A Craftily-Plotted Mystery

Absorbing, well-written mystery about private investigator protagonists arriving in a small town to clear a fireman suspected of arson and murder. After their arrival there’s an attempted murder by blunt instrument . . . followed by a man shot dead by an unknown gunman.

This book, which is #5 in the Derek Cole series, can be read as a standalone, and although characters from earlier books are mentioned, the author supplies enough details to satisfy. Protagonists and secondary characters are well-developed, with the exception of an important antagonist. I wanted clarification about affects of his mental status on daily living and business.

This book is more a private eye mystery rather than what I think of as a thriller. That said, I enjoyed reading this book by a new-to-me author. Recommended.

I found the book to have an interesting story, but thought there were many flaws. First, the editing was awful, with many misspelled words. The misspellings caused confusion while reading and time to interpret. Also, Phelps continues to use discuss his ex wife Lucy to excess. It is OK to bring her up once in awhile, but not constantly and in such depths. When you get passed these issues, the story itself was interesting to me and worth the read.

Another gem

Great story, again, with good characters, strong writing and good flow to story. Author is not afraid to mess with important characters, which adds an element of unease to the story line. Again a strong recommendation.
