Grant Morrison has been working with DC Comics for twenty five years, after beginning their American comics career with acclaimed runs on ANIMAL MAN and DOOM PATROL. Since then they have written such best-selling series as JLA, BATMAN and New X-Men, as well as such creator-owned works as THE INVISIBLES, SEAGUY, THE FILTH, WE3 and JOE THE BARBARIAN. In addition to expanding the DC Universe through titles ranging from the Eisner Award-winning SEVEN SOLDIERS and ALL-STAR SUPERMAN to the reality-shattering epic of FINAL CRISIS, they have also reinvented the worlds of the Dark Knight Detective in BATMAN AND ROBIN and BATMAN, INCORPORATED and the Man of Steel in The New 52 ACTION COMICS.

In their secret identity, Morrison is a "counterculture" spokesperson, a musician, an award-winning playwright and a chaos magician. They are also the author of the New York Times bestseller Supergods, a groundbreaking psycho-historic mapping of the superhero as a cultural organism. Great Doctor Who story tying together some Who history in a pretty clever way.
Written by Grant Morrison, before he became GRANT MORRISON.
Good sci-fi, and some great bits between the Sixth Doctor and Jamie.

Something of a disappointing second volume in these reasonably entertaining comic strip capers featuring the Sixth Doctor and Frobisher the Whifferdill.

The lead story, "Exodus / Revelation! / Genesis!" has some fun characterization and a good plot [7/10]. "Nature of the Beast!" by Simon Furman is a well-told story, but not one that feels very Doctor Who [6/10]. "Time Bomb" by Jamie Delano is a terrific piece of timey-wimey Whoness [8/10]. "Salad Daze", another Furman story, is amusing but nothing more than that [6/10]. Grant Morrison's "Changes" is light, but well-paced and fun [7/10]. "Profits of Doom" is a nice science-fiction piece, with some good characters and good plotting [7/10]. "The Gift", also be Delano, has a bit too much silliness in it, but also makes some very nice use of time travel [7/10]. Unfortunately, Morrison's "The World Shapers" has largely fallen out of continuity, but its a great story and would have been an awesome part of continuity [10/10]. Overall, a very strong volume of Who stories thanks mainly to Delano and Morrison.

Another fantastic book of John Ridgway's Doctor Who comics, this time complemented by the writing of Jamie Delano and Grant Morrison, among others. I wish Delano, in particular, had spent a bit longer on the strip - his work here is excellent.

Eight stories, so eight mini reviews:

Story Name: Exodus, Revelation! Genesis!
What is it about? The Doctor finds a group of aliens have somehow materialised on board the TARDIS. He follows the signal that caused this to find a nefarious scheme taking place.
Thoughts: What starts out as an interesting space RTA with a group of refugee aliens quickly turns into a more humdrum escapade inside a castle. There is a familiar enemy that pops up, but this didn’t have any staying power.
Score: Boring: Just plain dull

Story Name: Nature Of The Beast
What is it about? The Doctor takes his friends on a picnic on a tranquil planet where nothing can possible go wrong. They’re interrupted by a hunt chasing down a wolf-beast.
Thoughts: This one had an interesting story, even if I saw the twist pretty quickly. Two pages (48 and 49) are printed the wrong way round which took me a little while to work out what was going on.
Score: Worth reading

Story Name: Time Bomb
What is it about? An alien race send their garbage into the past, contaminating prehistoric Earth.
Thoughts: This one was pretty clever with some nice ideas and consequences. The star performance of this collection.
Score: Buy the book for this story
Story Name Salad Daze
What is it about? After Peri puts the Doctor on a salad diet, he reciprocates by sending her on a mind trip to an Alice in Wonderland story where all the characters are vegetables.
Thoughts: Some weird ideas that ultimately aren’t worth the punchline.
Score: Worth reading, I suppose.

Story Name: Changes
What is it about? A shape-changing alien gets on board the TARDIS
Thoughts: I do like stories that feature the extended interior of the TARDIS and this one did not disappoint. That the Doctor has his own shape-changing companion made this a fun read.
Score: Worth reading

Story Name: Profits Of Doom
What is it about? Another story featuring a sleeper ship, but this one gets its sleeping crew stolen.
Thoughts: Another quite compelling adventure that unfortunately sees the companions seriously under-utilised. The Doctor does pick up another one for the story, but there’s no reason for Peri or Frobisher to be there. Apart from that, a fun tale.
Score: Worth reading

Story Name: The Gift
What is it about? A robot sent as a practical joke backfires when it starts using the city around to to replicate itself.
Thoughts: Some aspects of the setting to this story really bugged me, but it’s a pretty fun replicating robots story nonetheless.
Score: Worth reading

Story Name: The World Shapers
What is it about? The Doctor lands on a familiar world where there’s something terribly wrong with time.
Thoughts: This is a follow-up to the 1st Doctor episode The Keys Of Marinus, which I have not seen, nor know anything about. The story, though plays out with some surprising origins and endings of one well-known Doctor Who enemy.
Score: Worth reading

Final Thoughts
A lot of these stories are showing their age in their style and forced “sci-fyness”. As a collected set, this is also let down by being solely in black and white. I understand that cost meant it being printed as such in the magazine, but the addition of colour would have really lifted the stories from the page. For my first Doctor Who graphic novel, this was fairly enjoyable as a whole. Score: Worth reading What’s next? Heroes: Volume Two

I read most of these comic strips in DWM at the time they were originally published, but this was a delight to revisit. I think the DWM comic strip is one of the hidden delights of Doctor Who. If you're a Doctor Who fan and you haven't dipped into them then you should.

The art is great, the stories are fun. And it has Frobisher the Penguin who I wish, in my old age, the TV series would have the guts to drop into the television series. Even though it would probably annoy a certain type of Doctor Who fan.

The best stories are Exodus/Revelation!/Genesis and The World Shapers, which gives the collection its title. The World Shapers is a strip that does interesting things with Doctor Who continuity, even if not all of them are particularly joyful. (I won't say what because spoilers.) I also like the way The World Shapers uses the Time Lords.

The short nature of these strips doesn't really allow for much depth but I got a feeling that there was an element of the tongue-in- cheek in the writing, which made the occasional serious story stand out.

Note; this is a revised version of a review of these batch of strips posted at the end of my Letterboxd review of The Two Doctors.

Whereas the first couple of strips had an ever-rotating line of editors for DWM, the latter half is under the stewardship of Sheila Cranna for its duration, and it doesn’t quite reach the heights of the Parkhouse years but neither are they a bad batch. The plots may be a lot more typical Doctor Who than some of the more out-there strips but there’s enough of a quirky feel to give them consistency with their elder siblings. Particular highlights are the ones written by Jamie Delano and popular comics scribe Grant Morrison - the latter does a fanservice-heavy Cyberman tale that shares the same name as the graphic novel and another one where the TARDIS gets invaded by a shape-shifting alien - though shout-out to Salad Daze for its ‘Alice in Wonderland with vegetables’ imagery (yes, this is how weird these strips get).

while I liked most of the stories in this collection, some I really disliked. I don't understand why it was decided to retrofit the Voord as the race that evolved into the Cybermen. Also I do not think the character of Peri bore any resemblance to the character at all: in looks or temperament.

It makes me so happy that Ridgway gets top billing on this book, because he is definitely the star here. This is some of my favorite work of his.

The Doctor is joined by Peri and Frobisher on quite a few adventures. The thing that stands out in this volume is the artwork by John Ridgeway, some of the panels are beautiful. A good read.
