Elizabeth Bennet is a young witch when Mr. Darcy appears in Hertfordshire at the assembly. Her powers have not yet been mastered yet Elizabeth uses them to amuse herself, and to tempt Mr. Darcy. Not long after, the eldest Bennet sisters end up at Netherfield where Elizabeth's ambitious use of her magic leads to disastrous results. Why does her power seem greater at Netherfield and how will she undo the mess before the wrong proposals are given?
This is a cute short story. Seems like it is written as YA.
Elizabeth is a young witch, the only one in her family to inherit her mother's powers, but she has never dedicated herself to learning how to properly use them. When she overhears Darcy's insult and sees how he holds himself above her neighbors at the Meryton assembly, she casts a simple spell that doesn't seem to work on him. This leads her to finally seek out her mother for training. Mrs. Bennett takes her in hand and begins to work with her, giving her a book of spells to read and study with the warning that even this white magic can have damaging results when not used correctly.
Elizabeth goes to Netherfield to care for her sister Jane, and suddenly her powers are enhanced with unintended consequences. Poor Miss Bingley suffers the worst from it at first, which is amusing. While this alarms Elizabeth, she really starts to panic when a spell she attempts causes Mr. Darcy and Jane to be attracted to each other. When she tries to fix that, Mr. Bingley starts pursuing HER.
There are a few editing errors, and both Bingley and Darcy, who are new acquaintances, call the ladies "Jane" and "Elizabeth" instead of "Miss Bennet" and "Miss Elizabeth," which would be inappropriate. The two couples certainly are unchaperoned too much. Since the story isn't one to be taken seriously, these mistakes really don't diminish the reading pleasure by much.
It doesn't take long to read, and it's a pleasant little tale.
Author has little understanding of the Regency period
I love Pride and Prejudice variations that involve fantasy, but this one was pretty messy. The author didn’t seem to understand Regency manners and customs. It’s really difficult to do a novella well since there are so few pages to develop both characters and plot. I feel like the author may have benefited from expanding it into a full length novel. As it stands at 90 pages we are thrown immediately into the action and there is very little world building. I would have liked to have known more about how the magic worked or why only one child inherits magic from their parent. It felt very rushed.
This was such a cute, quick read! I find these characters seem to blend well with the idea of magic. Having both Elizabeth and Darcy with powers is a nice treat, and Mrs Bennet being the magical parent makes her personality quite endearing. Cute and playful plot!
