An entry into the genre of books-about-famous-men-from-the-point-of-view-of-women-in-their-lives.
I love Klimt, and the whole arts-and-crafts movement that he was involved with. Oh, can I just say Art Nouveau? "Arts-and-Crafts" sounds like they were sitting around knitting and making macaroni mosaics or something. By coincidence, it was right after reading this that I went to see an exhibit of jewelry from the period at the Forbes Galleries. http://www.forbesgalleries.com/jewelr... SWOON! Now THAT'S what I'm talking about.
And, yay Wiener Werkstätte!
Anyway, after reading this book, I feel like I am much more enthused about the movement than Ms. Hickey is. I'm not really sure why she chose to write this book.
I thought it was quite well-written, however I disagreed with her characterizations of her historical characters - especially her main character, Emilie Flöge.
In reality, Emilie Flöge was an extremely talented, very intelligent, well-respected and well-to-do woman who was more than capable of making her own life choices. Obviously, we don't know everything about her internal, emotional life, and this is a work of fiction. But Hickey insists on portraying this strong, successful woman as a naive, constantly self-doubting person who is taken advantage of by Gustav Klimt, who abuses her love for him and ruins any chance she had to have a happy life.
OK, this is vaguely possible. But, considering the historical facts, not likely. The evidence actually indicates that it is unlikely that Klimt and Flöge were lovers; they were more likely close/best friends. But Hickey seems to think that it is impossible for a man and a woman to simply be friends, and further, she doesn't seem to comprehend that a woman might actually value her independence and have no particular desire to marry, especially in a society where marriage would mean giving up a great deal. Hickey's book seems to give out the message: "Watch out, because if you waste time hanging out with a man who won't commit to you, you will end up sad and lonely and abandoned."
Now, it's true enough that Flöge's fortunes did decline in her later years - but I think that, in reality, we can lay that at the feet of Hitler, considering that Flöge was a Jewish woman in Austria during WWII.
Hickey also portrays Adele Bloch-Bauer in a very negative light, concentrating on her 'illness' and drawing her as a depressed, physically self-destructive person. Again, in reality, while Bloch-Bauer may have been ill (she had tuberculosis), she was also a strong, opinionated and intelligent woman, who effectively created the life she wanted for herself.
In addition, while it is undoubtedly true that Klimt had sex with a great many of his paid models as a matter of course (which was fairly usual, at the time - many artists' models were also prostitutes), Hickey also alleges that Klimt refused to support his acknowledged children financially. It appears that this is untrue, and in reality he did support the children he acknowledged. After his death, many other people did claim to be children of Klimt, but it is unknown whether their claims were true.
So - while this was a pleasant-enough read, I wouldn't really recommend it for those interested in learning more about these historical figures and their artistic work.

I absolutely adored this book. My modem/computer was down this afternoon and so rather than looking at GR, it was just me and the book, and Oscar of course. I love the book b/c although much is conjecture about the relationship between Gustav Klimt and Emilie Flöge, I totally believe the author's interpretation. There is a clear author's note. Emilie Flöge was the model for Klimt's painting The Kiss, and it was her name that he spoke when he died. Their relationship feels authentic. I enjoy the sexual energy and the capacity for violence so inherent to these two people. The book is full of emotional turmoil. Not only do you come to understand their personalities but you also understand the historical events they lived through. You learn about how Klimt went about painting, about Emilie's famous fashion salon, about Vienna and its beautiful streets and buildings such as the Secession, about Egon Schiele and Joseph Hoffmann and Berta Zuckerkandl and Carl Moll.... After reading this you really must read Arrogance, about Schiele. I loved that book too!
Through page 130: This is a love story. I like how love is depicted, boht emotionally and sexually. It is a sensual novel. I like the book very, very much. The author has drawn real live people. You get this on top of learning about Klimt as an artist.
Through page 65: This book is about Gustav Klimt and Emilie Flöge, the model who posed for Klimt's famous painting "The Kiss". She is telling her story as an older woman, looking back on her life. At 12 she was a sassy girl who knew what she liked and didn't like. Her upbringing was very constricted and ruled by propriety. She lived in Vienna. Vienna comes alive with all its past glory.
"The medieval cobbled streets and marzipan-colored buildings were magical, and the dimly-lit shops selling sheet music or crystal goblets were enchanted, but I didn't know it yet It was just the palce I lived I believed that all other cities, all other towns must be similar." (page 19)
The writing is very descriptive, not only of Vienna but also of people and the rules of society. She and her two other sisters must wear stiff lace collars that make it impossible to move their heads. Emilie manages to steal a dinner napkin so the lace wouldn't scratch her.... Anyhow she and her 3 year older sister, Helene, have decided that they wil sneak to Klimt's studio to be painted, after first swiping money for the street-cars from their oldest sister, Pauline. First the area in which the studio is located is described using smells, sights and sounds:
"It was a street where goods were unloaded from ships and put into wagons, where nets of fish were hauled into warehouses to be gutted and salted. You could have a horse's shoe repaired, or your own, a sail mended, or a cow butchered and divided into pieces. The air was oppressive with the smell of things that had been rotting in bins and had finally been exposed to the air."
"In the tenement next to Gustav's building an immigrant from Silesia and his wife had a bakery, and as we climbed the stairs the aroma of dough and hot oil mingled with the sharp, sweet smell of turpentine and the bitter one of iron. The stairs slanted toward the street and a few of them gave way when you stepped on them."
"The studio was cold, since the artists were consistently short of coal for the furnace, and bare, since all the chaors were piled in the center of the room to be used in a tableau. The floor was made of cement and had cracked in places. It was filthy with charcoal dust. Some of the pains in the tall windows were broken and cardboard had been taped over them. The glass looked thin and weak, too thin to keep the cold out."
"Gustav was different here. For one thing, he was wearing a robe instead of a suit...."
"'Do you ever clean up?' asked Helene wonderingly."
"'Why should we?' said Gustav. 'This place is empty. When it gets to dirty to work in we'll move upstairs.'"
"The idea couldn't have been more radical to us. So much of our lives were consumed with keeping things neat. I felt like throwing my coat onto the floor." (from pages 65-67)
Not only can the reader picture the place but also one comes to understand what moves the different characters. I cannot show this to you withour quoting and suoting and quoting, so trust me instead. I prefer this writing styyle to that I just encountered in Claude & Camille: A Novel of Monet. And I enjoy the Emilie's spunk.

Sărutul pictat este o carte despre artă, despre frumos, despre creația lui Gustav Klimt și despre elementele care i-au influențat stilul. Prin spiritul de observație a lui Emilie și a stilului epistolar, cititorul află despre cum s-au creat celebrele picturi semnate de Klimt, care au fost oamenii ce i-au marcat viața, cum relația lui cu Emilie a devenit un element vital în existența pictorului.

Îmi plac de mor cărțile care mă surprind atunci când mă aștept mai puțin. E și cazul romanului de față pe care l-am devorat în 4 zile (probabil îmi lua mai puțin dacă nu aș fi citit și altceva în paralel).
"Sărutul pictat" este o ficțiune istorică care spune povestea relației marelui pictor Gustav Klimt și a lui Emile Flodge (creatoare de moda din secolul XX) pornind de la una dintre cele mai celebre picturi ale lui Klimt - "Sărutul". Pentru mine a fost o carte perfecta pentru relaxare (și pentru weekend implicit).
Recunosc, marele minus al cărții (din perspectiva mea) a fost lipsa unor note de subsol care sa introducă personalitățile apărute, dar și să explice puțin mai bine contextul istoric. Dar daca voi nu țineți la asta, s-ar putea sa va placa puțin mai mult.

Emilie Floge (1874-1952) was an Austrian fashion designer, whose designs were ahead of her time. They were meant to be comfortable and they were seen as avant-garde. She was also associated with the painter Gustav Klimt as his life companion.
1886 Vienna, Emilie Floge is twelve years old, when she meets Gustav Klimt. She becomes fascinated with the world of artists and dreams of Klimt painting her. To her surprise her father requests Klimt to draw three sisters.
After three drawings are done, Klimt stays for dinner. Emilie is so unhappy with a drawing of her. “I was the only one who looked like I could turn people to stone.” And the whole family seems to be agreeing that he captured her personality the best.
She takes her revenge at dinner, when she notices his clumsiness with a knife and fork. “It was bad manners to draw attention to other people’s bad manners, but I made sure that he could tell what I thought from the way I was looking at him.”
Since one of her sisters is taking singing lessons and the other is about to begin a special language course, it was decided that Emilie would take drawing lessons with Klimt.
She is disappointed to be taking her first drawing lessons at Mrs. Klimt’s house instead of Gustav’s studio. But then posing for Klimt takes her to his studio where she feels most alive.
“He painted a world without hypocrisy, where people were free to love whomever they chose regardless of age or social class or propriety…”
With the support of her father and Klimt, she opens a fashion salon.
While she designs the first dresses for herself, Klimt realizes that he has never painted her. So he begins to make the sketches for the portrait. The portrait, which ends up being stunning.
The studio becomes an immediate success.
When WWI breaks out, it changes everything. Some from the artistic circle die before the war ends.
With this richly imagined story of two avant-garde artists, the author brings a vivid portrait of them: how they’re met, how their lives progressed. I just wished the story brought more of her fashion designs. They were so distinctive that it begs to be integrated more into the story.

As well as Adele Bloch-Bauer – her portrait also called The Lady in Gold or The Woman in Gold is on a permanent display at Neue Galerie in NYC. It is a small gallery, but there is a free entrance on the first Friday of each month from 6pm to 9pm. Also, it was a subject of a 2015 biographical drama film titled Woman in Gold.

This is historical fiction at its best. The author does a superb job of recreating a time and place and creating a story around two historical figures that ring true with every word. The relationship between Gustav and Emilie is captivating, but where the author shines is in describing the creative processes of the artists in this mesmerizing story.

If you are looking for a novel that begins to place the eccentric mind and provocative artwork of Gutav Klimt into some sort of relatable perspective, then keep on looking.
The Painted Kiss avoids all but the most superficial descriptions of Klimt’s work and takes an outline of his life to produce a romance-themed novel. The elements of Klimt’s paintings and how they might have reflected his unique thought-process as an artist are avoided, and the boldest elements of Klimt’s life are softened and smoothed over. For instance, the fact that Klimt is known to have fathered numerous illegitimate children is avoided and in its place is a suggestion that Klimt was a type of new-age free spirit that could not be bound by the restrictions associated with love as defined by society.
The overall experience is not unpleasant. Elizabeth Hickey writes an engaging novel. The name-dropped characters and references to Klimt’s paintings provide information to explore and admire outside of its pages. The experience is cheapened, however, by the dilution of such a strong life and Klimt’s powerful works in favor of such a commonplace theme.

I really loved this story. Besides being a writer, I am an artist and dearly love books about artists. Although the author herself admits in her notes that much of the interactions and events or feelings were made up I am fine with that. I like "what if" and imagining relationships and how people really felt about each other, especially when history gives so little about some of the people in a famous person's life.
Emilie was a real person but we don't know much factual information on her. The author did a fantastic job of creating a believable woman who deeply loved Klimpt. At times I wanted to shake her and beg her to move on with her life, find someone who would love her, but yet I understood why she couldn't. And, to her credit, she did build a successful career for herself and become quite a force in her own right.
I also liked the the author didn't try to paint Klimt in a simpathetic light. He may or may not have been a kind man, but he did have several mistresses and children. At times his lack of empathy toward Emilie was borerline cruel and usually, at best, thoughtless. Still, I could feel the struggle in him that he did love her, but yet he knew the type of man he was. He would never be faithful, so why pretend he could be? In a bizarre way, it was honorable of him NOT to become lovers with Emilie or marry her since he knew he would only hurt her worse if he did.
He had major warts and I like when warts aren't sugarcoated. MUch about him I disliked. He was a coward in some ways. Also, his extreme lack of caring and selfishness when it came to his children was awful. He had the money to give their mothers to make sure they ate well, but chose to only buy them cheap toys every once in awhile.
The women in his life were also interesting and well-written. I would have liked to slap Alma across the face!
Emilie's sisters were also great characters.
I cried a little toward the end, and would read this book sometime again. This is a great read for anyone who enjoys books about artists and their private lives (more than about the actual details of their work. This does not go into that too much, and since I already paint I don't want to read endless detail about how a painting is done)and I would recommend it!

Emilie's sisters were also great characters.
I cried a little toward the end, and would read this book sometime again. This is a great read for anyone who enjoys books about artists and their private lives (more than about the actual details of their work. This does not go into that too much, and since I already paint I don't want to read endless detail about how a painting is done)and I would recommend it!

Primul meu contact cu Klimt a fost anul trecut, când boboacă fiind, profa de romana ne-a pus să facem un proiect care includea tabloul Sărutul lui Gustav Klimt. Făcând cercetari pentru proiect, am aflat o mica parte din inside-urile poveștii din spatele tabloului, dar anumite întrebări încă nu-mi primiseră răspuns. Cine era, așadar, Emilie Flöge?
De fiecare dată când ajungeam în librarie si treceam pe lângă standul Editurii Nemira, ochii îmi fugeau fară să vreau la minunăția asta de copertă, dar de fiecare dată se întampla să plec cu câte altceva. Sunt o mare fană a lui Klimt. M-am îndrăgostit de opera lui la prima vedere, în Muzeul Belvedere, când aveam 17 ani. Prima pictură văzută a fost Sărutul. Sunt o iubitoare a contrastelor. Pentru mine, paradoxurile, antitezele și oximoroanele reușite reprezintă apoteoza artei. Și m-a izbit tabloul în toată măreția lui de 180x180 cm. De atunci, m-am tot interesat, atât din cărți, cât și din articole on-line, despre viața și opera lui.
Pe prima copertă scrie că ,,Gustav Klimt avea o muză secretă. Aceasta este povestea ei." Din cauza asta, n-am vrut să citesc cartea. Știam că nu se va încadra în concepția mea despre cum ar fi reprezentată viața lui Klimt într-o ficțiune istorică. Știam că e speculat că Emilie Flöge ar fi fost modelul pentru tabloul Sărutul și că e încă în ceață natura relației dintre ea și Klimt.
Mă așteptam să fie un roman de dragoste foarte pasional și tragic. Din cauza asta, n-am vrut să-l cumpăr. Văzând cartea în librărie, totuși, nu m-am putut abține. Deloc! Așa că am plecat acasă cu o carte și cu un gând - să fac o comparație între ficțiune și adevărul istoric.
Și din nou mi-a fost dat peste cap planul legat de carte, după primele câteva pagini: autoarea a decis să schimbe vârsta la care Emilie îl întâlnește pe Klimt. Și mi s-a părut genial! Așa că am lăsat deoparte ideea de comparație și m-am bucurat de poveste. O bucată. Vrând-nevrând, am început să fac în minte asocieri, să caut în albume de artă picturile descrise și să verific timeline-ul descris.
Mi-a plăcut legătura dintre cei doi imaginată de autoare, dar cred că a dus-o puțin prea departe. Anumite acțiuni ale lui Klimt, nu doar în relația cu Emilie, mi se par absolut exagerate. Faptul că avem narare la persoana I, dar cumva naratoarea tot știe ce simte Gustav în anumite situații, mi se pare iar prea mult.
Totuși, am apreciat cum au fost introduși ca personaje artiștii și oameni din cercul apropiat al artistului, dar și cum a fost creionat destinul lui Emilie.
Nota autoarei de la sfârșit cântărește foarte mult, deoarece facilitează înțelegerea anumitor inconsistențe în scrierea cărții.
Cred că mi-ar fi plăcut cartea mult mai mult dacă nu mă ambiționam să o tot compar cu ce citisem înainte și să îi tot întorc acțiunea pe toate părțile. L-am căutat în ea pe Klimt mai mult decât ar fi fost cazul, iar pe Emilie mult mai puțin decât ar fi fost corect. Era, totuși, povestea ei.

Cred ca e din noua una din cartile alea overrated. I mean, daca nu stii nimc despre Klimt nici n-o sa afli mare lucru din cartea asta; daca stii cate ceva, atunci te simti cumva furat. Cartea nu respecta nici realitatea intru totul, nici nu merge pe firul fanteziei pana la capat. Patrunzi in mintea lui Emile Floge, asa cum si-a imaginat autoarea, dar nu sunt foarte convinsa ca e modul cel mai reusit. Povestile atarna si ele firav, abia abia tinandu-se laolalta.
Personal, nici nu mi-a placut, nici nu mi-a displacut, doar ca aveam asteptari mult mai mari, iar cartea nu numai ca nu a raspuns niciuneia dintre ele, ba chiar m-a facut sa scormonesc netul in cauyare de carti mai bine despre cei doi ( si cred ca am gasit : https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/4...)

I enjoyed this historical novel about the artist Gustav Klimt and his companion/lover/muse, Emilie Floge, a fashion designer. Narrated by Emilie, the story is told from her youth when she first meets Klimt and follows her life. It is interspersed with sections set in 1945 when Emilie and her niece are staying in the country away from Vienna. Always with books about artists, I like looking up the various paintings discussed. I’m not sure the author gets inside the art of Klimt, but it was interesting reading about these bohemian types and their unconventional lives.

Recently watched a program on Ovation highlighting the controversy surrounding the rightful possession of Gustav Klimt’s portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer and some of his other works. Wanting to keep the art theme current, I decided to read this book, which chronicles the life of Emilie Flöge, the sister-in-law and long time companion of Gustav Klimt. Historically, no one really knows how deep their relationship went, but during his final illness, he wanted her by his side. It’s also speculated that she was the model for the woman in The Kiss. Basically, this novel offers an interpretation of these facts—of Emilie’s life with Klimt.
The best part of the book is the beginning, chronicling Emilie’s childhood. The author paints a rather good impression of a precocious twelve year-old. I rather enjoyed Emilie’s observations of Klimt’s character, silently taking pleasure at his disheveled appearance and his slovenly habits at the dinner table… talking while eating, choking on his wine, watching as bits of food drop off his fork and onto his lap—her way of exacting revenge against the unflattering portrait he’s made of her. :-)
However, I didn’t at all like how Emilie’s portrayed as an adult… this woman pining for Klimt’s affections, helplessly in love with him. I found it creepy especially considering how roughly he treats her. It’s one of those situations of “He loves her as he can love.” It seems that Klimt’s affection for her is mostly silent. Emilie tries to look into his art—his portraits of her—as a means to gauge the extent of his feelings towards her, but finds it difficult. She sees him building her up into something she’s not. While it’s an interesting interpretation, I was hoping for more than I got. Personally, I feel that Klimt’s own photos of Emilie show more depth of feeling than the sentiments expressed in the novel.
The best part of the book is the beginning, chronicling Emilie’s childhood. The author paints a rather good impression of a precocious twelve year-old. I rather enjoyed Emilie’s observations of Klimt’s character, silently taking pleasure at his disheveled appearance and his slovenly habits at the dinner table… talking while eating, choking on his wine, watching as bits of food drop off his fork and onto his lap—her way of exacting revenge against the unflattering portrait he’s made of her. :-)
However, I didn’t at all like how Emilie’s portrayed as an adult… this woman pining for Klimt’s affections, helplessly in love with him. I found it creepy especially considering how roughly he treats her. It’s one of those situations of “He loves her as he can love.” It seems that Klimt’s affection for her is mostly silent. Emilie tries to look into his art—his portraits of her—as a means to gauge the extent of his feelings towards her, but finds it difficult. She sees him building her up into something she’s not. Yet she loves him anyway. I don’t know….

Cartea te duce mai aproape de viață și opera lui Klimt.
Iar faptul ca acțiunea se desfășoară în orașul meu favorit (Viena) face cartea sa fie și mai dragă sufletului meu.

I liked the writing style or at least the translated version of it. I liked Emilie even though she had very questionable moments. I ended up hating or more like being disgusted by Gustav (at least the way he is portrayed in the book). Overall the book was fine but don't think I would be picking it up again or recommending it 🤷🏻♀️

Много ми хареса. Аз по принцип харесвам книги за живота на артисти, а тази ми се струва, че доста се доближава до действителността. Не бях запозната с живота и творчеството на Густав Климт и останах очарована. По това, което четох за него и музите му в интернет, се оказва, че писателката доста добре е проучила живота му. Изразила го е с много приятно, през очите на вярната му сродна душа Емилие.
Много топлина и красота има в романа. Не намирам нещо, което да не ми хареса, но 5 звезди давам само на книги, които са ме довели или до луд смях или до плач. Така че, заслужени 4 звезди :)

Nu știu dacă să mă bucur sau nu fiindcă am citit această carte, pentru că mi-a schimbat mult percepția despre Klimt și operele sale, pe care de altfel eu le admir foarte mult. Este o carte de ficțiune istorică bine inspirată din realitate, lucru pe care l-am descoperit făcând cercetări pe internet și căutând poze. Bineînțeles este și o operă imaginativă, însă mi-a influențat mult modul în care în percep acum pe Klimt, și nu în bine. Doream foarte mult să aflu povestea Sărutului și altor opere ale sale. Însă lectura în sine a fost nu greoaie, însă sacadată și cu un aer destul de sumbru uneori, apăsător, contrat culorilor vii ale tablourilor. Viața personajelor este destul de apăsătoare, relația dintre ele ambiguă, nici caldă, nici rece, Klimt este un amorezat care se culcă cu toate modelele și care nu își asumă nimic, ea este o victimă a unui cerc vicios al iubirii pentru el, devenită o creatoare de modă ciudățică, parcă mereu în căutarea a ceva ce nici personajul, nici autorul nu pot descrie... Nu știu, dar pe mine nu m-a prins stilul acesta de expunere deloc. Prefer să mă găndesc la Klimt și la operele sale în termenii mei. Deși pozele pe care le-am găsit pe internet s-au potrivit perfect în povestea din carte, lucru care îmi dă de gândit.

This is the story of Emilie Flogel, the inspiration for the famous painting called "The Kiss" by Gustav Klimt. There has always been a lot of speculation of their relationship The story is told from the point of view of Flogel with some interludes about some of Klimt's more famous painting. As a typical artist, Klimt was also known for his bohemian lifestyle.
I was drawn into this story right away. The setting of turn of the century Vienna and life at the Flogel household was interesting. The three sisters had a very strict father and a less conventional mother. Flogel's father decided to give Emilie drawing lessons and hired an up and coming artist, Gustav Klimt. I didn't know much about Klimt so the descriptions of his artistic process and the politics of the art world were new. I thought that the story about how their relationship evolved seem plausible; however, about 2/3 of the way through the book, I got a bit tired. While Emilie seems like a very strong woman, she lacked self esteem is certain areas of her life and I think that is one reason why I lost interest. I don't want to dissuade anyone from reading this because I also might have lost interest because I've been a bit under the weather.

Nu sunt un fan al fictiunilor istorice.
In general, mi se pare ca ajungem sa retinem lucruri sau date mai usor daca le punem intr-o poveste si atunci, cu tipul acesta de carti, ajung sa retin informatii false pe care altcineva doar si le-a imaginat despre o persoana cu un trecut real.
Partea buna e ca m-a indemnat sa caut mai multe informatii despre personajele implicate.

Sărutul pictat de Elizabeth Hickey este o ficţiune istorică în care sunt prezentate vieţile pictorului Gustav Klimt şi ale creatoarei de modă Emilie Flöge. Vieţile acestora se intersectează în anul 1886, moment în care tânăra Emilie face cunoştinţă cu noul ei profesor de desen. Gustav era un nonconformist, îşi ducea meseria la un alt nivel şi nu obişnuia să predea, însă acesta a fost un caz aparte. Poate că maturitatea acestuia în ceea ce făcea, prezenţa tulburătoare sau faptul că venea din altă lume a atras-o atât de tare pe Emilie la Gustav. Cert este că uşor-uşor a căzut în capcana sentimentelor, iar acest lucru i-a marcat definitiv viitorul.
Deoarece povestea este alterată pentru plăcerea cititorului, nu îmi dau seama care aspecte sunt adevărate şi care nu din ceea ce m-a deranjat pe mine la întreaga poveste. Cartea este prezentată ca având în conţinut tulburătoarea poveste de iubire dintre cei doi, însă eu nu am simţit nimic tulburător în ea din ceea ce ar vrea să se transmită.
