The Variant Saga was initiated with such a fascinating initial story that I tried to get my hands on the complete series. I was successful and didn't have to wait between installments. I confess that when I'm enjoying a series, I just want to get to the next book.

Transient Echoes is the second book in the series and Chaney has done another fantastic job. The first book left us with a cliffhanger, so if you don't want to know more stop here. The second novel builds on the first. ANYTHING that I say could be construed as a spoiler so consider this your second spoiler alert.

Terry was sucked through the rift before it closed. He is transported to a new world and must make his way alone. Mei and John have managed to begin to have the Variant gas dissipate from the atmosphere, and there is a new hope for Earth with the expectation that the surface may be habitable again, but as is usually the case, there are some still attempting to sabotage the project.

Both, stories run simultaneously. There is speculative fiction in both stories with suspense and action, innovative threads with alien creatures, and pulse-pounding threats galore. There is much to love here and this is just book two.

I have to say I was a little disappointed about this book. It's not that it wasn't good, but I had high expectations after the first book (The Amber Project), and I'm sorry to say Transient Echoes didn't exactly meet them...

This book follows two stories: Mei and John's story, who are about 4 years older than they were when we last saw them at the end of The Amber Project, and Terry's story, who is still alive, but no longer on Earth.
I really enjoyed Mei and John's story. I loved the mystery and suspense as they try to find out what happened 4 years ago when the "Second Jolt" occurred. I also appreciated getting a glimpse inside their heads and how the author crafted realistic and unique feelings for both for both of them about what happened at the Ortego facility. It felt like a great sequel story to The Amber Project.
As for Terry's story, I have to say I was a little disappointed... It just didn't feel to be in the same genre as the first book and even Mei and John's story. Terry's story is without doubt a science-fiction story, while the rest of the book and the first book are more dystopian than sci-fi. I really enjoy distopian fiction, but I'm not a huge fan of sci-fi... It's not that the story wasn't well done or interesting, it just didn't really meet my taste.
I wasn't sure I wanted to read the next book in the series until the end. No spoilers here, but I loved the ending. All the details coming together! And the cliffhanger! Now I just have to read book 3, because I must know what happens next.

I gave 3.5 stars for to this book strictly out of personal preference, since I didn't enjoy the sci-fi part of it so much, as I mentioned before. However, I am confident a reader who enjoys this genre will like this sequel to The Amber Project very much.

*** I received a free e-copy of this book through For Love of a Book's Advance Reader Opportunity program. This did not affect my review in any way. ***

Transient Echoes was a superb follow-up to The Amber Project (Book 1 of the Variant Saga). J. N. Chaney delivers again with this novel. This book picks up 3 years after the completion of book 1. The Variant gas has started to dissipate but is not completely gone on the surface of Earth. The lower levels allow non-genetically modified humans to slowly come up to the surface to work and experiment with the use of suits. Mei is leading a team of researchers. The military is sending up teams to map and eradicate any of the hostile creatures that they come into contact with, and this is a perfect place for John to show his prowess. Terry has been living alone in survival mode for the last 3 years when he finally finds himself venturing off further exploring this strange Variant planet.

This book is told from the dual perspective of Terry on an alien world, and Mei working at the last known location before Terry disappeared. I spent a lot of time in the beginning wondering if Terry was actually on another planet or if he was just transported to somewhere else on Earth.

I love that Chaney is able to write such a superb young adult/dystopian novel without any real hook of romance. It is quite rare to find a book without such a huge focus on romance. There is nothing against romance, but it does not need to be the focal point of every single book. If a character can stand out and be defined by themselves for their prowess, it is awesome. There is a slight Mei/John vibe that has grown from Book 1, but it does not detract from the story in any way.

My only negatives or questions while reading are: What happened to all of the other modified children? I wanted more physical descriptors of the aliens appearance within this book (this did get better throughout the book and the gem at the end was awesome). I wanted to know more about some of the characters from book one, such as Terry mother's and John's new commander. (I get the feeling we will find out more with Book 3).

Favorite thing about this book: The reward of the drawing at the end of the book, which I can only assume is Ludo. (Which I loved the name that made me think of The Labyrinth all the time). Overall this was a solid 4.5 stars for me. I stayed up late because I just had to make it to the end.

Review of TRANSIENT ECHOES (VARIANT #2) By JN Chaney

In this sequel to THE AMBER PROJECT (VARIANT #1), author JN Chaney weaves a blend of futuristic science fiction with Dystopiana, survivalism, and otherworldly fantasy. After an alien gas known as Variant destroyed most of humanity in the 22nd century, leaving only a small enclave to live underground, genetic engineering and improved technology have finally allowed human scientists and military explorers to live aboveground, provided they remain a safe distance from the residue radiation caused by the Second Jolt. Meanwhile, the hybrid child Terry, who closed the Rift which allowed in Variant, is exiled unwillingly and unintentionally to a farflung world where survival is equivalent to the life experienced by earthly cavepersons. An extraordinary vivid and poetic imaging keeps the story turning.

You know why I like books better than movies? Because a lot of times the sequel is even better.
I was interested in the characters during The Amber Project but now I really care about them. We follow along with Terry, Mei, and John 3 yrs later and see how they've grown and progressed.
Terry has been trying to survive in a strange world when after 3 yrs he discovers he's not as alone as he thought.
Mei has become a scientist and using a cover story, John and her are trying to find out what happened to Terry that day. What they discover is something they could never have forseen.
While I really enjoyed reading about both worlds it was Terry's pov that had me flipping pages until late at night. The discoveries he was making had me begging for answers as much as he was.
Mei's pov was good but it wasn't until closer to the end I really started getting into it.
Then there was that cliffhanger with a check of a epilogue!
The 3rd book isn't listed on goodreads which leads me to believe it's still being worked on, which honestly worries me. There's just so much going on that I'm afraid by the time it's available I'll have forgotten some important things.

I was given an ecopy by the author in exchange for a honest review. Thank you

Transition book

Good transition book, but nothing super exciting happens. It does offer many answers but leaves many mysteries, which I assume will be wrapped up in book 3.

I find this series to be highly addicting. I flew through the Amber Project and was blown away. I couldn't wait to get my hands on Transient Echoes. Once again I was not disappointed. I found that this series will stick with me for awhile. The characters are well developed and the story line flows effortlessly. The ending of book one left me with a little bit of a cliffhanger and tons of questions. Those questions are answered and more questions are formed.

This book picks up four years later and much has changed. My favorite character in this book is John. He makes me laugh the most and I just love his loyalty and bravery. He is such a great character. My favorite John moments are when he is talking to his commander. It shows his humor and who he is at the same time.

At this point I usually talk about my favorite part of the book. I literally can't do that because even trying to describe it gives away too many spoilers. The only words I'm going to say is shaved heads. I hope if you finish reading you know the moment I speaking about.

I would recommend this book to all of my sci fi and dystopian loving fans.

The book starts off three years after The Amber Project ends.
The second jolt sent Terry to a strange alien planet, and he is fighting to survive each day.
As he continues to explore the strange lands around him, he starts to find buildings and signs of intelligence that just up and vanish..

Back in the underground city, Mei and John's blood is used to make a vaccine that will allow people to go above ground using a mask instead of an entire suit to walk around topside.

There is so much happening in this sequel and everything flows along at a good pace.

Steve Barnes did well as the narrator but I rather the narrator from The Amber Project: The Variant Saga.

I received this book from the author. I am voluntarily choosing to review it. This is the second in the series that I have read and it has just gotten better and more involving. Terry is finding out more about the area the Jolt sent him. John and Mei are trying to find out what happened to Terry and even if he is still alive. JN Chaney's writing is clear and concise. You can picture in your mind the work John and Mei are doing and the area where Terry is. John's humor and conversations add a nice touch to the story and give you a bit of insight into John's personality. Terry's taut situation keeps you guessing as to what will happen next. This is an excellent dystopian story with wonderful writing. I am looking forward to Book 3.

Having read the first in this series, I ended up going in to this book with high expectations; something I try to avoid doing, but which I sometimes can't help. Thankfully, I was not disappointed!

Like the first in the series, this is an excellent book, with fantastic worldbuilding, beautiful descriptions, and wonderful plot and character development, making for an all round great read.

A little slower start than I was hoping for but once it started to pick up, I had to know what happened next. Too bad the next book isn't out until the end of the month. This was not the kind of book that I had to just eat up but it was interesting and unique. The last quarter of this book was the best of this series, so far.

I received a copy of this book from the author through a Goodreads program.
Mei is on duty to solve the radiation problem. When a bag, presumably belongs to Terry is found, she has to take the chance to save him.
Transferred into a different planet, Terry is trapped in a tribe rivalry and has to save his new family.
The first few chapters kept me guessing, but when I found where the story is heading, it kept me turning the pages. I skipped some parts of the dialogues, but that didn't bother me to continue reading.
Close to the last pages, a few hints are quite obvious that made me leave some parts out.
Overall, it's really good for the second novel.

I enjoyed digging into this sequel to The Amber Project. It was fascinating, although a tad unsatisfying. I love stories that take place in other worlds or the distant future, so I enjoyed the element of reading an author's idea about what another dimension would be like and even the world in 200+ years (as I did with the first book). I did feel like there was a lot less resolution than I would have liked. If this was a standalone book, it would have been very disappointing. However, I do realize that this is part of an ongoing series and thus will likely not satisfy everything I feel needs to be resolved in one book. ;-) I have the next book downloaded to my Kindle and look forward to digging in!

For those following along with my #vtReadingChallenge: this one was for the second "book for children/teens" category

Although I really didn't have many complaints about book 1, the character development in book 2 made this installment significantly more enjoyable for me. In some ways, Transient Echoes is more focused than its predecessor. Where book 1 spread over Terry's entire childhood, book 2 spans only several months... perhaps in this way it was easier to live the story with the characters.

There was a short time where I was disappointed that this book provided no glimpse into what life was like underground or what was happening politically... but I pretty quickly got over that, as the novel feels so well-balanced as it is.

I listened to this book via audio (whereas I read book 1) and, overall, I did enjoy the narration. The narrator did a great job with the alien language, and it was an overall easy listen. The one thing that irked me about the narration-author collaboration was that the "audio files" were read as if a transcript was being read... I found it quite distracting. Maybe it would have been too hard to follow, but I would have preferred a more descriptive title to the audio file with a more audio play type performance for these tidbits.

I received this audiobook from the author.

I received a free copy of this book from the author, through the David Estes Fans and YA Booklovers Unite! Goodreads group, in exchange for an honest review.

It's been three years since Terry managed to close the rift. Back on Earth, the Variant air is thinning and people are now able to walk around on the surface. But, in trying to close the rift, Terry has been transported to a whole new universe, the origin of Variant, and he's just trying to survive in this strange place. Mei, one of Terry's best friends, just can't let him go. So now, she works tirelessly to try and figure out what happened on that day and also trying to find Terry, even breaking laws to do it.

I enjoyed this book way more than the first one. The introduction of the new world was brilliant. It was also really nice to see the development of the characters over the years. I am just beginning to love these characters. I am still confused af about the dates but hey, everything else is done so well that I'm just gonna let that slide. And now I must hang from a cliff because that ending was just not cool. At all.

Transient Echoes by JN Chaney is book 2 in the Variant Saga but can by read as a stand alone. After I read book one, it was so good I contacted the author and asked to review any of his future books since that is what I do. I was so fortunate, he sent me this book right away. I had about 20 books ahead of this but book one, The Amber Project, was so good that I had to jump right in. This book takes place a few years after book one. The hole/rift has been closed that sucked Terry to the new and strange world and has left micro wormholes. The story is about Mei and John, and crew, trying to continue to figure a way to make life better top side now that the Variant gas is slowed down and about Terry's new life on this strange world. Both stories are so action packed, full of life and death issues, lots of surprises, strange creatures, many twists and turns, great fantasy, imagination, dialogue, and great sci-fi adventures. Wonderful series! Going in my favorites!!!

JN Chaney returns to the near future and a world devastated by biological man-manse plague in Transient Echoes, the second book of the Variant Saga. Terry has cut the source of Variant off and now struggles to survive on a world far from Earth leaving the rest of the Uber-Gifted other children to try and recover the surface of the planet, a scientific group led by a girl named Mei is tasked to recreate a machine to produce fresh air. Met has other ideas as she tries to uncover the secrets of the Rift and what happened to Terry after the Second Jolt.

Chaney is very gifted in that he maintains his plots with aplomb painting an internal landscape in the reader’s mind, his expanding Variant Saga of a Dystopian future is a pleasant breath of fresh air to my regular reading fare of dragons, elves and heavily armored men with swords.

Transient Echoes is the second book in the Variant Saga. It picks up three years after Terry went through the rift caused by the second jolt. His friends are now left with the task of trying to not only find a reason for the rift but to search for the truth. His friend Mei might be the only one left wondering if Terry is even still alive. After all, three years is a really long time for Terry to be in whatever place he's been sent by that rift.

I truly enjoyed this book and could not get enough of it. I worried as the end was getting near that there would be cliffhangers but the storyline was wrapped up nicely and I can not wait for book three to come out!

I listened to the book on Audible and it was an incredible experience. The narrator did a superb job making the story come alive and he didn't do any of the annoying voices, but rather had a fast, soothing way of talking. I highly recommend the audio version.

This story starts a few years after the first story left off and unlike the first book, this one is only told in alternating points of view from Terry and Mei. Chaney did an excellent job at giving this one a completely different feel while seamlessly continuing the same tale. There is non stop action that will have your heart racing, a number of surprising twists and turns, plenty of new characters, and an ending that will have you begging for book three!

I didn't enjoy this second book in the series as much as the first, probably because I felt the two story lines were too far apart and not intersecting at all. I did enjoy the Mei and John story line and humor, while the Terry story line kept me uneasy and guessing. Still, I am invested in continuing with the series, available on Kindle Unlimited.

It has been three years since the second big jolt and Terry is lost on a distant world far away from his friends and family, but he has the voice of his sister in his head to keep him company. Back on earth Mei is work to death to figure out a way to see if they can bring Terry home.

This is a wonderful sequel to the Amber Project, it is filled with a ton of action and the suspense will have you falling off of your seat. Narrator Steve Barnes does a great job again with the book his use of different voices for each character is awesome, he really hit this one out of the park. I can't wait for the next part from these two guys and find out what happens to Terry and his friends.

This second book in The Variant Saga picks up slightly in the future from where the first left off. It follows three of the main characters from the first book as they continue on their hybrid paths. This book has a much different feel than the first, but is just as enjoyable with characters which are intense and still relatable. The science in this series plays a major role without being daunting and really aids in moving the storyline along. I look forward to seeing where this story goes next in book three.

Was slow reading throughout the book. BUT a good transition to book #3. The book itself truly is good enough that I put up with the narrator (As I listened to it on Audible). I really hated how he used a 'whispery' voice. Almost didn't read the book because of it.I did enjoy the character developments. The story was somewhat predictable. Looking forward to the next book!

My star ratings include these 5 elements:
1~great story line
2~engaging characters
3~use of word building
4~being well edited
5~the ending

A great book! It was a little slow at the beginning, but once the pace picked up, watch out! The author does an excellent job of describing new worlds, new people groups and new languages. This book reminds of the "old time" sci-fi books & movies. The interactions between Terry & his "imaginary" sister were awesome, especially when Terry "visits" his old house. This scene was reminiscent of Stephen King at his best.....spooky!

I look forward to reading the next installment in this sage. I really love this series!

I enjoyed this book even more than The Amber Project, the first book in the series. I was so curious to find out what happens to Terry and Mei and John.

Terry lives isolated on a different world for over three years, before he comes across anything resembling intelligent life...and then, oh boy!

Mei spends years trying to figure out what happened to Terry, and she finds so much more than she bargains for...

This was a quick read for me, finished it in one day. Loved the little twist at the end.

Another great read

Enjoyed reading book 2 in this saga. The follow on from book one is great with more depth being developed in some of the character. There are a couple of the original children missing in this tale and I hoped they get a chance to reappear in the next book. Left with a little bit of a cliff hanger in regards to the team from earth have passed through the wormhole to another world where a team is setting out to find out what has disturbed an ancient quarantined building. Look forward to reading book 3

Just wow! I need more! This story picks up a few years after The Amber Project. We find out that Terry has been transported to another planet. Mei is working at the ruins but also has her own agenda on trying to find out what happened to Terry. The point of views go back and forth between the unknown planet and Earth. The world building is incredible. Earth is still nothing like we know of it today and the way the author describes the new Earth and the unknown planet that Terry is on is hard to resist. We get to experience Terry's trials as he decides if he is going to continue to survive or not. And on the other hand we see Mei and John go through their own trials deciding if they need to move forward or not, on the low, to try and find out what happened to Terry. Both sides meet great new characters and many new journeys start. I have to warn you that this story is not like The Amber Project. Our characters have grown and are in completely different areas of their lives. I love how Transient Echoes compliments the Amber Project. It's different and exciting! Kudos to JN Chaney for another great story!
