As the chase continues into the extraordinary seascape of a mysterious ocean, where sea monsters reign, deadly mermaids hunt, and pirates skulk, Parsifal learns that staying alive on the high seas is no easy task; especially when being hunted down by the vengeful and determined Lady Vasille. As beautiful, deadly, and driven as ever, Lady Vasille will stop at nothing to retrieve the compass and the power it contains. In this fantastically wrought, nautical fantasy adventure, McCallum J. Morgan transports the reader into a truly magical realm.
McCallum J. Morgan writes steampunk fantasy, alternate history, and science fiction, mixing in the mythical and the macabre. He also dabbles in the dark arts of painting and costuming. Inspired at a young age by the fantasy novels he read voraciously, he set out to become an author. After many failed attempts to write various books, he became superstitious and at last approached what he termed 'AAAB' or Attempt-at-a-book, so as not to jinx the thing. It worked. His first novel was published when he was nineteen and now, at 23, he has a full trilogy of steampunk fantasy, called the Weather Casters Saga, along with the standalone horror-comedy, Ambulatory Cadavers. His writing is inspired by the fiction he loves: old myth, classic horror, and the kinds of books where the characters leap off the page. A bit eccentric, he prefers to appear at signing events and comicons in book-related costumes which he sews himself. He is also a self proclaimed amateur artist, with a predilection for watercolors and coffee...occasionally intermixed by accident.
Like many sequels, this is a lot slower than the first novel. Rather than travelling all over creation, they spend most of the book trapped in a pirate world. There are some revelations, and they lose the compass for a while.
Not bad, but definitely slower than the last book.
This book was great! A very satisfying sequel to A Hole In The Ice. I won it in an author giveaway, and I am really excited to share my review with you!
The characterization really took off and almost from the start we see Parsifal grow into a brave (but kind! Ever so kind) admirable young man! I am really proud of Parsifal in this one. I also loved how we saw more of Lady Vasille and learned more of her background. She is a fascinating character.
The setting was just marvelous! I loved the nautical theme and world this book takes place in. There are delightful new characters like Fou, Wilma Jones, and Dioktes. It reminded me of a Pirates of the Caribbean adventure, maybe in the sequels, in the best way! This would be the perfect book to take on a cruise or on a vacation to the Caribbean.
The plot was fast-paced and action-packed! I loved it! Never a dull moment. I loved the Tan Noz and the concept of the Sea, the Land, and the Port. And YES I did find dancing in this one!
I would definitely recommend this sequel. An adventure on the high seas for sure!
