FULL LENGTH, STANDALONE NOVEL (No Cliffhanger)

Mila Ali’s fiancé, Warren, is killed in a corporate plane crash. Grief wraps around her heart and soul – cushioning her to the outside world and the reality that is now her life. Warren had been many things to her: friend, lover, and even a part-time savior. After spending too many years working too many hours for a large corporation, Mila was able to let go and love Warren, even at the expense of losing her traditional Somalian father’s favor.

Nothing could have prepared her for such a devastating loss, yet the fragile bubble she has built around her heart is shattered when Mila comes face to face with Blake Baldwin – Billionaire, womanizer, Warren’s boss…. And the owner of that fateful airplane.

Blake Baldwin is too handsome for words, with a body that could melt hearts and a piercing stare that cut through Mila’s every defense. The encounter seems to ignite a fascination in the enigmatic Billionaire, one that sends him to the beautiful Somalian’s door again and again…

Mila is not looking for love—been there, done that, but Blake will not rest until Mila Ali is his. He thrusts her into a frenzy of confusion, deception, and passion. Blake just may be the bandage Mila’s wounded heart and neglected body needs, or he could be the biggest heartbreak of all.

***Contains spoilers***

During the first 20% of the book I can't say I connected with the characters at all. Blake was egotistical and narcissistic and Mila seemed like a pushover. She catches him in his office with one of his employees down on her knees under his desk and yet minutes later, Mila's watching him shower and talking about how she wants him? Really? And then he tells her to wait for him for a month while he goes away? And he's married?

Halfway through the book and I still didn't like either of them. I didn't believe a word out of Blake's mouth and Mila talked about not wanting to take his money, but was okay with him buying her a car and working deals at her job so that she'd be the highest paid sales rep at the company. She's okay with him taking her to Japan for a month (which her job has no problem with?) and then going home to have sex with his wife. Blake has no respect for women, including Mila, and thinks of them all as dolls for him to play with. Dolls to bring him pleasure and not the other way around.

He tells Mia that he's separated from his wife, yet goes home to Diane to watch movies and eat popcorn.

And even though he's this high profile billionaire, no one seems to have an issue with him being a married man and cheating on his wife. Not his friends and not hers. She tries to call her sister, Lido, out on cheating on her girlfriend, but sees no issue with being a mistress.

I skimmed the remainder of the book and although it turned out the Diane wasn't exactly an upstanding citizen herself, her and Blake were still married while he was falling in love with Mila. I guess I should have guessed by the title how this would go, but I believed that if I cared about the characters, I could invest in the story more.

4 unexpected and delightfully erotic starts. I have to admit I so was not prepared for Blake Baldwin. He swept in and completely had me screaming by like page fifteen! I also have to admit that I liked Mila being an Ethiopian immigrant and hardworking woman. Major kudos to Amarie Avant for her writing style and her choice of characters because I loved both Blake and Mila.

Mila left Ethiopia for a chance to pursue her education and to avoid marrying the man her father arranged for her to. When the story opens up, Mila is dealing with the death of her fiancé and struggling to deal with Blake. Blake makes no secret of his desire to have her and goes as far as paying her mortgage which lands her in his office. Mila's fiercely independent, good hearted and interesting. She fights Blake tooth and nail before succumbing to whatever he's offering.

Blake is not the image everyone thinks of him. He wasn't born with privilege and has more street in him than people would ever guess. He is all about taking what you want and doing whatever necessary to have it. In the case with Mila, he does everything he can to not only have her, but also to possess and own her. He's a determined, powerful, demanding, devious man and yet there's good in him which makes him even more potent and interesting.

The read honestly messes with you a bit because at certain points I was sure Blake was a psychopath. I was also annoyed with Mila for being so trusting. While I liked them both, the story is spun in such a way that you're kept guessing until the last page where it all comes together and makes sense.

Readers, Don't let the title upset ya! Think "READ ME! " before the triggers of the word 'mistress' upsets ya !

"The Good Mistress" by Amarie Avant was a very engaging read for me from get go! I loved both Blake and Mila's characterization in this dramatic, romantic suspense and how the story moved at a steady pace but with great detail!

Although Mila had just recently lost her fiance', Warren in a plane crash she soon meets drop dead gorgeous, Blake who just so happens to be the owner of the plane that her fiance' was killed in as well as Warren's former boss. Warren's attraction to Mila was electric but Mila lost the love of her life and was grieving and in already feeling that " been there, done that phase in her life and doubted Warren's intentions from the start. Blake was never known as a quitter so he does what he does best -- pursues and gets what he wants- Mila! ...until he sees Mila is his ONE!

Now watch how Avant makes the story engrossing by introducing memorable secondary characters who some you will love and others you will just hate! Okay now you have the gist of the story but you really need to read the meat and potatoes of "The Good Mistress" yourself because then comes more twists and turns, more drama, the secrets, deception and lies that rich Blake built making this story even more engaging and all the more memorable to me.

Although this book is mentioned as a standalone, I think that Avant could possibly create a spinoff from the diverse secondary characters or just a short story on Blake and Mila's wedding ...hint-hint!

"The Good Mistress: A Billionaire Romance" by Amaire Avant

My Thoughts...

This author really knows how to keep your attention and this was definitely one good read. When I first started reading i wasn't for sure where and how the story was going but being the avid reader that I couldn't stop reading this intriguing romance that even had some mystery to it with all of its twist and turns. The heroine and hero in the story...Mila and Blake are quite a interesting pair from the very beginning with all of the drama that lasted all the way to the end of this story. What will happen when Mila meets Blake? I liked how this author brought in the secondary characters into the story being so well developed, portrayed, defined and even very believable. All of this helped give the story one interesting intriguing read. So, what is the story about? Man meets a woman at her fiance's funeral...and this story will take off from there. There are so many facets to this story....from a funeral, hot seamy sex, [siblings...sisters, parents, friends], a murder, lies to even some interesting secrets that will come to light. Now, I will stop here and just say to get it all you will have to pick up "The Good Mistress" and see for yourself how well this author brings out this incredible story so well to the readers. You will get a well rounded and a well written writing style that will keep you on the edge of your seat turning the pages to see what will be happening next. In the end will Mila and Blake get what they truly want from each other? Would I recommend? YES! Be aware this is a adult read and I loved that it was a standalone read!

Thank you to the author for the gift for my honest opinion of the novel.

I was very interested in this one when I first read the blurb but I didn't connect with the characters or the story. The writing is 3POV and is confusing and unreadable, the heroine is acting like a child not a 30 year mature women, also the hero Blake is not my favorite, and on top of that you don't have epilogue so for me is like unfinished story.

Ping Pong! The characters, the dialogue and the plot are all over the place. Very disappointed. I have read some really great books by this author, but this one is a convoluted mess. Between the editing errors and the confusing dialogue, I almost quit reading this. I kept hoping it would get better.

Wow..This book was super unexpected and I am sooo glad I was able to give it a try. I loved the cover initially and that's what prompted me to request this book, Reading the blurp further piqued my interest. After reading this..It totally blew my mind. let me just say this is my first book by Amarie and will certainly will not be my last.
This story was a complex mix of romance, erotica, suspense and crime thriller all rolled into a nice pretty package. From start to finish you want to know what is going to happen next until your finally at the end of the book without even realizing.
The romance was front and center and picked up right away, and Boy was it super hot sexy times with Mr Baldwin! He was sex personified and Mila was just the right combination of strength, smarts and submission.

Overall wonderful read!

Loved it

The storyline was great it kept me wondering who was the murderer. The sex was great and was glad to see the characters coming together in the end. My only wish is they had a Epilogue at the ending to tie everything up, just my opinion.

Not A Great Read At All

So with this book I'm not even sure where to begin..... first of all let me say that the book stops at 78% and the rest is a preview to her book Fearless. which btw I absolutely loved. Had I read this mistress book before Fearless it would make me not want to read any more of her books. so I have come to the conclusion that maybe somebody told her about her writing and she did better in the next book because this one was simply awful and it was simply awful for the following reasons

1) her books to not flow seamlessly from one scene to the other. I would find myself reading about Blake being on a rock climbing trip with his friend when the scene before in the previous paragraph he was with Mila. I had to stop and do a double-take and go back and read and see if I missed something. Alexis Lee how did he get here when two sentences ago he was with her the whole book was like that and it took me longer to read than it should have because I did a lot of going back to previous pages to see if I had truly missed something.

2) the majority of the sex between Mila and Blake was inferred and implied and not an actual detailed love scene. The sides of few cases of oral that book was more than halfway over before she started actually describing in detail the sex they were having. Which bothers me in a romance novel. especially since there were a few scenes where he had sex with his wife and it did not fade out. speaking of that it brings me to my third point

3) I don't like that neither was his mistress. even though at the very very end of the book she explains the relationship with his wife and what a bad person she turned out to be, in the beginning he seemed like he was an unrepentant manhore. I mean Hello his secretary was on her knees and his office giving him a BJ when Mila walked in. And then a few pages later he's trying to go down on her in the break room of her work place and she's allowing him to do that like she's weak.

4) and what a sick twisted b**** her sister Lido turned out to be I mean really why did she have to make her that type of person.

5) she does a lot of throwing things in there without really explaining them. for example Todd turned out to be a hacker that was trying to sabotage Blake from the inside. but they don't explain that during the book at all. it's just a couple of sentences almost at the very end which again led me to trying to go back and see did anyone seem suspicious of him during the whole book or was it like that the whole time and I just missed that. No actually it seems as if it was just thrown in the book as an afterthought that was supposed to explain how distracted he has been the whole book with answering phone calls and taking trips far away to take care of business and you never really know why until the very end. oh yeah by the way he was a hacker he was in cahoots with the ex-wife. but it was never part of the storyline at all and then all of a sudden it's just there. like really?

6) the inside man who was trying to sabotage blank his name was Todd but they called him Tom. which was confusing as I was trying to determine who the heck is Tom and where did he come from. This was before I realized that Tom and Todd were one in the same.

7) the book ended abruptly. like I'm thinking I'm going to flip to another chapter or an epilogue or something like that. But then bam it's just over. Almost as if the author just got tired of running and said f*** it. Mila goes to see Blake in a different country to apologize for walking away from him after she found out that he was the guy her father wanted her to marry because he had been communicating with him all along trying to mend broken fences (yes again this is one of those jumbled together things being explained in the last few pages of the book) and then the book is just over. I hated that. prior to its abrupt ending there was a bunch of jumbled mess in there that explains in a few pages some of the stuff they've hinted at during the book like that lady with the purple eyes is a federal agent and not somebody else trying to blackmail him and that they had been investigating the whole thing with Warren's death, Warren's mistress, Blake's wife, this guy that supposedly works for Blake that is doing some investigating, all of that stuff she threw in there at the end like maybe she realized when she was almost done she had holes in her stories and needed to give an explanation but it was half-hearted and haphazard at best and again right before an abrupt ending which made it kind of jarring. I had to go back and read it again to make sure I was understanding and I did this and this believe that the book ended abruptly as it had

8) she hinted at blank being a murderer and then it seemed like at the end she changed her mind and made his wife a murderer and Warren's mistress was killed but not by him but one of her conquests like I said one of those things at the end of the book just thrown in there

Another good read by author Amarie Avant. In this story we meet Mila Ali and Blake Baldwin to polar opposites in every way. Blake is instantly attracted to Mila and must make her his in every way but one. He can't marry her as he is already married. Mila is carrying around her own baggage that is playing havoc with her emotions and self-esteem. As Blake begins his chase to capture all of Mila and she begins her own inner tug-of-war, it is obvious that these two will enter a romance worthy of the record books...or will they it seems that Blake has a lot of secrets and he is desperately seeking how to tie up loose ends hoping Mila does not learn all of them, especially those tied to the death of her fiance Warren.

Warren's mother and brother were too much for me. Warren's mother for her generalization of Mila and Keith for how he treated her and sleeping with her sister. Not to mention Mila's sister Lido, that child was way too much.

What was confusing to me in this story was:
If Blake had no involvement in Warren's death why did he feel so guilty and

Why did is look has if Blake did have Warren and Lola murdered, if he didn't?

Why did Blake lie to Mila about the relationship with his wife Diana? The story made it seem is if she pushed his buttons often and he followed through every time.

Blake was portrayed like a man who not only had is cake, ate it and went back for another slice.

This whole Brendan Walker, being Blake Baldwin (threw the story off for me a little). I get the fact that he wanted to reinvent himself, it made me feel like he was on some level ashamed of where he came from.

I would have rated it 5 stars, but for the minor mistakes of:
Calling Diana Baldwin - Diana Blake
Some minor grammar issues

I genuinely really like this author's book. I actually really enjoyed the Fear series, I enjoyed the series because of the strong female and male leads. This book I didn't like the lead at all, I thought she was extremely weak and didn't have that fighting spirit until the end of the book. Who would want to be known as a whore publicly? I didn't even like the male lead either it took way too long for him to develop any redeeming qualities. I feel like if the beginning was similar to the end I would give it five stars. This book is also very similar to Shara Azod's book Beautiful Skin, which I highly recommend.

Impressed

I must admit...I thoroughly enjoyed this one and I am glad Amarie didn't make Blake a murderer...I also having not been kind in my critique of one of her series....kudos to her...excellent writing...the twists in the story had me pulling out my hair...by the end..I was hoping someone put a bullet in the sister..what a witch...Blake is the epitome in billionaire bad boy alpha...Mila is a strong young woman..principled...but still carried on hot and heavy with a married man...and hot hot sex was all over this book...panty wetting hot sex....o.m.g.

SAY WHAT?!?😡

Ok...first I need to slap my own face for buying both books. I could not finish either...just stomach churning nastiness from page one!
I guess there may be some substance to this story but I cannot bring myself to wade through the quicksand too get to it.
I let myself be convinced to try mostly because of the reviews. Usually that works but not all the time. The writing style was choppy and all over the place. And no way this male whore could possibly "fall in love".
Mannn....what a drag! Well..Delete..and onto the next.👎

This book started off with a bang. Mila was a strong educated woman who had her life together but her emotions took a hard hit when her fiance died. Then enters Blake, a sexy self made millionaire who had it all, at least he thought he did, until her met her. Mila. From there his motives are questioned as well as his past. His history is dark and so are his associates. This story had a great plot with is a steady pace of sex and intrigue. Loved it!

Mila and Blake start off as a fling according to Mila but with each day they become closer and closer to each other. I love how the author shows that even though their relationship is tested with secrets, lies, and with people who mean them harm somehow it makes them become closer together. What a great read!!

A great read

This is my first time reading this author's work and I find it enjoyable. Blake and Mila's story is complicated but came together in the end. The author took her time revealing the intricacies of each character, their flaws as well as their beauty. I will definitely read other books by this author.

Mistress???

This was another good one by Amarie Avant. Now I don't condone the whole mistress thing, but Mila and Blake seemed perfect together despite all of the craziness that went on in this book. Diane was crazy, Lido was a hot mess, Mila was judgemental, and Blake was obsessed. All that being said the book kept me engaged and I would recommend reading it.

Intriguing, enjoyable read

There is an appealing depth in plot and background stories that kept me quite intrigued. The emotion expressed by both the male AND female love interest is revealing but not sappy. I really enjoyed the slow unveiling of the mysterious Blake.

I was pleasantly surprised! 3.5 sly stars

Thanks to book 2 of this series leaving audible on the 4th, I finally buckled down and read it as I was about out of time. Boy am I ever glad I did. In the end, I didn’t listen half as much as a frantically flipped through my kindle. I could not wait to see what happened next as this book was FULL of intrigue and mystery. A lot of which remain unsolved but I’m assuming will be done so in book 2.
Let me preface this next part by admitting: I am picky about my narrators! I have long standing favorites and am enthralled with the tenor and cadence of their voices. The different layers and inflection have hooked me in to read just about anything they narrate. So all of that being said, I didn’t care for either narrator: Ryan Turner or Lacy Laurel. Neither did it for me unfortunately so here’s to hoping the next set on book two are different.
The H in this story I don’t like at all at first. He came off as your typical F-boy to a T. He slowly came around and changed my perception thankfully. He is still a bit of a mystery and I THINK everything is on the up and up but not positive…Blake is a tricky character with many layers. A great one was when he turned a little Alpha. I love a possessive H.
Then we had Mila, our h who had a heart as big as Mississippi. Good intentions and al aye putting everyone else’s needs before her own. Unfortunately, people in her life see this and take great pride in using this against her. She has morals and also a wall up as she list her fiancé and came to an epiphany after he’d passed.
The story takes you on a slightly darker romantic journey with tons of who dun it times thrown in to keep it spicy. Speaking of, those scenes were hot hot hot for sure. The book definitely did not lack for that.
All in all a really good book to take me out of reality for awhile which I loved. I’m officially a fan of Amarie Avant and will always read just about anything she produces.
