Fated Destruction #1

The Scarlet Thread

Rate this book
An alternate cover edition exists here.

My name Kaidance Monroe, and sometimes when I touch people, I see how they die. After I saw my little brother’s death but failed to stop it, my parents abandoned me to a juvenile detention facility. I don’t let people touch me anymore. Not my fingertips, not my skin, not my heart. I make my own clothes by stitching together the donations we get; usually a bunch of crap that fits like a parachute. My sweater is a patchwork of different shades of inky, dark squares. I make plain gray skirts that hang to my knees, with cute or funny T-shirts sewed in. They clash ironically with my unsmiling face. My Allstar high-tops are black and frayed, like my soul.

I also wear a chunk of brightly colored legos around my neck. My little brother was working on it the day he died. The day I failed to save him. It’s unfinished, so I’ll never know what it was meant to be. Most days, I just try to get by. But then I got a visit from a cute guy, who tricked me into giving up my secrets. He said I was special. That he needed me. For a while, I believed him. But once I found out what I could really do, I learned everybody wanted the power I possessed. The power to destroy deities. To kill gods. To end the world... or to save it. My heart is torn, and those I loved most betrayed me. I'm trying so hard to do what's right, but nobody can tell me what that is anymore, and the moral boundaries I'd always let define my life have been shattered. Whose rules should I obey now? Or do I have to make my own?

The Scarlet Thread is a dark fantasy for fans of Greek mythology and Gothic romance. Fans of Fallen and Percy Jackson will be captivated by this mashup of fallen angels and forgotten gods.

"If there's one thing I've learned in all my years, it's this: death will not be cheated."
What would you do when you have the ability to see how people would eventually die when you get to touch them? Would you consider it as a gift knowing that somehow, you'll get to warn people of their fate, or consider it as a curse for this ability tortures you as you see death in everything that you touched? For Kaidance it's the latter.

After she failed on saving her brother from the death that haunted her ever since the first time she touched him, her whole life was turned. She was sent to a juvenile detention facility, abandoned by her family and branded as a murderer of her own brother she desperately tried to save. She thought that she could just live her life without touching anyone and she could live her whole life faking to be normal. But that's before a guy suddenly appears on the Juvi to visit her, that she realized that worst things are just about to come.

The Scarlet Thread is my 3rd D.S Murphy book and seriously, after the disastrous encounter with the first 2 book, I wasn't expecting much from this book. That marketing line, "Fans of Fallen and Percy Jackson will be captivated by this mashup of fallen angels and forgotten gods. " on the blurb didn't help the cause because I HATED Fallen Series down to its very core, I guess it kinda balance because I loved Percy Jackson series.

This book contains a couple of cliche and tropes I really wish would just stop on my pnr read, but it didn't bother me one bit. I was so engrossed with the history and with the events that happened in the book for me to be really bothered with it. I mean, this book was like a savior, I was having this awful book slump in months that I just couldn't get away from when I started this book, and before I noticed it, I was already 60% on the book. It was one of the best feeling ever, for a book to have been able to grab your full attention from the first till the last page.

I could have given this a 4 star rating but the fact that this has been published as a first part of the whole story of the 1st book is really getting on my nerves so I'm deducting one star. But I will not deny the fact that I highly recommends this book out of all the D.S Murphy books you may see out there.

I'm not sure why I bought this, but it was pretty good, an interesting blend of mythologies (old Greek & Christian). I liked the world a lot, the characters less so, especially the MC. Her motivations didn't always make sense to me, but I'm a content old guy & she's an abused young girl, so that might account for it.

After reading this, I looked up the author & found he is a fairly new, young & prolific one which didn't surprise me. This reads like a first novel & had a couple of really irritating issues. At one point, the MC takes off her gloves to eat, shakes a hand mentioning that the glove was on, & then meticulously cleans her hands before putting her gloves back on. Things like that break the story for me. Also, it ends on a cliff-hanger which I detest, but seems to be a trademark of these YA UF & PNR series.

I doubt I'll read further in the series, but it might really work for some of my friends & kids.

~IS HE A TORCH?~

I've been looking for a book all day that grabs me and doesn't let go. Then I stumbled upon this beauty. At first it was the gorgeous cover that caught my eye. Then I read the blurb. It was new. Something different and interesting. I bought the book.

What a buy it was. It has that tone about it,when you read everything else around you fades into the background. (Kids wrecked the house while I was immersed in this book) It pulls you in. Everything flows so naturally through out the book. There's plenty of action and a little bit of romance(wondering which direction that will go) What had me bitting at my nails was Purie What is happening there. And why did he hesitant. Ahhh. ..........
I can not wait for the next book.

(χμ)

In the beginning the book was interesting.
But more and more inconsistencies appeared, as well as neglected details and more knowledge in human and interpersonal behaviour.
All in all the author has potential but needs more life experience.

Here are a few things that I didn’t like.
The continuously detailed description of the clothes they are wearing. Like excerpts out of a fashion magazine and not a fantasy story.
Just unnecessary.
How often exactly does she wash her gloves and why does the author feel the need to share this important deed with us continuously??
And that’s not all, it is like the author has nothing else to write about but to tell you every day our protagonist gets out of bed, how she cleans her gloves, the feeling she has while putting them on and precisely what clothes she chooses to wear!!
Bloody hell, who is interested in such repetitive mundane tasks in a fantasy book?

She gets one visitor, after years of no one showing up, and not once does she ask who he is? Not once does she ask what he is doing here? Not once does she ask what his purpose is?
That is just weird.

Her sudden sexual pull towards Sitri, doesn’t feel right somehow. Maybe because it just seems so out of character for her, after what we have learned about her beforehand. Maybe because she always mentions it combined with his appearance.
Just weird.

The fact that everyone threatened her life after she successfully defeated Mist, was not very logical.
Wasn’t it Mist in the first place, who simply attacked her, tried to murder her and our heroine simply defended herself?!?
That just makes no sense to me. Blaming her for defending herself. And our heroine played just along, wallowing in self pity. Instead of standing up for herself and telling how it is.
It is getting weirder.

More often than not, I wish the story would just take this or that turn. It would have been so much more interesting.
Like when she is visiting Puriel in his cell, god how I wished she would have just up and ran away with him!! What an interesting turn would that have been.
Sadly it wasn’t meant to be.
Wasn’t it her intention to spare the others from more attacks and possible death? She told us so...but it was forgotten the next minute...nothing in that direction happens.
She gets several epiphanies throughout the story but nothing ever comes out of it. The author just lets it trickle away.
But she even can’t stick to her own visions!! We get told exactly how her envisioned death of Matt happens. Outside. Grass. But after an incident Indoors, she starts doubting her visions. She starts believing she can overcome them. Or counteract them. So am I the only person as a reader who realises it was bloody OUTSIDE???

In general the author swings between a good fantasy story and a bad disoriented young adult book, back and forth.
This cannot only be observed between the heroines epiphanies and not following through. But also in the behavioural pattern of the other characters, between thousand year old gods and back to acting as normal humans.
Many train of thoughts just didn’t make any sense, or contradict themselves.

This is a quick and easy read. Partly due to that this book is being split into multiple parts. I will say that this part of the book was really good. I <3 mythology and this book didn't disappoint me. It's about a girl named Kaidance who is shunned by her family due to the fact that she can see when someone is going to die by touching them. When she is away at a juvenile center she is rescued by others like her. We find out that she is even more special than they thought. Now she is wanted by both sides for a war. This book leaves you with a huge cliff hanger. As in it ends right in the middle of the battle. So, I'm really hoping that the author doesn't take too long to get the next part out because I want more of this story.

A nice blend of Greek Mythology and fantasy. Romance was done quite well, subtle but still very much part of the story. I did find it a little repetitive at times, and found most of the characters apart from Sitri a little annoying. But if you're looking for Greek mythology books, I would recommend this, it touches on things like the Fates which don't get a lot of main focus in other books. Kinda like Percy Jackson, but more serious and involving things like angels and devils.

Will be reading book two, the plot was quite interesting.

Fantastic read! Can not wait for more of this story! This is not my normal go to for a read, I have a hard time reading books about "young adults" because they're usually very immature and always annoying and obnoxious.
In this case I found myself really truly enjoying Kaidance. She has had the crappiest life, though it wasn't always that way.
Abandoned by her parents in a "institution" for the murder of her brother, she has a special ability. She can see the moment when a person is going to die. Though she doesn't have the exact date she knows how it's going to happen.
Full of Greek Mythology and intrigue, we are only given the first portion of Kaidance's story. I have so many questions that I am having a hard time waiting for the next book.

Yes this ends in a cliffhanger in the worst possible place but it doesn't matter. I will wait for the next release to have my questions answered and get my fix of Kaidance. I only hope the wait isn't too long.

So this is part one, not book one, just part one with hopefully the rest of the book to follow soon. It is a great start to a book, but if you have looked this author up on Amazon he has a few part one's out for different books AND if you visit his website listed in the back of this book you will see even more part one's written under slightly different names. Now supposedly if you follow this same link (I assume it's in the back of all his books) and sign up for his newsletter you will receive the rest of these books when he's done writing them. So, while I hope for the best and would give this part one a 4/5 I lowered it to a 3/5 because the cynical part of me is thinking some kind of scam.

Sadly I was not informed of the Greek mythology theme before I started the book. It's my least favorite of all themes as it has been done, done, and overdone throughout the years. The Gods, their drama, their powers... I just feel like I'm reading something I've already read a hundred times already. Boo.

I liked Kaidance, though. She knows her strengths and accepts them. She knows her weaknesses and accepts them. She knows when to pick a fight, and when to pick flight. Her emotions are a cluster but she strives to not be a horrible person. Very refreshing.

I'm really looking forward to more work from this author. This type of literature is right up my alley. I love books about mythology and when I find those books that have a unique take on the myths, it's even better. This book has the main characters of mythology, but it's not always obvious. Figuring out who is who was part of the fun for me while I read it.

This was only part one, so I can't give my full opinion of it yet. I love the mythology angle, but so far none of the characters are too appealing or likable, including the protagonist.

DNF

I was loving the beginning of the book. The set up with the Juvie Detention Center was well grounded and the conflicts were solid. I was seriously worried for Kaidance. And then it all changed.

I read on. I did. In fact, I made it 55% of the way through the book before I had to put it down. Unfortunately, enough threads and pieces didn't line up for my liking. Not saying other people won't love this book, but I just didn't.

Content warning: Themes of abuse, rape, etc. Lots of language.

Kaidance has spent her life trying to hide her curse, she can see a person's death when she touches them. When she was small, she tried to save her brother from the death she had foreseen, but no one believed her and they thought she actually caused the death. Since then she has been living at the Juvenile Delinquent Reform Institution. What she doesn't know is that The Fates gave her this power and there is someone who will stop at nothing to use her power.

Great Story!💜

This is going to be a great series. I love this storyline and all the amazing characters.
This is my first book with this narrator and I loved her. Great job on so many different characters.
This is book 1 and continues on into the next book.
If you don’t mind cliffhangers I recommend this book/series!

The Scarlet Thread had great potential. I really enjoyed the first part of the book, the prologue had me hooked. I super love Greek Mythology and this seemed like a good twist on it. Until I got further into the book.
I can't really tell you much about the plot besides Zeus wants to kill Kai (barely could remember her name) and that Able wants to protect her, not for her sake but his own and I guess the 'heirs' fate. The mythology bending in this gets sorta confusing but kind of works itself out? I'm still kind of uncertain, maybe if I read the second book I will skim through this one again.
The Scarlet Thread was super short, I read it probably two hours or less. It was a super fast read, it flowed nicely but again, not much plot or should I say not a solid plot. It felt super wishy washy. There wasn't much besides the fact that they were trying to keep her safe from Zeus and his Hunters cause she was chosen but the Fates.
I wanted to like the characters, I swear, but absolutely none of them stood out, not even the protagonist stood out. And I didn't see like any romance. None. Zip.
"The Scarlet Thread is a dark fantasy for fans of Greek mythology and Gothic romance. "
From the summary in GoodReads, I honestly didn't see much romance. Maybe the start of one? The only person I could see that she was starting a relationship with was Sitri, but even then it was kind of iffy. Kai even referred to Sitri as a really good friend. I could maybe see her going for Puriel. This is probably gonna evolve into a love triangle of rival species kind of thing.
I will admit though, the ending cliffhanger was enough to actually make me want to read the second book, and as fast and flowing as The Scarlet Thread was I am seriously considering just reading the second one to find out what happens. I've done it for longer and worse series.
Another positive is it did have nice writing and I mean the idea of the book itself was good, and the book wasn't bad . It just felt extremely lacking.

Ugh, killing me here. The story was interesting, then captivating, and then it ended. :( But I signed up for the newsletter, so I'll get the rest of the story as soon as he writes it, but man, talk about ripping your heart out.

Kaidance is in juvenile detention for killing her brother, except she tried desperately to prevent his death after she saw it. Problem is, no one believed her. Then, one day she sneaks off with her friend to a party, gets bored and then creeped out by some guy with gold eyes who's staring at her, and after a brief and confusing encounter, returns to the facility. But when she gets thrown in solitary confinement, she hears the voice of the golden-eyed guy again, and wakes to find herself in an impossible situation that quickly leads to her escape, and into an adventure she never could have imagined. Let's just suffice to say there's a lot of weird stuff going on at the mansion of the gods, and Kaidance finds herself in the middle of an ancient war.

It definitely starts out rather dark, but once the real adventure begins, the story picks up momentum, and lightens up ever so slightly. I found the characters interesting, and the setting (the later one) just fascinating. The story drops off in the midst of a heart-pounding scene, and that was a little shocking, but fingers crossed the author finishes the book soon, because I'm dying to know what happens next.

This is the first book I've read from D.S. Murphy but now I have some other ones on my to-read-list as well. It's a pity this was only part 1 of the story but at least there's something to look forward to. I'm really looking forward to part 2!

The story was captivating as well as quick and easy to read. Once I started I just wanted to keep going.

I loved Kaidance as a character. She has a strong personality and despite all that she's gone through and the fear she carries within her, she has found a way to survive in her present environment. I also love her dressing style. Especially love the Lego necklace and what it represents. Her character is well thought out and I think her fate is quite realistic considering what would happen if somebody in real life started acting the way Kaidance is acting and foretelling other people's deaths. I love all things mental health so to find out that the story takes place in an institution (at least in the beginning) was an additional plus. The other characters are interesting as well but I'd like to learn more about their background and history. That might offer some insight to some of their actions.

The story is an intriguing combination of mythology and romance in the modern day setting and with some dark twists. I'd recommend it to anyone who's into fantasy and paranormal fiction with a touch of romance.

Thankfully this was just a throwaway kindle unlimited book I read to pass the time. That said, there really needs to be an option to give less than one star to a book.

This was honestly painful to read but because I am a masochist 😫 I can RARELY, if ever, leave a book unfinished. So I powered through while glazing over paragraph after paragraph of thinly forced arguments about good vs evil , the man upstairs vs the man downstairs yada yada yada. It was all rubbish (I'm not even from across the pond but it's the only word that seemed to fit *shrugs*)

Look I'm down for a Mythology based story any day of the week but this was incredibly cluttered and frankly *snaps fingers* what's her face *ugh* I can't even be bothered to remember her name right now! Yea HER. She bored the hell out of me. So yawn, goodnight, I shall not be continuing to follow the golden threads wherever they may fatefully lead.

Good luck to those of you who do.
