I awaken in a laboratory.

I don’t know who I am.

I’m inexplicably drawn to the doctor who cares for me. She tells me I’ve been altered, that I’m stronger and faster, that I’ll be a key component in a war between corporations. She says I volunteered for this. She says I volunteered to be transformed, but I have no way of knowing if what she says is true.

Something isn’t right. My memories have been taken, wiped clean, but dreams begin to slip into my conscious mind. I can’t let anyone know when that happens, or they’ll remove my memories again. Somewhere inside of me, I know I need to remember something important.

I’m fighting a war I don’t understand, and the one woman I rely on can’t be trusted.

This was such an entertaining read! Wow! Once again this author blew me away with her originality. To be honest, I expected to enjoy this one because I love Mrs. Savage's writing style and also because I love Sci-fi...everything. However, I've never expected to enjoy it as much as I did and to be so engrossed in this futuristic world this author portrayed. And whoa…she did a wonderful job because let me tell you something, the entire time I felt like a time traveler. “Specimen” was a very addictive read for me. I couldn’t put it down. With every chapter I was more and more engrossed in the story. I had to know how everything will end up for our hero.

“I’m in a lab. I volunteered to be a soldier in a war I don’t remember. They’ve changed me – they’re still changing me. What am I becoming?"

Sten is the specimen 79. He wakes up in a lab with no memories. He doesn’t know his name, what kind of man he is/was, where he comes from or how old is he. His doctor, a woman named Riley Grace informs him about who he is. He is a volunteer for a special program because apparently he’s a loyalist, a patriot. He’s stronger and smarter than other people and there are more like him, 88 men who agreed to allow themselves to be transformed in better soldiers to win a war that started thirty years ago.

At first Sten is confused, not only because he doesn’t understand everything they tell him, but also because he doesn’t understand his attraction to Riley. He is more than attracted to her. He is drawn to her like a moth to a flame. He craves her touch and her smell affects him in a strange way.

“I want to devour her. I want to punish her for putting me through such agony. I want to scream and cry and fuck.”

description

Sten begins to question everything Riley told him about who he is and what happens in their world when he starts dreaming about...some people and places.

Like I mentioned above this one it really kept me at the edge of my seat. Like Sten, I questioned everything and everyone from the beginning. The story kept me guessing from the start and it's written in such a way it made me want to know more. The story is action-packed and a really great blend of suspense, intrigue, danger and steam. I liked how Mrs. Savage built her dystopian/sci-fi world. In some way everything felt believable.

The entire story is told from Sten’s perspective and once again Mrs. Savage did a fantastic job with this single male POV. Sten is a likeable character from the beginning. I sympathize with him and I totally understood his confusion. Both Sten and Riley are well portrayed characters, esp. since this was a plot driven story. Sten is loyal, sweet, caring and very protective. He was pretty perfect. Riley was an intriguing character mostly because I wasn’t sure of her intensions.

The steam aspect was more than I expected. I’d never expected to be so steamy, but hey…I can’t complain since this author can write really well a hot sex scene. My Gawd…at times they were off the charts. To say that I loved this aspect of the story would be an understatement.

The story ends in a very unique and smart way. I can’t say I liked it very much, so I wouldn’t mind a sequel, a novella, an extended epilogue….anything really.

All in all, “Specimen” was a fantastic read that surprised me in a very good way. If you want something different or simply an unconventional romance, with a plot well developed and a little bit of everything, then try this one!

As long as she's near me, I question nothing. She's my doctor, my guide, and the subject of nearly every thought in my head. Everything I do--everything I am--centers on her.

Where do I begin with this book? I’ve been trying to figure out a way to write a review that will do it justice, but without spoiling anything for those of you who haven’t picked it up yet. I’ve read a few of Shay’s books and I’m definitely a fan of her writing style. She tends to write in the male’s POV and does a damn good job of it. Her stories are usually action packed and could be made into blockbuster movies on the big screen, although they may actually be labeled XXX, or NC17 if she were to cut down on the sexy time. You just know when you pick up a Shay Savage book that you better have a supply of clean panties because the ones you wear will be getting soaked!!!

The story begins with the Hero waking up in a deserted lab. He doesn’t know how he got there and what’s worse is he doesn’t remember his own name. He has no memories at all. You can feel his anxiety and completely empathize with him when he freaks out and wrecks the lab. Gas is leaked into the lab which renders him unconscious. The next time he wakes up he notices an attractive woman in a lab coat working on a laptop. The moment he lays eyes on her, he is automatically turned on. He has been assigned to Dr. Riley Grace for a highly classified medical experiment. He asks how he ended up there and he is told that he volunteered to have his memory completely wiped out in order to be transformed into a cyber-enhanced soldier. He will have superhuman strength and intellect to get him out of dangerous situations whenever he is sent out on a top secret mission. He will also be able to function without food and water as currently they are a rare commodity. Dr. Riley names him STEN, which is short for specimen seventy-two of eighty-nine. There was a total of eighty-nine men who were transformed into these special cyber soldiers.

So Sten has some microchips implanted in his brain and he receives daily injections of testosterone and other drugs that help to make him the perfect soldier but also a lovely side-effect is that he is completely under Riley’s control. He will do anything she says and only wants to please her. Sten also wants nothing more than to have sex with Riley, 24/7. This guy is perfect and I was thinking how awesome it would be if we all could have our own Sten.

 photo specimen teaser 2_zpshm4nne9g.jpg

Sten starts having dreams and they turn out to be flashbacks of his previous life. He was told he volunteered to be a specimen but his dreams have him questioning if possibly he’s been lied to. As time moves on Riley and Sten give into their passion for each other and WOW, just holy wow, these two can go at it for hours on end. I wondered how Riley could walk straight the next day.

There’s a crazy amount of action and I was dying to find out how these two were going to be able to get through it all and ultimately have their HEA. I have left a lot of the details out because I really don’t want to spoil this one for you all but I have to say I am freaking PISSED with the ending!! It’s like the author said, “HA the joke’s on you!!”

This is definitely an entertaining read and one that will have your mind blown by the time you get to the last page.

Gah. That ending! In a way, I can see the brilliance in it, but damn, thanks for leaving me teetering on the edge.

description

Specimen was an entertaining sci-fi read, with nice mix of romance, steam and suspense. Told exclusively from the hero's POV, the author does a great job of putting the reader in specimen 79/Sten's head. Waking up in a lab with no memories, everything Sten learns comes from his doctor, Riley Grace. He is told he is a volunteer, that there is a war going on and that he is been altered to be a super soldier. Stronger, faster, and smarter. I was right there with Sten, I wasn't sure what was happening, or what to believe. Then he starts to dream, something that isn't suppose to happen. He is afraid the dreams will be wiped away, so he decides to keep them a secret. He doesn't want to forget. He is confused, and unsure, but he has an undeniable connection to Riley, everything about her calls to him, from her touch, to her scent.

"It's part of your design. You are extremely powerful, and we needed to a way to make sure you could be tempered."

"You mean controlled."

Can Riley be trusted? What do Sten's dreams mean? The suspense surrounding this story was well done. Now, to be honest, this one didn't really start to pull me in until around 45%, but once things started progressing, this one definitely held my interest. Motives are revealed, lines are crossed, the truth is discovered and there seems to be danger at every corner. Will Sten survive? Just how strong is Sten's connection to Riley? Is it science or something more? I enjoyed this one, even though the ending left me with a few questions.

The story begins with the hero waking up in a sterile lab without any knowledge of who he is or how he got there.

As the hero struggles to piece together his identity, he finds himself drawn to the doctor who cares for him. She reveals that he has been transformed into a superhuman warrior. Her claims that he volunteered for this transformation seem suspicious, leaving the hero (and me) questioning the truth of her words.

Sci-fi thriller
Dystopian
Human experimentation
Corporate warfare
Psychological
Loads of on-page sex
Brutal torture
Disappointing ending

Pieces of memories begin to surface in his dreams. The glimpses of his past makes him begin to believe there is a deeper conspiracy, one that he must uncover without alerting his captors. Who can he trust? Is his doctor lying to him? Are his dreams reality?

I want to believe her. Therein lies the problem. I can’t trust her because I can’t trust my own thoughts and opinions about her. I want her desperately. I want to believe that she’s known nothing of my past, but how can that be true?

As many other readers have pointed out, there is on-page sex with a couple of other women, but it didn’t bother me because it was before the H and h are a couple.

This story was disturbing, frustrating, horrifying and entertaining to read.

Both organizations are really out for one thing, and that’s profit. The fact that they’re going about it in different ways isn’t something I care about.

Shay writes the most compelling male characters and gives them such an authentic voice!

A perfect buddy read with Dan. I’m still irritated about that ending though!

5 - "What do you remember?" Stars!

Shay Savage has mad skills when it comes to planting the seeds of romance in a totally inhospitable environments, and then nurturing them into absolutely outstanding love stories. Specimen is all that and more, and like so many of her previous books, is a story that you probably aren’t going to read the likes of again.

I think the synopsis gives you enough of a clue as to the basis of the relationship between Sten and Riley, and how it was initially formed, but the speed of the development of that relationship, coupled with Sten’s recollection past memories really gave their time together a kind of double-edge. Sten in knowing that not everything (in fact pretty much all of it) was as it seemed, and the internal conflict that was bought about because of it.

The desire to please her is a strong one.

The unknown factor in that he is unsure as to whether Riley has knowledge of the full picture, and as the plot progresses who he can actually trust.

"I thought you were hurt… I thought I might fail."

This is one of those books you start with high expectations, its Shay Savage right! The woman doesn’t do average, but once again they were exceeded for me. As I said it seems the more extreme the circumstances between the couple in question, the more she seems to pull it out of the bag for them.

The scenario that they find themselves in, the course the plot takes as they both begin to realize that the truth may not be what they were lead to believe, and the resolution are all extremely well crafted, and explored. I have no doubt there will be a few expletives thrown around by readers in the way the author ended this story, but I kind of liked it because again, she didn’t close it out in the way you would generally expect.

"I may not have chosen this life you gave me… but other than my memories, I didn’t have a lot to lose."

Another absolutely stellar book by this author, I hope that we revisit these characters at some point in the future, but if we don’t I can live with the ending that we were given.

"You were never a lab rat to me."

"I don't know my name."
Specimen begins in a lab. The world exists in a place of utter turmoil and disorientation is the predominant theme. Caught in the middle is Specimen 72! A man who doesn't remember who he is, why he is being held in a lab, or what he is supposed to be doing. Only one thing exists for him, and that is his desire for his doctor Riley.
"I need to touch her."
description

Riley has been assigned to Specimen 72. She is conditioned to care for him and run tests on his daily progress. As Riley and Sten (specimen seventy-two of a group of eighty-nine) spend more time together, the doctor/patient relationship transforms into something deeper. The heady combination of Sten's desire to be with Riley, the drugs that are pumping through his system, and Riley's attraction to him become the catalyst for bringing them together!
"Why am I so drawn to her?"
description

As desire increases between Riley and Sten, the government-run lab begins to make further demands on the specimens or "super soldiers". Sten is forced to acknowledge his job as a "government controlled soldier" and is sent out in the field. As the tests and tribulations increase in intensity, he begins to remember who he is. The struggle between what is right and wrong is questionable. The identity of those who are good and those who mean to do harm is blurred. As the world begins to crumble around them, can Riley and Sten survive?
"Is that why she's brought me here? Am I to be destroyed?"
description

Told in Sten's POV, Specimen was a non-stop action packed read. The pacing was consistent with that of a roller coaster. The characters are complex and well developed throughout. Each detail is crafted with precision to enhance the plot. I simply could not put it down! Specimen is a complex read that will leave you breathless.

description

Overall, Specimen is a must read for Sci-Fi/Dystopian/Romance Readers. If you are looking for a blend of action, steamy romance, and intrigue, then look no further. I have always been a fan of Savage's work, and this read only solidifies my feelings about this author. Her writing is smart, concise, steamy, and quite diverse. Specimen is simply amazing! Regarding the ending, I can only hope there is more to come!

3.75 ~4 stars

About thirty years ago, a passing near-Earth comet caused great devastation. Crops failed and rainfall nearly ceased threatening both the food and water supplies. Society was divided into factions, which would determine how much the technical resources could and should be devoted to improve land and water management. People decided that a new breed of soldier would be necessary – one with enhanced abilities that could better withstand the rigors of war and eventually bring it to an end.

These super soldiers had their memories been wiped out and replaced with the data needed to achieve the ultimate goal. Sten is one such super soldier, he’s the specimen and Riley is his doctor.

My senses are heightened, and the cyber implants in my head allow me to learn faster and perform better. I adapt quickly, get fatigued slowly, and I’m able to go without sleep or sustenance for long periods of time. I am the ideal soldier. ~ Sten

In addition, Sten comes into ‘heat’ and experiences rampant sexual urges as a result of the chemicals running through his body.

I’m well aware of the connection between sex and violence that is being instilled in me. I crave them both in equal amounts. I’m often hard during the simulated battles, and sex with the prostitutes is always fast and rough. ~ Sten

He desires Riley and feels a strong emotional bond with her. Riley sees his wild emotions and his desire to connect with her and surrenders to passion. When Stern starts having memories come back in dreams and flashbacks, his trust to others’ motives, and especially Riley’s, is weakened. Who is telling the truth? Who is lying? Did he truly volunteer to become a specimen or was he forced to do it?

Specimen is enthralling-an instant thrill ride of danger and romance. Sten and Riley have a chemistry that is intense, strong and deep. Sten stops at nothing to keep her safe and the attraction between them is red-hot! Readers get treated to several juicy scenes between them!!

But, there was quite a bit more action and sex and not enough romance between Sten and Riley. I think that too much sex ruined this good story. I really liked the concept of running out of resources because I think in the time we live in now it’s a pretty real concept. This book was a total page turner, but its ending was strange, leaving the reader with questions and mysteries. Whilst not quite what I was expecting, it was still an enjoyable read.

Not what I expected.

I was so excited to start reading this book because its blurb sounded very promising. The story started off strong and it made me curious and kept me turning pages like crazy. When I was halfway through the book, it even got better. Rapidly but clearly, the truth began to unravel. At this point, I couldn’t stop anticipating what would happen next, and I thought Specimen was going to be my 4 stars-read for certain. Not until I reached the 85% mark did I realize how wrong I was. Everything went downhill from there. I was so fed up, so much so that I wanted to DNF right away.

But as you know that I’m a glutton for punishment, of course, I continued reading. And…the ending. THAT ENDING! When I reached the epilogue, I almost threw my kindle across the room! (If it had been the paperback, I would undoubtedly have done that!) WTH! I hated this plot twist. So, I read the entire story from beginning to end, for what?

To hell with that! It wasn’t a surprise, it was a letdown! The whole epilogue totally didn’t work for me.

If there had been no ROMANCE in this book, I would have given it 3 stars. This was an engaging Sci-Fi/Dystopian story and it was pretty good for the most part. I think it would be unfair to rate it very low because of the disappointing last quarter.

**Spoiler alert!!!

My major problem was the romance.

It was obvious to me that almost 50% of the story focused on the romance between the hero and heroine, so I found it very difficult to just ignore this part and pretend it didn’t exist in the book. I can tell that the whole romance was a failure. In fact, it failed from the very start when the hero, Sten or Galen, woke up with no memory of who he was. As soon as he saw Dr. Riley Grace standing beside his bed, he immediately felt sexually attracted to her. It was a feeling that he couldn't explain to himself why he was so drawn to her and why he had a strong desire for sexual intimacy with her. Of course, it was weird but at that moment, I thought it had to be insta-love/lust for certain. But damn was I wrong (again)! No, it wasn't love at first sight. His feelings were the effect of what the implants in his brain had done to him and what irritated me the most was that they (Riley and the techs) programmed him to respond to her touch, her voice, her scent, and her orders! To be clear, he was programmed to like her and want only her! Yuck, that wasn't romantic at all! Was it love? No. Nope.

Now let’s see what really happened. At first, Galen was certain he loved her.

“Maybe it was never the drugs,” I say, and Riley looks at me quizzically. I hold her to my chest and kiss the top of her head. “The word isn’t adequate, but I love you, too. It’s not the drugs or anything else. It’s just you. I love you.”

But when Riley and the tech tried to get rid of the implants, he refused their help because he was afraid that he would lose all the feelings he had for her.

“What if Errol can break the connections, and I don’t need all those drugs anymore? What if all that works out perfectly, but in the end…”
I stop, and my gut clenches. The thought feels as if it’s burning through my skull.
“Just say it, Galen.” She strokes my face gently with her fingertips.
“I don’t want the feelings I have for you to go away.” I keep my gaze on her, pleading.

There! See? So that meant the feelings he had totally based on a chemical reaction. It wasn’t true love, was it? He himself wasn’t sure about his love so how could I believe that what they had together was real?

Moreover, the characters were flat. There was not enough depth or insight into the characters. I couldn’t connect with Riley’s character by any means. It was probably because the story was told from the hero’s point of view only.

By the way, this review is just my personal opinion. Please don’t let it discourage you from giving this book a try.

I guess I’m in the minority.

Shay Savage does it again. She takes this reader out of her comfort zone of romance reading and it results in this reader being taken on one helluva ride!

We open Specimen as STEN awakes in a lab. He has no memory of who he was before he became a specimen, a super soldier with no name, but just a number. But he does feel a familiar pull to the woman standing in front of him. Dr. Riley Grace.

As Sten undergoes further testing, treatments and training, the pull he feels toward Riley is overpowering. A pull that is nothing of chance but everything of an engineered reaction. But as Sten starts to grasp ahold of pieces of his past can he fully trust the bond he’s formed with his doctor? But nothing is as it appears and it will take Sten and Riley taking some risky chances to find out the truth.

I can’t remember the last time that I read a book and then sat there and re-read the epilogue over and over again. I am not sure if I was looking for a different ending or just wanting to absorb every bit of information – but I just could not stop myself.

Not only does Shay deliver a fantastic alpha male – but she gave us one on steroids. Genetically altered to be possessive, aggressive, sexual and protective of his Riley. I could not get enough of him. And he could not get enough of Riley.

I loved that I fell in love with this story. I loved that I was transplanted into this sort of post-apocalyptic world and not once did this not feel like it was going to be an epic romance. I am not a sci-fi reader. Hell, I hadn’t even watched Star Wars until a few years ago – so this would generally be a theme that I’d say was not for me. That is until Shay came along and turned that on its head.

Solid writing. A fantastic set up to a complex storyline that was still easy to follow. Action packed and intensely intimate. The scenes when Riley was able to let go were powerful, the way these two came together sexually was primal and gritty.

Another stellar job by Shay Savage, the queen of the Male POV! You need to read this. You need to pick this up. I can’t stop thinking about the way this story ended. I have a feeling that months to come when I finally get to meet Shay at a signing, I’m going to need to talk to her about this book and that damn epilogue!

This is one of those book whereby I have an urge to strangle the author someone when I read the final page. Really? She doesn't even have the decency to tell me whether is there a second book or NOT? I'm dying here!

description

Specimen has an interesting mixed of romance, suspense, thriller, sci-fi and dystopia. Even with the lack of descriptive world building, I did felt as if I was transported to a world whereby people are so advance we can make our own synthetic food from the lab.

As per Shay Savage's style, the story was told completely from the hero's POV. He is specimen 79 and named 'Sten' by his personal doctor, the heroine, Riley Grace. Sten woke up in the lab with no recollection of any memory and everything he knew from then onward was told solely by Dr. Grace. He was confused about his role as this modified super soldier and his past, but one thing he was sure is that he crave Riley Grace like an addict craving for his next fix. There is something about her scent, her presence and her touch that affect him on every level.

For the first quarter of the book, I'm feeling rather disconnected with the characters, especially Riley. I doubt everything she said is true and I wonder what is her agenda and motive. Even they are screwing each other all the time, I don't feel the romance. However, by 40%, things start to get more intense and interesting when Sten finally meet some outsider apart from the lab people. They make him start to question things and we get glimpses into a much convoluted plot that involves politics and sabotage from two major players.

description

The danger, suspense and the romance begin to intensify as the plot progress. We get to know more about Riley's role and motivation and Sten's past. Everything slowly came to light and we get to see how strong is their connection. I'm also treated to some nail biting moments, especially at the 90% whereby I still had no idea how things will end for Sten and Riley. I'm a nervous wreck at this point.

description

How will things end for Sten and Riley? Isn't that the million dollar question? Refer back to my sentiment about the ending in the beginning of my review.

I used to be the biggest Shay Savage fan and now i can't stand how she ruins her books with detailed sex scenes with other women.

The blurb is pretty detailed on what the backstory is. The hero has an attachment to the heroine and early in the book he is unable to control his physical urges. Whenever he goes through the training she puts him through or gives him new dosages of treatment he has severe physical urges. He wants the heroine badly but I'm assuming because she's his doctor she can't engage in the physical aspect. So what does she do? She brings him someone for him to fuck.
It's detailed and disgusting and I'm so fucking sick of this shit.

She ends up bringing him prostitutes after each of his stimulated battles. He still fucks them even though he only wants the heroine.

The hero is thinking in his head how he wishes it was the heroine but of course still fucks them without a condom anyway.

Disgusting. This makes me sick and if I had a hard copy I would toss it in the trash.

Why start the book off this way? Why not just leave the whore out and just have the hero wait till he can be with the heroine? Why not have him unable to perform with anyone but the heroine? Why write a revolting piece of trash about him fucking someone else when he supposedly has this insane connection with the heroine?

Here's a direct quote from the book about how he feels when he's done:

So why the HELL would the author add this anyway?
It's just makes me sick.

Shay strikes again! I really like how versatile a writer she is. She's covered many genres and each time she manages to make the story fresh, engaging and hot! This was a fast and enjoyable sci-fi read. It had a great mix of action, suspense and romance.

I'll admit that it did take a bit, about the 30% mark, for me to get into it as I found some of the beginning was slow and technical however, it did lay the groundwork for the premise of the story. But once I got into it, things picked up and it kept me engaged to the very end.

 photo Sepcimen_zpsympky35w.jpg

The main thing I loved about this story was that it kept me guessing. As we meander through this story, it was never clear as to who Sten, this man who has been turned into a super solider, can trust. Even his doctor and love interest, Riley is suspect. I also really liked how the story played with the concept of whether love and that sexual attraction can be programmed or does it go much deeper than that? Does it transcend science and technology?

I will say that the ending really left me wanting more as I have questions that need to be answered!

I have no idea where I am or how I got here.

"You don't have a name per se", she says. "You are specimen number seventy-two of a group of eighty-nine. I plan on referring to you as Sten."
"Sten?"
"Seven. Two. Eight. Nine. S-T-E-N- Sten."

Shay Savage brings us another amazing book packed with lots of action. While reading her book I had a feeling I was watching some action movie.

Back to the story. Sten wakes up in an unknown place, without any memory of who he is. His doctor, Riley, tells him he was volunteer for a special program.

You and others like you agreed to allow yourself to be transformed into stronger, better, soldier to win this war.

I liked the book, but the end didn't work for me. I hope Shay will write a sequel.

I need to remember something.
Something important.
But I don't know what it is.

A soldier, a doctor, and a stark white laboratory full of lies.

I can't even express how excited I am about this book. It's got everything - a hot alpha male trying to remember who he is, a beautiful doctor who is his sole source of companionship, and a whole lot of deceit.

You'll never guess where this one is headed.

You can preorder Specimen today! Live on February 24th!

If you're like me, a fan of action films with a heart and not just blowing up stuff, then you'll like this, for sure. For me, this was like a mashup of Jason Bourne, Rebecca Zanetti's Sin Brothers series and Laurann Dohner's New Species series, with a slight touch of Margaret Atwood. How's that for starter, eh?

There is so much action here that once you find your groove, you wouldn't want to stop. And I loved every minute of it!

Sten is a product of a lab and responsible for his welfare is Riley. And seeing that this is from Sten's POV (male POV that Shay does so well, if I might add), you see things happen from the ground up. You have access to all of Sten's thoughts, doubts and all, including his inexplicable pull towards Riley. As you learn more, you start questioning things the way Sten did. And as you learn more, you feel much for Sten, learning about his past, and seeing what he's gone thru presently.

Riley is one h I had a hard time connecting with. I suppose I'm not as easily convinced as Sten, but I get it, she's also a product of the information fed to her. And by the end, I know she did her best.

I love seeing the heat b/w Sten and Riley from Sten's POV. It was heartfelt and passionate, basal and emotional all at once. And all the action sequences just spoke to the 12 y/o boy stuck inside me. I know it's weird to put those 2 sentences right after another, but in my head it totally makes sense:p

And now that ending! All I can say is that seeing that this is Shay, it's almost expected that it's so unexpected. It really boils down to "are you the half-full or half-empty kind of person?"...

Gah!!

I could go into an all day rant about this book. Actually it's the author that put me in b*tch mode.

She totally screwed up the Evan Arden series. After reading reviews and friends warning me off I walked away from the impending disappointment.

Don't get me started on Commodity by Shay Savage ...........
This is the way the book ends
This is the way the book ends
This is the way the book ends
Not with a bang but a whimper.

My thoughts on Specimen by Shay Savage . First of all the character name 'Riley'. Shay must have been channeling Christine Feehan, the queen of absurd character names. I know.....it's _my_ issue. Moving on.

The whole idea of returning to Mills territory for Seroquel was dumb at the onset. If Riley already had a few weeks of Galen's meds with her than she should have had the anti-psychotic. Certainly enough with her to test and duplicate. If she didn't have the drug then how was Galen functioning? I was into the book 100% until that point and I just knew the rest was going to go downhill. I should have stopped and let my imagination give Galen the happy ending he deserved. Being a glutton for punishment I kept reading.

If I hadn't read 'THE END' I would have thought I missed the last pages in the download. The 'WTF' ending was such a disappointment. I felt like the author dug a plot hole in her story and couldn't get out of it. She thinks repeating the first few pages is a clever way to mind screw her readers.

Not this reader. I'm done. As in DONE. I've been loyal. I would get excited about a new Shay Savage book. I happily handed over my money in exchange for a good book. The stories are good but the endings suck big time. I won't be buying anymore books from this author until I've read reviews. There are plenty of other authors who can end their books without leaving their readers depressed.

I read your notes at the back of the book, Shay. Nope, I don't agree that Galen and Riley's love will always be fresh and new. They are trapped in a repetitive hell, held prisoners by a cruel and oppressive regime.

What started as a 5 star read that ended up being barely 3 stars.

Whoa! This book is exactly what I needed.
A fast paced, high octane, adrenaline fueled love story that had me glued to my Kindle.

Specimen seventy-two of eighty-nine, STEN, awakens in a glaringly bright laboratory with no memory of who he is or why he is there. His doctor, Riley Grace, who he is immediately and inexplicably drawn to, soothes him and explains his current reality. He is the Mills Conglomerate’s new breed of Super Soldier; undergoing cybernetic enhancements and drug experiments to make him faster, stronger, smarter in the hopes of bringing down the Carson Alliance.

As his training and treatments progress, so to does his need for Riley.

Shay Savage does an excellent job giving us a male POV. And with STEN, that POV is all alpha, all the time. I connected with his character immediately. As a reader, I was trying to separate truth from lies, real feelings from synthetic, right along with STEN. It made it incredibly easy to empathize with and root for his character.

Riley was a bit of an enigma in the first half of the book. You can’t help but question everything about her; which, for me, is what hooked me. I’m glad we didn’t get her POV, as it would have taken away any mystery surrounding her and her motives and intentions in the beginning of the book.

With a tight dystopian plot and a pace that throws you back in your seat, this reads like an action movie… With a lot more hot sex. :) But it was the ending that took this book from great to phenomenal. My hat’s off to Shay Savage for not being afraid to take risks with her writing. This book was a breath of fresh air and I’m so glad I took a chance on it. I will definitely be on the lookout for her next book.

If you like a fast paced, action packed novel that makes you think, then I highly recommend you read this book.

☆ I received an ARC via TRSOR PR in exchange for an honest review. Thank you!! ☆

This was a mindfuck of awesomeness.

Imagine yourself waking up in a lab with no memory, no nothing and finding out that you are a merely enhanced superhuman experiment. And the only person you can find an ounce of trust in is a beautiful doctor that may hold the key to everything, or, the power to destroy you. Sounds scary, right?

This was basically a story of corporate warfare, filling in the blanks of Sten's life, and trying to figure out who's good, who's corrupt, and what in the hell is going on in this romantic, suspensful thriller.

For fans of dystopian or post-apocalyptic kind of reads, I believe this will tickle your fancy for sure!!

At some point in the future, a comet passed by Earth too closely, which devastated the ecosystem. Crops failed. Water became scarce. Companies fought for control. Two sides emerged as leaders. Now there is a war between them for ultimate control. Specimen is about a super soldier, designed by one of the sides, and his handler.

The reader is constantly questioning. What is the truth? Who's good or bad? Is this part real? Everything is told from his POV. His memory has been swiped. He's a science experiment undergoing treatments and simulations. He's on testosterone and drug overload with side effects of fight or fuck always trying to break through. His doctor is his trainer and lover. His whole world revolves around her, which makes everything a complicated struggle between brain, heart, hormone and environment.

This story was an adrenaline ride. I haven't come down yet. If you have been waiting for something different, this is for you. It feels a bit post-apocalyptic and dystopian but it's mostly sci-fi and erotic romance. You'll just have to read it and decide for yourself. ;) I found this pic and consider it a perfect message from the author.

~*~ 4.5 STARS ~*~ I LOVED the HELL out of this book! I didn't expect to like it so much, but HOT DAMN that was good! That was a SEXY action-packed, heart-pounding, completely exhilarating good time!

A soldier wakes up in a lab with absolutely no memory and finds himself instantly attracted to the beautiful doctor studying him. He might be just numbers to her, but there is something about the captivating Dr. Riley Grace that boils his blood and makes his body scream with intense lust. All it takes is a touch from the good doctor and he is in his happy place. There is so much more to this story that meets the eye and if you're a fan of science fiction and even if you're not, you should give SPECIMEN a try. Savage is a great romantic suspense write. She lures you in with her words and her storyline and then just punches you in the stomach with an ending like this one.

After reading the epilogue, I wanted to experience it all over again. Did I want a different ending? I'm not sure, but I sure as hell wanted to absorb myself in Savage's world again.

Now, I'm not a total fan of post-apocalyptic romances. I think that's because there aren't a lot of choices out there with the genre, but Shay took this to another level. She gave us an epic romance between two unlikely people, and poured some feels into the sucker! I LOVED it! I ENJOYED it immensely.

Oh and did I mention the male POV in SPECIMEN? Oh yeah baby! It was SOOOO good! If you are looking for a romantic suspense with some sci-fi elements and with an ending you will not be able to shake...SPECIMEN is your next read.

This synopsis sounds awesome. I really want to read this, but then I looked at the cover again after my initial cursory glance. I was more interested in the title, Specimen, sounds lovely gruesome & medical. But upon second glance, I noticed how very very wrong the cover is. Was this cover meant to convey a medical nuance? If so, it's WRONG. WRONG. WRONG. That is the Caduceus of Hermes, you know the god of messengers, merchants, commerce, thieves; that's why there are wings on the staff, like the wings on Hermes' sandals. What this cover was supposed to be a picture of was the Rod of Asclepius - the god of healing, most famous physician in Ancient Greece, had priest physicians in his temple, medical schools. You see the difference? One is the god of messengers and travel, the other of healing and doctors.

This is the Rod of Asclepius and what should be on the cover, unless this is a book about thieves and commerce. I know this isn't as fancy a symbol, but it's the correct medical symbol. And yes, Hermes is more fun, but doctors make sure you keep living, so, they're kind of more necessary than the god of text messages.

Wow!

Sexy, intriguing, unique, mixed in with action and a bit of mind-fuck!!!
Bravo, Shay Savage! I wasn't expecting that!!

This book had me so enthralled. I couldn't put it down.

Sten is strong, beautiful, super protective, and lives in a lab!
What?

He's poked and prodded, and pretty much treated as a science experiment!
But that's just scratching the surface of this book!!

There was some naughty, delicious parts, some emotional times, making me feel so sad for Sten, and a whole lot of wtf???

That was one hell of a ride!
Absolute must read!!

Let me first say that I normally would not read this type of story. I'm not a reader of topics/subjects that I feel are outside the realm of possibility. However, I am a visual person when it comes to these topics/subjects, so if it's a movie, I'm there! So to say it took me a while to read this book, is an understatement. I had heard SO many excellent praises for Shay Savage's work, that I had to take the plunge. And I am ridiculously glad that I did.

The first aspect of the book that blew me away was the POV. The story is told solely in Sten's POV. I haven't read too many other books, other than M/M books, that are told solely from the male's perspective, but what I have read doesn't even compare to this. THIS was really REALLY good. It made the story ridiculously more intense. I LOVED IT!.

You can read from the blurb that this is not going to be a 'romantic' romance. And it was and it wasn't LOL It was action packed like nothing I've ever read, suspenseful with wait ....what?? moments at every corner, but it was also sooooo sexy and kinda sweet (I can read sweet in anything lol)...the connection Sten and Riley have is palpable. I felt it thru the author's prose. GAH, I really loved this book! ~~ I'm secretly hoping for a movie lol

I MUST give props to Shay Savage for keeping me on my toes throughout practically this entire book. There were times I related to Sten so much it was scary. Because even I didn't have a clue who was what or what to believe. I was just as distrustful of everything I read as Sten was living it... it was frikkin brilliant!!

I would be remiss if I didn't tell you the one aspect of this book that made me go ... WHAT, ARE YOU KIDDING ME?? And that is the ending, or is it...i got twitchy people TWITCHY .... *blink *blink*

If you're a fan of sci-fy romance novels written by a ridiculously talented author ... Specimen needs to be on your TBR #TRUST

Ok wow, this book was a bit of a sci-fi romance. It still had all of the good bits that I love about this authors books. A sexy alpha male, a strong heroine, loads and loads of some of the hottest sex ever, and a really great and intriguing and different romance. This book starts with SO MANY questions and while I was getting a few answers along the way more and more questions still kept coming and so I kept turning the pages like crazy trying to figure what the heck was going on. I mean, up until the very end it was this way. Speaking of the ending, seriously it was an OMG moment that made me question even more. Like made me question the timeline of this story and how many times it had occurred before or what would happen after. Goodness gracious, I loved that ending. I adore endings that make me think.

Great writing and awesome story as usual by this author. I do always love her men. They are always so darn and sexy and over the top. Just my cup of tea. I wonder if we will get other books about other couples in this book or even another book about this same couple. Hmmm. The author has left me with tons and tons of things to contemplate after this one!

It took me a while, over 3 weeks, to finish Specimen. That never happens to me - I either read straight through, or DNF a book that is not to my liking. I've never dragged my feet like this when involved in a story. The only reason I kept going back for more was...to see how the ending played out. It was not what I expected and honestly, it pissed me off. Although I liked the hero Galen/Sten this was not for me.

As always Shay writes an alpha male like no else and just when you think she has given you her number 1 guy she brings in someone else! In the Specimen take her alpha male, up it to the maximum level, set up a bad ass storyline, and add just enough hot, steamy, romance.....well now you have the perfect Savage book! I fell head over heels with STEN, a super soldier, trying to find out who is and what brought him to this existence. His nurse tells him one thing but his instincts tell him something else. You will stay up all night on this one...I couldn't get enough and the ending....let me just Phenomenal!

I should never have read this. I downloaded the book based on the synopsis thinking 'not bad'. What i got was a porn novel with so many sex scenes and anguished emotions and 'does he love or does she' moments. I'm not sexist but i can see why women like this book. A 24 yr old soldier pummeling a 30 yr old woman 5 times a day. Even the story is weak as all that happens is he gets made then runs away then tries to get the stuff to ensure he can stay as he is which happens to be in the enemy camp. At least I only wasted a day during train trips.

Book Review: 10 Stars!!!

I want to devour her. I want to punish her for putting me through such agony. I want to scream and cry and fuck.

One of the few books I had the chance to read during the past 3 years which has made me feel so so so so so much and, at the same time, not just leaving me speechless, but most importantly, incapable to put my thoughts and feelings about it in a review that will make sense and will cover every aspect.

Actually, every book that I have read by Shay Savage had the same impact on me. I was left speechless and with a blank in my brain. It’s like she has magic powers. Honestly! It’s borderline insane……

SPECIMEN is a book like no other. It’s a category of its own. It may be about the love story of STEN and Riley, but it’s more more more more than that. And even their love is a whole different level. From the blurb, already, I saw that this book, not only will about to be MAJESTIC, but also will get engraved in my heart, my brain and every tiny cell that my body possess. And I was R I G H T!!

STEN and Riley.

“Patient” and doctor.

But there’s more………

She’s my doctor, my friend, my lover.

Sten is a guy that wakes up suddenly in a lab, naked and striped down to a hospital bed. He has no memories and no idea where he is, what is the place he woke up at and what he is doing there. Until, Dr. Riley Grace makes her appearance. She is his “doctor” who made him what he is now, a Specimen. Or, better a super soldier. And since nothing about them, the story or the book is the usual, the bond between them isn’t also the usual. Although, the love they share is undoubtedly REAL, there is a more complicated history behind it. So, little by little, Sten is adopting to that environment while coming closer and closer to Riley. He gets trained, learns how to fight and how to…….. satisfy both him and Riley. Soon, though, everything is going to get upside down.

I’m not going to say anything else about the plot because I will totally spoil the whole experience that this gem provides to every lucky reader that will read it. Because any praise said about it, it will never be enough to make you feel it deep in your bones.

But, Shay, except from an extremely addicting book and out-of-this-universe story, she gave me a BBF who went straight to the Top 1 to keep company to my other No. 1: STEN!. He is pure magic. I have never met any other character like him, no matter the sex. He may be Riley’s “submissive” but he is doing it with a glory and a way that makes him much more unique – if that is possible -, unforgettable and stuck to the heart forever. Also, the fact that he wakes up a new man in the story without a past doesn’t mean anything because Sten is a fighter and a totally different Specimen with more layers, inner resistance against anything that is forced on him, will power than the others. I simply cound’t get enough! As for Riley, she at first seems “simple” but she is anything but. She has also many layers and inner strength beneath her which makes her the ideal match and the other half of Sten.

Our bodies may be connected below, but our souls are joined in our eyes.

Shay Savage didn’t left me once again speechless and brainless. This time, she did something that I have never seen to any other author I have read. What that is? Well, she……. made a standalone novel has a CLIFFHANGER!!!! Honestly, I was left open-mouthed for over 24 hours after I finished it. The shock that I went into, was one in a lifetime. But, that being said, I have to happily admit the end she gave to this story was a masterpiece and quite suitable. “Irresistibly Unpredictable” in every sense. I might became a bit frustrated and angry because of the way she ended it, but after I dwelled on it, I saw clear-as-day how awful would be if she had given them the “normal” end of almost every love couple. I would probably be more disappointed than satisfied if she had done that, simply because, with that, she would diminish every unique-ness and magic that Sten and Riley fought to create through the pages of SPECIMEN.

I don’t simply recommend it to ANY reader out there, but I say that it’s a MUST because it makes enter a totally different field of literature.

I love Shay Savage's work. I don't know how many times I've said this, nor how many more times I'll say it. So bear with me because she is a favorite author.

This book is entirely in male POV. I adore male POV books and no one does it better than Shay Savage. Go ahead and laugh at what I'm about to say now...but, for me, not even male authors do the male POV as well as Ms. Savage. She creates male characters so natural, so real, that I'm always blown away that this is a female romance author.

Alright, on to Specimen. It's dystopian. My favorite genre. Because I've read so much of it, I have to say this book needed a little more world building. I also think a more solid, deeper connection between the specimens would have given the story that gut wrenching feeling many of us romance readers look for in books. The relationship between the MCs made me a little uncomfortable. I kept wondering if it was consensual or manufactured. It just made me a little squeamish I guess.

Then, I need to talk about the ending-nonending. I can't call it a cliffhanger because there are no plans for a sequel. It also does end even though we are left with wanting to know what's next. If you've read some of my other reviews of cliffhanger endings, you know they generally send me into a raving ranting rage. --- This one didn't. I don't know if it was because I had forewarning or because the author acknowledged and explained it at the back of the book. I even waited a day or two before reviewing to make sure the rage wasn't going to blindside me. But no, I seem to be ok with the ending, other than wishing for a sequel.

Do I recommend it? I recommend all of Shay Savage's books. Some more than others, but all written so well, the pace so smooth, that I often find myself a little confused when I look up from one of her books and find myself in the real world.

So there you have it. My take on Specimen. Except that I have to mention that amazing cover. Favorite cover of the year for me so far.
