Three schizoaffective manic episodes drove the author of "Icarus Redeemed", a true story, down the rabbit hole of madness, into a world rife with demons, saints, and delusions of grandeur; depression drove him to the edge of a cliff, where he stood precariously, one short step away from his demise. Whether you have a mental disorder, are a friend or family member of someone who does, are a health worker, or are just plain curious, "Icarus Redeemed" is a story of hope in the face of unimaginable adversity that will give you new insights into the world of mental illness.
This was a well-told story about a young man suffering schizoaffective disorder and going through three manic episodes which each required a stay at the mental hospital. The writing is taut and the pacing is good, but I thought the story was over-written. When the words and grammar and style all say 'calm,' it's hard to take even a suicide attempt seriously, because the language of the story works against the tension of the action. However, that is a relatively small flaw. I am schizoaffective myself and really enjoyed this book, and I recommend it to other people with this disorder, as well as their loved ones who want insight into what the condition is like.
I read this book to gain a better understanding of my son’s schizoaffective disorder and this book did not disappoint. Full of knowledge, hope, and insight, the author explains very well what he went through and how he came out the other end. Extremely well-written and comprehensible. I highly recommend this book to anyone looking to understand this illness from first hand experience. I’d like to thank the author and would love to read more from him!
Interesting story and perspective, but it was written in a tangential way making it hard for me to read. I think the way it was written was important to the story, I just had trouble with it.
this is a great book for anyone interested in mental illness. his experience with schizoaffective disorder is played out in a way that is relatable. if you have ever wondered what goes through the mind of someone with a mental illness this book will be very helpful. it lacks the manic energy of an episode, but that makes it easier for those without schizoaffective to understand.
