A Prequel, a Sequel, and a Parallel: Three novellas set in the world of "A Rational Arrangement"
"His Angel": Lord Justin Comfrey is not in the habit of molesting the help. But when his host assigns an angelic young man to attend to Comfrey's every need, that resolve is sorely tested.
"Inconceivable": When Wisteria has trouble conceiving a child with her husband, Nikola Striker, it only makes sense to them to ask their secret husband for help. But to Justin, the question is not so simple.
"A Regular Hero": Callie strikes sparks with the handsome warcat Anthser, but she's a competitive racer and he serves the Blessed Lord Nikola. She wants more from her life than to be the second most important person in his. Must one of them give up their life's dream to be the other's mate?
This trio of novellas functions as an excellent companion piece to the full-length novel that precedes it. That being said, none of them can be read as stand-alone stories. Even the prequel story, “My Angel,” assumes significant familiarity with the world-building already in place, especially regarding the fantastical elements such as Blessings and greatcats.
My favorite story in this collection is “A Regular Hero” because of how well it highlights Rowyn’s crafting of the greatcat culture. Ansther and Callie’s happily ever after was a satisfying read, and the tale itself also shows the greatcats as sentient beings with goals and lives entirely separate from the humans in this world.
I also appreciated “Inconceivable” for the heavy topics it tackles, such as fertility and childhood trauma. No spoilers, but the ending is sheer perfection. Overall, this collection is a worthwhile read for those who thoroughly loved A Rational Arrangement.
This is an amazing book filled with supreme spice, amazing worldbuilding, fantastic characters and character growth, and a fantastic plot all wrapped up in a delightful writing pace that leaves a person aching for more at the end. A beautifully written story about how truth can set you free, love can win in the end, and how societal expectations aren’t necessarily morally correct.
Wisteria is a girl like no other. She’s logical to a literal fault, and shows no emotion. This makes her life quite difficult until she meets Lord Nikola, a young man in love with his peer, lord Justin. Which they must hide for such a thing isn’t exactly legal. These three spiral closer and closer, until a wedding proposal threatens to tear them apart. Can they have their happy ever after, or will the Blessing of love, just not be enough?
Trigger Warnings : a lot of religious themes (conducive to the plot) Mention and depiction of torture Suicide attempt Suicidal thoughts PTSD and panic attacks
Compilation of short stories in the world of A Rational Arrangement. For folks who are having a hard time coming down from the first book and need another hit.
Three short stories that intertwine with the first book, A Rational Arrangement which is best to read first. And you will want to read both of these fine books, not only for the lovely world building and deep characters but for the well balanced plot. The original story is about the relationship between Lord Comfrey, Lord Nikola and the most unusual Miss Wisteria a most different and unique personality.
In Further Arrangements, the first story is about the original meeting of Nikola and Justin, Lord Comfrey. It truly expands the underpinnings of their relationship and some of their problems. The second story is about the relations between the Greatcats. This is concurrent with action and dangers occurring simultaneous with the original book and is a delight in expanding information about these amazing cat people. The last story is about what happens later after Wisteria's marriage. This was most touching as deep wounds were revealed and a healing process occurring that expanded the relationship beautifully. Highly recommended.
On a hybrid Goodreads/Amazon scale, I'd rate these stories as follows: His Angel: 2.5 / 5 (Meh) -- Justin's far from his finest hour in his early interactions with young Nikola. No man should be so relieved to find that, even under provocative conditions, he will not, in fact, actually commit rape. Nikola is simply awfully young to me. A Regular Hero: 3.5 / 5 (Good) -- The greatcats Anthser and Callie's story (concurrent with the full-length novel) is enjoyable, especially when seeing humans from the greatcat perspective, and learning more about their culture pastimes and organizations. However, disregard their species and it's a fairly typical conflict-of-careers short romance. Inconceivable: 4.25 (Very good) -- Wisteria & Nikola's frank openheartedness is finally met by some emotional revelations about Justin's own past, truths buried beneath his confident façade. Once again you have to be okay with MFM and FMM activities, as well as MF and MM, but the story is about strengthening relationships with hope, healing, and love, not just lust.
If you liked "A Rational Arrangement", you'll like this. More Justin. More greatcats -- they have their own short story here. Less [spoiler placeholder for the major threat in "A Rational Arrangement"]; this is a quieter and more domestic set of stories. I particularly liked the third story, the "what happens next" story -- I was pleased to get to hear the post-wedding details of how the characters live their lives, both publicly and not so publicly in a society that isn't entirely open to unconventional relationship patterns, and I hope there's more coming about Fireholt.
I was so happy to find a follow-up to A Rational Arrangment! These three novellas are just as engaging and intriguing, and it was lovely to learn more about the greatcats' society. More please!
