Women as beautiful as she knew their power over men. He’d be damned if he’d let her thwart his shot at a new life. A wise man would make every effort to steer clear of C.C. And that’s what exactly he intended to do.

Sexy.

Gripping.

Romantic.

Captivating.

Well-crafted.

These are the exact words that best describe The Trouble with Misbehaving by Victoria Hanlen.

The story was set on 1864. The Trouble with Misbehaving follows the story of a beautiful, wealthy lady from London named Calista Caroline Collins or simply known as C.C. whose main purpose is to save her family in the war from New York and finally ask for her mother’s forgiveness from the scandal she brought to their family 10 years ago. And a highly skilled Captain who used to be a Royal Navy officer, a blockade-runner, and a prisoner of war who is now trying to live a new life far from danger and the life he once knew and loved. Together, they were caught in an unforgettable and dangerous adventure that led them to some things they were not expecting to discover.

C.C. badly needs him to help her save her family but Captain Beau Tollier doesn’t want to. He is trying to gain a new life while this girl is trying to drag him back to the shadowy past full of danger he definitely doesn’t want to relive again. The problem is Beau is attracted to this mesmerizing wealthy lady. It’s hard for him to resist.

Calista Carolline Collins character is one of a kind. After having a scandal, she was forced to leave New York and live in England instead. She was raised to have high standards – and yes, she grew up having those high standards. Intelligent, resourceful, strong, and generous to those who are in need. She has mesmerizing beauty, knows how to pull those seductive teasing that will make men give in. But, there were questions as to her insanity. I love digging into layers and secrets of CC’s character. She’s not just an ordinary character. And like what Beau said, she’s a brave complicated woman.

Captain Beau Tolier, the handsome, hot, most-skilled and most capable captain C.C. knew. He was once a prisoner and now, he’s trying his best to forget the bad things that happened to him and his ship while they were on a trip. He’s a scorching hot ship captain who just knows how to sweep girls off their feet. He’s like a male version of CC but there were also times where he seems like the total opposite of her.

Both C.C. and Captain Tollier’s characters appeared mysterious and intriguing from the very start. They were both strong independent characters. Because of their pasts, they now both have bad images. Two beautiful and strong characters just like them collided just made a beautiful mess. The development of their characters were on point. From being both so guarded and driven by their own different purposes in life, they slowly learned how to let those guards down, loose a little and learned how to let true love come in once it already – and finally, finally – knocks into your heart.

There was already a kissing scene on the very first moment they met and I can say that there’s just this instant connection between them which is quite believable. I like how that scene didn’t feel forced, given that it’s just their first time to meet and they just seemed secretly attracted to each other instantly. The instance they met, there was already chemistry. And I loved that they became two hearts tore between doing what the people around them thought them to do and what their hearts really wants in the middle of their journey.

Another first thing I noticed in this book aside from the strong characters and their chemistry is the language. The language is what truly impressed me the most. It was definitely hard to comprehend at first – for me – especially that the language used was the language people in London back on 1864 used. The words were so deep and their accent was something I am not really used to hearing or reading but how the author pulled it off was so impressive. That gives a lot to the historical-fiction feels of this book.

The world-building was perfect. You’ll be immediately transported to London 1864 at the very first page. I like how it immediately showed me how things felt and were used to be back on 1864. I can imagine what London, England is like back at that time and that’s one of the reasons why I love historical-fiction, it brings me back to the past. It informs me what’s a world is like back then. The language used plus the perfect world-building gave me so much satisfaction. This book perfectly filled that need I have for historical-fiction books.

Another thing I liked – and definitely miss! – are the snarky, sly and naughty remarks from Captain Beau and from Calista Carroline. I definitely enjoyed those moments. And I need to mention their one and only lovemaking scene! Dang, that was too hot, too sweet, too tender, just full of love. I felt giddy most of the time because of them!

After the dangerous adventure they fought hardly to conquer and finish, antagonists suddenly came. From romance and adventure, there was suddenly a touch of mystery I felt toward the antagonists’ identities. Just when you thought it’s already over and you already liked it, something will happen and people will appear making you realized that NO, THIS IS DEFINITELY NOY OVER YET. The antagonists were pure evil. They’re full of malice, hatred, greediness. You’ll despise the men to death.

I love the end. Both characters were independent and self-sufficient, they proved that love can still be there without trying to be someone else, that you can still be together and give everything to your partner without being less than who you truly are, and that you can still be “you” as an individual while being a part of that “us” as your partner’s other half. I liked how Captain Beau and C.C. chose to end all their confusions and sufferings. A brilliant and utterly satisfying end. An end that will give you so much more reasons to love and admire Captain Beau and Calista Caroline Collins even more.

Overall, I enjoyed it to bits. The Trouble with Misbehaving is a well-crafted novel of romance, adventure and determining what you truly want and need in your life. I would definitely recommend this to every adult romance readers out there! You shouldn’t miss Calista Caroline Collins and Captain Beau Toiler’s sexy, romantic, dangerous and adventurous story.

It's very diffult for me to decide what rating to give to this book...

Some parts I liked very much and some others I didn't like at all... So let's just put it in the middle and give it 3 stars.

The story could have been much, much better if only C.C. could have less trust issues. I didn't like how she was closed as a clam! She likes Beau, she admires him, she trust him with her ships, but she constantly comers him with the worst men-scum, even when he does everything to help her and even after he saves her life!!!!

Beau, on the other hand is at the same time a very determined captain, but very insecure male. I don't like my heroes that way!

All the time I wanted to shake him and yell to him to speak up!

But that's the same thing I wanted to do to C.C.

What I liked it was the back-story of the North-South war. It reminded me very much about Gone With The Wind!

I received an eARC, from NetGalley and the publisher, in exchange for an honest review.
This was a really nice book that sort of had role reversals. It was a easy read that you will want to finish for sure.
Calista ‘CC’ Collins is used to being talked about and is really a forthcoming person. CC has to be strong to live in a man's world. But CC does need Captain Beauford Tollier "Beau" help. Beau is trying to be done with the dangerous sea life and start living a safer type life. This is an enjoyment in watch them have 'words' to each other. How they do help each other when they are really in need.

I simply love it when I discover a debut author gifted with enough wit and charm to make me fall in love with everything in a novel, be it the storyline or the characters. Victoria Hanlen’s The Trouble With Misbehaving falls right into that category. I’ll admit that I wanted to read this book for that gorgeous purple gown on the cover (LOL), however so glad I did since now I know the significance of that color in the story.

The Trouble With Misbehaving was everything I love in a romance novel; A strong, intelligent and independent minded h and a sexy, charming rogue of a H. An intriguing storyline with action and adventures alongside great chemistry between the H and the h, who were as wonderful together as they were on their own. Victoria Hanlen is not only an excellent storyteller, I also loved her writing style.

Honorable Captain Beauford Tollier, the third son of the Earl of Grancliffe and the lauded “blacksheep” of the family, has just returned to England to… let’s just say to settle down and seek a more respectable lifestyle. Why I said lauded is that, though Beauford, or Beau as he goes by, was a blacksheep to his deceased father, it was apparent from his reunion with his brother the Earl and his family, that they held him in fondest regard. Beau has been a lot of things, has operated under various disguises. He’s been a in the Queen’s navy. He’s captained many ships, then became a blockade runner in the intervening years. He’s shipped questionable shipments up and down the ocean between America and the various ports surrounding it, his main stop being Nassau where he’s still revered and respected.

Beau had also had a family there, with a girl he’s saved from a brothel, had a child… but then tragedy struck. Beau has been pursued by this English Commander named Captain Rives. A man bend on seeing him hang at all cost. It’s as if some unholy influence was driving this man, and every time Beau escaped his clutches, it only worsened his wrath. At one point, luck ran out on Beau when he was captured. He would’ve been hanged, but escaped the noose just in time. Help came his way from some unknown sources, which would be revealed at the very end of the story. But nothing held Beau’s interest any longer. He wouldn’t have returned to Nassau as news of his little family perishing in yellow fever has already reached him. There was no other option but to return to England after 12 long years, hoping for a change, and if possible, some solace.

Yet again, as luck would have it, Beau’s hope for a quiet, peaceful life would be dashed in the most pleasurable way possible. The letter he received promising “highest rewards and benefits”, would indeed, turn out to be the most glorious events of his life as one Calista Collins aka C.C. happens to him.

C.C. would probably beg to differ since her reputation was ruined quite a few years ago, thanks to an unfortunate event back at her former home in America. She was the most beautiful debutante, with the most graceful poise and charm. Born as an only child to a wealthy family, C.C. was supposed to be the toast of the society. Yet, at 18, her hopes of nabbing any suitor, let alone marriage, shattered completely. The story is later revealed slowly but C.C.’s parents couldn’t wait to dump her to this side of the ocean to save face. After reading it all, I could see that her mother was extremely ambitious, on the verge of being blind to her daughter’s safety, if not her wishes. She refused to communicate with C.C. all these years after her father’s death. But now that she needed help as America is torn apart by civil war, she send summons to save her and her only living family, C.C.’s uncle and cousins. Ever hungering for her mother’s approval, C.C. would now move heaven and hell to trek the treacherous oceans to go to America. And for that, she needed the best man out there. The name that kept reverberating everywhere she inquired was the one and only, Captain Beauford Tollier. But darn if the Captain isn’t a tough nut to crack!

Surprisingly enough, the truth was that all these years, C.C. had harbored a secret crush on the so-called blacksheep of the family, whose life has always been shrouded in mystery. Living with Amelia, who is her cousin and the current Countess (Beau’s SIL), C.C. had ample opportunity to study the family portrait that is so different than the generations of Tollier men who are bestowed with dark good looks. Among them, Beau’s lifesize portrait with his blonde goodlooks and sea-green eyes had always been a beacon to her. It was rumored that he was the result of the late Countess’s indiscretion. But no one really knows the truth, and all I could see that his brothers didn’t care. Well, we meet only Thomas, Amelia’s husband. The other, Wills, was absent due to a family emergency. Thomas loved his youngest brother and was extremely happy to have him back home.

On their “first” meeting, Beau had no idea who C.C. was due to her plain dress-up. But he did notice the beauty all that dowdy clothing hid. Their attraction was instant, so much so, the first kiss happens when they’re on the run from some men who were apparently after C.C. The adventure had already begun for them both whether Beau wanted it or not. He was simply dragged into this whole thing even when he didn’t know what this “thing” he was getting involved into. Then C.C. and he got separated and Beau heaved a sigh of relief, or so he thought. But the curiosity about that mysterious beautiful woman kept niggling at the back of his mind.

Now, their “second” meeting was more... entertaining. Back at Grancliffe Hall, as Beau was submerging himself in all sorts of nostalgia, a woman’s voice broke his trance. The woman had a caustic reply to everything, with a voice as high as a fishwife. Or so they said. When Beau looked closer, he was struck dumb. It’s the same woman that had haunted his dreams for the past couple of days! Miss C.C., whom he’d thought was a simple governess or something, was now in front of her in all her glorious purple-clad beauty! Her dress, her poise, everything screamed money and high society. And she LOVED everything purple. :p Beau also noticed that men were mostly giving her a wide berth, well, except for those that were either fortune hunters or lechers looking for a sport. After all, C.C. is gorgeous with that porcelain skin, dark eyes and the abundance of dark hair. A man worth his salt can never deny her beauty. Though Beau tries his best to avoid her too, and getting entangled in whatever her proposition was, a chat with Thomas shed some light. Beau also learned of the gossips about her, where the cherry on top was the rumor that she’s quite unhinged… because she speaks her mind and doesn’t shy away from calling a spade a spade. So Beau decides it’s for his own good he needs to stay away from his batsh!t crazy woman, even though his body tells him otherwise every time she’s near. Oh it was just fun... mmm. :p

Unfortunately for him, when C.C. is determined to have what she wants, you can do nothing to stop her. Literally not, as Beau would learn in the next few months. ;) He’d learn that looks can be deceiving and there is a formidable yet highly intelligent woman hiding behind those seemingly vapid eyes. He’d come to love and respect her in a way no women had ever made him feel. However, their journey to fulfillment wouldn’t be so easy either.

Within days, with some right incentive, not to mention the insane amount that C.C. offered, Beau is blithely manipulated into the new adventure of his life; to chart the treacherous seas one last time. He’d take her to the America, put her on a homeward bound train and return with the new ship Redemption to collect what’s his. Sounds so easy, right?

Alas, it was not so.

After outmaneuvering yellow fever at Nassau that almost killed C.C. (who was then bring back to the living thanks to Beau’s careful vigil at her side), they finally embark on their journey quite late than expected. By that time, Beau was hopelessly in love with this enigmatic woman. You would be too. C.C. was just... unique. He had also gleaned some information from her fever-laden gibberish that he knew she would’ve never confide in him otherwise—like what happened to her in America that she had to be banished so completely. How she was a pawn to both her overambitious mother and a rival’s demeaning plans to bring her wealthy father down. How the gossipmongers and the newspapers simply killed her reputation with lies and how her parents just dumped her like she was some shameful secret to be swept under the rug. Beau was sad, angry and equally concerned. He wanted to know everything from her, wanted to help her... but most of all, he wanted to know how intimate C.C. was with Rives, his archenemy.

After reading C.C.’s story, what made me so sad was the fact that she had NO champion at that young age. Virtually no one to turn to. And her parents certainly didn’t believe her, instead chose to believe all those lies. Though she was alone, even afraid at one point, C.C. turned around and made things happen. After inheriting her father’s vast empire, she took the responsibility as any male heir would (a lack her parents always lamented), and I’d go as far as to say, did a splendid job; way better than any male heir could’ve accomplished. She tripled her father’s fortune with smart and crafty investments. She made sure to recruit intelligent people to work for her. She was well learned and well spoken... well, except that she was also straightforward which earned her the reputation of being crazy. C.C. knew how to make the most of this little ‘situation’ in her favor. She did her best to trump all those idiots who thought they can manipulate her into marrying them, would hand over her fortune to them.

Yet C.C. was still alone; a loneliness which now had a different undertone. She craved for someone of her own. Secretly, she still wanted to be married, have a family. And it was no brainer that she wanted Beau, certainly so after meeting him in person. Their chemistry was so palpable, there shouldn’t be any doubt. Yet C.C. was scared that his regards for her would diminish the moment he’d hear those vicious lies once they’re in America. But would he believe those or her? Can she rely on him the way she had since she met him? C.C. was a beguiling mixture of strength and vulnerability which was made very appealing with the fact that she was extremely intelligent. It only proved that she wasn’t a cold, calculating woman only bend on fulfilling her own goal. She defied convention more often than not, yet never once felt like someone rash and TSTL. She knew her mind and what she wanted.

After the fever, then the pirates and Beau’s old rival Rives’s attacks, when they finally arrive in America, no good news was waiting for C.C. Beau couldn’t simply leave her there because he was still confused and didn’t know how to go about expressing his feelings. He cared, and so, even after her slight objections, he accompanies C.C. to her old home; a sprawling mansion with acres of land around. Or whatever was left of it. As anywhere during Civil War, the house was attacked, burned to the ground… and there was no trace of C.C.’s mother Delia and her uncle or her cousins. At last, when they manage to find them, John was missing (thought to be dead) and Delia was on death’s door with consumption. C.C. couldn’t believe this defeated shell of a woman was her once beautiful mother, whose dark looks she’d inherited herself! Delia and C.C.’s two remaining cousins, little boys really, were living in abject poverty, a stark contrast to C.C.’s own life. They’d lost everything here and yet, Delia never once replied to C.C.’s mails. Then again, Delia’s pardon had a condition, that C.C. must marry a peer and reclaim her ‘good name’, otherwise there’d be no reconciliation. All her life, all C.C. ever wanted was her mother’s love and acceptance. Even at death’s door, it was apparent that Delia wasn’t keen on forgiveness. It saddened Beau, just as much as it did me. Ever ambitious, Delia made remarks on Beau’s unacceptable past, undependability and a lack of title at the first chance she’d gotten, citing he’s totally unsuitable for C.C., who was born and bred for something much more grandiose. Delia did love C.C. but it wasn’t the type of motherly affection. Some women are simply incapable of being a “mother”. Even before her death, all Delia cared for was her nephews’ future. She made C.C. promise to take care of the two orphaned boys; a promise C.C. held within her heart even when her mother was buried and gone.

After this journey, there was no doubt in Beau’s mind. He knew he’d fallen in love with C.C., but Delia’s words hit home, so he decides to stay rather aloof surprising her quite a bit. When C.C. requests that Beau help them cross the ocean one last time, Beau could only say ‘yes’. He knew the dangers, but he also knew he was too involved to refuse her anything at this point. He can never put her or her loved ones in danger. It was more than clear to me that Beau wouldn’t be able to stay away from her long, no matter what Delia thought about their match, and I was quite correct on that regard. Beau was type of man who, when he falls, falls utterly in love. He was besotted with C.C. He would do anything for her.

It was on that voyage, after they made a successful crossing and landed on Nassau once more, that C.C. decided that she must act on her feelings. She loathed the thought of letting him go after the end of this journey. C.C. simply didn’t know how she’d survive without him. It was no longer some silly emotions after all they’ve been through. Beau had saved her life more than once, held her when she needed to be held and cried her heart out. He was the balm to her soul. He’d been there, proving more than once that he’s an amazing man, a good man despite his shadowy past. A man C.C. would dearly love to have with her for the rest of her life. But she wasn’t quite sure he felt the same. To her, all they now had was one night to act on their mutual attraction. One night that she can hold onto, to know what it feels like to be with the man she’d fallen in love with.

Well, for Beau one night would have never been enough. He didn’t even think he’d ever get to hold C.C. more than a few heated kisses. But after that night on the ship, he knew he had to act on his feelings. He had to try and convince her that he’s good enough for her. That despite his lack of a title, he can keep her happy or he’d die trying. C.C. was stubborn but Beau was determined... and together they fit so well. Together, they were a force to reckon with. And while they were at this push and pull, some new twists and information are revealed and once more, they find themselves dealing with villains who had plagued their journey since the beginning.

TBH, I can go on and on, write an ode to C.C.’s many talents (because I’m such a fan of hers!) and a poem on Beau’s roguish charm (ooh lala). Even then I won’t be able to adequately express how lovely this story and its central characters were. All I can say is that give The Trouble With Misbehaving a try. You won’t regret it! 4.5 excellent stars.

PS: the next installment, The Trouble With Seduction, is about a character who was C.C.’s close friend and deemed deceased throughout the story. I don’t know if it’s a story is taking place some years earlier or later because that part was left rather vague... But... but, I can’t wait to find out and I only have to wait till next month. Woohooo! :D

The Trouble With Misbehaving by Victoria Hanlen has a willful, cunning and enigmatic heroine; a hero with a shady past where he is termed as "unreliable and unsteady" and a crisp story that had me engaged all through the book.

This is the first book by Victoria that I have read and I enjoyed the story immensely. The cover, however, doesn't suit the story and I feel is unnecessarily skimpy. The blurb and title are intriguing and will definitely catch the readers' attention.

The plot is well conceived and executed and the author had me eagerly turning the pages throughout. The writing style is simple, fluid and arresting.

The story is well paced and I finished this book in one sitting, it was that arresting!.

I enjoyed meeting Calista or 'CC' as she is called. She is a woman hiding multiple layers in her character. Sometimes she acts so intelligently and right the next moment her actions are such that one feels that she is definitely mad! I was intrigued, mesmerized and then amazed as slowly all the layers came off to show the real 'CC'. Her motivations throughout the book left me stumped and doubtful whether she was really the scandal creating airhead or the strong, intelligent and shrewd woman who had stood strong in a man's world.

Captain Beauford Tollier is a brooding sort of hero who has seen and experienced much and now just wants to lead a safe existence but is confused and allured by 'CC' right from the start. Their adventures together had me smiling, then sighing and then praying for a safe and happy ending for them. The romance is the slow building but passionate type that had me rooting more and more for their HEA.

The dangers of the world at that time with America facing a war and England being neutral are realistically and most effectively brought to life by the author. She had me envisioning the life then and feeling thankful that I was safe here in the future!

All in all, The Trouble With Misbehaving by Victoria Hanlen is full of adventure, romance, suspense, danger and a heroine who is sure to win your heart. 4.5 out of 5 to it and recommended to all lovers of historical romance. I enjoyed Victoria's writing and will be checking out more of her books in the future.

I received an ARC from the publishers via Netgalley and I am very thankful to them. The above review is my honest and unbiased opinion and in no way influenced.

I think what I most enjoyed about Victoria Hanlen’s debut was its fresh storyline. Often the heroine of a “high seas” historical is on board the ship as a stowaway or part of the hero’s plans. Here, CC was the boss and the Beau went along somewhat reluctantly. I enjoyed that role reversal immensely. I also enjoyed the way we got to experience a bit of England, a bit of the Caribbean, and a bit of the Deep South all in one story.

I’ve read hundreds of historical romances, yet rarely encounter such a wily heroine--one who was not only loyal and brave, but cunning and able to turn her own scandal into fortune and “self-defense” of a sort (like pretending to be off her rocker when it suited her schemes). Similarly, Beau made for an extremely likable hero, especially when he pleads with CC’s mom so that CC isn’t left carrying a guilty burden for the rest of her life. Rives makes a suitably evil villain, and then tension of his vengeful pursuit remains high right until the final pages.

Any reader should be more than satisfied that CC and Beau earned their HEA. I look forward to more from this author.

I liked Hanlen’s strong heroine, C.C. She has taken trouble and scandal, and made a life for herself far from her American roots. She is the boss of the expedition when she hires Captain Beau Tollier to get her and her cargo to Wilmington, N. C., crossing the embargo line of the American North. It took C.C. a long time to get over her marriage issues, and the end of the book got a little thick on the ground with the bad guys, but overall a pleasant read.

Calista CC Collins may be a disgraced American heiress, a touch mad, a few years past what the English aristos may consider her "prime". But as Captain Beauford Tollier, and every reader who dares to venture into the story to be found here shall soon discover. This brilliant, beautiful, magnetic, and multifaceted woman is so much more than anyone could ever fathom.

Her counterpart in this adventure, and this is a true adventure from the word GO. One Captain Beauford Tollier, is the seafaring third son of a flourishing Earldom. A veteran of the English Navy, a PTSD sufferer, a man of many names and bounties, and a famous blockade runner.
Lastly, Beauford Tollier could be the one man able to match the fire that blazes inside the indomitable Miss Collins, with one of his own. If he can survive her and more to the point, her request...that is.

It is very clear from their first clandestine meeting in the darkness of a London pleasure garden; evil plotting men on their trail. There are to be no firsts or seconds here. As least not in terms of who is to bring the most drama to this story.
Instead, what we have here is a dance. A dance where the leading man and his lady take turns guiding, dipping, and twirling. First one and then the other. Sharing the spotlight, each shinning in his or her own light both separately and together.

While it is true that the romance here takes a backseat to the action for most of the read. Said action goes a long way in assuring that our lead couple is thrown together in situations which inspire...loyalty. To say the least.
Whether it is a shared nemesis from both of their pasts, baddies with a grudge, the desperation of Calista's mission, her part in the War Of Northern Aggression, or so much more. The circumstances in which these to find themselves build their relationship and this wonderful read.

There is so much going on in this read, that this reviewer dares not divulge too many details. Lest this critique become spoilery.
What can be said however, is that this book is for those who believe that there is no greater adventure than that of falling in love.

The Trouble with Misbehaving by Victoria Hanlen
Read on NetGalley
The title of this book suggests that the tone of the book will be a drawing-room comedy of manners, but what we get is a dramatic, fairly dark adventure. When Captain Beau Tolliver, known for his prowess in blockade running, is approached in London by CC Collins who wants him to run the Union blockade to bring her and her cargo to Wilmington, NC, he resists. After all, he’s just been released from months in a Union prison after having been captured during his most recent attempt. Besides, although a wealthy heiress from New York, CC is known for being eccentric (at best) and was sent to relatives in England by her family 10 years earlier on the heels of a scandal. But when she makes him an offer that is too good for Beau to refuse, he agrees. Thus begins a perilous adventure filled with storms, Yellow fever, and several dastardly villains.
On the plus side, both Beau and CC are complex, well-drawn characters. The story is related mostly from Beau’s point of view, largely because CC holds on to her secrets until nearly the final moments of the story. There is adventure galore as Beau proves himself to be a stalwart hero, and the growing relationship between the two is believable. Unfortunately, the villains, and there are several, are mostly one-dimensional. That they keep popping up throughout the tale nearly defies belief. Just when you think one has been vanquished or eluded, there he is again, wreaking more havoc. It is only at the very end of the story that the relationships and reasons for the enmity are finally explained. It is to Ms. Hanlen’s credit that these explanations make sense and bring the story together in a thoroughly satisfying way, but it has been a long time coming.

C.C. is a rather unique character. In the beginning the author paints her as a "tip of the iceberg" kind of character- which she undoubtedly is. She is resourceful, even if she is an heiress, and very wily to get through some situations.

Beau is a blockade runner of the highest order until a meeting he can't get out of his head lands him in prison. Newly freed he is trying to set his life on grounded course until C.C. Approaches him with an offer he can't refuse! Take her to North Carolina in exchange for several times the amount of fee he used to make. Wishing to start a shipping business he tries one last time to get around the blockade for her.

As it is usually wont to do, things quickly go awry and he finds himself entanged in a woman he didn't realize was as smart and witty as she was. He is hooked- pun intended.

I liked this book and would recommend it to others. It was an interesting fun read that leaves you wanting to read just one more chapter just to see what's going to happen. Good read and my first time reading Victoria Hanlen.

Intrepid, interesting and intriguing “CC” Collins was a whole lot more than she seemed to be at first glance and the layers of who she really was were peeled off one after another as the book progressed. Beau Tollier was strong, brave and true but perhaps changed from the man who left home 12 years before, especially after his last experience running the Union blockade. This story has romance, action, bad and good men, surprises, and a lot more. I enjoyed this book and look forward to reading more from this author in the future. I do have to say that I wondered what the animals were doing in cages on the boat in that last action-packed scene and kept wondering if someone was going to be eaten by the lion…but…why not?

Thank you to NetGalley and Carina for the copy of this book to read and review.

As the Civil War rages, CC Collins is determined to hire Captain Beau Tollier to help her bring food and supplies to her desperate southern family. Beau may not be moved by CC's plan to try to sail through the Union blockades, but he is drawn to her beauty and mystery. The captain is a stubborn and intelligent man who has a need to take control. CC is a determined and clever woman who has a need to be in charge. When they are thrown together, sparks fly as they navigate the troubled waters of their growing passions. While villains lurk in the shadows, the couple hides their secrets and real agendas from one another.
I enjoyed the untangling of their relationship during their dangerous journey. As a fan of historical romance, I especially appreciated CC's strong character and her willingness to take action in difficult situations. I will look forward to more books by Victoria Hanlen.

I received this copy from the publisher through NetGalley. C.C. Collins a beautiful young woman who left her home town in New York in disgrace, going from the most sought after debutant to being run out like a criminal..
Living half way across the world with her cousin and her husband a titled peer of England she has to put up a front of a crazed woman. Beau Tollier is a nefarious sea captain somewhat a rogue, she enlists him to make the trip back home to save her family. Along the trip they have to deal with an enemy from both their past. Falling in love with each other was inevitable. Through a stormy adventure , getting sick with yellow fever and being kidnapped and forced in a marriage C.C 'and Beau have a roller coaster adventure till the very end. I really enjoyed this book and can't wait to read the next book from Victoria Hanlen !

An enjoyable read where finally there is a heroine who has smarts and knows how to use them in a male dominant world yet all the while, retaining her femininity. Her facade is to have society believe that she is somewhat of a loony and outcast, yet behind this front, she surpasses most men's goals and achievements. Love it!! The story is very well developed, the characters are very strong and interactions believable. The Trouble With Misbehaving occurs during the Civil War period where it shows the perils of blockade running. You get to see both sides and how dangerous this period was to those who ran the blockades. Beau and CC were very well matched and I love the fact that she had so many differing intellects that kept Beau guessing just who this woman was. Again, a wonderful, enjoyable read.

The Trouble with Misbehaving, a Victorian romantic adventure, will have you turning pages late into the night trying to figure out when and how a handsome pirate and a prim society lady will end up together. The couple meet under surreptitious circumstances when CC hires nefarious sea captain Beau Tollier to risk prison—and his life-- by running a dangerous blockage to transport her across the ocean to reach her family home in North Carolina. Unbeknown to the captain, CC has a hidden agenda. You will hate CC, then you will love her, as she fiddles with the noble and caring Beau’s heart. Well drawn characters, beautifully crafted descriptions, and well researched events occurring during the Civil War.

3.5/5. This book appears well-researched with good descriptive prose and a good solid strong hero in touch with his emotions. The heroine however swings between extremes, abrasive and cool one moment nuzzling and needy the next. She wears so many masks, ripping off one to reveal yet another, frustrating me as much as she did the hero - probably more so. The villains (there were quite a few competing for supreme evilness) are a little bit over the top, especially Rives who held inexplicable grudges against both of them. Still, the setting of blockade runners during the American Civil War is interesting and is overall quite an entertaining read.

Thoroughly enjoyable and enthralling you cannot wait to see how it all works out in the end. You relate to and understand the villains. You root for the misunderstood and guarded main characters. The children are beautifully portrayed; you just may fall in love with them. This book is entrancing and you won’t want to put it down. What's more this book illustrates in phenomenal detail the effects of war on the civilian populace. You might even find yourself in tears at some stage while you read this book. I would highly recommend you put this book on your wish or reading list if you are a fan of historical romances.

Calista Collins and Beau Tollier take you on a trip during the Civil War from England to Nassau and then can they make it through the blockade to deliver supplies to Wilmington, North Carolina. Calista shows a completely different personality in England from the one she displays when they are oway from there and what a surprise for the captain. They both have dark pasts that seem to follow them. Can they deliver the goods, what woll they find when they get to the plantation where Calista's family is? Will the attraction they have for each other develop into something more? Be sure to read the books and see what you think.

Thank you netgalley and Victoria for the wonderful read~

CC is one of a kind heroines, she is a epic heroine~

CC was sent to England when she was involved in a scandalous event, she is now nearing 30 unmarried and at times thought to be a nut. But our CC is NOT as she appears....she is one of the very best heroines EVER~

Beau... hot... hot and tender and amazing and I fell in love with him quick and his behavior was heroic at pretty much every moment, I just wanna gush...lol. I loved the story, the writing, the characters, the dram, the past..the future.. I guess I could say I loved it all~

The Trouble with Misbehaving was the first Civil War Romance that I have read (except for Gone with the Wind, of course). I found Victoria Hanlen’s debut engaging from the start. Switching the characters’ perspectives of the war from the American viewpoint to that of the English was both unexpected and entertaining. Bonus: I even learned something about the transportation of the time period. Batting 3 for 3 on finding enjoyable reads from first time authors; can’t wait to start the fourth—I just need to pick one first.

4.5 STARS

This is a story of love, betrayel and redemption. I love Historical Romance, and this one didn't disappoint. The way relationships developed was perfect. The character were interesting, and intriguing.

The description of the setting, and the background make me fell into the story instantly, and wishing I could travel back in time. Vivid, and increasingly compelling.

I received a free copy from NetGalley for an honest review. CC is an heiress who desperately needs a captain to get her through the blockade to the states to help her family. She decides to employ Beau in her mission but doesn't realize that is intrigue, mystery, and a villain who wants revenge. The villain was so wonderfully created and made the last several chapters very exciting to read. It is a great romance book with a strong female character and tons of twists and turns. A great read.

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. Take adventure add some romance and some mystery, and bad guys everywhere and you get this story. Who did what to who? The story is intriguing from the beginning to the end, once you start reading, it's really hard to put down. Beau is a wonderful, witty, damaged hero. C.C. is a little high-handed, but her heart is in the right place. Victoria is a great storyteller and I look forward to reading more books by her.

While I enjoyed the story I also thought it was too long. Not too long in the sense of the actual time it took me to read it because I did read it in one day but in the way it was told. It seemed to take forever to get to where it was going. There were some twists I did not see coming that made the story better. The story is good and well told. I just wish the pace was with a little more speed.

I really loved Beau's sweet side, “someone is watching. You are the envy of every woman on this ship and the private fancy of every man.” Beau is always ready for anything, especially where C.C. is concerned, “mmm, hmm .” He gave her a heavy-lidded smile and bent to nuzzle her neck. “You’ve had this effect on me from the start.” I really liked this book. I want to marry a man like Beau.
