Controlling Circumstances

Rate this book
For a brief moment, Belle believed she was in love. In her young, naive mind, she had assumed love was all-consuming and everlasting, capable of withstanding the test of time. Sometimes, when you're young, you can become easily blinded by the desires of the heart, leading you to make poor choices in the name of love. Belle had been no different. Her dream man turned out to be her worst nightmare. Her assumption of love proved to be completely off track, erecting walls to form around her heart. Now at the age of thirty, Belle is left questioning why life isn't as easy as she'd expected. Gabe watched her from a distance. From the first flash of her red hair and the way she walked, looking so focused on nothing but where she was going, he felt a sudden and fierce magnetic pull to her. Their eyes met just once before she crossed the street, but Gabe felt it. That deep longing that filled his chest and threatened to suffocate him. He needed to know her...all of her. But he needed to control himself first. With danger on the rise, can the love of one man be enough to control the situation? Or will it be just another circumstance left to chance?

Controlling Circumstances. Boy, was I on a roller coaster with this book. The outline of the book is basically explained in the title. It's about control. Finding the control you lost and realising that it it takes one person to build up your trust. That the walls you made to protect yourself will come down crumbly because you have nothing to hide from him. Here comes Gabe and Belle. These two were made for each other. He excelled in control as he was his own boss. He reigned Belle in when she thought she was alone. He showed her that loving someone won't make you weak or lose the control you've been searching for. It's about putting all your trust into the one person who wants nothing but the best for you. Belle was dealt a bad Life Card. She was rewarded with her best friend and lover but I was proud of the fact that she was able to find love after a bad experience. This shows that love is powerful, trust is important and your weaknesses can be conquered when you've got the right people beside you. Amazing novel, Jean. 5 stars xx

This is the first book I have read by this author and I was not disappointed! It was the perfect mix of love, pain and suspense that kept me wanting more.
Belle has been dealt a tough hand. After dealing with a traumatic incident while in college that she never really recovered from, she is hit again with so horrible news.
In walks Gabe, more like in crashes Gabe. He is a very unexpected surprise in Belle's life and she isn't sure the timing on right but Gabe isn't one to take no for an answer and Belle isn't sure she can say no. What happens when Belle's present issue and her past collide? We know Belle is strong enough and determined enough to deal with it but Is Gabe willing and strong to take a chance or will it send him running for the hills?
You will not want to pass this book up, it is a fantatic read!

I was gifted this copy by the author. Thank you, Ms Kelso for that.

Belle is still suffering the shocks waves from an attack at college, 8 years later. Its her 30th brithday and her friend drags her out to celebrate. Gabe works the bar and he has been watching Belle for some time, not in a creepy stalker sort of way, but in a I need this woman in my life, sort of way :-) When said attacker is release on early parole, it all goes to hell and back, and Gabe is not only fighting to keep his woman, to for her very life too.

This book is dark in places, lighter, funnier in others, it has the whole gammut of emotion, all in a short book, which meant, at times, it flew, far too fast, and others it plodded along just right.

Gabe is Belle's first relationship, first proper boyfriend since the first one doesn't count, and its all very new to her. She is also suffering from cancer and the treatment and all that entails. Gabe, once he knows, is there every step of the way. Then there is her attacker, getting in touch and doing all he does to scare her. She has a lot on her plate, and I just thought, at more than one point, "give the girl a damn break!"

Its written in the first person, present tense and dual POV. That way is my absolute worse way to be written, and you know this. I can't forgive it here, I really can't. Also, although its written from dual POV, you get far more of Belle than we do of Gabe.

A good book, just not a great one. (SORRY!)

This was the first book I've read By Jean Kelso and I really enjoyed it. Belle and Gabe have an interesting story. Belle has a pretty big obstacle to overcome and Gabe is just what she needs to help her through it. I like that she wasn't the typical size2, young, model like heroine. Belle was very relatable. I like how she was damaged but still strong. She had a little self doubt at time like we all do but still got help when she needed it. The sex scenes were hot but not over the top. Mel was a great supporting character and I can't wait to read more from her, especially after that epilogue.
Great job!

Honest review for an ARC- 4 stars is a bit generous, it was more a 3.5 star book. Had great potential, but whoever the editor was really was slacking on the job. The missing words and errors that I found were very distracting to me. I found Gabe to be a bit stalkerish in the beginning, and with Belle's history things progressed a little to quickly for me. I saw much improvement in the flow of Miss Kelso's writing. Overall I did enjoy the book, and the building of book 2.

I enjoyed the book. It was dark in some places and sexy and entertaining in others.

I was gifted the book for an honest review.

Belles story is one of bad luck on top of more bad luck and trauma but she overcomes trials with the help of her best friend and new man gabe. I wish their would have been more from gabes pov and it was a little predictable but overall I give the book 5 stars and really enjoyed it. Looking forward to the next one!

I liked this book. It has good writing and it flows really well. I like the strength of the characters and I feel like Belle had a very believable history. She is so hard on herself in the beginning of the book that I want to pet her and love her and call her George ;) If you get that reference, then 10 points for you. LOL Anyways, this poor girl has so much happen to her in a short space of time that it’s ridiculous. It’s a wonder any one would have come out of that situation sane much less open to love. Belle and Gabe have a very whirlwind romance and I almost wonder if it’s because of the events that transpire and push them together more than actually falling in love, if that’s makes any sense. I’m sure there’s a technical term for it but it’s eluding me right this minute.

The one thing that bothers me is that the reader never learns very much about Gabe. The whole story is centered on the trials and tribulations that Belle has to go through and Gabe is just a really hot accessory. He starts to get interesting with his sexual taste but then it just kind of gets dismissed and is mentioned once in passing.

*sigh* I was hoping for a little elaboration on this but the sex scenes are very, very nice and descriptive. I got that nice tense feeling in the pit of my stomach when you read a really great sex scene. I am interested what will happen in the next book because this one leaves off with a cliffhanger concerning Belle’s best friend and a secret that she has.

I’m going to leave this one with 4 stars because I wanted more Gabe time and also because the relationship moved a little fast for me.

I was given a copy by the author for an honest review.

Poor Belle, everything it seems like on her thirtieth birthday her life just went on this downward spiral. Then she meets hunky Gabe who she doesn't feel like she is good enough for because he's Mr. Hunk and she considers herself fat and ugly. No worries, he's had his eye on her for months in a sweet bordering on stalker kind of way. He sticks with her through a cancer diagnosis and treatment then a psycho ex boyfriend just released from prison coming after her.

I enjoyed this book. My biggest complaint is she did have SO much bad stuff happening at one time it seemed a bit too much. Can't a Girl get a break? Other than that I found the characters to be real and believable. I like books that have real people with normal every day jobs doing things regular people do every day and this fit the bill.

I'm looking forward to the next book in the series.

I was given an ARC for an honest review and honestly I LOVED IT!! There was a part at the beginning that almost made me not read it because it was too close for comfort (family member had it) and I really don't like reading books with this illness. However, I went on and so glad I did! Belle has had her share of bad things happen to her in her life and then when Gabe shows interest in her she thinks no way would a hot guy like that have any interest in her. After all she's not stick thin like what most hot guys seem to want! Gabe goes above and beyond to convince her she's beautiful and sticks with her for every step of this story!! There's mystery, sadness, sex and happiness in this book! A must read, for sure! Unfortunately, it's a cliffhanger book! Looking forward to reading Circumstances #2!

Holy Cow

I wasn't sure what to expect when I began reading this story, but WOW. If you enjoy romantic suspense, then you need to buy this book and read it right now.

I absolutely love these characters. The location is ambiguous enough that it could be in any city. I love stories that allow me to picture myself in them. The story provides mostly Belle's POV, but we also get short looks into Gabe's head as well. It's written in first person, which isn't my preferred, but the story hooked me in and I didn't get bogged down by it. I had planned to read the book over a couple of days, but every time I put it down, I had to pick it right back up.

In addition, I have to tell you, I just loved the strength and fragility of Belle and the controlling sweetness of Gabe. They're one of my new favorite couples.

Wow! This book was amazing! I loved Jean Kelso's first book, One Simple Memory, but I loved this so much more! Gabe and Belle had an instant connection. No matter the obstacles from Belle's past, or her medical problems, Gabe never strays, even when she puts herself down and tries to push him away because she doesn't think she is good enough for him. Gabe becomes her rock, her protector, and her everything. Will he be able to stop her past from catching up to her and harming her? Will Gabe's love be enough to help her through a difficult time? I can't wait for the next book in this series, to find out what happens next with Gabe and Belle, and what happens when sparks fly between Jack and Mel. Fantastic book, Jean Kelso!!

LOVED IT!

The suspense was incredible, the sex scenes hot but not uncomfortably so! (I'm kind of a prude)

My heart goes out to Belle, so deeply. She suffered a trauma no one should have to, only to have it rear its ugly head again years later.

You don't learn much about Mel in this story, but she is an outstanding friend, and one any girl would be lucky to have.

This book made me swoon and gave me a touch of anxiety. I wouldn't put it high on my list of suspense faves, but as a romantic thriller I kind of dig it.

I would absolutely recommend this book to everyone! So.freaking.good!

OMG what a fantastic read, love story, insecurities after a painful trauma, friendship, trust, fear, anger to name but a few emotions, you will love these characters and your heart will melt, beautifully written and plenty of steady action but the steamy sessions are Hot especially knowing what Belle went through, you will definitely not be disappointed with this, I received this free for my honest review and hand on heart I can't wait for the next one

Fast-paced, sexy, easy read. Although a bit predictable, the story was good and I liked the characters. Poor Belle has had to deal with a lot of terrible things in her life, but Gabe is able to be her hero. I didn't realize this was going to be a SEXY story...so that caught me a bit off guard, but it was GOOD. Not too much, but enough to want it to happen again. ;) Overall, it's a good story that is well written. Will be watching for Mel and Jack's story!

We meet Belle who has been through the mill and you just want her to have some luck in her life after what life has been thrown at her. Luckily the lovely Gabe comes along and supports her through thick and thin. This book has some dark places as well as light moment's.

This book throws so many emotions. A painful trauma, friendship, the learning of trust, fear and anger

Just the right amount of tension

I was given a free copy of the book in exchange for a honest review. I'm not normally a fan of the tense thriller type of story but this one worked for me. The characters and situations were realistic enough that I was able to be invested in everything that happened and also believe it could be happening. Plus it only took me a few hours to read, once I started I just didn't want to stop. Really great way to spend an afternoon, now I need the next one :)

Received a copy for my honest review for Fallen for Books Reviewers.

Controlling Circumstances by Jean Kelso is the first book in the Circumstances series. There was something about this book that drew me in from the beginning. From the first page I did not want to put it down and I finished it in less than a day! It was great!

Belle is a nurse who has lived through some tough years and even more tough situations. The story begins on her thirtieth birthday where she gets even more bad news. After receiving the news, she decides to put it behind her for one night and goes out on the town with her best friend and their group. Little does she know that is the night she will meet the one guy who changes everything.

Gabe spends the night at the bar staring at Belle. When she takes a moment to go to the restroom, he takes his opportunity to have a taste. He quickly finds out one taste is not enough. Although that night doesn’t end how he might have thought it would, he continues to show his interest in her (much to her dismay).

The story follows Belle and Gabe’s developing relationship and begs the question whether it can survive Belle’s past coming back to haunt her. Can Gabe really protect her? Although she trusts Gabe with everything that she has, is the trouble from her past too smart, too determined?

Although it appears the second story in the series is not directly about Belle and Gabe, this story does end on a bit of cliffhanger and I would be lying if I said I wasn’t looking forward to Losing Control!

Wow! How many times do we all wish for a man to simply arrive into our lives and rearrange all our emotions from orderly to chaos, and here he was all this time....Gabe.
Like so many women, Belle places little value on herself based on her own perception of her beauty and attraction, little realising that men like Gabe look at her and see so much more.
Even more heady is the self control that slips away from Gabe. There's nothing more fabulous for a woman; a vulnerable woman, to see a beautiful, magnetic Alpha male loose his self control by her means.
And in continued Alpha fashion, Gabe shows his true colours when Belle needed him. He didn't falter or step back.
Belle's heartbreaking sadness is eased by Gabe's presence. His ability to take control, to remove her barriers and soothe her soul.
Gabe's calculated risks over Mike may seem extreme for Belle, but it is the only means to an end of her nightmares. But she puts all her trust in Gabe and he proves his worth.
There are so many emotional passages throughout this book, catching your breath and sucking you in, but with spiced and charged love scenes intertwined within their journey. I absolutely loved this book, it was a pleasure to read and I am a huge fan of this author. I can't wait for her next book, I am hoping it's Mel and Jack's story, their introduction in this book and whetted my appetite and I need to know more!!
Can't recommend this highly enough!

I had such high hopes for this one but it is a hot mess. There is SO much going on and the writing is just bouncing all over the place. Have you ever seen a young child with ADHD scrambling around... Jumping on the couch one minute and then climbing a book shelf the next, that's just before flushing your favorite lipstick down the toilet??? Well that's how this book is written.
The relationship between the characters is totally unrealistic and forced. I'm not huge on instant romance... But this is kind of creepy stalker material.

When I arrived at Gabe's first passage, that's when I had to throw in the towel.

I occasionally come across books that I just can't click with, but this one... It's not that I'm having a hard time getting into it... I just can't deal with a "let's throw everything but the kitchen sink in the first quarter" all over the place, kind of book.
Not to mention the last make out passage, I was just about ready to skip, when Gabe's pulled back.
I mean it classier than "cheesy" but not by much.

This was my first read by Jean Kelso.
Thank you for the opportunity to read this book. Unfortunately I will not be finishing it.

Belle has had it rough...an unloving upbringing, a dream boyfriend who turned into a nightmare, and new health issues. However, Belle is a strong woman who has come through these circumstances a strong woman. On the night of her birthday, her friend Mel takes her to a local bar for drinking and dancing. That is the night her life takes another turn because she meets Gabe. Little does Belle know that Gabe has been watching her for months and convinced Mel to bring Belle to the bar so he could meet her. As they begin a relationship, Belle's past threatens to destroy it. With Gabe, Mel, and Gabe's friend Jack by her side Belle gathers her strength to regain control of her life. This book was an emotional roller coaster the entire story. I felt the hurt and self-doubt that Belle felt. I felt the pain of possibly not protecting loved ones that Gabe and Mel felt. This book had me on the edge of my seat from page one! I have read all of Jean Kelso's books and have loved them so much that I have purchased hard copies of them and they now grace my bookshelf. If you are looking for an romantic suspense story, look no further than Controlling Circumstances!

I loved this book. This story is full of twists and turns. This book is Romance and suspense. There are some dark spots in this story and some love and entertainment. The author put me on a roller-coaster ride with my emotions.

I love the characters Gabe and Belle are easy to love. Belle has a lot going on with health and stuff from her past.

Gabe is awesome, no matter how hard Belle tries to push him away, he is always there. He is very protective of her. Will he be able keep her past from catching up and hurting her? Will he be able to help her though a very hard time, or will she win in the end and push him away? I look forward to reading the next book in this series. Thank you Jean for taking me on the ride!

I loved Bella! She is an averaged sized woman with real issues, some that most people can relate to, such as being self conscious of her body shape. I loved watching her overcome obstacles with the help of Gabe and her wonderful best friend Mel. Can't wait to read the next book and see what happens next to Mel, Jack, Bella and Gabe!

Gabe and Belle have an intriguing story. It's been awhile since I've read this genre of book. It was refreshing to read. Hot sex scenes and great story. Gabe is damn sexy! Belle has been thru a lot in her past. Can Gabe be the one she can let in? Fall for? Have a hea with? Guess you will have to read to find out!
