I'm sorry. I'm lost. He blatantly shamelessly used her, threw her under the bus (strictly FIGURATIVELY speaking) and what did he do to redeem himself apart from apologising?
He said his dad only loved his mum more than the business, could he say the same for himself? He clearly cared more about the business than her. How does he prove his love? By being there? Well her dad and sister were willing to be there as well as that'd have served there purpose. She made a valid point. How was he any different to them? Just because he kept yelling at her threatening not to compare him to them, doesn't change the fact.
Since he loves her so much, does he give up the business he hurts her so much for? Not that I recall. He had his cake and ate it too. He basically had the best of both world. He was a selfish bastard who didn't deserve the second chance!
Too stars simply because she temporarily had a backbone and because she booted the worthless father and sister!

After reading His for a Price https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/2... which I was not mad about, I was surprised....I actually liked the follow-up....yes, I liked it so much more than book #1!!!
Not having been “enamoured” with Chase in the previous book, I did have some misgivings...would I actually like the guy???? He certainly did not “grab” me!!! But what a turnaround!!!! Maybe it had something to do with the heroine...Zara Eliott...she was such a fabulous character. I totally adored her from the first time we meet her....and what could be anything weirder than taking her sister’s place as a bride .....to marry Chase Whitaker (who had been blackmailed by her father to marry her gorgeous sister!!!).
Zara is a totally adorable and likeable character. Despite all the “shit” that’s been dealt to her in life by her father and sister....she still remains a totally lovable person. The way she deals with Chase is so endearing and engaging.
How could I resist someone who loves Daphne du Maurier and Phyllis A. Whitney’s books......i love those two authors!!!!! Yes, Zara and I totally connected!!!!!!

Loved the setting...a Gothic house in Poughkeepsie....

This was an okay, if somewhat of a phone-it-in, tropey MOC romance.
The h is offered up in a MOC the day of the wedding instead of her horrible, favorited older sister by the even more horrible father. He needs a daughter to marry the H because somehow, someway he can get control over the business. I think I was skimming as I failed to see the connection as to how the marital connection would help. Once again, bizarre wedding fashions allow the h to get to the altar before the H knows whats what. Frankly, he could care less who is at the altar as he disliked the bitchy sister. Her offer of a oral gratification the first time they met was not quite the lovely gesture she thought.
The h is your typical curvy redhead egghead that has no idea how gorgeous her real curves are to men. In an attempt to show the H what a loss he has taken in getting stuck with her, she stands up in the bath and he is gobsmacked. Lust, lust, lust.
The H is a guilt-driven man that cares for nothing except the family company; it's the only way he can honor his father and mother. This is the part it derailed for me. His guilt was ridiculous. Either he wants to wallow in the martyr pool or his father is second in line for bad parenting.
I am not a fan of tortured heroes as most reasons for the tortured part are pretty flimsy. This was unconvincing to me as there is no way a decent parent would have allowed their child to take this on without therapy. Yeah, I know! What am I thinking of allowing reality to rear its ugly head.
Back to present day, the H and h get closer, have sex, and do the tango of emotional distance. THEY NEVER LEAVE THE HOUSE! The father and incredibly vile sister make threatening and nasty calls to the h which she kind of lets roll off her back. She's going to go back to her Masters degree in something, and she only agreed to help Pops as one last ditch effort to get him to love her. She has come to the realization that that is not going to happen.
Showdown at a New Year's Eve party. The H and his BIL have majority holding; he admits to the crowd that he was strong armed into marrying the h. He gets her to confess it as well which leaves her dad out of the business picture and her a little embarrassed but, more importantly, without the love of her life.
She goes back to her home, the nasty family shows up to berate her, and, then thank goodness, she tells them, "Too bad." They stomp out. The H arrives, apologetic he had to use her like that, but he loves her and blah, blah, blah.
It was okay. I really wanted an epilogue of the h driving by a used car lot only to see bad daddy selling used cars like the slime he is, and the sister losing her looks to bad botox.

Not a fan on non virginal heroines when I am reading a Harlequin Presents.

Being a fan of non-virginal heroines and the healthy reality of a 26 year old who has had two prior long term intimate relationships I felt this was pertinent to mention. I don't mind a virginal heroine but it needs to be realistic.
I really liked this heroine. She has a very hostile, dysfunctional family who have continually hammered on her self esteem and have never treated her with love or respect. Despite this she meets life with good humor and kindness. Although some of her good humor is her defense mechanism to never let her father or sister know that their taunts and criticisms are getting to her. However, to some degree they have convinced her that she is the unloved,fat, ugly sister.
The H is hot and a much publicized playboy. He also has a traumatic back story and really doesn't feel he deserves to loved. They are both manipulated into an arranged marriage for business purposes. Both the victim of her fathers greedy manipulation. They spend the first month of their marriage gradually developing feelings and ultimately sharing their trauma's but also moving toward the ultimate end. The H plans to throw the h to the wolves in order to out-maneuver her father and to save his deceased father's business.
Ultimately, the h's sweet and sometimes sarcastic humor raise this from 3*'s to 3.5*s. The end is sweet, the grovel is adequate, and the epilogue ties up loose ends.

2 stars for the romance plus one star for the hero actually going through with his “revenge” and not wimping out.
Why the announcement to the board was revenge is not really clear. It seemed pretty evident that the hero was blackmailed into marriage and the heroine *knew* he was being blackmailed, But the H/h seemed to think this was awful, so that was some nice angst.
The rest of the claustrophobic romance was the usual. Both the H/h believed they weren’t worthy of love. The heroine because she was heavier than her sister and not as beautiful. The hero because he thinks he should have prevented his mother’s death and therefore is a “monster.” But sex healed all.
Hero is the brother of the heroine of His for a Price and his understanding of that traumatic event that killed his mother is different from his sister’s.
Heroine sensibly pointed out that he wasn’t to blame. And twenty years later he finally considered it. *headdesk* What a waste of miserable years.
It’s even worse when in the epilogue
Vintage has all the details in her review – including what *should* have happened to the h’s evil sister and father.

I liked this slightly less than His for a Price, but that's because I fell gaga for Nicodemus. However, Chase is scrumptious in all his dysfunction. He truly believes he's a terrible person. He's focused on getting the thorn out of his side, one Amos Elliot, and more than willing to use his forced marriage to Amos' daughter. The fact that he marries the wrong daughter throws a wrench in his plans. Because while he was fully willing to use and discard Arielle, Zara makes him feel things that he can't dismiss and write off.
I really liked that Crews twists one of the HP themes on its head. While Zara is a blackmailed bride, she does so willingly, and she really doesn't have anything to lose. She can go back to a decent life after this marriage sham is over. She agrees because for once, she wants to prove her worth to her father, and stepping up and marrying Chase could very well do that. She doesn't expect to have some very powerful feelings for Chase, and not just lust. Chase is very damaged, and she knows it, but something keeps making her reach out to him.
I like virgin heroines a lot. But it's also refreshing to read a book where the heroine isn't a virgin, and the hero doesn't have some sexual allure over her just because she's sexually naive. I also liked that Zara was curvy/plump and she was okay with her body, even knowing that society wasn't. At first Chase had this image of perfection based on the media and being in the public eye that a woman should be skinny/bony. But he finds Zara's curves very sexy and realized that what his public image called him to select in his girlfriends wasn't really what he found appealing, deep down. I think that Chase and Zara and beautifully matched in both their strengths and their dysfunction. Zara doesn't have to change herself to make Chase fall for her, and Chase can't compartmentalize and put her into a box. Chase comes to realize that there is healing available for him and that he isn't the monster he believes himself to be. he can let go of that guilt that he carried around on his back for too many years.
This is a sexy and modern take on an arranged marriage. While the climax felt a bit awkward in how things unfold and the fact that Chase doesn't get why Zara feels so betrayed, the ending more than makes up for it. I like the closure that both siblings, Chase and Mattie gain in the situation with their mother's death so many years ago, something that destroyed them so much emotionally.

I thought this was a damn good read. Yeah, the writing is heavy and the dialogue was lighter than I'm used to but Crews spins a yarn so well I couldn't help but become engaged. While the story concept wasn't unique the 'telling' felt rather original and I thought Chase was seriously hot. Then again I like em' cold and a overly arrogant. Fair warning. Overall I was charmed!

Revenge and marriage of convenience are two of my favorite tropes and I think that is one of the reason I enjoyed His for Revenge so much. The revenge plot is superbly executed and the story is written in the author’s usual amazing manner. I liked this one much better than the first part, mainly because I loved the characters in this one.
Zara is an awesome heroine who has great taste in books and has some amazing one liners. She had a terrible family and when she finally stood up to them, I wanted to clap for her. Chase is a charismatic hero who does not like being manipulated and had a traumatic past which has greatly affected his future. The main characters were forced into a situation they both resented but had no choice. I loved the way they found solace in each other and discovered how life had treated them very similarly but in different ways. Their journey was worth reading and I enjoyed every moment of the same. The romance was engaging, passionate and had some really good dialogues.

Zara Elliot has always tried to be a good daughter to a father so selfish and scheming he makes Scrooge look like Santa Claus. Amos Elliot forces Zara to marry a business associate after her sister, Ariella, the intended bride bails at the last minute. He cares nothing for Zara’s happiness being the type of man, “…who collected money and power the way other fathers collected stamps, and Zara had never been any good at standing up to him anyway.” The “fun” part is nobody mentioned this last minute change to the groom. Zara finds herself in a sham marriage to the “infamous” Chase Whitaker; a handsome British playboy/corporate magnate with “…dark blue eyes, that thick dark hair and that devastatingly athletic body of his…” who only has one thing on his agenda: revenge.
Zara has spent her life making accommodations for her self-centered, shallow, appearance-minded family. While they have lived wealthy society, tabloid stalked lives, she has been working on her graduate degree in English Literature. Chase agreed to the marriage to save the family business, but while finding himself married to Zara a shock, “it made no difference to his plans.” Chase is haunted by ghosts that keep him in an emotionally dark, guilt ridden place. As he and Zara spend a month in seclusion, he begins to understand that Zara is a women worth far more than her family’s wealth and position. She is possibly someone who could heal his pain and give more meaning to his life than wresting the family company away from her father.
I enjoyed the clever dialogue as well as the intelligent, witty heroine and her swoonworthy Byronic, alpha male hero. It’s an interesting trope that Zara’s master thesis is on Gothic fiction so she is quite primed for a broody, handsome, wild husband who has dark secrets, and who takes her to live in an old stone mansion in the countryside where the bleak winter weather makes for a good setting. Romance and classic literature fans, especially those who enjoy literary allusion, will be well pleased.

Zara is a very realistic 26 year old, non-virgin, who tries desperately to please her family. She's the type of character who is much more realistic and relatable, and when her forced nuptials leave her alone with the very rich and handsome Chase, she makes a very realistic attempt at making the most of the situation, of course gaining the admiration of her new husband along the way. The beginning of the book was a little confusing to me, one sister slotting in for the other made very little sense and it took a while for it to all fall into place.

Zara's father is holding Chase's business to ransom on the condition that Chase marry his favourite daughter and Zara's sister. However, at the last minute, the sister skips out of the deal and Zara is brought forward to be Chase's replacement bride. Once they're married though, it quickly becomes a real relationship.
This story is a fairly easy read and I sped through it in an evening. I think it suffers somewhat though from being a bit too much like another Mills & Boon book that I read recently and I ended up not being able to distinguish between the two. I liked Zara as a heroine, I thought she was more real than some female characters in these books, but I didn't really feel like I ever got a proper sense of Chase as a character. Still, this was a nice book to take my mind of things for a while.

Review: Unfortunately, this wasn't for me. Both characters, but especially Zara, had far too many Daddy issues. I can understand feeling self-conscious next to a bolder, prettier (idiotic) sister but going so far to take her place at a wedding in an attempt to earn the respect of her asshole father? He ain't worthy of you, girl!

Did Not Finish
November 22, 2014I can't bring myself to finish this book. I've pushed myself to 35% but it's just so repetitive, text heavy, and slow. I haven't created any kind of relationship with the characters, I don't care about what's happening, and the story isn't engaging me. I hate not finishing books, but I'm not buying into this one.

I'm not a fan of this author. She should be writing for the Modern Tempted line which is described as "Fresh, flirty and stylish – sexy stories for the modern girl who loves to live life to the full!"

The hero is blackmailed to marry the heroine's sister, a vapid socialite, because her father is a powerful associate of his business and hero has to be trusted by all his associates. But it will be her sister to marry him. Our heroine is very different from her sister, less glamorous but more smart and authentic. She had to face all her life her father and her sister's repeated body-shaming, so she thinks she is fat and ugly. Our hero instead finds her incredibly sexy and soon they become lovers. He is in love with her, but his plans for revenge risks to ruin their relation. In the end he will grovel and she will forgive her. I found this hero disgusting. he treats her abominably, humiliates her and eventually uses her for his purpose of revenge. He could have asked her to help him, she would have accepted because she hated her father. I don't think this man is redeemable.

Both characters had serious emotional scars that kept them from being able to have a normal loving marriage without a lot of hoops to jump through. Still it was a decent read although too manh too explicit scenes.
Exactly how the great reveal that her dad forced both of them into marriage was evidence that dad is guilty of moral turpitude and malfeasance is unclear, nor is it clear why this was such a huge betrayal. True, it is horribly embarrassing to admit in public that one is forced to marry, but it would have been equally embarrassing for him to have her admit she had to be almost dragged to the altar. Unpleasant and unkind of him to ask her to admit it in front of people but hardly the reason to throw everything away, especially since she should have been overjoyed to see her dad get his just desserts.

Love this Author. Her works are so emotional and enjoying. The sign of a good book is when you feel the hurt that the characters are feeling and this book makes you feel.

I enjoyed the book from start to finish. Sara is a great character. Her father and sister are terrible people. Loved the ending!

Zara Elliott married Chase Whitaker when her sister (the meant bride) was a no show. Her father needs the marriage to control the business, Cole needs the marriage to get revenge on her father.

February 12, 2017Ide ceritanya menarik, tapi ya ampuuuun deskripsi-narasinya banyak banget sampai harus aku skip karena ingin segera mengetahui dialog berikutnya atau harus balik lagi ke halaman sebelumnya untuk mengingat lagi apa yang dikatakan si tokoh. Benar2 menjemukan!
