"Gentleness is about knowing and naming the hurt in your soul, embracing it, and, in that same breath, removing the power it has over you." - Annie Meehan

An authentic and empowering self-help read with useful and practical tips/exercises on how to change life for the better. Annie Meehan (the author and motivational speaker) has written a thoughtful and inspiring book on ways to put fear, anxiety and life's traumas into perspective. She uses her own life experiences and trauma to convey a message of hope, faith and courage that enables the reader to feel empowered to live an exceptional life. Annie's anecdotal accounts of her childhood and past traumas was shockingly sad and raw, I applaud her bravery and spirit in reconstructing her life, which is indeed exceptional. Recommended if you're going through a tough time, over thinking stuff, struggling with identity, relationships or simply after some tips to live a better life.

Other notable quotes:

"I was buried in sorrow not because of his absence, but because he had always been absent. I grieved for what wasn't and what would never be." - Annie Meehan

"And the day came when the risk to remain tight in a bud was more painful than the risk it took to blossom" - Anaïs Nin

I saw Annie at a brief seminar a few years ago for this book. I was throughly enthralled by this woman. She made me feel differently on how I see people around me and myself. After this event I couldn’t help it and I purchased this book. I used to work in the mental health field and found one client that I thought might like it. So I read to her the entire book. We talked about how she could see the chapters in her life and how to incorporate Annie’s teachings and truly enjoyed it. When I was reading it I also found myself thinking about how her teachings impact me and those that I care about the most. I plan to read this book for myself and talk about it with my husband again so we can talk about the meaning together.

At first I thought this book would not be much value to me because I had a good life growing up. But as I read it I realized how much value it added. It reminded me the importance of taking care of me and being kind to myself. Sometimes we are so busy caring for everyone else we forget about ourselves. I plan to purchase multiple copies of this book and give it as a gift to those I know who are going through struggles or those who are starting a new adventure in life. This book is great for when you are on hard times or when you are looking for the courage to start your next adventure. This book is well worth the read.

I loved this book as an easy-to-read, inspirational book that almost anyone could take something from and put into action. Reading Annie's story was eye-opening and gasp-inducing at some points. Her resilience and poise are admirable. She doesn't pity herself and won't let you feel pity either. She takes her lessons earned and focuses on the days ahead and how she can impact the world.

Sadly this book was archived before I could download to read it. It has been added to my TBR and I’ll keep an eye out for it again in the future or at my local library.

Annie has truly shared her life experience. All of us will learn and take away a lot from reading, Be the Exception. I loved the section on "keeping yourself healthy should be your number one concern." Be the Exception, is filled with nothing but wisdom.

I'm going to keep it in my "favorite book" pile! I want to continue to be inspired on my personal journey of transformation and I'll refer back often to several of the pages that I've marked!
