I’m loving all the detective style mystery MG I’ve been reading lately, & this one is no exception! Loved this! Poppy Pym has grown up in the circus, taming lions before lunch & learning acrobatics in the afternoon. But when she turns 11, her circus family decides she needs a more traditional education, & she is sent to boarding school. At first Poppy doesn't fit in at St Smithen's, a school that is very different from the circus. Then, an ancient Egyptian ruby arrives at school & dangerous accidents start occurring. Suddenly it's up to Poppy to save her new school & solve the mystery of the Pharaoh's curse! Such engaging writing, with the most endearing lovable characters including Poppy & her 2 new friends Ingrid & Kip, as well as her incredible circus family! I’m so in love! I love how this has the whole girl going to boarding school for the 1st time, where she solves mysteries with her new friends-but with the twist of said girl having grown up in the circus up until this point! I don’t like the circus unless no wild animals. This only has 1 wild animal-Buttercup the Lion..the way he’s written & everything about it..total fantasy type expectations lol so I’m fine with it, & they treat him like a member of the family. Buttercup, Luigi, & Magnificent Marvin have my heart. While maybe an “unusual” family to some, these are some entertaining, lovely people, & Poppy has such love for them, & they for her. It was also so charming experiencing school for the 1st time with Poppy, & her trying to find her way in this new, very different life. Her making her 1st friends her age was so heartwarming. Best dynamic, & they made the best team. Great whodunnit with a great cast of suspects, & an ancient curse. This is full of mystery, family, friendship, mystery, adventure, & a lot of heart. There’s also great illustrations, maps, newspaper clippings, & more sprinkled throughout. Highly recommend. Reading & loving the 2nd book now. BEAUTIFUL cover by Beatrice Bencivenm as well.💜

Helt okej middlegrade-bok som jag dock trodde skulle vara snäppet bättre. Jag hade önskat få läsa mer om Poppys cirkusfamilj. Det var liksom de som fångade mitt intresse, allt med skolan kändes lite utdraget och fram till mitten av boken tycker jag att allting upprepades för mycket.
Förstår inte jämförelserna som gjorts med Harry Potter. De enda likheterna jag fann var de fyra elevhemmen och poäng som både kunde delas ut och tas bort. För övrigt förstod jag inte poängen med elevhemmen. Kanske finns det mer anledning till dessa i någon av de andra böckerna?

What a fun book! It was full of intriguing characters and an exciting mystery and fun alliteration. Seriously, I just love saying "Poppy Pym."

Das fröhliche Zirkusmädchen mit dem großen Herzen strotzt vor Talent und steckt einen mit ihrer unbändigen Lebenslust an, sodass man mit einem Dauergrinsen an den Seiten ihrer Geschichte klebt. Poppy Pym weiß genau, wie sie ihre Leser in Atem hält, und erzählt ihr Abenteuer mit so viel Witz und Charme, dass man gar nicht anders kann, als sein Herz an sie zu verlieren. Sie hat mich mit ihrer quirligen und tapferen Art im Handumdrehen um den Finger gewickelt und so begeistert, dass ich „Poppy Pym und der gestohlene Rubin“ nach der letzten Seiten am liebsten sofort nochmal gelesen hätte!
Aber nicht nur Poppy konnte mich verzaubern, im Gegenteil: Ich habe an jeden Charakter aus ihrer Geschichte einen Teil meines Herzens verloren. Ihre verrückte und bunt zusammengewürfelte Zirkusfamilie sowie ihre Schulfreunde Ingrid und Kip sind so liebenswürdig, einzigartig und entzückend, wie man sie nur selten trifft. Laura Wood hat für ihr Debüt grandiose Charaktere geschaffen, die einen so sehr verzaubern, dass man gar ein wenig trauriger darüber ist, nicht zu ihnen in das Buch schlüpfen zu können. Sie alle sind so wunderbar außergewöhnlich und herzig, so unvergleichlich und drollig – und dass trotz ihrer großen Anzahl und ihrer vergleichsweisen kurzen Zeit im Scheinwerferlicht! Allein Poppys Zirkusfamilie besteht aus 13 weiteren Mitgliedern. Verwechslungsgefahr besteht hier allerdings nie, dafür sind die Figuren so individuell und verschieden.
Obwohl nur ein kleiner Teil der Geschichte tatsächlich im Zirkus spielt, spannt sich die gelungene Manegen-Atmosphäre über das gesamte Buch. Sobald sie sich mit dem Internatssetting und der geheimnisvollen Stimmung des ägyptischen Fluchs mischt, ist das Lieblingsbuch-Gefühl perfekt! Die Handlung entwickelt sich schnell zu einem mitreißenden Abenteuer voller Spannung und Humor, das man nicht aus der Hand legen kann. Poppy Pym hat mich bestens unterhalten, mich zum Lachen gebracht und atemlos an den Seiten kleben lassen. Ich bin restlos begeistert, verzaubert und verliebt! Dieses Buch gehört definitiv zu meinen Lieblingsbüchern und ist ein unverzichtbares Mustread für alle, deren Herz für einmalige Geschichten schlägt. Ich hoffe inständig, dass Laura Wood uns noch mit einigen hinreißenden Fortsetzungen zu „Poppy Pym“ versorgen wird!

Poppy Pym och Faraos förbannelse var ett oväntat recensionsexemplar från Modernista, men ändå en bok jag varit nyfiken på sedan jag först såg den i deras katalog. Förväntningarna var lite halvhöga, sådär, och jag fann att jag gillade denna bok mycket.
Handlingen var supercharmig. Jag gillar hur det känns lite tvärtemot (precis som Poppy beskriver det), att Poppy är uppväxt på cirkusen, och nu ska gå i en vanlig skola. Jag gillade mysteriebiten, trots att det var rätt lätt att lista ut vem den skyldiga var, och Poppys nya liv i den vanliga världen var väldigt underhållande. En snabbläst och spännande bok, som fick mig att sitta med ett leende på läpparna under hela läsningens gång.
Jag tyckte mycket om Poppy, Ingrid och Kip. En härlig trio, som kompletterade varandra bra och som ofta fick mig att skratta. Poppys cirkusfamilj var dessutom vansinnigt charmanta, och telefonsamtalen och breven från dem var något av det bästa med boken.
Poppy Pym och Faraos förbannelse var så mysig. Spännande och charmig, och jag hoppas att det inte dröjer alltför länge innan nästa bok blir översatt. Jag vill gärna läsa mer om Poppy Pyms äventyr. Rekommenderas varmt.

Here writing style is fabulous and witty. How it's written as the main character poppy adds a great deal of entertainment to the book. The way she added and built the characters in. I was wondering if I was a little to old for this book when I first picked it up but seriously if you like a fantastic, quick and adventurous read PLEASE GET THIS BOOK !
Kids and adults need to be reading this. I seriously can't wait to recommend this book and to share it with my nephew when he gets older I think he'll really really enjoy it.
To add to a captivating story comes the front cover which is eye catching and creative !

Väldigt härlig humor och roliga karaktärer. Gillar hela upplägget med internatskola och mysteriet. Dock så tycker jag att den påminner onödigt mycket om Harry Potter, var det t.ex. nödvändigt med fyra elevhem och alla har varsin fågel som symbol? Det hade ju ingen betydelse för handlingen.
Nåja, hursomhelst så är den riktig charmig och jag är sugen på att läsa nästa bok i serien.

- I forgot how much fun this series actually was and it was nice finally getting the back story for Poppy (I read the fourth book first so I was a bit confused when I read it).

Poppy Pym is exactly the kind of book that I would have picked up as a kid when I was trying to devour every book in my local library. It has everything that I loved – and still love – about kids books. Not only is Poppy’s voice fun and easy to read, there’s also some fantastic illustrations, maps and newspaper articles dotted throughout the story too, making it all the more engaging to read.
Poppy Pym grew up in a circus but is about to start a new term at her very first school. Saint Smithen’s seems big and scary compared to the comforting chaos of the circus and Poppy only ever seems to end up in trouble for just being herself. Itching for a great adventure like that of her favourite book character, Poppy is delighted when Egyptian artefacts are being displayed in the school and one of them just so happens to be cursed! When mysterious accidents start happening around school, it’s up to Poppy and her friends to figure out who’s behind them, before it’s too late.
I often find it hard, knowing where to start with my reviews of middle grade books. There’s just so much that I always want to talk about!
First of all, while Poppy may not have a traditional family, the circus family she does have are a lively bunch of characters that fill each page they’re on with their love for Poppy. I got such a warm fuzzy feeling every time she was talking to her family. Despite people teasing her about her upbringing, Poppy stays proud of her family and I love that she loved them so much. It’s always great to read books with wonderfully big and eclectic families.
Then there were Poppy’s friends, Kip and Ingrid. These two were such a great pair! I’ve noticed that there always seems to be a trend of three when it comes to middle grade friendships, with one that’s brave, one that’s smart, and one that’s funny usually. I think Poppy, Kip and Ingrid work really well as a trio and they’re a delight to read. Kip’s desperation to be taller and stronger, while Ingrid has an almost infinite knowledge of everything, make them great characters in their own right.
One of my favourite things about this book was that there wasn’t any outright nasty bullies. There was one girl who was snobby, but she didn’t have the same Harry v Draco nastiness that can occur within school settings. I liked the way the kids butted heads without having any real conflict.
Finally, the mystery of the curse. This was brilliantly done. Having all the little extras – such as newspaper clippings – just really helps to bring things to life and make you feel like you’re along for the ride with Poppy, seeing the things she is. It was an excellent addition. I loved all the misdirections that were added in – even I was shocked by the time the culprit was revealed! Always a good bonus to a read.
An excellent school read just in time for the end of the summer holidays. An utter delight that is now a firm resident on my list of favourite middle grade series.

Poppy Pym is exactly the kind of book that I would have picked up as a kid when I was trying to devour every book in my local library. It has everything that I loved – and still love – about kids books. Not only is Poppy’s voice fun and easy to read, there’s also some fantastic illustrations, maps and newspaper articles dotted throughout the story too, making it all the more engaging to read.
Poppy Pym grew up in a circus but is about to start a new term at her very first school. Saint Smithen’s seems big and scary compared to the comforting chaos of the circus and Poppy only ever seems to end up in trouble for just being herself. Itching for a great adventure like that of her favourite book character, Poppy is delighted when Egyptian artefacts are being displayed in the school and one of them just so happens to be cursed! When mysterious accidents start happening around school, it’s up to Poppy and her friends to figure out who’s behind them, before it’s too late.

I'd like to introduce you to my new best friend, Poppy Pym. Most children dream of running away to the circus but Poppy was actually brought up in one. Discovered in the magical top hat of Marvin the Magician Poppy narrowly avoids being called Tomato for the rest of her life and is adopted by Madame Pym and the rest of the circus gang. Fast forward ten years and it's decided that it's time for Poppy to give up her (circus) homeschooling and go to a proper school. Step forward Miss Baxter and Saint Smithens boarding school.
Whirled away from everything she knows Poppy is feeling lost and bewildered but soon makes friends in Ingrid and Letty, her roommates, and Kip, a boy of small stature determined to grow! Finding it hard to settle in completely Poppy's spirits are soon lifted by news of an exhibition of Egyptian artifacts coming to the school. Once owned by a former student the display naturally comes with a mystery built in. Fascinated by a children's detective series she used to read, Detective Dougie Valentine, when Poppy and the other children learn of a supposedly cursed ruby as part of the exhibit they all delve into what might be a mystery to solve!
Caos and mayhem ensue as there are disasters, accidents, and warnings of a mystical nature. Enter a proper policeman, Inspector Hartley, who seems to take a shine to Miss Baxter but warns against Poppy and her friends becoming involved anything criminal. Needless to say, they ignore his advice and are soon up to their necks in trouble! Poppy's circus family arrive just in the nick of time to help the intrepid heroine solve the mystery and they all lived happily ever after...
Poppy Pym and the Pharoah's Curse is an excellent start to a new series by Laura Wood. The characters are so well written and I defy you not to become attached to Poppy, Ingrid, Kip, and all the other fascinating characters. The circus is a wonder, I would pay to see Buttercup the lion or Fanella or even Marvin the (not-quite-so) Magnificent! Saint Smithens also seems like my sort of school and I can't wait to read more of Poppy's grand adventures.

Well this book was a fun read, and a fun mix of different themes! We've got a boarding school, a circus, a mystery and some Ancient Egypt thrown in there all blended together to make an entertaining read! You all know I can be lured by anything involving Ancient Egypt and I loved the echoes in this book from real history. If you don't know what I'm talking about take a look at Tutankhamen and his "curse", you might find it interesting.
Poppy Pym was an easy read, and fast paced, easily read in one sitting. There's plenty of action and plenty of humour thanks to the colourful cast of characters, particularly Poppy's circus family! They where a lively and interesting bunch! The mystery kept you intrigued as you tried to put the pieces together and work out who the culprit was. Overall it was a very well written, entertaining book with a fantastic heroine that will keep you laughing the entire way through!

Très sympa, ça faisait un moment que je souhaitais decourvrir cette auteure (pour ses romans Y'a et adult) mais j'ai beaucoup apprécié cette lecture.
Le petit monde de Poppy Pym est vraiment touchant et sympathique. J'ai bien l'intention de lire d'autre tomes de la série et de lire d'autre romans de l'auteure.

Charming boarding school mystery. Lots of concepts heavily borrowed from HP Philosopher’s Stone (boarding school, orphan, precious stone being kept guarded, chemistry teacher suspected of being the baddie) but original voice and delivered well. I was a little annoyed that some subplots were only touched upon such as the circus background and Ingrid being booksmart but not creative but I guess there isn’t enough word count allowance for middle grade novels to flesh out character development etc. Looking forward to reading the others in this series for my class.

I picked this up from the charity shop for a light read. As a kid, I was quite into stories about Ancient Egypt, so I was hoping for a fun sort of mystery adventure story.
I didn't quite get the sense of mystery and adventure that I hoped for. There were some moments in the story that seemed a little bit cheesy and silly, but the characters were lively and funny, and it was very lighthearted reading. It was a nice little story, but I don't think I'll read it again, so I'll probably pass it on to someone else for them to enjoy.

I LOVED THIS BOOK!!! It was such an exciting and funny story and I am surprised it has received so many bad reviews. Poppy and her friends are so interesting and nice to read about and the plot was exciting and attention grabbing. The end was quite dark and unexpected but it was a really nice , feel good book and I would be very interested in reading the sequels!

Easy and fun read. This is the kind of book to read after finishing a long series and want something light to read. Loved the storyline - was slightly predictable. Rated it 3/5 just because it wasn’t the most detailed book ever but was still good nonetheless

what a fun and exciting little book. who doesn't love a good mystery? I enjoyed Poppy's adventure with her best friends and her crazy but hilarious circus family.
