Ex Ops #3

Sweet Agony

Rate this book
Beware of falling in love with the boy across the street.

Disappearing from their dangerous life in Chicago, Ginny and her mother went from riches to rags by way of a new life in the sleepy, rural suburbs of New York. Under the illusion of safety, Ginny blossomed into a beautiful young woman with hopes and dreams for a future her mother was determined she would have.

Lucas Young, her best friend’s oldest brother, was the dashing hero in all of her dreams. The man she fantasized about sweeping her off her feet and giving her the happily ever after she had only heard about in her mother’s fairytales.

Sometimes, reality wasn’t what we wanted it to be, though.

What would happen when Ginny found out Lucas wasn’t her Prince Charming after all? Instead, he was a rough and tumble soldier in extremely tarnished armor who had a propensity to break her heart.

Maybe happily ever after wasn’t meant for everyone.

Warning: This is the first book in a three-part serial spin-off from the Ex Ops Series. Each of the three books will feature a piece of Lucas & Ginny's story and leads directly into the next installment. IN OTHER WORDS, THIS STORY ENDS ON A CLIFFHANGER. Also, be forewarned this story will make you laugh, cry, and possibly throw your e-reader at the wall. ;)

Ahhh...Jessie Lane does it to me agony. I always enjoy reading her books because she manages to weave together compelling, engaging, and sexy to create a story that if full contact and full throttle. And, Sweet Agony was no different.

The story has a lot of time jumps from the past to the present to show how the main protagonist's, Lucas and Ginny, relationship started, evolved, and then crashed and burned ... maybe. The story is definitely intense and just as you're holding out hope that things will shift for Ginny...BAM...CLIFFHANGER! Now don't let that make you shy away from this story because the telling of it was amazing. Although it is part of a three book serial, Sweet Agony was well told at almost 200 pages and definitely teases you into wanting more.

So, the agony was indeed sweet. I cannot wait to see what Lane does with the remainder of this series because there is a rather serious backstory that I am certain will impact any relationship between the characters. Boy it's gonna be gooooood!

Sweet Mother of Mercy, author Jessie Lane what are you trying to do to me? I will happily admit I am not a fan of serials. I don't like them, I always feel like they are unnecessary and they always cut off at the best part. I would much rather have a whole book.

But it has been such a long time since I last read a book from the Ex Op Series and I have been waiting for Lucas's book. I've seriously missed this series. That even though Lucas's book was split up into a serial, I had to jump on the chance to read it, even if it was just a part of it.

I have to say this first part is really about getting to know Lucas and Ginny. Getting to know what happened with them. So what does that mean? Well it means that most of this part was of the past. Does that mean I liked it any less? No it doesn't. I love finding out more about character's. I feel like with this we get to really know how Lucas and Ginny were. We got to know how they were together. As opposed to how they are now.

I loved Lucas. I thought he was sweet and caring. You could tell how much he liked Ginny. But he struggled with being a little bit older than her. I almost felt like the age issue for him was a bit much at times. I mean I understood where he was coming from.

Oh Ginny. I really liked Ginny. Well I liked the younger sweeter, more caring Ginny. Though the older drunk Ginny made me laugh. It was interesting to see basically the two different Ginny's. You wouldn't have thought they were the same person.

I really enjoyed reading this first part, yes even though its a serial. I laughed and cried, and at points I wanted to jump into the story and shake some sense into Ginny and Lucas. I really can't wait to find out what will happen next. And oh boy, I can't believe Mrs. Lane had to end right where she did. Oh wait, yes I can..... The next part can't come soon enough!!!!

I'm giving Sweet Agony 4 Stars Out of 5 and can't wait for more!!!!!

***I received an arc of this book from the author for my honest review***

As a rule I normally tend to LOATHE cliffhangers. Mainly because of where the writers place said cliffy and the bones of the story written.

That being said, Sweet Agony is my idea of a PERFECT cliffhanger. It left off at a pivotal moment but left you satisfied. You can take this break between books to really digest the previous story. That is EXACTLY what Jessie Lane accomplished. Had she compressed everything that this trilogy into one book, it would be so long and detailed that I believe a lot of readers might give up on it. Which would be a crying shame because they would be doing an injustice to themselves.

Sweet Agony is the back story of the tumultuous journey between Ginny and Lucas that spans two decades. You will follow them via split POVs which is ideal since there is so much depth in both the story and characters.

This is my confession: I want book 2 and I want it now. Well done, Jessie!

Received an ARC for an honest review. This is the first book of the spin off series for Ex Ops. Jessie Lane gave me a book that kept my interest with a few tears and some laughter. She gives you a full journey with Ginny and Lucas. These two have decisions that are tough to make but can only have hope in the end. Taking this journey with these two is an adventure into the past and moves into the present. Sweet Agony is a fabulous read and Jessie Lane will leave you wanting more that is a sure thing. Fantastic writing, outstanding story and characters to love. Can Lucas be a fortune teller to Ginny? Hmmm? I can't wait to find out. Love it and I am looking forward to more.

I was so looking forward to this book. Lots of flashback chapters mixed with present day, not a big fan of this. Just wasn't very impressed, i thought Ginny would have been better moving on from Lucas, he's an idiot.

Sweet Agony by Jessie Lane
I received this book for an honest review.
So I am going to start this by saying when Jessie told me she was writing Lucas and Ginny’s story I wanted to throat punch her BECAUSE my baby daddy Dec needs to tell his story. So as Jessie was writing I was consoling Dec that he will get his story told soon. Then Jessie says it three books….well there wasn’t enough alcohol in the world for that stunner. So me and my future baby daddy drank our tears away……..So when I opened Lucas and Ginny’s book I was ready to kick butt and take names for these two to get their crap together…then Jessie shocked the heck outta me by writing a SWEET LOVE STORY!! WHAT!! Who is this woman and what happened to my blow torch torturing woman? When did she get a soft side? Did someone change her medication??
Ok Lucas is Mr. Brooding. He has his heart locked up tight and only one woman will be able to control it. He has kept his sweet Ginny at triple arms length away for as long as he can remember. First it was gross this little girl liked him THAT way and then it was because he LIKED her that way and she was jail bait.
Ginny looked to Lucas as her knight in shining armor. He protected her and cared for her which confused the heck out of her. He was so back and forth about his emotions that Ginny often thought she made up the soft side of Mr. Young when in fact she hadn’t.
Book one of this story is super SWEET and angsty. We are reading how the puppy love turned real life love for Lucas and Ginny. We find out what happened to make them fall apart and her build giant castle sized walls so that NO Knight can climb them and bring her hurt like Lucas did.
We find out why Ginny and her mom were hiding and the monster that finds them……and after looking for lost people for 16 years…….lets just say Daddy isn’t happy at all!!
Book 2 is going to be awesome just by the way book 2 ended…….

I was warned… Jessie Lane said it would end in a cliffhanger and I thought I was prepared. I wasn’t.

Lucas and Ginny are my new best friends. I need them in my life. I want to know more about them and if they manage to find each other. Can they be each other’s happily ever after? These two are absolutely perfect. I respect Lucas so much for how much for how he treats Ginny. As kids he realizes what their age difference means to them and to those around them. He is mature for his age with that thinking. Ginny, shy Ginny, she just wants to be around, near, next to, with Lucas. She can’t see what their age difference means yet she knows that their time will come. Until…maybe it doesn’t. I can’t tell you what happens but know that it happens and it was amazing.
I am hopeful for what is yet to come in their story. Their plan has been set off the intended track and I am excited for what could be. I am also scared. So scared for Ginny and the life she is living right now. I pray that she will stay safe. I can feel her fear and her pain in what is happening to her right now. She can’t even think that Lucas can help her.

The fact that this is a three part story is wonderful. I need more, but I love that their story will be fulfilling. There will be an entire story, eventually. I pray (and I will stalk) Jessie Lane will not keep us waiting too long.

From how this first book went I am assuming the three books in this series are going to be the past, present and future of lives of Lucas and Ginny.

We’ve know Lucas since the start of the Ex Ops series. Knew he was brooding over the one that had gotten away. This book gives us what happened between and to Lucas and Ginny from when he was 9 and she 7 up until he is 30 and she 27. It actually ends where book 2 in the series left off. So main purpose here was to show us the intense love these two had for each other when they were kids but it had been doomed from the start first with their ages, second with Lucas not wanting to make her have to suffer during all of his deployments and third with the past coming back and yanking Ginny and her mom back into hell. For 5 years Lucas has had no clue where Ginny disappeared to. He still doesn’t know at the end of this book but we the reader do and with that we also know it’s not going to be an easy road for these two to get to a happily ever after.

Can't wait until the books out!!!

Sweet Agony is a great read! It has great characters and plenty of back story. Taste of sweet first love, heart break, regrets and hope. Everything needed for a great romance. Throw in a hot alpha ops agent and you have the recipe for a read I couldn't put down. A glimpse of some old friends and it totals excellent read. Not a dull moment. Great read and great job. Bring on the next one.

A pretty good start *minor SPOILERS*

**Update: I ended up reading the next book. Don’t waste your time starting this serial. It is so unbelievably unrealistic and cheesy I was sitting there shaking my head and scoffing at most of the book. Not going to bother with the third book. **

This is a pretty good start to a three part serial surrounding the love between Lucas and Ginny. This first part of their love story deals mostly with them as young adults. Both are cute characters and I liked seeing them grow into adults and how the mistakes they made shaped who they became.

HOWEVER, I think the big moment that finally pushed Ginny to give up on Lucas was terrible.

Other than this, the book was pretty decent. It’s a fairly quick read but definitely has some cheesy moments and writing but I can overlook them for the most part. Happy reading!

This book is totally titled appropriately!! This story was sooo sweet but the agony these characters go through is just heartbreaking. This book tells the story of what leads up to the club scene at the end of book 2. And as much as I had a hard time working my way through some of the repeats at the beginning of the story, it was definitely needed for the full effect of Ginny and Lucas' relationship.

I loved this book!!!

This was definitely a 5 star read in my opinion. I loved this book and can't wait to see what happens next. Lucas, I have to admit I wanted to throat punch him a couple times. I felt so sad for Ginny that she had to put up with her hero being not so great. I really hope they get their happily ever after.

Holy Heart Shaped lockers! Like, okay, I'm kind of at a loss for words. Anyone that knows me, knows just how impossible that is.

So, let me thank Jessie for letting me have an advanced copy of Sweet Agony to read in exchange for an honest review. And, I hate life kept taking me from the pages of this book. So frigging good. Heart wrenching. Desperate. Full of chaos and the sweetest of agonies. The title is perfection. And now, I frigging need the next installment. Lol

I'm not sure yet my full feelings on a few things but I can say this, I want to shake both Ginny and Lucas. Kick them both in the ass. Then, hug them both. Talk about putting your marbles in a cup and shaking them up. Life is much simpler when you're a kid. The day dreams, the magic of it all surrounds you until you know your knight in shining armor will ride up on his white horse and rescue you. That's how it rolls.

As adults, we know it doesn't happen much. And with Gin and Lucas it's no difference. Their downfall, other than Lucas being a donkey's left nut, is that Gin was too young for him. That few years difference is what started them out on a path meant for destruction. In order to rebuild though, you have to strip down to the bare essentials and rebuild. This is something that they both are facing when the past catches up to Mrs. Dubois and Ginny.... life will never be the same.

With the safe haven of living across form the Young's, life is a battle. One to stay on top of things Ginny, has to play by a new set of rules. Ones set by the one person that can literally ruin her life in ways only satin imagined. But, when all hopes lost, salvation -or what should be salvation- shows up.

With the red flag (so to speak) waving in front of him Lucas is determined to do the one thing he should have some years ago. He's going to get the girl.... or... maybe not...

Whilst I understand authors needing to make a living off their books, I am sorry to say I feel ripped off by this author for this part of a book. This story is in 3 parts for some reason.
I have never and will never buy a book that has been broken down into parts. Will be refunding this book.
I have really enjoyed this author's books in this series and some of her other books but I am so annoyed at paying full price for a third of a story. If you can get the books as soon as they release at a cheaper price, then they are a bargain, but otherwise you are going to pay over the odds for a single book.
Shame on you Ms Lane. One story costing AU$12.00. Not fair at all.

The previous three books in this series have been wonderful, full of angst, betrayal, hurt, redemption and finally, the type of love that survives.
A pure pleasure to read, every one of them.
I was so excited to finally get another book in this series as it has been well over 2 years since the last one ended and gave us a big tease of Lucas and Ginny and now to be treated like this.
I know this is advertised as a cliff hanger and I was expecting it to stop somewhere crucial but really, I wish I had waited until all three were written.
I found this one going back in time too tame.
We know Lucas has had a special female somewhere in his past and whilst it is good to read about that I still think this could have been shorter and the whole story done in two books., a story should be just that, a complete story.

2020 – addition
The author has made this book free on amazon.
This is now book four instead of book three. The short novel Mission Delivery is now book three.
Enjoy the story but still be aware it is in three parts and the other two need to be purchased.
Buy the box set for better value for money.
This ends in a CLIFF HANGER.

Repeats

The only thing I read was what was in the other books so your buying three when it should have been one. I swear that's what you get for your money. I'm gobsmacked that there was a person who read these books and thought they were worth printing , trust me it's not you come across as if you had amnesia. The only reason I read till the end was to make sure I wasn't going crazy, I'm sorry you have been ill but they should never have agreed to print three out. At first I thought yea good book to get my teeth into I should have ate the next ones and saved a lot of time and it also has a cliff hanger been there seen it won't be back.

Three parts series

I had no idea this would be a three part series for Lucas and Ginny. This ends at the same scene Stripping Her Defenses ends. This tells us all about Lucas and Ginny's childhood and when they're young adults. I loved reading the stories from their childhood. I even like Olivia, she's a wonderful friend. This shows how someone's actions, even brief, can change the course of the future.

“You all go ahead. I’ve got something I need to handle first.”
Riley’s eyebrows shot up. “You do?”
I nodded.
“You need backup?” Chase asked.
Shaking my head, I gave them the truth. “My past is flashin’ her ass in a red dress across the room and strung out of her mind. I’m gonna go find out why, and then I’m gonna be her goddamn fortune teller and explain what her fucking future is.”
“And that is …?” Kara asked, her eyes full of curiosity, although a smile was on her face.
“Me.”

OMG! I loved it. Read it in one go!

The tug back and forth between the two leads is brilliant! You want to slap him for being so daft initially then for trying to be noble! Then you want to slap her for being proud and...well....that would spoil it! Now off to work so I can cone home to read the next hit! Yeay!!!!!!

A lot of backstory. A little too repetitious from a previous book, but non-the-less, a good story. I'm not a lover of serial books but do want to read the rest of this trilogy.

I don't know whether to like Ginny or just pity her pathetic ass, because man she was a sorry excuse for a female. I absolutely loved when she finally stood up for herself against her childhood bully! I fist pumped the air and yelled 'take that you bitch'..but then she went back to being the pathetic, love lorn girl from her childhood. Honestly I don't think Lucas was worth even a smidgen of her love for him, he was a huge dick and an even bigger manwhore! Seriously..eww!!!

In any case Ginny was quite frankly fucking stupid to do what she did when she knew the man was drunk out of his skull, she totally took advantage of the situation and through her rose colored glasses thought everything was going to be sunshine and rainbows the day after. Reality checks are such bitches, but she totally deserved it for being so fucking pathetic...again!

Now at almost thirty she's a damn alcoholic, though her circumstances are quite difficult to deal with, her father being such a huge douche and all but seriously, drinking? I feel like she should know better.

Alas, this book ends on a whopper of a cliffhanger but the author does warn the readers, which is truly appreciated! So if, like me, cliffhangers are a huge pet peeve for you buy all three books in this tiny spinoff or the bundled set so as to not be disappointed with the not so final endings...
