Birdie

Rate this book
All her life Birdie Clements has felt like an outsider. The only dark skinned member of her white Southern family, she struggles to fit in - even at home. At eighteen years old and with only a handful of months before she graduates, her parents' marriage falls apart and Birdie is shipped to her mother's small hometown to live with an uncle she never knew she had. The plan is simple: get through these last few months with her head down, graduate, and then be free to move away and finally take control of her life once and for all. The plan did not include falling for the very popular, very handsome, very pigment-challenged Wesley Lott. But things don't always go according to plan...

This book has mature sexual situations and language and is intended for a mature audience.

I love a good story. Whether told through music, movies, television, oral, anything. If I can connect with the people in the story, it's a success. Of all the methods of story telling though, books are my absolute favorite. The written word is like a juicy burger when I'm starving - it leaves me happy, full, and deliciously satisfied.

I just....

Sigh...

This is a good book. A great fucking story, and it's definitely one that made my heart swell and ache throughout all of it.

The story tells of 18 year old Birdie. A biracial young woman who is suddenly displaced by who she thinks is a foster family when things suddenly come to light. Such as that her foster mom is actually her birth mom but her foster dad is still just that, her foster dad...although she finally understands why he struggled to look at her while growing up. When Birdie's parents separate, her mom gets custody and whisks her away to the small town of Shenoah. A town her mother grew up in, to stay with an uncle that she never knew existed.

We follow Birdie as she resolves herself to push through the last few months of school in this small town that she has no interest in, and her need to push herself into doing something better for herself, while she compartmentalizes every doubt and emotion she has, including the startling revelation about her conception.

That all changes when she meets Wes. It's from there that we take the eight/nine year journey through she and Wes' friendship as it subtly develops into more. Through their likes and loves, their up's and down's, and we read about how they grow with each other and away from each other. The storytelling is great and the banter between Wes and Birdie is authentic. There are times when Birdie's actions are so damn frustrating but you get it. After seeing the way this girl operates and what she's been through, there's no way you can't get it. Happy I didn't sleep on this one. 5 solid stars.

I enjoyed this book quite a bit. I found the story really engaging, the relationship between the two mains was well developed with just the right amount of angst and the characters felt realistic.

The book is called 'Birdie' and for good reason. This is really her story although Wes has a good amount of real-estate and is sometimes more sympathetic than Birdie.

Birdie is biracial. She believes she was adopted into her all white family. Until a bombshell is dropped and suddenly she finds herself plucked out of her familiar school in the last four months of her senior year and dumped onto her unsuspecting uncle Tim, a sheriff who lives in the town where he and her mother grew up.

We first meet Wes as he overhears an intense conversation between Birdie and her mother. His response immediately endears him to me. He is quick witted and his subsequent actions signal to us that he is a pretty decent guy.

The book follows along as Birdie tries to adjust to her new situation, her new school and learning about her identity and her past. But we also follow Birdie and Wes into adulthood in a series of vignettes that allow us to watch their separation and then return to each other.

There are two central things about this book. The first is Birdie's coming to terms with her family, her mother and her feelings of abandonment. She has built a tough suit of armor and makes a lot of promises to herself in order to protect herself.

The second is Birdie and Wes' evolving relationship. This is truly a strength of the book. I like the way the author allowed this to evolve. Wes is drawn to Birdie and he is proactive about it only in the way that a person of confidence and conviction can be. Birdie is more wary. She's been a bit more battered by life than Wes and it takes a lot to get her to open up. A LOT. Until she does, we get to see them become friends, think a like, learn how to read each other's tells. It is such a nice relationship.

But this is a romance novel and things can't be smooth especially not when the two protagonists start out their romance as teenagers. We live with Wes and Birdie over about seven years where they break up, move away, argue, fight, but somehow manage to still find their way back to each other. I must say I did want to smack Birdie on two very distinct occasions, but I got Birdie so I couldn't be too mad at her.

In the end I come away with the simple fact that these two were meant for each other regardless of obstacles even the ones they make for themselves.

Outside of Wes and Birdie's relationship I did like a lot of other little details that made the book feel textured. Birdie and Tim's relationship, the complicated and fraught relationship with her mother, Wes' family dynamic, the significance of a cookie recipe, a lyric journal, Birdie's first book club...so many things.

One thing that stops me from giving it a full five stars is that I would have liked the final act to play out longer. I needed them to let their romance flourish a bit more once they had come together for the final time. It felt too abrupt. I wanted to spend more time with the older, wiser, really have their heads on right Birdie and Wes. Even an epilogue would have been welcome.

Otherwise it was a really nice book.

Moonbeams and hearts and stars and bunnies and sh*t! These two have literally melted me. I am a puddle on the floor speaking to you from underwater.

Every so often, I read a novel that's a little outside of my wheelhouse, but it's able to grab ahold of me from the beginning and keep me on board for the duration. Maybe it's the style of writing, maybe it's the characters, maybe it's the story itself…or a combination of all. But whatever it is, it totally worked.

This novel is story-rich for such a short read. It begins when Birdie and Wes are teens and it spans over about 10 years, but this is very much an adult read and not YA. Sometimes their situations and feelings were so adult, I'd forget these two were teenagers. I don't know if that's a good thing or a bad thing, but either way, it was a sweet and treacherous journey with them navigating their way to each other.

Also, I may or may not have shed a tear or a hundred. But IN MY DEFENSE, Birdie has some major baggage preventing her from moving forward. And because of that, the themes running through this book (yearning for love, family, and a sense of belonging) become more poignant. Also, this is IR and it plays a big role in some unexpected ways. So...more feels.

This was dreamy, weepy, and just...lovely.

So sweet I fear I need to check my blood sugar.

Seriously, Wes and Birdie are so adorable. I loved the character progression. Birdie's trauma history and abuse history completely explains why she is unable to connect in a deep way to anyone and why she runs. I love that the author does not give the fantasy that love alone fixes childhood wounds without compromising the complexities of relationships just to force an HEA. Oh, and there is an HEA.

I know some people complain about Birdie, and I get it, but this girl has been rejected her whole life and not allowed to connect. People loving her is frightening so she put up walls and just turned to stone. She's a frozen person. If someone gets too close like Wes did, then she runs. She's terrified of getting hurt and she doesn't feel good enough. It's a terrible combination. This is why work, school, and being independent as possible works for her. This is why she's married to routine and not wanting change. In a world that is always unstable, being hyper-controlling helps keep her grounded and sane. She also did not want to add Wes to her list of people she's been abandoned by. If you run then you can't get left.

This book is very well written and I hope to read more from her in the future.

My heart... *inserts Fred Sanford gif*

Sappy sweet and sentimental with just enough angst to make you not wanna choke a bish out for not following her heart.

Wes & Birdie are a new fave. Lawd knows that girl deserves some happiness in her life, and Wes was there for her, even when she wasn't for herself. Good gracious this book left me in a beautiful mess. Click it up!

This was a beautiful story. I didn't love some of Birdies choices, but she was broken and abandoned so it was so hard for her to let Wes love her. She felt unworthy. Given her background, I get it. Characters were great. Written beautifully. Ending made me happy.

Well hot damn!! Birdie's story seemed like such a great spring or summer read but golly gee willickers if it didn't bring the heat and drama in the winter.. This story was a bit of a roller coaster nearing the end. Loved the characters (especially Wes) and even Birdie( not always but overall), even though at some points from the way they acted I couldn't believe they were the age they claimed to be. I do wish I was able to find out more about a few characters and events but overall really good story and glad they got their HEA's :)

update:
This story always reminded me of a Cinderella story (the movie) for some reason. They have some resemblances of each other. I find myself wanting to reread this book every month just because its such a great read.
I loved reading their stories from highschool best friends to lovers to geown adukts trying to find their way in life. Truly a fun read

Wow! Birdie is one of those beautifully written love stories that you really sink into and just don't want to end. Spanning several years, it tells the story of Hummingbird "Birdie" Clements and Wesley Lott and their journey from friends to lovers. But the core of the story is Birdie trying to find out the truth about her origins. On her 18th birthday, she learns that she is not adopted--as her mother and father have led her to believe. Instead, it comes to light that her mother is having an affair and that the man who raised her suspects that Birdie is actually the product of one of her mother's dalliances. As the family falls apart, Birdie's mother abandons her in Shenoah, Texas with her uncle, who happen to be the sheriff. Already from her first day in town, Birdie and Wes's paths cross, but their journey to love takes a slightly roundabout course.

What I love about this story is how honest it feels. MC Carr does not shy away from talking about race. Instead, she addresses the casual racism Birdie deals with and her own insecurities about being biracial and about finding out who her father really is. Carr peels away the layers and reveals Birdie's vulnerability--and helps us empathize with her, even when she is making huge mistakes.

I loved following her story, and I loved watching how she and Wes fall in and out of love. The way they came together and the chemistry between them was true to life and still had the sparkle of star-crossed lovers that we so adore reading about. A definite 5-star read for me and highly recommended! Add it to your TBR list ASAP!

I really enjoy reading new authors and this book at a really interesting story of a biracial young woman struggling with the abandonment of her mother and some revelations about her father. I loved the character of Wes but I don't think Birdie's resistance towards a relationship with Wes is flushed out, in fact I didn't understand how he could still love her after how she pushes him away. The beginning of the book is really good and I enjoyed to see how the relationship develops between the two characters. It's the middle towards the end is what lowers my rating since the two characters are abruptly back together and instantly get back together after he professes not to talk to her again. This is overall a good first start and I can see this author developing into a great writer once she flushes out her story and takes more time to develop the characters.

I loved this book so much. Birdie's family treated her like crap. Thank goodness for her Uncle Tim. I would like to find out some of the back story on him. Her poor excuse of a mother just dumps her off and sneaks off in the middle of the night. Her sister only cares about herself and her stepfather is just an asshole.

Birdie had no choice but to be strong, she only had herself to depend on, until she met her Uncle.

Wes and Birdie's story is one I will remember for a long time.

Loved This

This was a lovely read. Mrs. Carr you wrote a beautiful book. I couldn't put it down. I loved how Birdie's character is strong yet so vulnerable. I love a man that loves with everything that is in him. Wes was that man. Seven years went by and he loved her still no matter what.
You hit on a lot of serious topics in this book and you wrote about them from an honest point of view.
I can't wait to read your next book MC Carr!!!!

Great book. Please pick up and read.

Happy Reading!!!

Found another gem of a writer to add to my list!!!! This story was so good I loved it even the parts where I wanted to pull my hair out. Birdie girl was going through it... I felt for her she had a sad upbringing a stepfather who ignored her, a sister who tolerated her and a mother who lied to her about her true self and then dumps her with a uncle she never new she had. But thank God for Uncle Tim, loved him.

Then she meets Wes and girl let me tell you after meeting him and getting to know him in this book I would have been like animated gifs photo: Animated Graphics, Animated Gif, Animated Gifs, Animated Gifs, Keefers jessicaalbabedtimehunni.gif

This adorable story is a keeper in my heart. These are the types of books that are my fav, I love young adult romance that grows into adulthood. I do need another one stat.

KU: loved it

Even loved the acknowledgements. Hummingbird or Birdie is dealt some pretty hard blows in her life, but she finds a great friend is Wes Lott. He was there for her during her breaking point and picked up the pieces when she refused to see the good in herself.

It was definitely unfortunate what happened with Katy, you can't help but feel bad for her but I was glad when Wes and Birdie got back together.

Great book!

In life some people find themselves running from there problems. They choose not to speaking up or face their fears head on. They often figure out in the end that something or someone wasn't really meant to be left. And that while running your demons are with you every step of the way.

I'm glad scrolling through FB looking over Marcia's random postings for with new books. I took a chance on Birdie by M.C. Carr.

I really enjoyed this book. I love the way the characters were explored, the way the romance blossomed. It seemed so natural and realistic. I felt a certain comfortable calmness during the narration of the story. Some parts were exciting as well and made me smile. The story was sweet. The struggles each characters faced didn't seem far fetched. I felt for them. I would definitely be reading more from this author in the future.

At times the heroine drove me crazy with her commitment issues but it all came together in the end a perfect story it revolved around the present and past and lucky for us the readers the author placed dates before chapters so the back and forth was almost seamless. I really enjoyed reading this story.

I wish i liked this book more. It was a time-lapse romance where it starts in 2008, goes back to 1999 then shows you how their relationship forms throughout the years... which is not my cup of tea, I'd rather have the romance play straight through. the heroin was annoying, but Wes was amazingly amazing. loved him.

I really enjoyed this book. I found the love story very unique and it was interesting to get an insight into a interracial relationship and the insecurities within it. The only downside was that the book is way too short - I would've really enjoyed a couple more pages :)

Oh mahhh gaw 😍

I absolutely, positively, supercalifragilistically loved this book. Now, let me tell you why. This heffa (M.C. Carr --and I use this word lovingly --seriously, I do) pulls you in quickly, and I mean quicker than quick sand quick. She entices you with this lost love story from the get-go. You get this heroine, Birdie, who comes across a picture of the love of her life with another woman (say, what??) that leaves you scrambling to read the next however many pages this book has to get to the end to see what happened, how they met, and what happens in the end.

There are so many reasons why I like this book. First of all, Ms. Carr had an editor look over it (THANK YOU HEAVENLY FATHER), or at least she had someone edit it. There are a few minor misspellings and grammatical errors, but it's easy enough to look over them and not even notice them while you're inhaling the book. Secondly, i loved how natural the relationship grew and developed between Wesley and Birdie. He wasn't that typical trillionaire, business mogul/cowboy/NFL star/music writer/singer (all at once), drop dead sexy man with broad shoulders, narrowed waist, bulging muscles (pronounced Muh-skulls lol), deep baritone base, ten foot mammoth that all these typical heroes seem to be. He was normal! Can you believe that? He was actually normal! Would you lookie there, who woulda thunk normal would speak to us regular 'ole folks. The heroine was pretty damn normal too. Loved it. Love normal. Did I mention I love normal?

Third, they didn't have this instant sexual connection and fire bursting from their fingers on contact. They didn't even really notice each other (Jk, he noticed her..well, noticed her and her mom) until a few run ins, and when they did "see" each other it wasn't because of looks or sexual chemistry, it was because of other real life situations (not saying 'cause it'll spoil).

Fourth: I loved how they didn't just immediately hop into bed, or my ultimate favorite get back together as soon as they had a falling out. They actually had to FIGHT FOE EACH OTHER. There was growth, there was real life experiences and struggles the two had to face together and separate to be Birdie and Wes.

I felt like I knew them, and was rooting for their love like that one aunty who knows about your life but isn't really in your life lol.
I just really really appreciated the honesty and realistic take on this romance. This is something that has happened, this is something that could happen. M.C. Carr. I appreciate you, and I am no lie stalking you and your work (not actually stalking you 'cause that's weird). I look forward to see what she has in store for your audience and readers!

I read this on kindle limited, and best believe I'm about to buy this ho.

Is there one thing I dislike? Yes, but that's 'cause in real life I can't stand (blank) 'cause it just means you shouldn't even be with that person in the first place, and (blank) is always such a touchy subject for me, but if I told you I would totes spoil the whole story ...soooo, guess you gotta read it to find out!! 😉

Birdie is a gem of a novel that resonated deeply with me. As a biracial reader with a Caucasian mom and African American dad, I often find it challenging to discover books featuring heroines who reflect my own background. Birdie not only offers that representation but does so with such beauty and grace.

M.C. Carr's writing is exquisite, weaving together themes of love, identity, and family in a way that feels both intimate and universal. The story is rich with emotional depth, and the characters are well-crafted and relatable. What truly stood out to me was the authenticity of Birdie's journey, her struggles, her triumphs, and the love that surrounds her.

This book is a celebration of diversity and the power of love in all its forms. It's a must-read for anyone seeking a story that will touch your heart and stay with you long after the final page. Thank you, M.C. Carr. Birdie has earned a special place on my bookshelf and in my heart.

Amazing!!!

As I wrap up this book, my heart is still clenching because this love story took me through the ringer, but it was so so worth it. Wes and Birdie had a lot of things to work through to get to their HEA and you’re just rooting for them the whole time. It completely made sense why Birdie was so afraid to give herself fully to Wes. To be honest this book could’ve gone on a little bit longer to find out whatever happened to her mother and her sister but I’m OK where the author ended it. I just could’ve kept reading about them because this is such a beautiful story. Heartbreaking heart clinching but beautiful. I’m almost in tears writing this because I loved the story so much. The love that these two had for each other it’s rare and not always perfect, but it was true and pure, and thankfully they were able to find each other again in the end.

Absolutely Brilliant

This is first time author for me and I am really glad that I had the chance to read this book.

An intense read but wonderfully heartfelt. This novel grabs your heart and won't let go, each page better than the last. I couldn't put it down. Brilliantly detailed, realistic writing style that let's the reader feel every emotion. Interwoven and beautifully told.

Amazing and memorable characters that takes you on a breathtaking journey, a powerful love story full of twist and turns. A story poignant with depth and honesty and a feast of emotions. I absolutely loved this book and have no hesitation whatsoever in recommending it to everyone. A MUST read. Thank you M.C.C 😀
