An energetic little dog wants to go on an adventure-- and make new friends along the way. Come along with Pug in this Guided Reading Level C story, perfect for beginning readers to read on their own!

Looking out the window, Pug sees Peg taking a walk one snowy morning. He wants to join her! But no matter how much he yap, yap, yaps, no one wants to take him outside. Mom is too comfortable, and Dad is too tired from shoveling.

That just leaves Tad, who's still asleep. But Pug knows just how to wake him up-- "Yap, yap, yap!" Tad doesn't want to get up-- but once they're out on their walk, he has to agree it was a very good idea.

Theodor Geisel Award-winner Ethan Long uses his trademark wit and energy to make this simple story for the newest readers memorable and hilarious.  Very simple text paired with expressive, bright illustrations makes this a perfect book for young children to read on their own.

The award-winning I Like to Read® series focuses on guided reading levels A through G, based upon Fountas and Pinnell standards.  Acclaimed author-illustrators--including winners of Caldecott, Theodor Seuss Geisel, and Coretta Scott King honors—create original, high quality illustrations that support comprehension of simple text and are fun for kids to read with parents, teachers, or on their own!

For readers who've mastered basic sight words, Level C books feature slightly longer sentences and a wider range of high-frequency words than Level B books. Level C books are suitable for mid-to-late kindergarten readers.  When Level C is mastered, follow up with Level D

Pug by Ethan Long is a sweet, easy to read picture book all about a Pug who wants to see his doggy friend!

This book is an excellent tool to get young readers starting to read. There are short, simple sentences that also have a tiny rhyming scheme. This story is a great way to encourage young readers to help read along, and perhaps get them to tell their own stories with the pictures.

The illustrations are incredible and it's just a fun, simple and sweet story! Definitely a book I'll be sharing!

Three out of five stars.

Short and simple. I felt like the ending left a little to be desired. Maybe a couple more pages would have wrapped it up a little better?

This book is very short but I also like that because it is meant to keep the attention of a first grader. The sentences are very short as well, and they often rhymed together. Having the rhyming aspect within the book as well is especially helpful for students that struggle with pronunciation of words these tongue twisters may seem hard at first but you only get better with practice which is why it is good sometimes to include this in their reading.

Perfect for a first read alone book!
This is the first book my 5 year old son was able to read by himself. I would love to see more books at this reading level to encourage very very beginning readers.

The words were 3 letters, three to four words per sentence, one sentence per page. The pictures clearly matched the story as well.

I like animals, and this is what a dog would do, but even though it is a beginner book I think there can be a little more "to" the book.
This book is $14.95 and don't even bother paying, get it from the library.
The pug is cute. I am not going to re-read this book, for me, one time read.

Got this free to keep from a public library.
Very simple text. It says "Guided Reading Level C". My almost-3-year-old and I haven't started from the beginning (A?), so I don't know how good this series is at teaching reading. May revise rating in the future.

Very basic-probably only 25 different words. Nice illustrations. Diverse character.

Cute book. I liked Peg. But there was too much yipping and just wasn't quite a 4-star book to me.

My son read this book to me. It's just the thing for beginners and he didn't feel too intimidated by the words or length of sentences. I'll have to look for more books by Ethan Long

Simple, repeated text in both Spanish and English. The reader must guess why Pug wants to go outside so badly.

Good first book for a child who's first learning to read. The child could also read it to their parents.

Pug looks out the window and sees Peg walking her dog in the snow. He tries to get various family members to pay attention so he can go out and see her. He barks repeatedly at Mom, Dad, and Tad. Finally Tad rouses himself from bed and takes the excited dog out. It turns out that Pug was really trying to see Mima, Peg’s dog. It’s a cute surprise to see Mima revealed beyond the snow bank. Peg and Tad walk their two pugs together in the snow and everyone is happy.

This bilingual Spanish and English board book was originally published as an English language reader in the publisher’s I Like to Read series. In this edition, readers will learn simple phrases such as, “Pug sees Peg. / Momo ve a Mima” in both languages, as well as the corresponding onomatopoeia for barking: “yap yap yap / guau guau guau.” Long’s cartoon style here features simple, rounded characters with large expressive eyes, and a minimum of background details, keeping the focus on the anxious pug and the dynamic between the dogs and the humans. Whether the reader is fluent in Spanish or not, babies will enjoy the sweet drama of getting out to walk in the snow with a pal.

Digital illustrations, easy vocabulary words, and a simple story line with which most dog-owners can relate, follows Pug in his morning routine. When Pug spots Peg outddorsw, he wants to head out there for himself. But neither Mom nor Dad are interested, and Pug must persuade Tad to take him outside. Eventually, after some persistence and hints--one leg hiked up as though he is ready to soak Tad's bed--Tad does the right thing. Peg and Pug are delighted to be reunited, maybe starting some sparks between their respective human companions. As with all of the books by this author/illustrator, readers will be amused at Pug's antics. And who can blame the poor dog? His morning outing may be his only chance to meet up with his canine friend.

"Yap, yap, yap!" Pug sees Peg through the window. He wants to join her! Why won't anyone take him on a wonderful snowy walk? Mom is just too comfortable in her recliner. Dad is tired from shoveling. That leaves lazy Tad, who is still sleeping. "Yap, yap, yap!" insists a determined and clever Pug. Theodor Geisel Award-winner Ethan Long uses his trademark wit and energy to make this simple story for the newest readers memorable and hilarious.

This is an early reader, but because of the size of the book, it world work for storytime.
