I devoured this book after a trip to Vegas a few weeks ago that left me feeling like I got ripped off when I should have been getting great deals. Comp City is interesting, because it is not so much a book on how to get free shit from Vegas. It's a book on working the comp structure in Vegas. Hopefully, this results in free shit.
Rubin is clearly an insider, and he brings you effectively into the world of pitbosses, floormen, high-rollers, and even thieves and losers. A couple of things to note about this book:
1. While Rubin claims that these techniques work no matter how big your bankroll is, let's be honest -- if you're not rolling into your Vegas weekend with at least several thousand dollars to gamble with, forget it.
2. Some of Rubin's techniques border on morally questionable -- this is a good thing. Casino's rip people off unscrupulously every day. Turnsabouts fairplay.
In the end, however, I was left wondering -- why go through all the risk of losing your bankroll just to save a little money? For example, one of his big approaches is how to get rooms comped. While I'm always down with a free night in Vegas, am I willing to risk thousands of my own money just to save on a hotel room that cost me $51 mid-week? No. Or risk a serious hit to my bankroll just to score a meal ticket? Probably not.
Honestly, this book his how to be a high-roller. And high-rollers aren't concerned about losing some money to gain some other comps. High-rollers are interested in being high-rollers, whatever it costs.
