About the author

Liz Schulte

55 books612 followers
Many authors claim to have known their calling from a young age. Liz Schulte, however, didn't always want to be an author. In fact, she had no clue. Liz wanted to be a veterinarian, then she wanted to be a lawyer, then she wanted to be a criminal profiler. In a valiant effort to keep from becoming Walter Mitty, Liz put pen to paper and began writing her first novel. It was at that moment she realized this is what she was meant to do. As a scribe she could be all of those things and so much more.

When Liz isn't writing or on social networks she is inflicting movie quotes and trivia on people, reading, traveling, and hanging out with friends and family. Liz is a Midwest girl through and through, though she would be perfectly happy never having to shovel her driveway again. She has a love for all things spooky, supernatural, and snarky. Her favorite authors range from Edgar Allen Poe to Joseph Heller to Jane Austen to Jim Butcher and everything in between.

This was a fun set of short stories. Most of the authors were new to me, but a few are some of my favorites, so this was a great variety of stories for me. I really liked Phoenix and Maggie in Liz Schulte's "Psyche Souffle." I'm not familiar with the series, but it seemed like Phoenix made a grand gesture, and I'd like to see what happens next. If reality TV shows were anything near as wonderful as Deanna Chase's "A Bourbon Street Valentine" I might actually watch them. It was fun to spend the day in Kat's life, especially when something exciting and crazy was happening. Tricia O'Malley's "Tequila Shots & Valentine Knots" had a very exciting cast of characters. With this small taste of the chaos they find themselves in, I would imagine there is never a dull moment. Delaney and Hugh in "The Vampire's Valentine Surprise" by Kristen Painter made me want to move to their town. I definitely want to see more of them. Barbara Annino's "Deadly Diamonds" was fantastic. I don't know what I would have done if I was Stacy and had those three sisters training me like that. It was a crazy situation, but I enjoyed reading it. Christina Miller's "Kidnapping Cupid" was very funny and snarky. I loved it. Rose Pressey's "Forever Valentine" was exciting, fun and mysterious. "Romance By the Bay" by Tonya Kappes was perfect. The magic, the pets, and the romance made for a fantastic story. I liked that there was a whole town of supernatural in Renee George's "My Furry Valentine." The characters found a lot of trouble, so there was never a dull moment. Michele Bardsley's "Cupid's Valentine" was super hot. I liked the story of Karee and Bret's relationship. Finally, is "Cold Flame" by Ann Charles. I can't help but want to know how the chase between Zoe and Reid plays out, and what happens to Violet. I'm willing to bet it is pretty complicated and entertaining. I received this book in exchange for an honest review.

4.5 Stars - Overall I found the stories in this anthology to be interesting quick reads. Most were part of an author’s individual series but the stories were interesting enough on their own. While I did enjoy reading stories by author’s I’ve read before I did not find any new authors in this group I was excited to go out and download their other books.

The reason I purchased the anthology was for Tricia O’Malleys Tequila Shots and Valentine Knots as I’ve read all the other books in the Althea Rose, Tequila series. I give it 4.5 Stars

Once again trouble is brewing in Tequila and this time Miss Elva is right in the middle of the mess. It’s Valentine’s day and some of our favorites are having a little trouble in the love department. I’ve been Team Cash since One Tequila but I think it’s time he and his family went back to the their world and quit messing with our friends. They obviously aren’t enlightened enough for our ladies and their friends. Can’t wait to see what happens in the next book.

"A magical taste of love and kisses in this anthology of eleven brand new paranormal short stories" revolving around Valentine's Day.

This was a free story from the author, and, on the whole, the writing appears aimed at young adult readers — no offense YAers. It's easy to see the difference in quality and depth if you read Ann Charles' "Cold Flame" and then the others. They also need a better proofreader.

Series:
"Psyche Souffle" (Abyss World, 23.5; Knead to Know, 1.5)
"A Bourbon Street Valentine" (Jade Calhoun, 7.5)
"Tequila Shots & Valentine Knots" (Althea Rose - xx.5)
"Vampire's Valentine Surprise" (Nocturne Falls, 5.5)
"Deadly Diamonds" (Stacy Justice, 1.5)
"Kidnapping Cupid" (Stacy Justice, 2.5; ToadWitch - 02.5??)
"Forever Valentine" (Halloween LaVeau, 5.5)
"Romance by the Bay" (Blossom Bay Shorts, 2)
"My Furry Valentine" (Peculiar Mysteries, 1.5)
"Cupid's Valentine" (Cupid, Inc., 2.75)
"Cold Flame" (Deadwood Shorts, 3)

The Stories
Liz Schulte's "Psyche Souffle" finds Maggie, the half-vampire baker, consulting with her partner, Izzy, about a Valentine's special they're planning for Knead to Know. And it's Cupid's love life that needs fixing… Cute.

Deanna Chase's "A Bourbon Street Valentine" finds Kat Hart, a jewelry designer, doing box office business on Valentine's Day. Turns out Eros has his own agenda for Valentine's Day and hosts his very own reality show.

The idea was cute, but it was too hokey for me.

Tricia O'Malley's "Tequila Shots & Valentine's Knots" is all about the Lonely Hearts party on Valentine's Day in Tequila Key where it gets out of hand, turning into an orgy of love.

It had its cute moments, but there was too many bits and pieces of back history that didn't really provide me with any meat.

Kristen Painter's "The Vampire's Valentine Surprise" finds Delaney Bellingham, a vampire, worked up over a bake-off. This is a sweet — I know, I know, I've already said "sweet" — story about life in a small town as Painter introduces us to the townspeople and their interactions. It's a dip into their lives, but at least it's a complete story.

Barbra Annino's "Deadly Diamonds" takes a while to reveal each hint about the character. Turns out that Great-aunt Fiona is being held hostage by six knives and the ghost of an ex-love. Another cute story about family. And could use some growing up.

Christiana Miller's "Kidnapping Cupid" is definitely an oops. God knows, I'd like to kill Eros what with that mouth of his! Seems he comes in three flavors: young, teenaged, and adult. It also explains why we need a Cupid to find love. And that's just one of the stories in this short. The Devil shows up here as well, and he reminds me of an Eve Langlais story.

Rose Pressey's "Forever Valentine" finds Halloween LaVeau throwing a party where some joker screws up the spell on the cookies. There's a lot of tell in this and could also use some growing up.

Tonya Kappes's "Romance by the Bay" finds a tourist bringing his dog in for an emergency to the one vet who can talk to him. The dog, I mean. It's another cozy story in a small town with the added benefit of talking pets. It's sweet how the town jumps in and tries to help when the shelter is threatened, but again, it could use some growing up in this tale of true love.
"Not like my idiot human who thought it was smart to give me a chicken tender. Sure, I begged for it, but I'm a dog. Idiot."
I gotta remember this when my cats are giving me the stinkeye. Whatever does Kappes mean when she says "he donated everything but this land"? Wouldn't it make more sense that he hadn't donated the land so they could stay?

Renee George's "My Furry Valentine" is a run-up to the Valentine Day's wedding of Sunny Haddock and Babel Trimmel with all the issues and family problems. This is a sweet one, with yes, the small town of shifters that step up to help out. Only there is more to the Trimmel family history than anyone suspected.

Michele Bardsley's "Cupid's Valentine" finds Aphrodite pushing for romance in the Mile-Hi Club between rival magazine editors. While it's a cute story — I love the ending, Bardsley's telling and the major lack of proofreading was distracting "too be honest".

Ann Charles's "Cold Flame" is a back history into how Zoe Parker met Reid Martin of the glass jaw and shying nature. This one was a pip and the best of the bunch. I gotta put her on my TBR.

The Cover and Title
The cover is vivid in its gradation of sky blue down to the bright fuchsia at the bottom with a vertical curtain of rain giving a Matrix-like feel to the background. A sexy cartoon witch in trademark witch's hat with its fuchsia ribbon and flower, a long ponytail of red hair curling around her ankles and her red-violet mini dress atop thigh-high zippered FM boots is waving her star-topped wand as a black cat lies at her feet.

The title is the theme for this anthology of short stories, the Kiss and Spell of Valentine's Day.

DELICIOUSLY CUTE, FABULOUSLY FUNNY AND DELIGHTFULLY ENTERTAINING !!!
Title: Kiss and Spell
Designation: A Valentine's Holiday collection of eleven standalone short stories
Author: Multiple Authors
My Rating: FIVE FABULOUS STARS*****
Oh my! Sweets for the sweet and just in time for Valentine's Day! I'm a very happy girl right now! I'm bouncing in my seat! I just purchased Kiss and Spell, the Valentine's Day Paranormal Collection of short stories from eleven very talented authors who I deem to be the sweethearts of the paranormal romance/supernatural cozy mystery genres. And they just happen to be some of my favorites! Now this bundle just released today so I've only started reading the eleven stories included but judging from what I've read so far - Wow! But to get eleven complete stories for less than one dollar? Well, that's just magical madness! And from bestselling authors like Michele Bardsley, Renee George, Kristen Painter, Deanna Chase, Rose Pressey, and Liz Schulte - and those are just the ones with whom I'm familiar. There are five more. Dear Gussie! It would cost more than 99 pennies for just a single story from one of these authors. Are you a fan of Kristen Painter's Nocturne Falls Series? Well, A Vampire's Valentine Surprise is included featuring one of our favorite Nocturne Falls couples, Hugh and Delaney Ellingham from The Vampire's Mail Order Bride. And of course, many of our favorite characters from the series are along for the ride and only too ready, willing and able to take part in the Valentine shenanigans. Do you love Renee George's Peculiar Mysteries Series? Well buckle up because our favorite human psychic, Sunny Haddock is very a very pregnant bride to be and about to marry her hunka, hunka, hot coyote shifter, Babel Trimmel! And when there's an event in the small community of Peculiar, which is made up of nothing but shifters, well except for Sunny, everyone gets involved - even a Valentine wedding! So let the mayhem begin! And we all love Michele Bardsley's Broken Heart stories so get ready for some hilarious mishaps when Aphrodite and her assistant Daphne take their matchmaking skills to new heights, and unfortunately to new hysterically funny lows! And let's not forget one of my all-time favorites - Deanna Chase! In a Bourbon Street Valentine, we return to - where else - Bourbon Street for another fabulous romance when Kat Hart attends Cupid's Ball and gets caught up in a totally unexpected competition, a wayward spell and a surprising web of romance with a very handsome stranger. Oh my! And that's just the beginning of all the fun and laughs included in this collection! So what are you waiting for? Get your one-click finger moving! Everything I've read so far is exceptionally imaginative, well crafted and well written. I totally love it! It's worth every single penny! What did I like about this collection? So far, everything! Would I recommend it? You bet and I am! This is one you don't want to miss! Haven't read any of the other books in the series??? No problem, it's not a requirement. You can still enjoy them since each story from the collection is a complete standalone short with NO cliffhanger. Fabulous entertainment and an awesome read!

Kiss and spell
I enjoyed most of these eleven paranormal romance stories centered around Valentine’s Day.
Psych Soufflé by Liz Schulte
I did like this story but I haven’t read the series. A psychic vampire has to play matchmaker for Cupid and finds love herself.
Library is spelled libray in chapter 4.
A Bourbon Street Valentine by Deanna Chase
I felt as if I were trapped in a nightmare. Only at the end do the heroes swoop in to rescue everyone. I liked it though and knew a couple characters slightly from another short story.
Tequila Shots and Valentine Knots by Tricia O’Malley
A cute story with a mischievous ghost who harbors a misunderstanding. Great characters.
The Vampire’s Valentine Surprise by Kristen Painter
I bought the collection for this story and it did not disappoint. There’s a red herring here that throws everyone off the real culprit. Wonderful, sweet (literally) story.
Deadly Diamonds by Barbra Annino
A three stooges episode if they were all witches. Kind of silly but with a smart pizza-loving dog. He was my favorite character.
Kidnapping Cupid by Christina Miller
Another slapstick comedy set in the Aunt Tilly universe. Not enough of the dogs for my taste.
Forever Valentine by Rose Pressey
I just could not get into this one
Romance by the Bay by Tonya Kappes
This story was a bit simplistic for me. A vet who can talk to animals finds love, but there are a few complications. After the story are three recipes.
Scraped was spelled scrapped, doctor is abbreviated Dr (a dog yells “Dr. Dr!”), and some information is repeated word for word in two consecutive chapters.
My Furry Valentine by Renee George
I absolutely loved this story. A human is set to marry a were-coyote but one thing after another goes wrong.
You and your are incorrectly spelled as you’re, commas are in the wrong place, there were missing words, its is spelled it’s, and my favorite, an unintentional transformation. “After he’d ran for Ruth, he’d turned himself into the sheriff.” That should be “After he’d RUN for Ruth, he’d turned himself IN TO the sheriff.”
Cupid’s Valentine by Michelle Bardsley
I do not like this series at all. Some demigods meddle in mortal lives, and the only paranormal elements are the introductions and conclusions.
Cold Flame by Ann Charles
I couldn't get into this one.

Kiss and Spell
While I did not read all of the stories at this time, I can see myself coming back to finish the ones I missed. All of the ones I read were awesome. The ones I didn’t was because I to put the book down for now and not because they were not good, I am sure that they are. Here are the ones, I finished to date:

A Bourdon Street Valentine by Deanna Chase
This story was excellent; you really did not know where it was going until the very end. I really enjoyed all of the twists in the story. No spoilers but your will like the ending.

The Vampire’s Valentine Surprise by Kristen Painter
This story grabs you from the start and you have no clue where it is going. I really enjoyed Delaney’s warmth and caring. The ending will take you by surprise for sure.

Deadly Diamonds by Barbra Annino
This story was a bit different from the others, a bit more on the darker side but still not scary. I totally enjoyed finding out the mystery to this one because it is truly a mystery. The main character, Stacy, is one that you can really identity with.

Forever Valentine by Rose Pressey
I really love Rose Pressey’s books and this story is no exception. Halloween LaVeau is one tough cookie who seems to always be in the middle. She has to solve the mystery of the cookies before someone gets really hurt including herself.

Romance By The Bay by Tonya Kappes
This story really pulled me in and that could be because I am an animal lover. But I just loved Drea and how she put the animals before her own happiness. This is one of those heartwarming stories that you just want the ending to turn out to be wonderful.

My Furry Valentine by Renee George
This story grabbed me right from the start and kept me reading without stopping. I liked it so much I went out and bought the first book to the series that this one is a spin off of. The town of Peculiar is a very interesting place and I am sure I will enjoy reading more from this author.

Wow, I was so excited to see this boxed set collection of my favorite authors! What a surprise! I've only read one story so far but thought I would leave a review and add to it after each one I read. Hope that's ok with everyone?

The Vampire's Valentine Surprise by Kristen Painter I give 5 Stars
Ooh I just loved this story. It can be read as a stand alone, as all of the books in this series can. If you haven't read any of the Nocturne Falls series, you are missing out on a real treat! The couple in this story, Hugh and Delaney, are the couple in the very first book of the series. Their book is called The Vampire's Mail Order Bride. Anyway, I was so excited to see their return in this story. I hate spoilers so I won't say the most exciting part of the story. But here you get to meet a mixture of a lot of the characters in the world. Everyone is at a bake off competition and all the talk of different desserts has made me want to eat cake! The love Hugh and Delaney feel for each other just makes me Feel so warm and fuzzy. You can find all the different characters and lots more in Kristen's other books in the Nocturne Falls series.

A Bourbon Street Valentine by Deanna Chase 5 Stars
I just love this authors books. All of her series are great. This one is from her Jade Calhoun series. It had some moments where I was just laughing out loud. It really left me wanting more. As much as I disliked a Eros in it, at the end I couldn't help but love him. This was such a great idea. It's set up similar to The Bachelor. I was cracking up. I'm wanting to say more but don't want to spoil it. You will love it! I want more of all the characters.

I am a big fan of the authors in this book of short romantic reads. In Deanna Chase's story we get a story about Kat, Jade's best friend. This is a funny tale of Cupid creating his own little contest to get a wife. It is so funny! Then we get the most romantic end to the story for Kat and Lucien which I will not give away but recommend highly that you read and see this great couple get their happy start.
In Liz Schulte story we get a Knead to Know short with Maggie having to sort out Cupid's love life. Did not see that one coming since meeting Maggie we have seen her struggle with her own love life, first with Baker, now with Boone and Phoenix. I personally love seeing the contradictions in Phoenix being who he is with him also being Jinn. If you have not decided whether you prefer Boone or Phoenix this book will not make it easier to decide between the two but I tend to lean toward Phoenix and love seeing his romantic side.
I am also a huge fan of Ann Charles and her laugh out loud Deadwood Series and even now just thinking about it think I need purple boots.I have been curious about Aunt Zoe and Reid since they introduced him into the series and surprised at Aunt Zoe's reaction to him. I was excited to hear their story and learn more about Aunt Zoe and cannot wait for more.
I actually have really enjoyed them all and want more. If you have not read these authors this is the perfect set of stories to introduce ou to some wonderful quirky characters.

I got this book because of Kristen Painter’s A Vampire's Valentine Surprise, and my review only refers to this short story. In short, I loved it. I would highly recommend reading the Nocturne falls series in order: The Vampire's Mail Order Bride (Nocturne Falls #1), The Werewolf Meets His Match (Nocturne Falls #2), The Gargoyle Gets His Girl (Nocturne Falls, #3), The Professor Woos The Witch (Nocturne Falls, #4), and The Witch’s Halloween Hero (Nocturne Falls #4.5) in Spell of the Ball Anthology, The Werewolf's Christmas Wish (Nocturne Falls #4.75) in Hex the Halls Anthology and The Vampire’s Fake Fiancée (Nocturne Falls #5). And when you get to this little gem, you will love it as much as I did. We get to have glimpse of Delaney and Hugh a bit after their story. They are in love as ever and it was great to meet them again. I can’t wait for the next book. Thank you Kristen Painter.

Honestly, I purchased this anthology for the sole purpose of reading more of Delaney and Hugh's story in The Vampire's Valentine Surprise by Kristen Painter. I love the Nocturne Fall series and I couldn't resist the chance to find out more about what's going on in that world. Delaney enters a Valentine's Day baking contest, but the biggest prize isn't the trophy for the winner!
Aside from the Nocturne Falls short story there are short stories by ELEVEN other authors (including Michelle Bardsley, Rose Pressey, and Tonya Kappes). I can't think of a better way to spend $.99 and while away a couple of hours curled up in my favorite chair.

I loved this collection of short stories! Most of the stories are within a series, but you don't have to read the series to know what is going on. I think in some cases these stories were of secondary characters. It did make me want to read the rest of the series of several of these. All of the stories are good, but a few had horrible editing (one of them I don't think was edited at all). However, still good stories. If you haven't read the other two anthologies in this series for Halloween and Christmas you should pick those up too!

Disasters abound…With eleven sassy and cute paranormal valentine shorts, Kiss and Spell is a treat!

A Bourbon Street Valentine
Kat, Jade’s best friend, is off to Cupid’s Ball…only she may get more than she bargained for! Funny and charming, Kat’s story fits perfectly with the Jade Calhoun series…perhaps at some point she might get her own story.

Short and sweet, Kiss and Spell is perfect for a quick read before life gets real. Kiss and Spell was provided by one of the authors for an honest review.

I bought this book for the Kristen Painter novella only. It was worth every penny.

Delaney our favorite confectioner of Nocturne Falls has entered into the Valentine's Day Bakeoff. When things don't go as planned, we get the entertainment of a slew of our favorites from previous stories as they try to figure out what is going on. It's not until the very end that we get quite a big surprise.

This novella was such a cute story and great entertainment. Kristen didn't let us down with this novella and I am one very happy reader.

I was only familiar with one of the authors in this anthology so was hoping to find some new ones. I wasn't very impressed with the stories. Out of ten unfamiliar authors, there were three I might look into.

On a grammatical note, for the love of all things good, could indie authors and their editors please learn the difference between compliment and complement? Here's a link.

I bought this book for the Nocturne Falls short.

I love getting to see all of the Nocturne Falls holiday celebrations. This time it's the Valentine's Day Bake Off. And I always like to check in with the characters from previous books. This story also introduces a new character who I think will star in a later book. But I knew exactly what was going to happen so it wasn't as much fun as it could have been.

I got this anthology for the Kristen Painter story and it was well worth getting! Loved the story and was happy for Hugh & Delaney! The story also seems to have introduced a possible new character for the series and I'm wondering who she'll get set up with! I'm kinda hoping it's Julian!

This is not the sort of book I usually read. A few were not to bad. A couple were erotic. I do not like books like that. Some were written poorly. I am trying one as a new author, so my not be all bad.

A funny, romantic collection of stories. My favorites were the Kristen Painter and Liz Shulte tales, but, really, they were all fantastic! Perfect, if you're looking for light, amusing reads that will put a smile on your face.

I would have liked to give this anthology 5 stars, but some of the stories had problems with editing. Things like the wrong words, misspellings, etc. It was too much for me. Other than that, they were charming short stories.

this was a fun and cute Valentine's day anthology. I enjoyed revisiting characters I love and meeting new ones who I am looking forward to reading more of. 5/5 Bloody Fangs
