Five Brave Explorers – Great Black Heros by Wade Husdon Illustrator Ron Garnett - Children’s Illustrated Picture Book- (1) Esteban Dorantes, (1500-1539) King Ferdinand of Spain planned to locate Florida, USA. He sent 5 ships with army men, settlors and adventurous Spaniards. Ship started in February, 1527. Esteban Dorantes belonged to Morocco, Africa. He was a slave with Andress. In April, 1528 they reached Florida. 300 of the strongest men reached the shore on a boat. Villagers from Village Apalachen fought with them with bows and arrows. They had to run away and save their lives. However, as they did not find their ships, they constructed 5 boats and moved. They crossed Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana. A few of them died. Ultimately, 5 of them were captured by Kapocuis tribe. They lived for 5 years as captives. Andress Dorantes, Alfonso Del Castillo Maldonaldo, Cabejja D Veca and Esteban Dorantes. During this period, Esteban Dorantes learnt the way to Spanish village in Mexico. He also learnt what food was available in that area. All 5 ran away from captivity and in 1530 they reached Mexico. Here they informed about the new places they had found. Dorentes sold Esteban Dorantes to the Governor of Mexico. Governor order Esteban Dorantes to begin another adventure journey. He found out Arizona and New Mexico. Esteban Dorantes died during this expedition. (2) Jean Baptiste Pointe DuSable (1745-1818) DuSable was son of a French father and Negro slave. After death of his mother, DuSable was educated in France. He learnt French, Spanish and English. At the age of 20 he came to Haiti. With his friend Jaques Clamorgan, they moved by boat to America. They reached New Orleans. He shifted to Dusebal, Fort Paeoria, Illinois for trading animal hide. He married Katihawa who belonged to Potawatomi tribe. In 1799 he established a trading post in Ashicago which was located between St Louis and Montreal, Canada. In 1800, DuSable sold his trading post area for $ 18000 to Jean Lalimae. John Kinzi was witness to this transfer of property document. DuSable returned to Peoria, Illinois where he purchased 800 -acre land. After death of his wife he shifted to Missouri. He expired in 1818. Today the area established by him is known as Chicago. In 1968, it was accepted that DuSable has established Chicago. (3) James Pierce Beckwourth (1798- 1866) was born in Fredrick county, Virginia. When he was 8- year old his parents shifted to St Louis, Missouri. He learnt trade of Hammersmith. He joined General William Henry Ashley who hunted and caught animals. DuSable located in west California from Sierra Nevada to Long Valley. for all. He sold animals and their skin. DuSable became a Frontiersman. He fought many battles for his master. He travelled to New Mexico, Arizona, Florida, Montana. He expired in 1866. (4) Matthew A. Henson (1866-1955) Henson was a North Pole explorer. In 1909, Henson, Admiral Pierre, Robert Harriet moved for North Pole expedition. Base camp was established in Camp Columbia, Canada. They had to travel 450 miles by sledge run by dogs. Henson was one of the 4 Inuit guides for this exploration. Henson reached North Pole before team members. Later Admiral Pierre and others reached North Pole. Henson is seen carrying the US Flag on North Pole. (5) Mae C. Jemison, Space Explorer born 1956. Mae was born in Decatur, Georgia. At the age of 16-years she completed High School and got a scholarship for Stanford University. She completed her Medical studies. In 1985 she applied to NASA for her candidature as space traveler. In August, 1987, she was selected for training for 1- year. She joined Adventurer space ship in 1991. Such books are educative and encouraging for young minds. Coloured pictures illustrations are helpful to reader to associate with the text. I have read this book in Hindi language.

Excellent picture book summary reviews of each life, would serve as good springboards to finding more in-depth biographies about each person. Richly illustrated throughout, covers past explorers to modern times at NASA. It isn’t strictly about only people born in North America but they all made significant impacts to the continent. Good for all ages, but particularly good for practicing emergent readers!

Interesting, engaging, and educational. I enjoyed the inclusion of photographs, maps, and charts as well. Written with simple, straightforward language to make everything easy to understand. I had fun learning about these people. ^_^

a great book for black history month that will introduce young kids to some figures that they might not learn about otherwise. i loved the last one about Mae Jemison the most.

Excellent selection of mini biographies. Covers five explores all the way back to the 16th century. This was a unique set of people who were vital to development of the western world but are rarely heard about in the history books (three of the people in this book I had never heard of before). This book also does a nice job of exploring the lives of the explorers in chronological order. A good read that led me to want to learn more about these five explorers.
