Nomfiction is far more than a collection of essays about meals and recipes. It’s about the power of food. The power to bring people together, evoke memories (both good and bad), define who we are and where we come from. It’s such a diverse collection, and one of the things I loved about it was its subtle exploration of the role food plays in different families and cultures. There’s a Persian father and daughter, bonding over a pomegranate, sharing rarely told stories of long-gone days in Iran; a young Canadian father trying to emulate his Peruvian mother’s ceviche-making skills in place of grilled cheese; a woman processing her mother’s death with a procession of Midwestern American neighborly casseroles. Whatever one’s background—German, Indian, Nigerian, Icelandic—the message is clear: food is not only life-, but also soul-sustaining, and it’s a blessing to have it on the table.

I'm biased, since I wrote one of the pieces in this book, but I think this is an incredibly powerful, diverse collection of food-based essays. You'll never look at dinner the same way again.

Great read. Nonfiction pieces about food, great mix of styles and approaches to the topic.
