Den usynlige lesbiske

Rate this book

Océanerosemarie's tale mostly looks at the highs and lows of being a lesbian in 21st century France with some wry humour. Unfortunately, it is Sandrine Revel's art that is the best thing about this book, and it's worth reading just to look at it! 7 out of 12, Three Star read.

Well, this was kind of a bizarre read to be honest. I found this comic at the library and was pulled in by the title, because it's kind of funny, and by the art style, which is also pretty fun to look at. I do think it was kind of a weird choice not to use the same art style on the cover as is in the book, it kind of reminds me of something they used to use for Barbie comics and stuff.

Also, and I mean no disrespect by saying this, but you can definitely tell this is French. Like even if you skip over the references to French music, author and street names, the whole attitude and atmosphere feels French.

A hilarious story about being a lesbian in France. I say that, because there are definitely some very French things about the story, including the relationships between the genders and the way the author chooses to discuss them, which may come across as a bit un-PC for the American audience (but perhaps more honest in some ways.) There are a lot of moments that are universal though, especially regarding women's experiences and queer women's experiences. The art is beautiful with lush colors and great facial expressions. I would have liked to see whatever happened with the dolphin lady and how and when the main character started doing burlesque. Recommended for those who like karaoke, camping, Le Petit Robert (the dictionary), Super Mario and nuns.

This French graphic novel by Océane Rose Marie (Océanerosemarie is her pen name) was originally published by Delcourt in 2013 and is now available in English through Comixology. The story revolves around Océanerosemarie who considers herself an "invisible lesbian" and her journey from childhood to adulthood. As a reader, we follow the problems and insecurities that come with growing up as a lesbian.

The Invisible Lesbian is a book for mature readers with lots of humour and an interesting and engaging plot. Sandrine Revel's art is absolutely beautiful. Her watercolour paintings fit the tone of the story perfectly.

I was laughing out loud a few times while reading, especially whenever the lesbian fairy was called for. Nevertheless, there were some serious issues in the story that bothered me.

More than once, Océanerosemarie points out, how a "real lesbian" is/should be/can't be. Although the book seems to make fun of these lesbian stereotypes in the beginning of the story, the further it goes on, the more those stereotypes are reinforced. There are also problems concerning gender stereotypes and demeaning commentary concerning people of other sexual orientation.

On the other hand, Océanerosemarie's feminist remarks concerning heterosexual men's interest in lesbians, and lesbian sex, are quite interesting and not too far fetched from what women experience nearly every day.

The Invisible Lesbian ended on a rather depressing notion - which threw me off a bit as it wasn't at all what the rest of the book felt like. All in all, while I had some issues with this graphic novel, it was still a very interesting and fun read.

It’s SO French. It’s like Madeline and Monet had a baby and it was an indie comic about lesbians. It’s ok!

Two stars, it was ok.

Den usynlige lesbiske (as I read it) is a graphic memoir about the author's struggle with accepting her lesbianism - and then, mostly, her trials & tribulations in lesbian relationships.
It reads like illustrated freeform thoughts about her process of growing up.
The art style's cute, I'll give it that, and there's a handful of clever panels. Probably, some of the feelings locked in here will strike a chord.
As tolerable as it was, at the end of the day, I don't think I got much out of this.
Besides, as a narrative (not a memoir), I feel like there were tangential relationships described for the sake of three pages of the author's feelings on the sex she had.
But maybe it's a French thing.

girl is putting a lot of effort to prove herself as a legit lesbian. she can't blend in with the gays that well because her looks and vibes were very hetero. more than half of the narrative was her struggling with how to 'lesbian'. i also can see the timeline as it presents the shows that influenced her life choices *cough*Lword*cough* and throw away the only decent relationship she had to be like um.. Shane. idk, maybe if her being single is her fault or she's just unlucky. my homegirl all over the place. I wish her luck in her future endeavors.

2 stars. art is cute tho.

This was an interesting coming of age story about a young lesbian struggling to find a place for her self in the world. We follow her through the early days of her sexual awakening to her struggles with how the world perceives Lesbians. A bittersweet read.

Funny to read and the art is very beautiful. I read it in english but I KNEW it was french comics by the style and french references. Loved it!

4 stars just because I didn't really like how the author ended it, too abrupt.

Really blew me away. Humor is so hard to get right in this format and this book nailed it. The writing and artwork were perfectly in sync. This is a new favorite of mine, disappointing to see that the rating for this book isn't where it should be.

Disappointing,
As if it was made by someone who doesn’t know what they’re talking about. Very cliche and the first part about childhood is disturbing.
