Erin Hunter is inspired by a love of cats and a fascination with the ferocity of the natural world. As well as having a great respect for nature in all its forms, Erin enjoys creating rich mythical explanations for animal behavior, shaped by her interest in astronomy and standing stones.
Oh my goodness. Last 50 pages. This Warrior's set has taken The Turn. The first two books felt a little sluggish, but this one perked right up. Of course, with a title like The First Battle, you can't expect things to end well. I've read plenty of battles within the Warriors Universe and the one that concludes this volume is on the same level as The Last Hope (from Omen of the Stars). Yes, I am fangirl-ing over a bunch of cats. Shut up. I will be over there deeply bowing to the league that is Erin Hunter. During the first two books of Dawn of the Clans, I had trouble feeling a connection to any of the characters. Something in this one changed. It was so magnetic right from the start. I was pulled to either side of the issue; I could see their reasonings, their struggles, their beliefs; I understood the actions of each despite their being misinformed. It was a twisty swirly soap opera of cats and it was EXACTLY WHAT I WANTED. And knowing a big battle would end it all? Excuse me while I go drop-kick my hope out the window. The First Battle has now brought back an element to the Warriors World that I sorely missed in the first two books: StarClan. It doesn't really have that name yet (well, because neither group has been labeled a "clan" yet). But I got starry kitties and prophetic dreams and this huge spiritual surge of emotion that only comes with the Medicine cats and lost-souls. Things aren't completely set up yet, but holy crap those last two chapters... You may notice this book made it to my Tear-Bending shelf. Even though this shelf is reserved for books that make me sorely sad, few have physically made me cry. This book had me bawling (similarly to the ending of The Last Hope). I felt the pain welling and tried to hold it back, but damn you Kitties. One line and it all gushed out. Every single line of dialogue was so powerful. You wouldn't think it came from feral cats. People may not even believe me. Anyway, I can't see the next three books of Dawn of the Clans losing this rebound. And now I have to wait another six months for the next one. I'll just live with my feels until then.
I am a long-time fan of all the Warriors books. Some are definitely better than others. But of all the books, I think this book is the best. That's a large claim, that The First Battle is the best of all the Warriors books. But I truly believe that and here's why:
You see, firstly I teared up reading this. I've only cried reading a handful of books and this is one of them. I have a heart of ice, so if I cry that means the book is very moving. And The First Battle is very moving. If, like me, you are a fan of the Warriors saga, there is something very powerful of seeing everything just fall into place. The clans are finally starting to be established and that really made me emotional.
Another reason I think this book is so brilliant is that it shows the POV of the supposed villain, Clear Sky. And it turns out he's not as much as a villain as we'd thought. The best thing about The Dawn of the Clans books is that there are no true villains. No one is purely evil just for the sake of it. Even Clear Sky, who has done some despicable things, when things are told from his perspective, is shown to have some goodness inside of him. I think it shows the maturity of the writer when there isn't just a villain who is just one-sidedly evil, but rather characters with complicated and misunderstood motives.
Also, in this book, there's a lot of action. In general, there's never a dull moment in a Warriors novel.
So overall, I think that The First Battle definitely is the best example of the Warriors saga. But to understand it, you have to read The Sun Trail and Thunder Rising, the first and second books respectively. The Sun Trail is decent enough but nothing special and Thunder Rising is entertaining but again, not anything particularly amazing. But it's worth it, when you finally get to The First Battle.
Is it the natural inclination of living things to eventually find reasons to fight each other? Or is violence just a product of too many men who refuse to go to therapy and verbalize their feelings? Thesis statement, let's gooooooo.
i am ashamed to say this book is actually good. was it worth it to read the other 2 to get here? HELL NO, but i could stand this one
clear sky pov saved this so bad, i couldn’t stand just thunder and gray wing anymore.
this book was a rollercoaster, from war prisoners to realistic birth scenes to emotional deaths to cold blooded battles to multiplayer schizophrenia, it really had it all.
it didn’t drag at all, which surprised me. all character had something to do, the development was actually interesting and a bit unexpected at times. gray wing had a personality in this!! and thunder was… there!
overall solid, if the rest of the series goes on like this i might read some more warriors books, nostalgic and iconic tbh
Am I returning to these so that I can maybe hit 100 books in a year? Yes.
Did I cry when one of them died? Also yes.
Am I going to keep reading them? 100% Sorry not sorry to anyone who follows me and doesn't like cat books appearing on their feed; there's gonna be a lot for the next few days. They're nostalgic and have decent plot lines and I'm in a terrible slump.
Anyway 4/5. Can't wait to see them actually name the clans soon.

Compare to the other books of this series this is faster pace. The tension between clear sky and grey wing grows more. Tom returns and kidnaps the kits. There is a big battle.
As said in the title this book has a big battle. It doesn’t happen until the end of the book. The battle doesn’t disappoint. There is a lot of violence and death.
After the fight we get introduced to what will become starclan. I like that this isn’t normal. The living cats are confused and don’t talk about it to outsiders. They still listen to what they say.
Clear Sky kinda annoyed me. It made sense why he would attack outsiders but if he didn’t want anyone to starve why would be attack the cats that he grew up with if they went on his land. I also wish that cats from Clear Sky’s group had some kind of tension between the other group. It made sense for the Rogues to attack but why didn’t the tribe cats say anything. A lot of the cats didnt agree with Clear Sky, so why did they go along with killing what used to be there tribe mates. As a villain clear sky isn’t too bad because he is one of the few villains that is motivated by something other than power and you get to watch him get more corrupted.
Just as AWSOME as all the other warrior cats books I won't give the details that's for you to get into but I will say it's has a bit of sass the good kind and a tiny tiny bit reminded me of lion king IDK why
Reread December 10th-11th 2016 OMG it's still so damn amazing and I think I've read it faster than I did the first time
My favorite of the arc so far! The drama… the danger… the fight scenes… omg this book ripped out my heart and trampled all over it but you know I’ll be coming back for more
Somehow these books always manage to make me cry, even as an adult. Watching these two brothers slowly become enemies over food and land was heartbreaking.
“‘Kill me. Kill me and live with the memory. Then tell the stars that you won.’”
“This battle was supposed to prove that he could decide his own borders, and take as much territory as his cats needed to survive. But it hadn’t proven a thing, except that the moor cats were as willing to fight to the death as the forest cats.”
“‘Why did you leave the mountains? Did you need something to fight over so badly? Before you came, we hunted and slept and lay in the sun. We fought over prey, but no cat ever killed another. You brought death here.’”
→CAUTION! Spoilers for anyone who has not read the rest of the *saga*.
I think this book has showed a bit more maturity than certain previous books, though it probably won't be recognized by some in the case of Clear Sky's POV. First, let me state that I abhor Clear Sky's actions, who some cats call the evilest cat ever. But let me say that I can understand him on some level. His mind has become so warped by the grief of the last two books that his plans for a happy life for his group have been twisted into something unrecognizable. It's not OK, but he's not in his right mind; he actually believes, with conviction, that what he's doing is helping.
Overall, I was frustrated with many cats, not just Clear Sky. I was angry that the moore cats couldn't accept Thunder's return, and treated him as a deserter because he had previously left home with a father he never knew, but wanted to. Thunder learned the truth the hard way, he shouldn't be scorned on top of it. He's still young.
I like the way the books depict a cat heaven. Call me stupid, unscientific, blaspheming. I don't care, my beliefs are my own, and I like this aspect of the book. That's why it makes me sad that the other books say that their spirits fade in time. (Which makes me wonder, how could forgotten spirits fade if they visited other cats in their dreams? They shouldn't be forgotten, then, should they?)
A minor(?) point, one line in the book reads (about another cat): "Wasn't he ashamed to be so fat?" Hold. The. Phone. This may be directed at a cat; but these cats are like people. Children shouldn't assosciate shame with being fat. Some people can't help being fat (or skinny) because of health reasons, like myself. I feel bad enough about my weight gain without anyone projecting negetivity onto me, like I'm some pig who can't stop stuffing my face. I don't eat much, but my fibro prevents the proper amount of daily excercuse. I'm an adult, not the intended reading audience of 9/10 year olds, so I can kinda brush this off, but kids already pick this stuff up from everywhere; they don't need their favorite book heroes telling them this is OK too. OK, done ranting.
I’ve had my doubts about the previous two books because of the lack of plot happening around but The First Battle completed altered my perspective of this arc. The third book was just very emotional and perfect on many levels, truly pushing out the care that each cat has for each other. I’ve read over fifty warrior books before this but the battle scene is one of those moments I’ll forever remember. It was just like nothing else I’ve read before, siblings killing each other, old friends fighting over some dumb decision. The whole StarClan scene with ghostly cats after the battle was amazingly written, with the passed cats forgiving each other for being so vicious and saying goodbye to their close ones who survived. I like the idea the way the concept of death and remembering was dealt with, although the characters killed off being some cats we were introduced to since the very first pages of this arc. I also found it hilarious how Clear Sky just became this outrageous disney villain that has his internal doubts yet he does the absolute worst decisions. Also yeah, really hate Tom in this book ✌️. I’ve always liked when the cats explored the human town in books and this book could satisfy anyone wanting to read about that (The way it was described when Lightning Tail was scooped up by a pair of humans who were just dumb and confused as always). What can I say? I can’t wait to read the next book even more now, this third book absolutely PEAKED

The first Battle is not what I expected it to be. It’s not bad and I still had a fun time with it, but it’s different.
The title is actually very misleading. The book is not about the first battle, yes at the end of the book the first battle happens. But for the Dutch translated version I had to read more than 300 pages of the book before the battle started. The main focus of the story is bout trying to make peace and find a way without fighting. The title is not only misleading but also a huge spoiler. It takes away the tension of the story because you know there will be a first battle, hence the title, so the build-up to the battle and the cats trying to make peace. As a reader you know they will fail and they will fight…
For me it took too long, they should have fought sooner or the title should be different.
Overall I love the characters, the battle (when it finally happened) was exciting, terrifying, and heartbreaking.
I didn't really like the idea of the whole "Dawn of the Clans" thing, but this is the book that changed mind. The first two weren't so exciting. It took me a three days to read them, and for me, that's a long time. With this book it took me a day to read it. It was hard to put it down. I've been reading the Warriors book for years and they never get old. :)
I loved, loved, loved it. It was so good. I like the ending, and how Gorse Fur and Wind Runner joined the group. But i cryed when Turtle Tail died :(. I don't know if this was in every book, but there was a bonus scene of how Gorse Fur and Wind Runner met. It was kinda sad at the beginning though. But I loved the bonus scene anyway. I highly recommend this book.

This is without a doubt my FAVORITE in the "DAWN OF THE CLANS"series! It is also is in my top 10 favorite books ever! I don't know if it's in the position in the top ten, but it is really close to my all time favorite books.
