A dark epic fantasy series, where one woman's thirst for revenge will put the entire world in jeopardy.
The only thing twenty-one year old Adrastine wants is revenge against her depraved father—but when she tries to kill him, she is caught and thrown into a holy war for a god she doesn’t believe in. But disaster is coming, and all Adrastine’s problems will seem minor by comparison. Someone, or something, is draining the planet’s lifeblood, killing the land and everything on it at an alarming rate.
Jacob is a shelon, a man who can wield magic, and a spy dispatched by Queen Valtice to find The Rose of Nerine – the only one who can stop the rape of the land and save the people. But when Jacob finds Adrastine, he can’t convince her that she is The Rose, let alone to leave her home and journey with him across the tempestuous sea to Nerine.
Adrastine is drawn to Jacob, despite their differences. But that is a dangerous path, as he is an unwelcome distraction to her quest for revenge. And if she learns his secrets, it will cement her hatred of men forever, weakening powers she is only just learning she has, powers needed to save their world.

Tempering the Rose The Rose of Nerine #1 By Dionne Lister
Having escaped her father's (Radnok) abuse & her addict mother's indifference to it at 16 Lucky for Addy that she was able to escaped her father's (Radnok) abuse & her addict mother's indifference at the age of 16.. Now that Addy is 21, she has one goal: to kill the man who has made her life a living nightmare. The biggest hitch in this plan is that this man happens to be her father & leader of the king’s Royal Seeker Network. Abby has been planning revenge since she was 14. She has attempted to kill Radnok few times, but was unable to complete her mission If you are looking for book with lots of fighting with gory killing & blood - This is book for you
Oh & can’t forget there were so many names to remember that the Author put glossary of names at the end of the book
All & all this book didn't really grab me like I wanted it to. It started off great but then my interest just sort of dwindled. Keep in mind this is only my opinion- you may read the book & completely enjoy the book without any flaws

This was freaking amazing and I'm definitely waiting to read book 2. This was just so phenomenal. From the writing to the world and to the characters. All simply amazing. I loved the various POV's and how well they meshed and formed such a cohesive story. Dionne Lister is seriously amazing.
Adrastine aka Addy was a kick ass character for me. I loved everything about her from beginning to end. She was bold, spunky, had great killer instincts, but still was a shy little girl. Everything she went through in her life by the hands of her father was insane. Learning that she's a shelon was even crazier. Learning who she really was kept me wanting to read more. I'm looking forward to seeing her fully embrace who she is and saving the world.
Radnok is the most vile man I've ever known. His brother Smarnus as well. I can't believe how twisted and power hungry these two are. I didn't care for how Radnok treated his wife and daughter -- let alone young girls in general. I did like that Smarnus was gay. It definitely added some diversity to the story a bit. However, both brothers are foul men and both need to die horrible deaths in my opinion.
Lilliana was a horrible mother in my eyes when it came to Addy, but as the story progressed I learned that it wasn't her fault, but her husband's Radnok. I love how she went from doubting and self hating to finally snapping out of it in the end. I wish she would have snapped out of it earlier, but better late than never. She seems to be very powerful so I can't wait to see her in action.
Kerwyn was amazing. I love how he always tried to do what was right. Finding out who he was amazed. Good things truly happen to those you least expect. Jacob was awesome. I love him and I hope that he and Addy work out. The two of these guys being the prophecy is simply awesome. Can't wait to see how it all plays out.
The magic in this world seemed pretty well developed, but I hope to see more magic in the sequel. I hope things workout between Jacob and Addy romance wise. They would be cute. The ending was seriously perfect I'm ready for the sequel!
I can’t even begin to say enough good things about this book. To put it mildly, I loved it. The only thing I didn’t love about the book was the ending. And the only reason that I didn’t love the ending was because that meant the book was over and I didn’t have any more to read. There had better be a sequel to this story, and I’d better be able to get my hands on it soon, because I can’t just go on living my life without knowing what happens to Addy and the others!
A brief summary: Addy has run away from her abusive father and is on a mission to kill him. Her first attempt fails, but it does allow her to join forces with a few rebel “seekers” (a kind of special group of men working for her father, whom she later learns all come from a certain race that Addy has always been brought up to despise). Thanks to her new, surprisingly dependable allies, Addy begins to learn that she herself could be the key to a prophesy that could save the world.
Just a warning to squeamish readers: there is lots of fighting and killing and blood and gore and all kinds of delicious disgusting-ness. Personally, I love this kind of stuff, but I figure some people might not like it, so I should put this warning in here. Otherwise, if you like fighting and revenge and strong female characters, please read this book and be as captivated as I was!
I am slightly interested to see what happens in the end so I would probably go back to it sometime later but not this year. I know that no one is supposed to be strong from the beginning but Addy is considered a good fighter, she tries to kill her father after all but soon she fails and shows too much prejudice and weaknesses that I couldn't cope with and I caught myself skipping parts even from the beginning.
As much potential as this book has, it has way too many POVs and I hate so many POVs even in 3rd person. They show too much of the plot and leave close to no mystery so I am pretty sure I'd get all of the book by reading 2 chapters- the middle and the last one. I don't like such books and even though the idea is interesting, it's not presented in a good enough way.
I received this copy in exchange of an honest review
Having escaped her father's (Radnok) abuse and her addict mother's indifference to it at 16, the now 21 year old Addy (Adrastine) plots revenge, as she has done since age 14, at the pointy end of an arrow. Fired from her bow she would have it strike Radnok's heart, leader of the king’s Royal Seeker Network; retribution for her abusive upbringing. Justice, if it were to occur, sees the plan unfolding at the front door to the Love ’n Ale whorehouse, testament to not only her father's abuse but also his adultery.
That Addy would rather die, or run to try another day, than fail, signifies the strength of her hatred. The hatred which cloys at her soul and overpowers any other plans for her life, empowers but also restricts her life; for although it is earnt it shapes her ability to accept all else happening around her. Although she does project a hard shell and the mannerisms she likens to men, at heart Addy is a soft and gentle young woman, despite the repeated attrocities enacted on her body by the sadist she believes is her father; a father lying to his king, to her and to his soldiers regarding his origin as an enemy of Treloah.
That a deserter from the seekers, Kerwyn the Coward, having seen the evil that rules the Royal Seeker's heart, would be present to witness her Sherlon ("heathen magic user") aura give her away, is perhaps an omen of fate. Unknown to Addy and most of Treloah, she is The Rose of Nerine; the basis of an Ephrestine prophecy, a saviour and weapon against a great evil working through the ambitions of a few cruel men seeking to rule all the provinces. Whilst Addy's arrow strikes true, it was not the heart intended. The grief arising from Kerwyn's witness of Addy's failure, a mistake which killed one of his few true friends, leads to Kerwyn's capture after four years on the run.
Whilst Kerwyn had initially planned to help Addy avoid capture, failure instead leads to both their captures. A poetic justice of sorts indeed occurs, but not the kind that was intended; a deserter and a murderer captured through one missed outcome. As they broach the topic of her aura, whilst incarcerated and pending punishment, Kerwyn's confirmation that she not only has an aura, one hitherto unseen, Addy's dismay deepens as she realises this apparent vagrant knows more than she. Hints in the subtext appear to insuate that a necklace, gifted to her by her mother at age 11, may have been involved in masking her until she ceased wearing it.
A dogmatic and autocratic adherence to religious beliefs herein, that paints races capable of magic as evil rings clearly, through the passages of dialogue and narration. Even for Addy, who believes she would likely behave similarly if placed in the oppressed's shoes, acceptance of her heritage as a Sherlon is grossly resisted. That she would be The Rose needed by the Nerines and the rest of her known world is unfathomable and beyond comprehension. Her belief and acceptance will be necessary though, if she is to succeed in her destiny.
Meanwhile, in Nerine itself, a growing blight of prophecy has arrived. Nerine's queen (Valtice) witnesses it's destruction, evidenced in the dying land, the syphening of life from everything in contact with affected ground. Just as this great plague on life was prophesied, so to the weapon to combat it - Addy: The Rose of Nerine - and so the search for her must quicken before the ravage grows beyond repair. That the blight might be part of something much greater, is unveiled through the semi-insane ramblings of Radnok's and his brother's mind.
With alternating points-of-view adding to the drama and perceptively increasing the pace of the story, events are quite fluid; it feels as though knowledge is being delivered every other paragraph. Blunt phrasing, a choice selection of words and their resulting imagery further add to the appeal: it would take readers completely unsuited to the myriad genres herein to be in any way disappointed with the delivery of the story. Many characters leave an impression, with the protagonists, good, evil or otherwise, leaving a memorable mark.
Through an economy of delivered words Dionne is clearly a well practiced author who avoids wasting words. A broad storyline with events happening far and wide: Addy is the ring, Mordor is the two brothers seeking ultimate power and control of her, and middle earth is Venturan - where events unfold. Both entertaining and captivating, Tempering the Rose is an enjoyment to read, readers will undoubtedly be looking forward to subsequent books in the series.

Tempering the Rose by Dionne Lister is Book 1 of the Rose of Nerine. In this book we are introduced to Abby right from the get go who is looking to revenge herself on her father for all that he has done to her before she ran away. She is waiting for him on a rooftop to kill him from a distance but regrettably not only does she fail but she takes the life of an innocent in the process. In this situation we are also introduced to another character who will become another of the main characters in this story - Kerwyn who was a member of the Seekers for the King and Radnok but he quit because he just couldn't do the job that was required of him. Abby is captured and taken to the palace where Radnok has plans to renew the torture and abuse that he had done to her in the past but with the help of Jacob, another Seeker but who is also a Spy, and Kerwyn she is able to escape. Abby's desire is to kill Radnok but she will have to wait in order to attempt such a thing again.
This is the first book that I have read by this author and Dionne Lister has done a really good job making an engaging read that just really grabs you and makes you want to turn the page to find out what happens next. While I really enjoyed this book overall there are some elements to this book that in my opinion make it a bit...inappropriate for a YA novel being - the sex and also the sex with young children. I think that pushes this book a bit more into an adult range or 17-18 year old YA range. Not really something for a younger YA reader. There are some issues I have with the characters of where Abby comes off as rude a bit a childish at time but all in all I think that it ends up adding to the believability of some of the characters and the story as a whole as the author seeks to make them as human like as possible. This story leaves you with an ending that leaves you wanting to know what will happen next. It's a bit of a sudden ending but honestly if you're watching the pages or percentage (if reading by Kindle) then you'll honestly see it coming. All in all I really enjoyed this book and look forward to reading the next book especially since the author has left us with much to look forward to - Radnok declaring himself King, danger coming that threatens all and whether Abby and her friends will be able to stop any of it all. I give this book 2 thumbs up and 5 stars.
What a wonderful story. I loved this story even though there were a few dark things. But saying that it had a great flow and I just could not put the book down. I am so ready to read the next one now.
This story is about the Rose of Nerine, or rather Adrastine(Addy) no one knows who this person is going to be. Not even Addy herself. I felt so bad for her and wanted to rip her so called father to shreds for the things he had done to her. I had to stop at one point where we find out part of her reason for wanting him dead. She has to men that have been sent in her path to gide her. Kerwyn is one of my favorite characters however Jacob is not bad either. Jacob has made a promise to protect her, but in the society they all live in, women are not tread as equals. So Addy has had a few issues with dealing with men. She learned at a early age to only count on herself. So no matter how hard he tries to show her he is not like them, she still does not trust him. Kerwyn is a different he is referred to as the deserter, but he had a good reason for leaving the service of Addy’s father. When it all comes down to it he is a good and noble man and a perfect father figure for Addy. But wait till you find out a secret not even he knows. And will Addy fall for Jacob and let a good man love her, the way she deserves. And then there is the prophecy to deal with too. And what she will have to do to save the world.
Now before I ruin this for you I will leave off here. I hope you enjoy this book as much as I did. If you do like this book, please consider leaving a review. The Authors really like it when you do; they value your opinions too.
For years Adrastine (Addy) has had to endure her father's abuse and torment. Now, as an adult, all she wants to do is to eliminate him from this world. However, when a shelon, Jacob, comes into her life, she is suddenly thrown into a new world. A world where her role could potentially be bigger than she could have ever imagined.
Written in alternating perspectives, I really enjoyed this dark fantasy read. Addy is a strong and likable character whose past takes a toll of who she has become. The plot is action-filled and barely lets the reader take a break from its intensity.
Even with its confusing lingo (shelon, Var, etc.), the story itself is easy enough to follow. I did notice a glossary of new words at the end of the book that can be helpful to future readers. There are themes of trust, relationships, self-acceptance, and bravery woven in this well-crafted read. The author definitely gives the reader more to look forward to next in the series.
I highly recommend this read to those who enjoy dark fantasies with a creative plot. As a warning, there are several scenes of abuse and killing that those who do not enjoy much gore in their reads, might want to pass on this one. If it doesn't bother you, enjoy!
I received a free copy of this book from the JGBS Review Library in exchange for my honest review. My opinions are my own and no compensation was received.
I loved this book by Dionne Lister, This is the first book I've read from her collection and I was captivated from the start. I fell in love with Addy as she set herself for revenge and failed. As her journey continues Addy finds herself partnering with two characters she never expected to meet. As secrets are revealed and she reluctantly finds herself thrust into an unexpected partnership she finally makes a pact to join with them. Utmost in her mind is revenge and she must make a deal to in order to get what she desires. The death of her father. As the story continues we discover Addy's history and those of her companions and the three set off on a journey to not only kill her father but rescue a family and hopefully save the world from the inevitable war coming their way to destroy the world. A fabulous tale that will have you wrapped in suspense as Addy discovers who she really is. A journey not to be missed. Dionne you are my new go to author and I can't wait until the sequel is out! Fabulous read highly recommended to fantasy fans.
This is the first book I have not been able to really push through and finish. It has some good fantasy elements and is on a good track to try and build a more complex world, but something about it just failed to draw me in and the overall tone was off-putting for me. I just felt like the story was delving into the mythology too quickly and developing everything too little for what was supposed to be an "epic" fantasy. It's not that the book was necessarily bad, there was plenty it it that I think many other readers would enjoy and I still encourage others to give it a try.

Excellent read! I really enjoy this epic dark fantasy novel! With a mix of revenge, magic, and a bit of a love story, the author kept me glued to the story. Addy, who was abused by her father at 15, at the age of 21, returns to seek her revenge. I really enjoyed the character because she was real and a mixture of many characteristics and actually reminded me of someone I used know.
I don't want to say too much because I don't want to write any spoilers. I did find the book to be well written, well paced, and intriguing. I look forward to the next book in the series, and I should add that my wife is now 48% through the read and is really enjoying it as well.
I've been wanting to read something by Dionne for ages, but I admit I haven't had time. Until she released Tempering the rose. I knew I had to try it. And I don't regret a single moment. This book has everything I love in a true fantasy book, apart from the horrible gross bits and the darkness. It all adds to the characters' story and their growth. Well written, this book makes me envious. I wish I had created a world this rich and exciting. Can't wait for book 2!
Action packed. Finding out you may not be the person you thought you were. You have powers you didn't know you had. Facing your tormentor. All these things happened to Addy.
With the help of Jacob and Kerwyn, she tries to kill her tormentor. She fails for the time being. She finds out that Jacob has lied by omission.
Can't wait for the next book to find out how this story ends.
A beautifully unique fantasy that wraps you up in its world and its amazing characters. The story never had any slow points, and kept you thoroughly invested throughout the entire read. Highly recommend!
Never read anything by this author before, but I absolutely loved the book. Couldn't put it down (but when I had to for work I kept thinking about it!) I can't wait for book 2, hope it's not too long of a wait!
I received a free copy via Netgalley in exchange for a honest review. I found this a difficult book to get into but after persevering it was well worth it and very enjoyable.
Adrastine has had a harsh upbringing, and she will have revenge against the man that tormented her - her father. Only there is something bigger coming, as prophecies come to light.
I received a free copy from Netgalley. This was kinda meh. It is well-written, but I just couldn't get into it.
It quickly sets Addy up as a determined young woman, an efficient killer, and a deep distrust of men after being abused by her father for years. She now is driven to kill her father, for revenge, and so he can't hurt anyone else. The trouble is, Addy's father Radnok, is the head of the Seekers - a group of highly-trained killers, whose job is to hunt those with magic. Radnok is obsessed with power, and his group of Seekers is corrupt; accusing and punishing anyone that stands in their way. Addy's path is complicated when Jacob turns up and professes that she is the key to a prophecy about his homeland. That even though she was raised to be a magic-hater, she would have special powers.
Addy was... I wanted her to be a tough, independent heroine; but she's a whiny, selfish brat. Despite the fact that she's in her twenties, and a trained and professional killer; she seems incapable of taking care of herself. She's immature, sticks her head in the sand, blocks out every view and opinion that doesn't agree with hers. Addy is completely against men - and with good reason with her history. But she spends most of the time musing about Jacob. What it would be like to kiss him; to have sex with him; how his top shows off his muscles... Fair enough, there's a love interest; but I felt that Addy had a split personality between her girly thoughts about Jacob; and her bruised and distrusting self. The two parts didn't gel.
Jacob is... a love interest. He's a shelon (magic-user); and smart enough to work undercover for her father and the Seekers. He's a fairly considerate person, and a nice enough character. There was nothing about him that particularly stood out.
The plot. OK, let me say that I tried to come back to this book several times, hoping I could push through and get to the good stuff. It's a relatively short book, only about 230 pages, so surely I could do it? I gave up when I realised I was only halfway through. So far, there have been some dead fields in Nerine; Smarnus has claimed the throne of Lachmond; Addy had a scrap with her father's men and then holed up in a church with Jacob. Not really epic. Oh crikey - Smarnus the Smarmy. He happens to be Radnok's "crazy" brother. Which is pretty evident when the guy kills the king of Lachmond in the middle of a crowded court, and claims the crown. During the half that I read, Lachmond has little respect for outsiders and refuses to connect with foreigners. BUT Smarnus (from Treloah) ingratiates himself with the Lachmond court, and after he kills the king, the rest of Lachmond obey him. Because reasons.
I don't think I'll be following the rest of this series.
I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Tempering Rose is a story about a young woman who is plagued with a strong distrust of men, due to the abusive relationship she had with Radnok, her father that she endured growing up. Having been raised as she was, under the iron clad rule and fist of her abusive father, Addy understandably develops a desire to rid the world of the man, but life (and perhaps fate) has different plans for her. She is revealed, much to her revulsion and disbelief, that she is a Shelon, one that is capable of wielding magic, and a quite important one at that, who is to play an integral part in saving the world. Who doesn't love a good ole story of good versus evil, however disbelieving the heroine might be.
Following Addy on her journey with Jacob, a seeker who helped save her after being caught by her father was quite the ride. We see her struggle with letting down her guard around Jacob, due to him being a man. Her distrust of the opposite sex is so strong that Addy constantly seems like she sees men in general as guilty until proven innocent, even if they help save her life. It makes for some awkward and uncomfortable interactions between the two travelers, even though Jacob does nothing but be helpful from the get go. One could argue that Addy 'so distrust is warranted given how often she was used, abused and manipulated by men. Still, to hold everyone to the same standard is a bit unfair, but I think that the past she suffered through awarded her slack.
The further into the story I got, the more I came to respect Addy, and how she continued to plow forward, refusing to give in. Even if her sole reason for pushing on was revenge, her determination and drive is nearly unmatched by any of the other characters, and that's saying something. What, with Radnok's desire for power/domination, Jacob's desire to save the world, and Kerwyn's desire to reunite with his family, topping those desires is quite a feat, and it goes to show just how much she wants her father dead. And her rage and quest for revenge is justified, at least in my opinion; no one should ever have to endure what Addy did, and the scars she carries (be they mental, physical or emotional) will be with her for probably her whole life, but she continues to move forward. Seeing her journey with Jacob and their trusty friend, watching her progress in her attitude towards, however small that progress may be, was a sight to see.
A rich world boasting engaging and complex characters, Tempering the Rose was a great start what I'm sure will be an epic...well epic fantasy series. With all the revelations that went down in this book, I can't wait to see what's next for these characters. Till next time, stay golden Ponyboy!
A good adventurous read that alternates between a few different point of views. A bit graphic - but understandably so. The ending does leave off in a pretty big cliffhanger.
Adrastine, or Addy for short, is a 21 year old independent woman with a troubled past whose main goal in life is destroy the one man who ripped away her childhood in very horrid ways. When she first fails at this mission she winds up meeting two men who end up helping her, as long as she helps them to fulfill the prophecy which they believe she is the key of. This is their story of trying to save their land while still completing Addy's original mission to kill her father.. without falling for a guy who seems to keep things hidden from her.
I do wish Addy acted a bit more mature, there were times she acted very childish for a 21 year old. Also some of the wording didn't seem to quite fit the time period but all in all a decent read.
I really enjoyed this book, and the writing style of this author. For the most part, the characters were really well written, and the rather easy to believe. I was not too sure what to think of the heroine though. She was really strong and well thought out one minute then the next minute she was rather whiny. I thought at some points she was a really good heroine, and then shed say or think something that left me wondering if it was the same person. As for the rest of the characters and world, very well done. Even the villain was well thought out and planned! LOVE the ending and hope for many more by this author.
BIG-ASS DISCLAIMER: I can't rate something I've edited but I really enjoyed working with Dionne on this novel – so good to see a strong female lead in a fantasy setting and looking forward to seeing where the author will take this epic. The main character is strong-willed and somewhat prickly in personality, but her heart is in the right place despite the harrowing past she's endured.
This is a strong adult fantasy with interesting and complex characters, well-drawn. I especially like Addy and Kerwyn, with their painful pasts. I also found Queen Valtice to be an interesting Queen and yearned to hear more from her viewpoint. Be warned: this novel ends on a gripping cliff hanger and the author is currently beavering away at the next book. If you are a fan of dark fantasy with a strong female protagonist, this book and series could be for you.
This book was a DNF for me, hence the lack of a star rating here on Goodreads (though for the portion I finished I am inclined to give it 1.5 or 2 stars) as I don't think it's fair to rate a book that I only read 40% of. That said, I will state my reasons for putting the book down, on the chance that they are helpful to other potential readers.
I found the main character to be act more like a petulant child than a woman bent on revenge for good reason. Certainly Addy has excellent reasons to feel a profound wish for revenge against Radnock, and a general distrust of men. However, she is incredibly inconsistent and unreasonable in her reactions to the actions and words of others. She demonstrates little to no emotional intelligence and low amounts of practicality and reasoning as well. By the 40% mark in the book I could no longer take her shortsightedness and lack of insight. I failed to connect with her in anyway. (I also found her attraction to the male lead to be incredibly difficult to believe as she has been subjected to terrible childhood trauma, and still has a well founded hatred and suspicion of men, but that seems to melt away periodically, simply because Jacob has dreamy eyes, even before she knows anything about him as a person.)
In the meantime, I liked the overall premise of the book, and found the larger plot arc intriguing, which is why I continued to read for as long as I did. I really wanted to come around to liking Addy and consequently the whole book. Unfortunately, my inability to connect with or feel for the main character, combined with her erratic behavior, eventually overthrew my desire to find out what happens next.
I do think that Addy's inconsistent and incongruous personality could possibly be fixed with a solid round of developmental editing, and I would be inclined to read the book if that were to happen. However, it could be that the author's portrayal of Addy is intentional, and it is simply a case of me not identifying with this particular character. Either way, I was unable to finish the book in it's current state.
As to formatting and editing, the formatting isn't terrible, but the paragraph indents are double what they should be, and there were enough typos for me to be mildly distracted. The cover is lovely though. I love the image. I commend the author on coming up with a solid premise, and interesting secondary characters.
I hope this review is helpful to others in determining whether or not they wish to read the book.
*I received an advance reader copy of this book via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.*
This book was provided by the publisher via NetGallery for an exhange for my honest review.
Where should I start? It is difficult to review this book because:
1) Addy. I didn't connect with her, failed to feel for her. Why? Kerwyn said what I think about her: "... There is nothing smart about being rude". She is extremely rude and childish. She says a lot of things to offend people on purpose. Yes, she went trough some horrible things in her childhood, and she needs a professional help to get over it because to live only to kill that person isn't right. She tried to do it ones but failed, and she will try it again ( by the way, why is it that she can kill without thinking dozens of people but not the disturber). I liked nothing about main character.
2) Jacob. Well, If you need someone to help you than why don't you talk to that person? I don't know, maybe try to explaine why and how, and who are you really, after all. More over, he is just as immature as Addy. I wanted to like him but at the very moment in the castle instead of concentrating on the fight he flirted with Addy. I have nothing good to say about him.
3) Radnok. Some may think he is just a villain. No, he is mentally ill. Such people are dangerous for any society and he should be forced to receive psychiatric treatment. I felt sick reading chapters about him. Everyting so wrong with him.
4) The plot of the book. It did have a potential at the beginning but by 30% of the book you will feel disappointed. Therefore, I had difficulties to finish the book. Even if the author ment to write fast paced book it didn't help due to tedious dialogues.
Now, I want to talk about the only one character that I really liked - Kerwyn. He made some mistakes but he ownes to it and he is trying to atone best he can, to make things right. He is genuinely trying to make the world a better place. He has big loving family and he loves them a lot. The way he cares about his family wasn't right (to stay away from love ones is never a good decision) but he found strength and determination to save them. I was worry if his family was alright. Kerwyn and his story is the only right real beautiful thing about this book that made me finish it.
Overall, this book is not my cup of tea. I don't enjoy childish rude MC with so much secrecy is going on. I just wish there will be a psychiatrist in next book to help few MC with their mental disorders.
Young Adrastine wants revenge against her evil father. She tries to kill him, which is not easy and she finds herself in the middle of a Holy War. Soon she learns that something is draining the planets lifeblood, killing everyone and everything, this must be stopped. Will she be able to do what she feels she must?
Then, she meets Jacob, who is a Sheldon (a man who can use magic) and a spy for the Queen, Valtrice. His mission is to find The Rose of Nerine. This is the only way to save the land and its people. He tries to convince Adrastine that she is "The Rose", which is not an easy task. Together the two must team up to save their people and home.
A truly fantastic dark Fantasy. I really Like Adrastine, a bit stubborn, but wants to do what is right. I also liked Jacob, he as well is determined to do his job, and convince Adrastine of who she truly is. She is drawn to him (Jacob), but if she discovers his past, this may change her forever.
The story is original, with vivid detail and rich dialog. There is plenty of action, drama, thrills and compelling thought provoking moments. I was drawn in from the first page, completely hooked. I found myself eager to absorb more of this engrossing story. A true page turner and definite five star read. I highly recommend Tempering the Rose to those who love a great Dark Epic Fantasy, a must read.
I've read quite a few of Dionne Lister's books, but this is the first of her fantasy books that I have read. Dark fantasy to be precise. I'm a fantasy lover and how did I manage to overlook this brilliant book? From the outset Tempering The Rose is full on action and fast paced. It took me a bit to get used to all the names and what was happening, it was slight confusing, but that soon dissipated. From than on I was drawn into the book and couldn't wait to find out more. A very complex, but fascinating storyline which has been developed with great detail. The many important characters to the heart of the story are extremely well developed and with each page another layer shows. Fantasy at its best! I really cannot wait for book 2, which is currently being writen!
*** I received a copy of this book in exchange for my unbiased review of it. The opinions stated are solely my own and no one else's. ***
This book was difficult to pick up at first. The characters become fleshed out as the story progresses instead of just being introduced which I prefer instead. We enter into Abby trying to take revenge for her abusive father and absentee mother. And although they were short chapters it took a few before the story moved forward in my opinion. It reminds me of Tamora Pierce where all of her characters were doing things and until they came together it was a little all over the place. If I were to go about revenge and fail the first time like Abby though, I feel like she got the help she needed to move on and still be able to get things settled for her which makes her character nice and real for me since she is so human if not childish at times.
In the end I did actually like it even with the all over the place. The ending was a little cut off but it made way for a second book which I will probably be picking up soon
A few of the things I enjoyed abou the book were the main characters. Adrastine, Jacob and Kerwyn were the main protagonist where as Radnok, an a few minor characters were the main antagonists. Each of the characters personalities were very well developed which allowed me to enjoy the book even more. Another enjoyable component of the book was the setting. I liked how there was a sense of adventure in the book when Adrastine and her friends were traveling between cities which gave the book a slight sense of urgency making it suspenseful. The author also included various point of view for. The different characters which allowed me to understand them in a way that I wouldn't have been able to otherwise. Overall I truly enjoyed the book and it left me wishing for a whole series following the first.
