A moderately interesting book, as the biographical subject lived in Iowa during his childhood and early adult years.
Somewhat frustrating to read, in that material was obviously taken from notes in a journal. There were short snippets of stories followed by frequent changes in subject.
Still, as with most attempted biographies, half or more of the interest lies in the historical events that are experienced. This man moved his family to California and had the "good luck" to live close enough to San Fransisco--and at the proper time in the early 1900's--to experience both the great quake and the World's fair.
[an aside]More and more as I read about women who lived before the 1960's I cringe at the hardships they had to bear. Those hardships centered around but were not exclusive to giving birth, over and over again, quite often ruining their health and not living to see their youngest children grown.
But getting back to the subject of this "biography," it is worth noting that a boy who was raised in the home of an abusive father could grow up to be a gentle husband and loving parent.
The Golden Thread of the title refers to a belief in God and salvation that was passed down from his mother, and which he demonstrated and lived out his entire life, part of which was devoted to work in the Salvation Army.
