Deeper Grace

Rate this book
Deeper Grace is the kind of book that can sweep through an entire congregation and bring new growth. It will re-awaken a desire to dive deeper again into the mystery of God's grace. Churches spend money on sound systems and coffee bars. Good sound and good coffee are great, but what the world is desperately seeking is a people full of grace. Deeper Grace helps you discover the source of all growth in Jesus, and the foundations of life with Christ. God’s grace is the wellspring of spiritual formation, but we have shortened “Grace” to mean only forgiveness. We need a greater grace. Deeper Grace reminds us again of the wealth of Heaven available to every student of Jesus.

Grace is a subject that the church loves to talk about but rarely gets right. But reading this book was like cold water on a burn; it cleansed while it relieved the pain. If you are a Christian, you should know this stuff, but in the rat race that is American life, it's easy to shift to survival mode, and when you are in survival mode, grace slips out the door. But this book is much much more than a reminder of what grace is; it is a fresh look at grace with wise experienced eyes, something not easy to pull off. Read the chapter about the parable of the loaves and the fishes and you will walk away thinking that it was like you read that parable for the first time.

We all need to understand and walk in grace, and this is a book to help you go deeper. If I were a person of means, I would buy it for my entire church. Churches spend money on sound systems and coffee bars, and I like sound systems and coffee bars. But what I long for, and what the world is desperately seeking, are a people full of grace. A church that gets ahold of this message will change the lives of the community they are planted in, and that is what will change the world. Don't miss this book.

I kept this book at my desk at work and read a little when I needed to hear something good. It was highly effective in that capacity. When I needed to remember that my co-workers had their own set of insecurities and joys, I read a little. When I felt defeated, I read a little. It's interesting that this isn't a self-help book or an enthusiastic marching charge, but it both helped and invigorated me. It put my focus back where it needed to be: on the author of grace.

The book is divided into small chapters that easily digest in a few minutes. I consider it good seasoning for my life, and I'm happy to have read it. I'm sure I'll come back to it.
