Ana writes m/m romance and erotica. Her interest in hot guy-on-guy action was first sparked by reading scandalous Japanese mangas. A dirty secret she couldn’t resist. In a long bout of insanity – also known as her life — she decided to learn the language and escape to the land of sushi, sumo, and yaoi.

She’s since moved back to Europe to be with the love of her life – delicious European chocolate.

Now she resides in the sunny part of Germany where she fills her days chasing her dreams and writing about men in complicated relationships. Her family believes she’s writing “erotic manga stories.” She’s pleased they got the erotic part right, at least.

This is one incredible book. It's definitely one of the more captivating and original stories I've read for a very long time.

It's beautifully written, utterly heart wrenching but at the same time very insightful and uplifting.
I read it through the night and now the sun is rising. I would have left scorch marks on the pages if it were a paperback and I did not want it to end.

It's mainly a paranormal novel set in-between the waking world and the afterlife. There's a few overlapping genre's but I found the strongest one a to be a love story, in my opinion, not a romance, and that is rare these days. It also deals with domestic violence, rape, suicide, fantasy and yet it's contemporary as well, which makes for an interesting mix. So trigger warnings to all who need them but I personally didn't find them severe and the pay off is worth the soul destroying downside as it is turned around and begins to soars, right into an unexpected HEA.

I know it sounds dark and it is in places but there is also so much love amongst the hurt, but t's unrequited love. I'll say one thing though, it is just one extraordinary journey, literally. I don't want to actually discuss the book itself because it's too easy to give too much away. It is definitely a must read for everyone's 2016 reading list.

4.5 No Regrets Stars rounded up to 5 Stars!!

This was an amazing book written by Ana J. Phoenix that deals with a couple subjects we all have to face and that is living your life to the best of your ability, because at the end you want no regrets. Ms. Phoenix has taken a subject that many shy away from, death, and made it into a story that will capture your heart. The characters in this book are real. They have flaws, they have been unhappy, they don't feel like they got the best change at certain things -- having characters who are real allows the reader to really connect to the story. The setting is very creative, an after-life that is set on a passenger train with a conductor who is at times a little bit of a pain and mysterious.

Seth wakes up and finds himself alone at an abandoned train station, with no idea what happened, or how he got there. The train seems to call to him:

"Come. Come aboard. We are taking you where you need to be. Don't be afraid"

Once he gets on the train, the conductor explains to him that he is having a near-death experience; and while on this train he has to make a choice, stay or go back to his life. As Seth tries to come to terms with this weird situation, disoriented doesn't explain what he feels like only to them be escorted to his cabin and see his roommate, his best-friend - Carter. But, Carter isn't dead, why is he on this train? Come to find out that yes, Carter is dead and he has six stops to come to terms with his life and move on or he will be stuck. These two best friends are together in the after-life for a reason, they need to admit things to each other, overcome problems, deal with regrets, and accept what has come to pass. Sounds easy right? Well, just in-case they get stuck the train has two special rooms a library and a baggage room. In the library you will find a book with every single written communication ever addressed to you whether is was mailed/texted/emailed or even deleted it's there for you to view as you make peace with your life. The baggage room, its not where old luggage is stored.. no instead it is a room full of physical and emotional baggage you struggled with throughout your life. Oh and don't forget the windows that show you movie like scenes from your life so you can literally watch your life play out before your eyes! Yes Ms. Phoenix thought of it all in this book and this train is your last stop before eternity where you either come to grips or you become one of the lost souls to wander the after-life forever.

I just have to say that the entire concept of this story is amazing and unique! I love it! I cannot state enough how much the characters in this story were perfect for the story. Lets not forget that this is a romance story as well though, and when Seth and Carter both admit to each other that they have had crushes on each other for years.. Seth is floored because Carter has always been his straight best friend. Carter he is frustrated to say the least because he is dead - so what good does it do now to finally find out that his best-friend feels the same way for him?

As the two continue their journey together they realize that the more they come to trust each other and share with each other the clearer the choices become about Seth either staying or going back to live his life. Will these two find a way to be together or are they destined to just be friends?

For Never and Always is a book I recommend to all who have an open mind and are looking for a book that will make you think and warm your heart.

Sometimes you have a book on your shelf and you love the blurb, but still you don`t read it. Suddenly the time is right and then you can not imagine why you did not start it much earlier. But you know that maybe now was just the time.
This was absolutely happening when I read this book!
It honestly overwhelmed me! This was such an outstanding read and I found so many questions answered in it.
At the same time, it was so terribly sad that I wept half the time reading it.
It is about life and death and missed opportunities and postponing things that are important and suddenly realizing you ran out of time and doing all the stupid stuff, you forgot to do the important things in your life!
There is also a very troubling story about an abusive relationship, while crying I got so mad at Seth for taking the blame instead of hitting his abusive boyfriend.
I could not imagine how there could be a happy end in this story but there definitely is, even if it`s not in a traditional way, but still it was so heartwarming that it had me crying all over again!
This book will stay in my mind for a long time and that is always the best a story can achieve, so from my side easy 4.5 stars and a definite recommendation!!

Dear Book,

Damn you for making me leak out of my face. I don't really do that unless it's an animal story, people stories don't give me the weepies. But this book and these characters? They did. Now my eyes are puffy and I have a stupid weepy headache. From the weeping.

Dammit.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I have to go tell everyone I've ever met that I love them.

Sincerely,

Ann

Very emotional book but I'm sad to say I probably would have liked it a lot more if I had had some warning about the many triggers in this book. Some of them hit very close to home and I either avoid such triggers or I, at least, need to prepare myself accordingly. I could have read reviews before starting the book, I suppose, but this shouldn't be necessary. Dear author, if you don't put those warnings in the blurb because you don't want to spoil anything, at least put them at the beginning of the book on a separate page so that readers can decide if they want to read them, or make sure readers can find them elsewhere, preferably before they spend money on a book they would otherwise avoid.

So, the story was good but there were a lot of serious topics included and because there were so many, I felt like only a few of them were dealt with in depth.

The characters were great and the conclusion to the story was very satisfying and IMO the best ending this book could have had.

Now for those of you who want to know about the triggers. I'm putting them into spoiler tags because yes, some of them are spoilery, and I don't want to force them on you if you don't want to know: I'm sorry if I forgot anything but like I said earlier, there are a lot of potential triggers in this book.

Have you ever read a book that stayed with you and keeps vying for attention even while reading another book, or sleeping or eating or in the grocery store? This book is it. I still tear up thinking about it. This story grabbed at my soul from Chapter 1 and has not left my body, soul or mind. It has ALL the feels. It is that AMAZING even though I went through a box a tissues.

Ana Phoenix was creative and inventive on how to deal with subjects that most shy away from. Suicide, Cancer, Death. Death is usually grouped with words like sad, ugly, forbidden, perhaps taboo. In this story, I was saddened and heart-crushed, especially listening to Seth and his current life, as well as Carter, as what could have been. Ms. Phoenix wrote these two characters with such life, ironically in death, that you feel their sadness, their hopes, their frustration, and their love. This story was written so beautifully that I felt like I was there perhaps as an angel looking down at them, hoping that I could bring them with me when they accepted their life with no regrets. The secondary characters; Sandra, Eli and even the conductor were also felt. Their contribution to the story was short, yet left that impression on you that you wanted to get to know them. This story touched on so many subjects, and as the layers peeled away and secrets were revealed, you felt the compassion, the deep love and respect these two have for each other.

In the end though, through all the tears, death is not sad, ugly or pain. It is beautiful. Love is beautiful. It will always stand the test of time (and with these two, 80+ years), and will always be there for soulmates. Carter and Seth may NEVER have had each other in the living world, but will ALWAYS have each other in the after-life. I just can’t say enough how this story touched my soul, accept to grab your tissues, and take a ride on this very moving, very touching, very visual and heartfelt train of a ride. You will not be disappointed.

And now I am crying like a baby.
I did well. I held it together (just about) until the epilogue and then the floodgates opened.
What a beautiful story.
Seth and his best friend Carter end up on a train full of dead people.
Carter is dead but Seth has had a near death experience and must make the decision as to whether he wants to pass over or return to his life.
I am not going to say anything more about this book as you really have to read it for yourself.

For Never and Always by Ana J. Phoenix

M/M romance
Triggers: rape, physical and emotional abuse, death, suicide,
I was given this book for an honest review by Inked Rainbow Reads.

Holy Moly, this is an AMAZING story. Grab the tissues before starting, because once you start, you're not going to want to put this book down. Phoenix was a magician in her ability to paint the story of Carter and Seth. Theirs is a love that truly transcends time, space and everything in between.

When you're put on the train, it is a journey that you can't help but fear and wonder about all wrapped in to one experience. The reader will marvel at the simplicity, complexity and unfairness of all of the characters' involved.

While this story is not long, it never feels like a short story because of everything that is packed in to the story. The flashback and flashforward style was so effective. I think that if this had been written in a different style, it would not have had as much of an impact.

Carter was and has remained Seth's first true love, crush, soul mate. Despite all that life has thrown at them, that has not changed. Phoenix wrote their story so completely and with such care that you can't help but weep for their relationship.

I cannot say enough good things about this story - you will want to read, to love, to hate, to cry and re-read this again. It is moving, but not drawn out. Phoenix wrote this story so well that I will actively seek out more of her style.

A whole lot to like about this book. If you enjoy romance with some tears then this could be a very good read for you. Please tread carefully if rape or suicide are triggers.

I have 25 status updates on here so that should help any potential reader get the gist.

Beautiful concept but this was just okay for me :-/!!
My opinions are in no way meant to be a reflection of the contents of this book. It's apparent I am very much the minority in the face of so many others who adore this story. This book didn't wow me the way I had anticipate it would, but you should give it a try, because hey, it might just wow you!!

******

Update @ 1%: // Well, this one is going to be much MUCH darker and challenging that I had originally anticipated. Still, I'm ready and am eager to embark on this book's journey. Let's do this :-)!!

Note: Apparently there are MANY serious triggers here ... so this book better have an AMAZING HEA!! Just sayin'!

This is a heartfelt, emotional read that touches on several important subjects. Strong content warnings for a somewhat graphic rape scene and a lot of discussion of intimate partner violence and suicide. I was not aware of the rape or suicide; those elements are not clear either in the blurb or in a separate warning, and there is no warning in the front of the book.

I’m torn about how I feel after reading it. There were lots of things I loved, and some things I really disliked. I’ll start with the things I thought were good.

I adored Seth. I thought he was terrific. I have a very strong preference for geeks and femmes, and what I liked was that Seth wasn’t over-the-top. He was not at all a stereotype, even though because of his circumstances he easily could have been drawn that way. He was simply delightful to read about.

I liked Carter as well. I was over the moon at so much of the way his bisexuality was written. I did cringe a bit when he seemed to go back on it, but as his story unfolded, his rich inner life and his contemplation about who he was emerged. It was incredibly well done, particularly in relation to how he was clear about his love for both Rachel and Seth.

Overall, I liked the story. I was wary about how the themes surrounding Seth’s near-death would be handled, and there were a few cringey moments, but on the whole, I thought that was well done too. I appreciated the sensitivity and the frank talk. I’m not entirely convinced I agree with the book’s apparent conclusions, but that doesn’t change the fact that there were some terrific moments. I do wish I’d had some warning, though, because the subject matter was pretty intense.

I loved the resolution. I very nearly did a fist pump and a happy dance for Seth, and the surprise twist was great. I kept wondering how everything would wrap up, torn between what I saw as the only two possibilities. I’m obviously not going to spoil it, but it was the absolute best possible ending for the story and was satisfying all around.

As for the things I didn’t care for, there weren’t many, but they stood out to me in a way which left me uncomfortable and needing some time to process.

Ultimately, I did enjoy the story, and I’m glad I pushed past the section where I felt the story was a bit lacking. I ended up liking, but not loving, this one.

REVIEWED FOR PRISM BOOK ALLIANCE

If I could give this book more than 5 stars I would and I don’t often get to say that.

It took me weeks to garner the bravery I felt this story would require – I’ll freely admit when I read the blurb my initial thoughts were “hell no!” I’ve read and previously reviewed Ana’s books here on Prism but I was ready to pass this one over rather than let it devastate me. It did devastate me but not until the last 20% and not in the way I expected either, so if any of you out there are feeling like me when you read that blurb – fear not – it’s not as painful as you are imagining and totally worth the ride.

I like the idea that in death there is a train that takes you onto your next journey, not only that it provides everything you require to get you to that place. You can’t get off that train until you make peace with yourself and the life you have led. It’s not a tool to make you feel guilty or bad more a gentle push to open your eyes to things you may have missed. There is very little on this train – a place to eat, a place to rest, a library and a baggage hold. Each of these places are significant and cleverly thought out.

You are compelled to board this train yet you are not compelled to leave. To not leave is dire but to get to a point where you want off is often difficult and painful.

Many reviews have already outlined the story so I feel no need to. I will say that is a romance like no other that I’ve read. It is often painful as Seth recounts his abuse and rape but his journey with Carter, his best friend and long-time secret crush, gives him the space and the ability to start to heal. It gives him strength and finally it gives him the promise that with patience he will get what his heart truly desires.

A Joyfully Jay review.

4.5 stars

When this book opens, Seth is confused as to where he is. He can remember everything about his life except for the last few moments. As he realizes where he is and that he has a chance to return to the living, that is his goal. He just has to wait for the next stop. He does recognize Carter immediately when he sees him, but then questions how his best friend can possibly be there.

Seth does wonder if his current situation is the result of actions taken by his abusive boyfriend, Tony. For the past three years, Seth has become more isolated and trapped in his life as he bends to Tony’s needs. It had become so bad that Seth let his friendship with Carter slide a bit as Tony was extremely jealous. Seth had always been secretly in love with Carter, but Carter never gave Seth any indication that he was anything but straight, but Carter wasn’t completely honest with Seth.

The book takes place almost entirely on the train with a few well placed flashbacks or memories of Seth and Carter’s friendship, as well as Seth’s abusive home life. The train offers a place to push aside your regrets, a necessity to be able to move on, and there are specialty rooms available on the train to confront those lingering issues. Carter is in danger of not being able to let go of his regrets and becoming a lost soul. Seth can’t imagine a life without Carter in it and doesn’t want to leave him.

This was such a surprise. The storyline is really not something I would typically read, but I'm so glad I did. It was such a good mix of everything good. (Insert ugly cry here) And of course, the ending. So sweet and touching. (more tears)

Some graffiti is art if it's shouting about pain or referring to cultural identity, etc., (tagging is just an asshole thing to do) but it's a crime that isn't victim-less. It destroys beauty and serenity for others. It forces difficult work on those that have to clean it up. It lowers property values which doesn't just affect the often working class owners but lowers the perception of safety which then lowers the actual safety and soon you have a previously lower income but safe and community oriented neighborhood and have a place where people are afraid to go outside at night. It's selfish. True Graffiti art can be done where it won't hurt anyone--an abandoned building, your own house, a sign like the one near my old house that is for an urban men's hair salon that looks like graffiti, a mural, a building already covered in tags that no one is cleaning up, etc. Random graffiti, especially tagging, pisses me off.

Cool to have a male who's been physically abused and to talk about how hard that is for a man to admit. Cool to acknowledge that you can .

I didn't see that coming. But I saw the "twist" well before even the foreshadowing.

Yeah, Seattle rocks for nerds.

How can this possibly have a happy ending?

A happy ending kind of sort of. Still, very good.

For Never and Always is the best book I’ve read in a while. This made the whole experience refreshing despite the somewhat heavier themes that were discussed inside.

The idea might not be unique but it was handled and elaborated in such a great way that I couldn’t put the book down for hours.

I’m not a fan of friends-to-lovers generally but in this case, the author has crafted the relationship and emotions between Seth and Carter so well that they seemed completely real and made you want root for them. The underlying tragedy added bitterness to the sweetness of a love found in a time that wasn’t right at all. Or every time is right for such love?

There were a lot of serious topics touched on but never in the didactic way I’m so tired of. They were entwined in the plot and the story in the best way possible to make you feel and think. I wish there were more books like this one in the romance genre!

If you only enjoy fluff and escapist romances this is maybe not the book for you.

Still, For Never and Always is a book I’d always recommend as one of my favorites.

An interesting take on what happens when you die. Seth "wakes up" on a train station and doesn't know how he got there. The friendly eerie conductor talks him on and takes him to his berth where he meets his childhood friend Carter. But things are different on this train - the baggage carriage and library aren't what they seem and the dining car serves your favourites without a menu in sight!! But Carter is dead and only has a few stops to make his peace with the old world and Seth has only a few stops also to decide whether to die or return to the living. Between them they come to a decision as Seth remembers more about his life before his train journey - but then the spanner in the works - what will they decide? - can they decide in time or will they both forever be left between worlds?

A quick read that definitely requires the tissues.

This book was pure magic. It took my breath away. I was enthralled with this book by the end of the first chapter and I only grew further invested in the story as I read on.

This book is difficult to describe in terms of plot without giving too much away, so I'm not going to try. What I can tell you is that this book set itself apart in every way imaginable.

Eerily beautiful. Whimsical. Reflective. Sad. Wistful. Sensual. Cathatic. Singular love. Authentic depth and emotion in a dreamlike fantasy. Different. Other... In the very best way.

Highly recommended for anyone who knows how to read.

So amazing, emotional, and an intriguing concept. The use of an old steam train was so unique and well handled as the setting was brilliant. A near death experience, a reflection of life, of missed loved, embracing life, and knowing love is everlasting. Book should come with a warning, keep a box of tissue close at hand.

** I WAS GIVEN THIS BOOK, BY THE AUTHOR, IN RETURN FOR AN HONEST REVIEW **
Reviewed for Divine Magazine

WARNING: Whatever you do, do NOT and I repeat, do not read this book! Ever. Not ever. Not without a mountain of tissues, the privacy to ugly cry and a certainly not before bed, when you're going to be up all night thinking about this horrible, cruel story that I will never forget!

TRIGGER WARNINGS: rape, domestic abuse, suicide, cancer, death.

~

This is my first story by Ana and I was warned beforehand that it was a tearjerker. That's kind of why I chose to review it. I'm a sucker for a weepy and this was that ten times over.

I'm going to apologise now if nothing I say makes sense or if I ramble a little. It's not my fault. Really it's not. I literally just finished binge-reading this book and all 170 pages were fantastic. Utter perfection. There wasn't one moment where I stopped to think that the plot was going the wrong direction or that I couldn't read anymore.

It was hard. Really hard. The author tackled some pretty heavy topics that weren't easy to read – rape, domestic abuse, gang-rape, domestic rape, cancer and suicide. They weren't just skimmed over either. Thankfully, though one of the rape scenes was on page, it was mercifully treated, so that we didn't really register the brutality over the mental torture. It was hard to read, but all the issues were treated with great respect.

Right off the bat, the story had a strong start. I was intrigued by this original concept and curious as to how it might progress. A train with compartments – cabins, baggage and a library – that transported people through various stations and gave them time to come to terms with their death was brilliant. Not just the idea, but the execution. The library in particular, of letters both sent and unsent, including e-mails, texts and scribbled notes, absolutely broke my heart. It genuinely made me think of those typed but never posted Facebook status' that we all write to vent our feelings, but never post because we think it would sound silly or be taken the wrong way. Even now, the very thought makes me kind of speechless. It's something we all do, but I've never stopped to wonder what they might say if I had a book of my own to read.

When Carter and Seth met so quickly, within the first 5% of the book, I was surprised. But it worked in the long term; it made for a journey, both in their relationship, friendship and within their overall train journey. Both characters were incredible – Carter, the skeptic and Seth, the believer – yet they complimented each other in how different they were. Both had sad stories, but their friendship from childhood never faltered, even through all the fights, the misunderstandings and all the secrets they reveal to each other on the train.

In terms of the plot, I'm going to be brutal and just do bullet points, because I can hardly think straight after the emotional rollercoaster I've just been on.
Good things – a dual POV, so that we see Carter and Seth's lives. The overall plot and execution, as well as the attention to detail and the side characters, that helped each main character grow or learn.
Bad things – there are quite a few backwards quotation marks, a few repeat/missing words, commas outside of quotation marks. The formatting was a little wobbly, with scenes/POV's separated at first with the age old scene dividers *** then later separated by a single line space and the first line of the paragraph in all caps. It's a little inconsistent.

Personally, not one of these 'bad things' mattered. Not when you have a story this fulfilling. I can't even tell you the best parts about this book, because that would be unfair. It's not a book you pick up lightly and read a few chapters of, in between doing other things.

This is an experience. And it broke my heart.

~

FAVOURITE QUOTES

““You know, I'm glad I'm not leaving anyone behind.”
What about me? Seth shoved the thought aside before he could voice it.”

““It's like sometimes I want him to get mad. Like, really mad.” Because once Tony had flown off the handle, things were better for a while. Like doing a system reset. Forcing a reboot. Hoping that it would last this time.”

Seth and Carter have been friends since forever. They haven't kept in touch over the last couple years because Seth's controlling and abusive boyfriend, Tony, has isolated him from his few friends and family. Seth felt this was acceptable, to some degree, because he harbored a long-time crush on his straight best friend. A good boyfriend wouldn't talk to guys he finds attractive, right? And, especially not when his boyfriend doesn't want him to do so, right? Besides, Carter's at college, and he has a girlfriend. He doesn't want to hear Seth's troubles...

The book opens with Seth on a strange train platform, uncertain how he arrived there, and wondering how to get home so he can make Tony's dinner. Immediately the reader knows that something awful has happened to Seth, and that Tony has likely had some role in it. A ghostly train arrives and Seth steps aboard. The conductor gives him the low down--it's a train of souls on the way to their final destination. Thing is, Seth's not dead...yet. He has the power to step off the train at any station, as long as the doors remain clear to his vision. If he lingers, however, that option will disappear, and Seth will be dead. While Seth sorts out if he should disembark, he's shown to his cabin, and his roommate is Carter.

Carter has only 6 stops remaining until he's a lost soul. He knows this, knows he must make peace with himself and his choices, but he's struggling. He hid his disease from the two people he loved most in the world--Seth is one of them--and he's saddled with regret for never telling Seth that he loved him.

Even now, as they share space and final moments on this train, both Seth and Carter are shielding their deepest secrets from the other. Carter wants Seth off the train, right now, but Seth won't leave. He can't remember how he came to be on the platform, and he needs to solve this mystery before he decides if he wants to return. Did Tony beat him into a coma? Was is some other trauma? This makes a difference to Seth; he doesn't want to return to the living if he's only going to make the same mistakes.

Carter watches the stops tick off, and is unable to let go of his past--mostly because his love for Seth is so strong. When he finally confesses, it's not to the reaction he expected. Seth is angry that they never had their chance, and frustrated that Carter hid his bisexuality. They do work it out, over the course of the train ride, and they get their collective houses in order, too.

I'm not going to say more about the plot. It's fantastic, and heart-rending, and tumultuous. I feel better having read this book, not for any sense of spirituality, but for thinking about my own regrets and soul burdens, and considering how best to let them go. This is a love story, at it's core. Seth and Carter have an epic love for each other that was never acknowledged in life, but this ride of reckoning allows it time to bloom.

Small flashbacks allow the backstory to be inserted at poignant moments. The clock is always ticking, however, and Seth wishes to linger with Carter forever. Will he? Carter died young, and his regrets are many. Can he clear his soul and enter the afterlife? Or will he be one of the tormented lost souls that claw at the doors of the train whenever it stops? I will say that the book has a happy ending, even if it's not a convenient as it could have been. I liked that. Hard choices make for good conflict and interesting stories. At each turn we could have had the "easy" answer, and we really never get that, here, which is a credit to the story. I loved the idea of soul mates meeting as souls, and it's very well handled here. It's even a bit steamy, which was awesome. Highly recommend!

"When Death Isn't The End", well honestly I don't know where to go from there. It's taken me two days to write this review even though I could not get this book out of my head. I actually talked to several people about it while I was reading it and once I was finished. This one single book will stick with me for awhile. It made me think about life now and life once I'm gone. Ms. Phoenix wrote something that was not just about the love the two main characters have/had for each other but about the reality of expressing those feelings every day to those we love, don't hold back what you feel, don't hold back what needs to make you happy. What if it is true? What if there is a place we go like the big black train that Seth and Carter end up on? What if a near-death experience can change everything? What if the one person you truly love is actually waiting for you on the other side?
I can admit when I first started reading the book I was thinking "what did I get myself into, what is going on?", but the more I read the more I was yanked in, not just pulled in but yanked in with a pull so hard I could not put the book down. I finally had to close my Kindle and get some sleep but I still thought about the book the whole next day at work.
So many things intrigued me,... the truth that Carter could no longer hold back, the guilt he felt for not being honest while he was alive, the desperation in Seth's letters needing help and the absolute love they both felt for each other.
By the end of this book I was crying, not full on ugly crying but pretty darn close.

My first thought before reading this book is that I'm going to cry. It just couldn't end well. I want my happy ending. What got me to finally start reading this book beside intriguing blurb is that I trust this author's imagination. That she will give me my happy ending in a way I don't expect to receive it.

Seth is having a near death experience and has a choice to make. Get off and live? or move on to afterlife? You would think that the choice be simple if only he didn't unexpectedly finds out that his estranged, secret love best friend has died. Unlike Seth, Carter has died and has few stops to clear his mind before they reach.

Overall I love the concept of the train and the different compartments. The flow of the story work especially how everything unfolded with Seth. Bonus points to the author for not dismissing Carter's feeling about his ex girlfriend.

ARC of For Never and Always provided by the author in exchange for an honest review.

2016 Rainbow Awards Honorable Mention: For Never and Always by Ana J. Phoenix
1) This novel evoked a wistful, tender mood with its beautiful cover, and that mood carried through in the story. This was a emotional story wonderfully told.
2) It was touching, and unlike anything I have ever read. This book took the cliched trope of Dead People and made it fresh. Carter, though dead, grows as much as Seth. Phoenix tackles the difficult topic of male-on-male domestic violence and it's aftermath with grace and authenticity.

This book is a fantastic multi-leveled story. It is heart-wrenching on the most superficial level. As I thought about it I found deeper meaning in much of it. If you are just looking for a well written book to read this one is it. If you are interested in a book that makes you think and evaluate death, abuse, suicide, etch this is it as well.

This story broke my heart.

Reading this romance, I knew it's not going to have the happy ending I wanted. But it gave me the ending that was right.

It was a little hard to go through, because it was just so sad to see Seth and Carter finally finding truth in their relationship but under the worst of circumstances. This story was unconventional but it worked.

Thoroughly enjoyed this read. There are serious triggers here y'all. Suicide and rape. Abuse, denial, fear, illness, and regrets. Through all of this, this story has a happy ending. An intense page turner. So well put together that all I could do is smile at the ending. Beautiful. I recommend it.
