Arresting Developments

Rate this book
Coyotes, human escorts for illegal aliens, are a problem on the border. This particular coyote is even more problematic when it turns out to be the younger brother of a close friend. In this story by James Buchanan, not everything is as it appears in this Coyote Crossing, especially when the leader of the pack winds up with his head bashed in. Josh Lanyon entertains readers with In A Dark Wood. Being lost in the woods isn't a fun first date, especially when the forrest is the very one in which a teenage boy finds a human skull. Escaping your past is hard when you're a former porn star. In L. Picaro's Gamble Everything one man is trying to do just that, but someone else is intent on making him remember all that he'd rather forget.

This is really 3.5 stars. This is a three story anthology all written by different authors. All stories had characters that were in law enforcement.
Although I liked this book, I liked James Buchanan's story the best...the oter two were pretty good. I wish the stories were longer and the characters had time to develop more emotional attachment to one another. Not to say that it's a bad thing though, they are all in the beginnings of a relationship, were everything is new and you don't get angry at each other because they squeezed the toothpaste tube in the middle or forgot the put the dish in the dishwasher new. Still a good, light enjoyable read.

This three-story anthology was, as usual, a mixed bag. The first story was good, the second was a Josh Lanyon story I'd read before and loved, and the third one was just kind of a hot mess. The thing that surprised me most, though, were the grammatical errors. I've reached the point where I expect them (not accept them, mind you, just expect them) from self-published works, but I expect better from "real" publishers.

Story about cops and about a past you want to forget, and about doors opened in front of you that you want to pass on.

Coyote Crossing by James Buchanan: I was totally misled by the blurb and by my lack of English knowledge. When I started reading this story I was expecting a shifter story about cops. And instead Coyote is a word meaning that men who help Mexican people passing the border. Ricardo, Rick, is a gay cop, who has recently dumped his cheating boyfriend and moved again near his hometown near the Mexican border. And during a police round up he steps into Agustin, Augi, the little brother of his high school best friend. Rick is immediately attracts by Augi, even before he recognizes him, but he not dares to make a move: apart the fact that he has always considered him like a little brother, Augi can't possibile be interested in a gay relationship. And then Augi is a troubled man, with a lot problem with justice and also his family has disowned him. But he has also some surprise for Rick... A good story about the longings of your teen years and the desire to forget about a present life you bear no more and the tiny hope to build something important for the future.

In a Dark Wood by Josh Lanyon: Luke, a cop, and Tim, a journalist and travel writer, meet at a house party. A common friend wants to put them together and they oblige. During the dinner Tim tells a story about his past, an experiece he has had in a woods concerning an abandoned house and a human skull, and Luke sees a chance to get to know better Tim asking him to go together again in that place. But during their two days off Luke and Tim's relationship sees up and down, probably due to Tim's dependency to alchool. The desire to not admit his weakness makes Tim being a little nasty with Luke, but Luke is a very perfect man, ready to support and comfort the man he maybe wants to be a little more than a friend. A beautiful story that confirm my belief that Josh Lanyon is a wonderful voice in M/M romance (yes I said romance, cause I like his personal way to tell us the love).

Gamble Everything by L. Picaro: this is maybe the story with the more interesting plot but which left me with the feeling that the author has tried to tell us too much in too few pages and in too less time. Apart some problems with objects which first aren't there and then suddenly appear (pay attention to the condoms...), I have had too open doors in a story that I haven't seen closed in the end. Adam is a police officer who patrols the street of a little province town. One night he meets Marc, a former gay porn star who seems to have some trouble with unkwon stalkers who threaten his life. Both Adam and Marc are lonely (even if when Adam meets Marc, the last is coming out of a gay club...) and they share an hot sexy night which has the scope to fullfill Adam's phantasies about the well-hung porn star. But one night seems not to be enough and then Marc's problems are not still finished...

This anthology contains three gay mysteries/romances. It introduced me to two new authors that I didn't know yet: James Buchanan and L. Picaro - I will definitely read more books by those two. The third short story was written by my favorite gay mysteries author, Josh Lanyon (he was actually the reason why I got this ebook). I liked all three stories. I wasn't really floored by them, but I liked them a lot. Because of their shortness, the authors couldn't develop the characters properly, but the cases were interesting and I liked the authors' style. A good, solid book.

A nice collection of three action-packed stories featuring cops - one is Border Patrol, but that's pretty close!

James Buchannan provides the Border Patrol officer, Rick, who has moved back to New Mexico from California leaving his cheating ex behind. Rick's first night time raid picks up more than he bargained for. The coyote leading the illegals through the desert is someone he knows. Rick hasn't seen his best friend's little brother, Augi, for a lot of years and is shocked to find Augi on the wrong side of the law - and to find that Augi has grown up to be a really hot guy. How they react to one another and avoid Augi getting killed develops into a good Happy For Now ending.

Josh Lanyon introduces another of his wonderful flawed heroes in Tim "I don't have a drinking problem". The city loving travel writer agrees to a camping date with attractive detective, Luke, and doesn't cope well with the great outdoors or reliving a nightmare walk in the woods from when he was thirteen. Tim and Luke survive the nightmare and manage to head for that HFN despite everything - although that HFN is in doubt until the final paragraphs.

L Piccaro has Adam, a patrol officer still mourning his lover's death from AIDS four years before. Rescuing Marc, a retired bi porn star, from a roadside accident leads to a mutually agreed one-night-stand that Adam can't forget. A couple more on-the-job meetings and a near fatal shooting get Adam and Marc to agree to something better than just one-night.

The short story format doesn't leave much room for extended plot and relationship development and the endings of all three stories are rather neat and a little sudden, but satisfying. Some of the plot devices in L Piccaro's story felt a bit clumsy, as though they had been shoe-horned in after the fact to either lengthen the story or add more complexity.

1. Didn't work for me. I read the other review and it seems that I'm a minority but I find this story boring, without a direction and predictable.
2. I prefer this one. Love the atmosphere. The ending let to desire.
3. Hot sex. Story correct. And the sudden appearance of condom (p.125/147:"Where is it? Tell me you have some handy. And a condom?" Marc reached to the side and partially opened a drawer. "In here," he gasped, moving deeper onto Adam's finger. "No condoms." p.127/147: Marc reached out and grabbed a condom from the open drawer before he pushed away from the desk,)

I picked this up to read based on reviews of the James Buchanan story, Coyote Crossing, as I'm a huge fan of his Deputy Joe series. I was not disappointed. Of course, it never hurts to have another Josh Lanyon story either.

Collection of m/m romances about cops and the power of the past. While the stories were good, most had editing issues... I'm beginning to see that as a pattern in ebooks from Aspen Mountain Press.
