooper”
"Thanks, he said, "but I'm just passing through." - page 338 - missing closing quotation mark after "Thanks"
She had a nice smile, Nice, but nosy. - page 410 - Looks like that first comma was supposed to be a period: ...smile. Nice,
Years ago I picked up this, Tan Lines by Katherine Applegate, when someone was passing it on at work. Except it’s books 5,6, and 7 from the Summer series. Eventually I read the first collection of books 1,2, and 3 from the first summer then book 4 from spring break, and now finally years later I’m getting to the reason I started the series in the first place.
This book has all the high school nostalgia for me. It’s so dramatic and over the top, it’s hard to turn away from. From eating disorders, to secret identities, to arson and that doesn’t include the relationship drama itself. It’s a fun, soap-y mess that’s easy loose yourself in.
These books were originally written in 1996 then repackaged and updated in 2008, which makes for an interesting mix. A lot of the pop culture references were updated to music and tv shows from the 2000s, yet the major plot points are still from the 90s. Things where only the one rich girl has a cell phone that they all share or looking up phone numbers in a phone book but also listening to Kayne West. It’s just a weird mix of different decades.
This series has been the best type of beach read. It’s the type of book I remember loving reading in summer in high school too. I now have one final book left, Sun-Kissed Christmas, which I may need to wait till December to finally complete these.
Okay, I will admit, it was better than the first one. And that is saying a lot, cause I loved Beach Blondes. But I will say, Tan Lines, made me really mad throughout the story. It wasn't the writing, or the characters, it was just what was happening. I also didn't like the ending at all. It wasn't until I started this book, that I realized that I should of read Spring Break Reunion, before this. I did notice that I was lost sometimes throughout the beginning of the stories. So if you read this series, learn from my mistake. I do hope the next book "Sun-Kissed Christmas" will pick up right where Tan Lines left off, and I get some of my questions answered. But other than those small things, I do believe this is a great summer series. I also love the cover for the books!
Slightly peeved that I read this out of order, seeing this is the 3rd book, not the 2nd.
Although I was a bit confused at the start about who was Austin and when did Diver and Marquez get together, overall I was still able to follow and keep up. It was a great addition to the series and the ending was nice and sweet, as I expected.
My favorite twist in the plot was finding out that Jared, the supposed injured man that Summer companions for, turns out to be Adam, the son of the rich senator she dated briefly in the fist book.
I liked the different conflicts, for they kept things interesting.
I suppose reading the actual 2nd book Spring Break would have been of great benifit and cleared up some things, but in all, it was good.
Off to read the 2nd book now!

I loved the plot. It felt like a series, something juicy & interesting coming out each chapter. Most of the stuff the characters did I forgive, but here's some stuff I really couldn't understand:
Summer was basically cheating on Seth before she found out about all the stuff with Seth and Diana, and she wants to pull a Diver & vanish talking about, "Don't try to find me"? girl... Even after she was telling Seth she forgave him for what he did, she still could've mentioned the stuff she was doing. Then the situation with Diver's parents, girl... if he wants to call them his parents then it's his life? yes being kidnapped was sad, but they were good to him so he considered them his parents. Summer was annoying me with that.
Marquez was annoying coming to the end, she's tryna play morale police & harassing Diana talking 'bout she can't let evil slide or something like that]'? sis your best friend cheating on her long-distance boyfriend & that's all peachy & good, you don't harass Summer for the stuff she did, but with Diana, you wanna harass her? blaming her for ruining summer's life? girl... I can't even with this girl
In the end I loved all characters EXCEPT Marquez, it really was a good book.

i feel like this is more of a 3 1/2 but i loved how the plot was only the trio and the two boys while the plot was much more open like divers story with caroline and jared???? hopefully theres another book because i want to see what happens w jared. also DIANA IS AN ANNOYING ASS BITCH she got on my nerves SOOO BAD..seth wasn’t any better but at the start i wanted her to end with seth but then when i saw the letter and everything after, i was done. i do agree with other that say the story was kinda dragged on but i did enjoy the book a lot as i reached the middle of the book. the start weirded me out because the humor the author used was very inappropriate (harming yourself jokes) but also this book was made decades ago so i guess it wasn’t that big of a deal then 😒… but i like how she ended everything on good terms and decided to focus on college but pls get rid of diana i hate that summer easily let it go while even marquez was like be Fr.
I got this book for free at a book sale and deemed it my trash summer read. I never read the first book and I frankly don't plan on doing so. I knew this was going to be a bad book from the cover alone, but I was excited to dive into the drama. Well, the drama disappointed me. There was so much of it and then the resolution of them all fell flat. Still, it was interesting enough to keep me reading. But my GOD, did the characters piss me off. I think the only one I really liked was Diver. The rest were stupid, evil, or plain frustrating. I don't need every character to be likable, but I need more than ONE to hold on to. Also the omniscient third POV threw me for a loop. I think this is the first book I ever read like that. I got used to it after a while, but I don't think it's my cup of tea.
I liked it, but not as much as the first one. Marquez was just annoying with how stupid she was being with her weight issues. It just didn't fit with her from the previous books. Diana pissed me off numerous times! I mean I thought she was over being an absolute B?? Summer was still Summer for most of the book which was nice but she also grows up quite a bit in this one which I really like. Unlike the other two she makes mistakes and learns from them. I also was really happy to finally learn about Diver's past and what he went through growing up! I liked how it ended and I will be reading the last book soon.
Summer, Diana, and Marquez decide to get a place together this summer down in Coconut Key. Of course the summer doesn’t go as planned...
This novel has more depth to it in my opinion. It deals with Summers relationship with Seth and Austin, as she’s clearly indecisive. Marquez goes through a lot in this novel with the development of an eating disorder, losing her family and almost Diver. Speaking of Diver, we get to hear more about his childhood and how hard it really was.
To say this book is low quality is putting it lightly. Though I did love it. I’ve read this book so many times, and I don’t have any problem with the predictability.
I’d probably rate it lower if Summer ended up with either dude, but the fact she ended the book as a single woman made me want to go 4 stars.
I personally would not recommend this book if you have high standards, but I do love a little beachy young adult book.
Also, I love an Adam Merrick (sans Merrick family) cameo.

The book was good. I noticed typos in the book for starters. I was a little confused about Austin as I had read the books out of order. I read it in a few days. I thought the story was cute and a "quick summer read." I did appreciate the detail in the characters and how much was happening in this book. It kept me wanting to read. I don't really get the point of Adam being in the story. It would have been a twist if they started a spark or something but he was not needed in my opinion.

I hate that the author made summer a cheater. It doesn’t make sense to me. When I first read this during my teen yrs I didn’t see anything wrong with Austin being so pushy. It was so romanticized in this book that I thought wow I wish I had that…..now that I’m older it’s unsettling reading his parts.
Him being pushy and inappropriate with Summer by kissing her touching her and not respecting what she tells him. Yuck

this really is the kinda book that u HAVE to ignore the cover of and JUST READ.
genuinely this whole series is perfect, it may be cheesy and a little outlandish sometimes but i feel connected to every single character and cried when i finally finished the very last page.
Teenage/high school love and challenges kind of book. Nothing not predictable about the book. Nonetheless, a good read if you are looking for a relaxed, chill book.
Finally finished after 7?! years? This series is so-so. Not much happens and these 3 books deal with the fall out of the Spring Break book. The Making Out and Ocean City series are better.
The book Tan Lines is written by Katherine Applegate. I really like this book because it is fun filled with drama and excitement. This book takes place in the Florida Keys on a beach apartment. The main character in this book is Summer and she is always worried and looking at the worst. I found this book by looking through the back of this classroom and taking it as a joke but actually getting into the story. Summer is engaged to her high school sweetheart Seth. Seth is spending the summer in California while she is in Florida with her friends. While she is in Florida she starts to fall for this boy named Austin and is debating if she should break up with Seth or end things with Austin. My favorite part is when she first falls for Austin and actually realizes it and she does not know what to do with Seth and is just in a big juggle. This lead to how she tries to stay away from Austin but just can’t. My next favorite part is when she is in a fight about what college to go to, either UWM or somewhere down in Florida and she has no idea what to do. I personally really like this book because once I read it for at least 5 minutes it is really hard to put it down because it gets in depth fast. This is the second book in the series after “Beach Blondes.” I think someone would really enjoy this if they like reading drama books because it gets very very in depth.
