Nothando’s Journey is a journey in self-discovery told through the eyes of a young girl named Nothando.
The book tells of the Reed Festival, an important celebration in Nothando’s country of Swaziland in Southern Africa. Nothando and her brother venture into the unknown hills, in order to get to the festival on time.
As Nothando explores the hills of Swaziland, she visits with various animals—Nothando moves freely with the animals, and begins to become comfortable with who she is.
By the end of the book, the reader will soon learn that Nothando is “grateful to be Nothando.”
This is a wonderful story about one girl's journey in over coming her fear, gaining self confidence, and believing in herself.
Set in beautiful, Swaziland, the journey Nothando (which means "Love" in Swazi) takes with her brother, is a long, and dangerous one. Along the way she learns a lot from the wild animals around them. Taking their best characteristics, she uses those to build her self confidence. Strength that the lion posses, calm like the fish eagle, bravery like the baboon has, and much more.
This is an absolute gem of a children's book. The mixed-media illustrations are so striking and beautiful, and the story about a little girl named Nothando (the Swazi word for "Love") and her journey to self confidence is a beautiful message to children to believe in themselves, learn mindfulness, and make multicultural connections. I adore this book, and recommend it to all families with young children!
I won this beautiful book from the publisher with no condition on my giving any review. However, this book is so beautifully illustrated I wanted to write a review. The tale takes readers on a journey from being scared to learning confidence through understanding your surroundings. I would recommend this to any adult trying to find a book to read for a child's bedtime story or any time. The yoga poses are so much fun too.
The illustrations are colorful and spectacular. They keep you riveted on the page. The story is simple yet profound: a young child tries to gain courage on her journey. The illustrations and the story should inspire children to tell through art (albeit collage, crayon or song) their own strengths, observations and fears.
I won this fabulous book in a Goodreads Giveaway and cannot recommend it highly enough. The beautiful illustrations have an almost three dimension effect and bring this enchanting tale to life. Little Nothando and her older brother will delight early readers and parents alike. A lovely book that deserves every success.
I was taken with Nothando at every step of her journey....the best is always getting my 3 year old niece to do the poses :-) So much fun, so interactive. So much more it will do for little girls and boys the world over.
I loved NOTHANDO'S JOURNEY, especially the pages showing the animals doing yoga poses! What a perfect book to introduce yoga to kids! The inner journey is revealed as the outer journey is completed. The collaged illustrations are a joy!
A beautiful story about a young girl who learns self-confidence. Such a great message for young readers, not to mention the illustrations are gorgeous!!
What I adore about "Nothando's Journey" is how Jill Manly introduces young readers to a culture they may not otherwise come across. Her book is beautifully illustrated and lovingly written!
Beautiful, beautiful story and beautiful, beautiful art. What a way to get children interested in cultures unknown to them, and started on a practice that will serve them for their whole lives!
