Excellent study we did with my ladies Bible study group at church. I really like his presentation of the material, and the way that the video and study homework overlap so well, it really drove his points home to me.

I loved this book. It really challenged my walked with God. There were times I was convicted and yet inspired and encouraged. His biblical definition of love really spoke to what I always thought but could not verbalize. I recommend this book highly.

In the book Horizontal Jesus, author and Pastor Tony Evans, writes about our how our interaction and relationship with people directly influences and affects our relationship with God. Evans writes: “When we don’t align our actions with God’s teaching on how we are to be with one another, we are not removing ourselves from God’s family. We are not cutting ourselves off from Him. But we are limiting the full expression and experience of His presence and goodness in our lives—not because He is mean, but because He is good.”
This is a very practical book with great stories and illustrations. I would highly recommend this book to challenge anyone. I received a copy of this e-book from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Super

I always enjoy reading anything written by Dr. Evans. He has a unique way with words and uses many illustrations or life experiences to bring about a powerful Biblical truth. This book was no different. I really loved how he took all of the things that encompass living out God-centred relationships and simply, yet profoundly, related it to our relationship with God. I would recommend this to anyone, especially in the local church where many times our relationships with one another could use some biblical teaching and instructing.

A good overview of how to relate authentically as a Christian in the body of Christ.

Evans touched upon difficult issues an individual might face in how he/she might relate to others, and the fallibility of the earthly church as best as he could in the simplest way possible. Some fundamental theological ideas were simplistically conveyed.

With that, this book serves as a helpful guide for the new/young believer, and an encouraging quick reminder for the seasoned theologian. Useful for Christian leaders in terms of problem identification (of relational difficulties) and ways to solve them.

Great insight

It took me a while to read this because I found myself highlighting numerous passages. Dr. Evans has tremendous insight and I appreciate him sharing that. If your relationship with God isn't all you want it to be, read this book and apply the lessons taught. It will help you and others you meet on life's journey.

Ministering in Love

It is not enough to hear the word of God. We must be ambassadors of Jesus to a world that does not know how to love and minister to one another from God’s perspective. Tony Evans shows us how in this easy to read and apply book. All we have to do is take that step of faith and trust God to enable us in His work. The world would be a better place for it.

Often heard in many Christian conversations, sermons, podcasts, etc, there is a common saying that we need to work on our vertical before our horizontal. In other words, we need to work on our relationship with God before reaching out to others. The book Horizontal Jesus by Dr Tony Evans describes the opposite.

Dr Evans describes in his book that we should emulate Jesus through our actions. Why are we waiting for someone else to do feed the hungry, clothe the poor, and shelter the homeless when we can do just that ourselves? It reminds me of the song by Matthew West, Do Something. Like the book, Matthew West describes how instead of just waiting or watching something happen, we do something about it.

In Horizontal Jesus, Dr Evans shares that we need to live as Jesus did, do what Jesus did, react the way Jesus did, and be the example of Jesus here on earth. It is our job to be the example that non-Christians can see Jesus in us.

Recently, I also heard on the radio that we should live in a manner that causes others to look at themselves and wonder what they're missing in their lives. Horizontal Jesus makes that same point. We need to be the hands and feet for Jesus while we are here on earth.

Horizontal Jesus was provided to me complimentary through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. There is a study guide version that goes along with the book. Published by Harvest House Publishers and available at your local or electronic bookstore, Horizontal Jesus is an excellently written book that places the reader on the edge of going out and doing something.

And what a great place to be!

This was not my first encounter with the concept of love and relationships as pathways to becoming a true reflection of Christ, but this book took my understanding to a whole new level. While I had previously viewed the idea of loving others as akin to simply being kind and courteous, Evans delves into the deeper intricacies of this principle, providing practical examples of how to apply it in various aspects of life.

Evans's approach to the subject is remarkably down-to-earth, offering actionable insights on how to incorporate love into our daily interactions. He guides readers through practical scenarios, from conducting business dealings to treating the less fortunate, raising children, and even interacting with law enforcement personnel during traffic stops. His lessons are not only relatable but also easy to implement, requiring only a willingness to exert effort and make a conscious commitment to loving others.

What sets "Horizontal Jesus" apart from other works on this theme is its emphasis on the tangible application of love in everyday life. Evans doesn't merely preach about the importance of love; he demonstrates how to translate it into meaningful actions that can transform our relationships and interactions with the world around us.

In essence, "Horizontal Jesus" is a practical guide to living a Christ-like life, not just through abstract concepts but through concrete actions that embody love, compassion, and understanding. It's a book that challenges readers to step beyond mere words and embrace the transformative power of love in all its practical manifestations.

"When the body of Christ is functioning as it was designed to function, people who are paralyzed by their pain are not ignored. People who are stuck are not abandoned. Instead, others in God's family love them, reach out to them, pick them up, and take them to Jesus-even if that means climbing up on a roof, digging a hole, sweating a bit, and carefully lowering them down [Mark 2:3-4]." These sentences encapsulate what Dr. Evans admonishes the body of Christ to do, through various "one another" texts found in the New Testament. This is a valuable book that refutes the me-mentality and selfishness so prevalent in our society.

"...a lot of what God wants to do with, in and through you is not just for you."
"The truth is that we are always blessed to be a blessing."

And there we begin a journey that demonstrates how our relationship with others can affect our experience with God. Throughout scripture and Mr. Evans' experience, God acts on our behalf as we live out the "one another" passages towards others.

A good read with practical challenges to live out our faith so that others may experience the love of Christ through us.
