Hawkeye vs. Deadpool #1

Trick or treat! It's Halloween in Brooklyn, and that can only mean one thing -- disaster is right around the corner! Why are the bad guys dressed as good guys? And will Deadpool and Hawkeye kill each other before they figure it out? The blockbuster comic event of the fall returns for its official #1 issue (even though this is really issue 2, but what does a number really even MEAN anyway?)!

Following on from Hawkeye Vs Deadpool #0 (there was no reason to call it #0 by the way, it worked just fine as a first issue), we’ve got the second in the series, Hawkeye Vs Deadpool #1! Our quarrelsome twosome are fighting over some hacker’s drive containing info on SHIELD agents that Black Cat wants because money (which is essentially the same plot from Mark Waid’s Daredevil from a couple years ago). The trail leads them to an immoral funny farm where the inmates are dressed up as Marvel superheroes and brainwashed, and our heroes have a lengthy pointless fight with them.

The second issue’s not as great as the first but it’s got some nice moments here and there. Kate Bishop meets Deadpool for the first time, maskless too, and her expression when she realises he’s NOT wearing Freddy Krueger makeup is really funny! And Deadpool’s dumb sense of humour, putting an unconscious bad guy’s hand in a bowl of warm water, made me laugh despite myself.

Generally though it feels like the series has plateaued already, comfortably lapsing into the usual superhero tropes. Fight fight, quip, mild sleuthing, mystery final page, the end. Matteo Lolli and Jacopo Camagni’s art is fine but they’ve already abandoned trying to replicate David Aja’s style on Hawkeye, further emphasising the generic feel of the issue.

The series doesn’t have the strongest of storylines but that’s not really the point - this is basically just an excuse to have Deadpool and Hawkeye mess around in a comic, and this issue pulls that off well. Hawkeye Vs Deadpool #1 is a somewhat entertaining romp with some silly gags scattered about to jolly things along. It’s disposable but not terrible.

And what the hell is an Ooper car anyway?!

I see what you did there... having Kate dress up as Hawkeye but not that Hawkeye but Hawkeye from M.A.S.H. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

Great pair up of my favorite characters. The artwork was superb, and the addition of Hawkeye's deafness was fantastic.

I would have given it 5 stars like I did with issue #0 if at least one character was a bit more respectful talking about those sectioned with mental illness or someone at least pointed out they should be more respectful. The villains being that dehumanising is to be expected when they use mind control. It seem to be going a bit far for Black Cat but with most of what I know about Black Cat being from her solo series and non comic media I guess I could have an inaccurate impression of how far she’s willing to go. This is very gang lord for a heist villain. I’m fine with flaws but some of the non dialogue text implies to me book isn’t treating this as a character flaw.
