I'm the author of the Nightingale novels, a series of stories set in an East End hospital in the 1930s, published by Arrow. The first in the series, The Nightingale Girls, follows the lives of three girls from very different backgrounds as they join the Nightingale Hospital as students. The second, The Nightingale Sisters, will be published next spring. I'm originally from London, but I now live in the beautiful city of York.
Another juicy episode in the melodramatic soap opera that is... "the Nightingale". :) Pure brain candy. There's happy moments, heart wrenching moments, "Oh no you didn't" moments, "Turn around!" moments..."Nooooooo!" moments...*sigh* I love this.
"Nightingale Nurses" is probably the most exciting book so far in the Nightingale series. The Blackshirt uprisings are well under way and Dora's brother has joined them. But no one can predict the far reaching consequences of those itching for change.
And Dora and Nick...Nick is now married to Ruby (through her scheming but its his own fault) and while his heart still belongs to Dora, he must be a man and make the best of a bad situation in his new life with Ruby. But when Nick's mentally disabled brother overhears Ruby and her mother Lettie spilling secrets and making plans across the garden path...well, things can get messy and anything can happen...
Donna Douglas is a great writer and so far I have loved this series. Well Recommended.
CONTENT:
SEX: None VIOLENCE: some attacks as a result of the Blackshirt uprisings. PROFANITY: Pretty mild. B,D, J PARANORMAL ELEMENTS: One patient is a Romany and tells fortunes to any who will give her the time of day.
MY RATING: PG
*Many thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for my free ecopy to review
Book 3 of the Nightingale Girls series spends more time with the individual nurses as they try to reconcile their training, their future and their personal lives in their final year before their State Examination. If they pass, they can continue training as a midwife or other more specialized nurse, or work as a Staff Nurse. But if they fail...
Helen is trying to find her footing as she's torn between her mother and fiance. Millie's relationship seems rocky, but if they can both be honest to themselves as well as each other they may have a chance. Dora has to deal with her brother Peter's Blackshirt membership and narrow-minded hatred as well as her friendship with Ruby, which is still strained by Ruby's manipulations. One lie just leads to another, and lies are both hurtful and can be permanently damaging, as many of these characters discover, but ultimately reconciliation is the goal.
This series is based on true stories from real nurses, and it shows in the small details as well as the patient and nurse stories. I'm looking forward to Nightingales on Call.
Disclaimer: I received a free copy from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
I read Donna Douglas’s novel The Nightingale Nurses with pleasure, delighted to meet Helen, Dora and Millie again, having made their acquaintance in The Nightingale Girls and The Nightingale Sisters.
Donna Douglas not only creates believable characters within the hospital– the matron, assistant matron, sisters, staff nurses, patients and porters – but also their families and their lives and loves.
The Nightingale Nurses is set in the period in which Edward the VIIth is besotted with Wallace Simpson and Oswald Mosely’s and his blackshirts target Jews in the East End of London. Donna Douglas makes the reader aware of the historical background without overwhelming the reader with facts.
Helen, Dora and Millie are in their third and final year of training before they sit the State Exam to become qualified nurses. Each of them must work hard, accept discipline and sort out their love lives, one of which ends in tragedy,
I enjoyed The Nightingale Nurses and recommend it to anyone who also enjoyed Call The Midwife although the first is fiction and second non-fiction.
In true British soap opera tradition, The Nightingale Nurses picks up where The Nightingale Sisters leaves off. With drama filled lives, the girls are in their final year of nursing school and are ready to sit for their exams. I loved seeing their progress and development not only as nurses but in their personal lives as well.
Historically, the story is rich with the drama of Edward VII and Wallis Simpson, impending war and the Blackshirt persecution of Jews, something Dora discovers her brother is involved with.
The details are fantastic and the lessons learned are strong. Dora discovers Ruby's secret, Helen finds her backbone and Millie discovers strength she didn't previously have.
Third in the Nightingale series, the books really need to be read in order. They're entertaining and addicting and the perfect escape reading.
This series is really addictive !:) The story kept me awake all night - as I suffered, and cried, and hoped with the girls. It gets better and better... This third book is really excellent ! Can't wait for the next one!
It’s the final year of training for three young nurses at The Nightingale Hospital… Helen is at a crossroads in her life as she battles with her domineering mother over both her love life and her future career. Dora can't stop loving Nick, who is married to her best friend, Ruby. But Ruby is hiding a dark secret with the potential to destroy Ruby's marriage. Millie is anxious about her fiance, sent to Spain to cover the Civil War, and things only get worse when she encounters a fortune teller who gives her a sinister warning. With war looming in Europe, and the East End of London squaring up to the threat of Oswald Mosley's blackshirts, the women of the Nightingale have to face their own challenges, at work and in love. The Battle of Cable Street was an event that took place in Cable Street and Whitechapel in the East End of London, on Sunday 4 October 1936. It was a clash between the Metropolitan Police, sent to protect a march by members of the British Union of Fascists led by Oswald Mosley, and various anti-fascist demonstrators, including local trade unionists, communists, anarchists, British Jews, Irish dockers, and socialist groups. The majority of both marchers and counter-protesters travelled into the area for this purpose.German discontent had led to the rise of Hitler, who appeared to have solutions to their economic problems – and scapegoats to blame for them in the shape of Jews and other groups.Remnants of the religious nature of nurses remains in Britain today, especially with the retention of the job title "Sister" for a senior female nurse.By the mid-1930s the increasing technological and clinical demands of patient care, the escalating needs of patients for intensive nursing, and the resulting movement of such care out of homes and into hospitals demanded hospital staffs of trained rather than student nurses.Costermonger, coster, or costard is a street seller of fruit and vegetables in London and other British towns. The term is derived from the words costard (a medieval variety of apple)and monger (seller), and later came to be used to describe hawkers in general.
Thanks to NetGalley for a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
This series follows a number of young women who are in nursing school in London in the 1930's. The standards of the medical profession and the expectations of women in the workplace were so different from nowadays that it's fascinating. Each woman has her own story, although they are all loosely tied together through the hospital. This time the focus is mostly on Helen Tremayne as her relationship with Charlie deepens (much to her mother's dismay). We also learn more about Ruby and Nick's marriage, and Dora's place in that complicated triangle. There's little about Millie this time, although she is still engaged to Seb. Although the lives of these women are so foreign to an everyday American reader of 2019, I immediately can relate to their problems as they face work issues, relationship difficulties, and family problems. Although the specific circumstances are unfamiliar, the underlying relationships, both personal and work-related, are universal and speak to every reader. I'm looking forward to continuing with this series and have already ordered the next book.
This is book 3 in the series about trainee nurses at the Nightingale hospital, London, during the 1930s. World War 2 is looming in this one (set in 1936) with the onset of fascism, and Blackshirts mustering under the leadership of Oswald Mosley.
It mainly concentrates on Helen and Dora, less so on Millie. Helen is in love with Charlie, an East End lad, much to the annoyance of her bosy, domineering mother. Dora is going out with policeman Joe, while secretly in love with Nick who has just married her best friend Ruby.
Without wanting to give too much away, true love does not run smoothly for either of them. Or for Amy, another nurse having an affair with a married doctor.
The book ends with the 3rd year exams to qualify as a state registered nurse. I'mn already looking for a copy of book 4.
This was a very turbulent and heart rending episode of the Nightingale nurses. Helen is still battling with her domineering mother, Constance and is torn between love and her career as a nurse. Dora is still pining for Nick who is now married to the scheming, lying Ruby and now Dora knows her darkest secret that could blow their marriage apart. Millie is terrified by a fortune teller who predicts she will be wearing mourning soon and her fiancé, Seb has just gone overseas to cover the Spanish civil war. We also meet some new faces and even say goodbye to some old as this fraught instalment comes to a close. There was also a charming little Christmas vignette in the form of a short festive tale at the back of the book which I enjoyed as much as the main novel. These books just keep getting better and better, a great series.
I love this series of books. I am listening to them on audible while driving. Sometimes I find myself sitting in the parked car at work or at home, listening to just a little bit more of the story.
It is an endearing series of books that occasionally deal with some darker subjects, but in a very respectful way. It is the story of young women who are training to be nurses at the renowned Nightengale Hospital in the east end of London in the 1930's. It is authentic and real and yet a very readable series of books. It does have a little bit of romance in it, but not more than you would probably see in a bunch of 18-20 year olds.
I am really enjoying these books and can't wait to give them to my mom to read---she will love them, too!
This broke my heart and left it like that (but in the best way possible!)
Exploring Helen and Constance's relationship was interesting, as we could see how the same events were remembered differently by mother and daughter, however in the end I'm glad they were able to start repairing their relationship, even though it took the death of Helen's husband, Charlie, to do so.
With the Nick/Dora/Ruby/Joe plot, I'm glad Ruby and Dora were able to rekindle their friendship, and that Dora and Nick's relationship can start. I hated Joe before he beat Nick up (his possessiveness of Dora and his inability to take no for an answer were red flags from the start).
Overall, I found the stories told im this book emotional and well written, and I can't wait to read the next one.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
I cannot stress this enough: YOU NEED TO READ THIS. personally I've always been entertained through enemy's to lovers and murder books, but all 11 books kept me hooked throughout the entire series. These books don't feature any major plot twists but just reading about their lives was interesting enough. Also each chapter is read from the pov of a different character which is also a really cool way to write the book.
Absolutely wonderful story. I think this is one of my favourite Nightingale Stories so far. Especially the relationship between Dora and Nick is very interesting. I think Dora is my favourite character. She is very strong. I think readers will be very addicted to this story as time goes on. Helen is a very interesting character, her development of character will surprise you.
I love this series of books. Read them all on a two week holiday. Was totally addicted. Was the first time I had ever read anything of this genre and they have opened up a whole new genre that I am excited to read!!! Would definitely recommend for call the midwife fans and romantic comedy fans.
I have always loved reading and hadn’t read any others by Donna Douglas. This the 3rd book in the series and it has left me wanting to read more books by her.A fantastic read so much so I had to finish this book.xx
It’s the final year of training for three young nurses at the Nightingale Hospital, and Helen, Dora and Millie all have their own battles to face. With war on the horizon, the women of Nightingale must face up to the challenges ahead, both at work and in love.
Finding a good series is such a treat as you get to revisit much liked characters over and over! This is the third in the Nightingale nurses series and continues the stories of Dora, Helen and their friends as they train to be nurses in 1930'a London
