Rightsizing: A SMART Living 365 Guide to Reinventing Retirement

Rate this book
Most people don’t start thinking about retirement until they hit 40, 50 or beyond. But what if making some simple changes in the way we live today gave us the opportunity to retire earlier and more fearlessly than we expect? Even better, what if a way existed to start enjoying life with more peace of mind, happiness and freedom right now? If you’re worried about your future and are tired of the rat race that seems to lead nowhere, then rightsizing might be the best way for you to reimagine your life—starting today!

What is rightsizing? Rightsizing is the conscious choice to reinvent a lifestyle that more closely fits you and your family in the best possible manner at every stage of life. Rightsizing provides the freedom to let go of the daily grind of just getting by day-in and day-out. So instead of constantly striving toward more and more stuff and trying to keep up with the neighbors, rightsizing avoids unsustainable debt, stress, addiction and competition and allows us to recreate life with meaning and purpose. Rightsizing helps us each design a life that lets us spend our time and resources on whatever is most important to us. And best of all, rightsizing is about discovering what gives our life meaning, makes us smile, and allows us to sleep well and deeply every single night. If you don’t have that now, maybe it’s time to rightsize your life.

Rightsizing—A SMART Living 365 Guide to Reinventing Retirement is a collection of blog posts written by Kathy Gottberg on her blog SMART Living 365.com. Reading Kathy Gottberg’s book, RightSizing: A SMART Living 365 Guide To Reinventing Retirement is like sitting in your living room having an important, but pleasant, conversation with a good friend. Kathy “gets” what is truly important for creating a meaningful and happy retirement and offers extraordinary guidance on how to achieve, what you seek in this new life stage..

The book, Rightsizing begins with the premise of the value of decreasing the size of our homes as we enter retirement, but then moves into the equally as important considerations about creating the right environment for ourselves in this new life stage. Gottberg provides numerous suggestions on how to evaluate what is really important and how to achieve the peace of mind that allows us to enjoy each day retirement.

With topics such as, home size, not worrying about other’s opinions, how much work or money is too much and what is real abundance, Gottberg touches on just about every aspect of life any retiree might want to consider to make their lives right for their happiness.

Three of my favorite sections are Packing Light, Other Thoughts on Eliminating The Unnecessary and F*^K IT, an interesting variation on a Bucket List. The three chapters discuss the value of being true to yourself and not worrying what others think or care about what you do—definitely a call to arms for all seniors!

If you are anywhere near retirement, I urge you to purchase this book before you make any decisions about your life goals and life style in retirement. It could save you a lot of missteps.

There comes a point when many of us will look around and ask ourselves why we work so hard, maybe doing what we don’t even enjoy, to hold onto so many things we don’t even need or want anymore. The cost extends far beyond the material and often impacts our peace of mind and enjoyment of the day-to-day.

The thing is, downsizing sounds rather depressing as in, ‘you’re going down’ or ‘I’m down in the dumps’, or the ever frightful ‘downward slope’.

Minimalism is another trending word and, while I espouse many of its tenets, the word itself tends to feel as though you will somehow be denying yourself some pleasure, sacrificed to the higher cause of being ‘minimal’. It’s honorable, but will it be any fun?

Enter ‘rightsizing’. It’s just right, as in ‘right for you’. Rather than suggesting that we all must do the same thing, rightsizing is as individual as you are; in fact, the philosophy encourages us all to consider what is ‘right’ for ourselves at home, work and play. It’s a process, and while the title of the book links it to retirement, it would be well worth it for anyone of any age to ask themselves, ‘what is right for me?’

This is a game changer and it has become my manifesto for the rightsized life that I now pursue.

(In the interest of full disclosure, my name is in this book as an early reader and supporter. But, that shouldn't discount this review in any way, since the draft version was my constant companion as I kicked off my own rightsizing project. Thank goodness I had it!)

When I first heard the title of this book, Rightsizing, my reaction was probably akin to what many people feel: Dread at the idea of downsizing, and all of the things that play into that. The biggest one being—sacrifice. Not something I wanted to think about.
Imagine my heartfelt surprise when what I found within these pages was actually the opposite.
With a great conversational voice, and in-depth research, Gottberg has written a manual that in essence, is about getting more from your life. Her emphasis is on what you reap, not what you miss. And indeed, she and her husband have reaped enormous happiness by following these principles.
Rightsizing is about changing your focus to what you really want, and what’s truly important to you, and enjoying the life you fashion from there.
I love how she breaks down costs and savings—really an eye-opener! Gottberg gives great exercises to pinpoint exactly what you want and how you want to live, in order to be at your happiest and most fulfilled. She doesn’t give a one-size-fits-all prescription, but rather lays out a guidebook that you tailor to you, and your own situation.
I devoured this book. Thankfully, I realized I already do many of these things, although I learned a lot of useful methods to both keep me on track, and get to where I want to be.
Which is, as Gottberg points out with much humor along the way, to a more joyous style of living.
