When Dusk Falls

Rate this book
Nineteen-year-old Dane Chandler rode away from his father’s grave with one intention – to kill the man who had murdered him over a maverick yearling. As he left behind his home, his place on the Branson Ranch and, most importantly, the girl he had planned to marry, his father’s best friend left him with a prophecy and a light, ‘The time will come when you will see the error of this decision. You will be lost in an endless night, but dusk comes before the night, Dane remember that. Before the night, when dusk falls, remember the way home.’ The next two years found Dane living the life of a gunfighter, hired gun, and professional gambler. Then came the day in Denver when he found himself lost in that endless night and knew it was time to put up the gun and go home, yet it was not to be that easy. There was still one more fight and the final showdown with the man who had once been his partner and his best friend.

I have been a writer of adventure novels of the Old West. I have now branched out to writing contemporary crime novels with a suspense/mystery base. What I feel makes these unique is that they are set in the modern West and Alaska, as opposed to exotic world and big city settings. They involve average people and local law enforcement agencies.

My writing influence comes from my ancestral roots. Mountain men, voyageurs, pioneers, and explorers make up the branches of my family tree. My paternal grandfather was Blackfoot Indian from Montana. My maternal grandfather was a Minnesota lumberjack, both men were born in the 1800’s.

As a lifelong outdoorsman I have inherited that pioneer blood and followed in the footsteps of both my families. I have experienced life in the Alaska bush, as well as the wilderness of the Rocky and Cascade Mountains, as a working cowboy, guide, horsepacker, hunter, and trapper.
I also spent several years as a Colorado Deputy Sheriff. This experience in the law enforcement field allows me an intimate insight to the system that I weave into my new crime genre stories.
I incorporate all of my experiences into my stories to ingrain them with authenticity and draw the reader into the story by their realism and a personal knowledge of the people and lifestyle involved.

I have near to 500 fiction and non-fiction works published. Included are: 19 novels and short story collections, 70 short stories, and inclusion in 18 anthologies. I am the first 3 time winner of the Will Rogers Medallion Award, in 2008 for Best Western Fiction, and again in 2013 for Best Western Humor, and 2014 for Best Western Novel. Nine of my short stories have earned Reader’s Choice Awards.

A DPF. Wyoming Western Action Adventure (WDF)

DPF. has penned a Wyoming western action adventure titled "When Dusk Falls" which begins with a ranch owner being murdered and the son finding and killing the murderer. The young man then hits the trail and becomes known as a gun-fighter. He and his partner move from gun-fighters job to gun-fighting job until the partner crosses the line and becomes a cold blooded killer. The young man returns to the ranch to find everything had changed. This is an excellent read for the genre.....DEHS

When Dusk Falls

As a devoted fan of Dave P. Fisher, one would think that after reading approximately 13 of his books, a reader would need a change of material. Finishing this book, I sat back, refreshing my memories of what I had just mentally devoured. I found that, despite the fact that what I read was in the past, the past is still today. Good & bad, honor & courage. The stories that Mr. Fisher writes, are as restorative as the air after a cleansing rain.

Wow!

This was an exceptional story! The journey in the making of a young man, from innocence to someone fighting for justice for innocent folks. This was riveting!

This was a good book, well written and thought out. The author did a good job of describing the characters and leaving a message.

Insightful and intense

Despite a very awkward and contrived beginning (the only reason I didn't rate it a five star) this book turned into a really good read.
