HOW WELL DO YOU REALLY KNOW THE ONES YOU LOVE? HOW WELL DO YOU KNOW YOURSELF? ..." Paul woke from the nightmare sweating and gasping. He couldn't believe it, but he'd actually shed a few tears. Images he could not quite recall flitted around his thoughts like dark songbirds. Something red. Something wet and heavy. He tried to stop his heart from throwing itself against his chest like a caged animal... He could feel the presence of someone else in their home..." Paul Kenner, a rising star in the world of historical war novels, has just moved in to his dream home. Everything is finally falling into place for him and his wife Jen; that is, until writer's block sets in. When he begins writing a disturbing, yet childish horror novel, flying though the pages far faster than he'd ever worked on his books before, he doesn't want to believe that anything is wrong. Yet it's hard to ignore the thing in the woods near his home. The old thing, the wicked thing... the thing that's been calling him closer. The thing that calls him "friend."
Allred is a something of a Renascence artist. A poet, visual artist, comic writer, cartoonist, singer-songwriter, comedy improviser, and more, he narrowly avoids the cliche of being a "jack of all trades and master of none" by focusing his efforts first and foremost in the field of literary horror novels.

Recently, his first horror book TOMORROW I WILL KILL AGAIN has launched, and many other books are on their way, including BLOCKS OF COLOR, EYES OF THE ASPENS, and UN. He is also the author of the experimental sci-fi novel CAELEN AMERICA.
In the tradition of his favorite authors, he hopes to keep you up at night and give you something to think about.
The book started off well and I was looking forward to an interesting read. Unfortunately, the more I read, the more I felt I was reading a poor execution of a mix of various Stephen King novels (The Dark Towers series especially comes to mind). King's influence is obvious here but this story ended up disjointed and the intrigue dies quickly....even though the book goes on, and on, and on...The story could have been wrapped up in half the number of pages and there were many instances of dialogues that added nothing to the story that could have been skipped altogether. It is clear to me what the author was trying to piece together but it really didn't read well. There were also some grammatical issues and inconsistencies (referring to the same character alternatively as Mitchel and Mitchell). While these didn't bother me much, I felt I should point it out as I know it is an important issue for many readers. The biggest problem I had with the book is as long winded as it was, in the end, it offered a less than adequate conclusion to a mostly confusing story. It wraps up in about two pages and leaves the reader with no idea of how things ended up the way they are. The writing isn't bad and if you enjoy supernatural stories with not much suspense, you might enjoy the read. For me, this was a good idea that ended up botched as if the author was trying to cram too many ideas all in one book and not succeeding at making them work together.
This book ponders some big questions, such as where our darker desires come from. The setting and characters are wonderfully imagined and feel very real. In particular, I enjoyed the relationship between Paul and his wife. While their actual problems are not of this world, the way they tend to handle them feels very real, grounded, and emotional.
The story itself takes some interesting turns, unfolding in a way I didn't expect when I first started reading. Overall, I recommend this book if you are looking for a horror novel to introduce you to the genre, but you'll also enjoy it if you've read horror before. You'll recognize the influence of Stephen King, which is enjoyable for the uninitiated and veterans of horror alike.
As a simple narrative, this is a great book! It is an engaging, frightening, full-of-surprises page-turner. That in and of itself makes this a great book. But it's more than just an entertaining story. It connects the reader with the characters. It makes people look at themselves and the decisions they make. Highly highly recommended read! I've read a few things by this author, Matthew Allred. I can't wait for more of his stuff!
Persevered with this to the end cos I hate to give up on a book but not my kind of book at all. Very confusing and it was a struggle to get through it.
Errrrm. Where to start?! I never really leave a negative review,I have authors and tropes well chosen for my likes/dislikes..... This book sounded intriguing, looked right up my street! At around 340 pages, it was enough to sink my teeth into!
HOWEVER the whole book felt like hard work. There was no consistent flow, as soon as something started picking up the POV switched in a way that made me lose interest. Struggled through to the end because I can't have a DNF pile.
SO many typos too! Reading this on the kindle so I reported them. Shocking!
At over 300 pages I felt like this story suffered a bit from bloating. If it was a bit more concise then I think that the story would have been more concentrated and less random.
The first part of the book had me invested. Yeah, it has the well know plot of a writer being wrapped up in something supernatural, but in these days what book is 100% unique. Plus, Allred doesn't make this a carbon copy of a Stephen King book (like few have suggested), he's made the story his own.
There are a couple of instances in the first part when the book did creep me out a bit. Especially a part with Sean (no spoilers).
I was very interested in what happened next.
The book went a bit wonky after that unfortunately, for me anyway. It seemed like there was just too much happening that it lost it's effect a bit. Plus, the sudden Supervillian appearance involving police really didn't work for me. Too much, too quickly.
After that I kind of got back into it.
I know people tend to hate endings in general, and this one wasn't bad, it was just a bit abrupt. It would have been nice to have a little bit more information on what actually happened.
Overall I enjoyed the book, it did become a bit of a slog part way through, but the solid start very much kept me going and I've glad I got to the end.
I'll definitely read any more horror that Allred writes.
I would recommend this to newbies to horror, as it's not that scary and it's kind of verging on thriller. And to horror enthusiasts, some parts are pretty interesting, something a bit different.
Mmmmm This book really was hit and miss for me, well, more miss really. The idea was good. But around halfway through, my attention started to wander and I found the story odd and unconnected. Sorry, I hate to leave bad reviews.
I have spent the last 12 hours trying to come up with the words in my mind to describe this book. If leaving the reader speechless was the author's intention, he did an amazing job, but in a very negative way. The book pulls you in in the beginning, but before the halfway point the reader is left bored and tired of the bloody, violent, Mormon psychobabble, none of which made any sense to me at all. I am a binge reader, meaning it is not unusual for me to sit down and read an entire book series in one night, but this book took me nearly a month to complete. It did not hold my attention, but I forced myself to complete it because I refuse to give up on a book. It seemed to me as though the author was committed in the beginning, but that the end was merely a rush for completion that he was no longer personally invested in. Aside from the fact that it helped me sleep, I feel the time spent with this book was a total waste, and I have NEVER felt that way about a book, as words are my dominant passion in life. To the author: I apologize for my unkind words about your work, but I made a promise to myself to always be honest in my reviews.
When I first started reading this, it reminded me of a Stephen King book. This is a very long book.. Almost too long. I wouldn't have felt the extensive length if the book had wrapped up in a less confusing way. The more I think about this book, the more confused I get. I'm not a fan of this conclusion.
Great book, great story. I you like Stephen King and James Herbert this book is for you. Gets a bit strange at the end but well worth sticking with it.
So this book ended up being completely pointless? The ending was nonsensical. An good book ruined by a terrible ending and horribly errors. What a waste of time.
