Rate this book

One of Tournier's harder books to digest, but also one of his most comprehensive. Nowhere else in his writings does his understanding of the intersection between science and religion become more clear. Well worth the effort to read!

Delighted to have found this seventy year old book by one of my favourite authors. Originally written in French, most of the references are from French language sources, and of course, older than seventy years. I am grateful to have enjoyed a book which has not come from the Anglosphere.

Although this book was written in another time and place, the themes are universal. The contemporary reader can identity with many of the issues addressed by Tournier in his account of the problems faced by his patients and how he treats them. He acknowledges the importance of medicine but also stresses the nature of the doctor-patient relationship. His approach is rigorously informed by Biblical references.
