He longed for the fury of the mating fever.
She had the magic to touch his dragon heart.

Unlike the other Nox Incendi dragons, Torch Dorado never sought his treasure, the hoard that would bring peace to his inner beast. But when he hunts down Anjali Herne, he may have found the first scintillating jewel to tame his dragon heart.

But Anjali is a threat to the security of all dragonkin, and he’ll have to make her believe he is not the fire-breathing, maiden-munching monster of fairy tales. Well, there may be a little munching and a lot of fire…

I grew up reading SFF, buying the biggest books I could with my chore money. While I loved the action, adventure, and exciting worlds, most of those stories were missing…kissing! Now I read and write paranormal romance and science fiction romance which I think mix the best of all worlds. I also write urban fantasy romance as Jessa Slade and sexy contemporary romance as Jenna Dales.

I spend most of my time at my computer thinking about stories, in my garden thinking about stories, or walking my dog thinking about stories. Hmm, I think there’s a theme… 🙂

So, while this book doesn't suffer from middlebookitis, it does progress the story and have it's own action. It sadly also focuses on my least favorite of the trio of heroines. Anjali is, well, an idiot. She probably really belongs behind the counter at a headshop. But, push through it as Bane & Esme's installment is next.

I can’t believe I didn’t follow up with the next book in the Masters of the Flame series! I read Rave and Piper’s story but I missed Torch’s HEA. I am glad I rediscovered Torch’s story because the third book in the trilogy was also published so I can go from this one to the next. How fun!

Torch’s story was worth the wait. I actually had to re-read Dragon Fever so I could get a refresher about all the secondary characters. Doing so rekindled the excitement of the world of dragons that Ms. Jade created. I was more than ready to jump into Dragon Fate to find out what was going on with Anjali because she wasn’t very likable in the first book. After reading this novel, I get it. I understand why she did what she did and I was actually relieved to find out that she was a victim too. Not that it’s a good thing, it’s not, but I understand her choices – she based them on what she knew and believed. The reality was quite the shock for the heroine. I had my suspicions but I never would have guessed just to what level of depravity the person was willing to go. Anjali ends up being a stronger individual than I expected. That’s a good thing too.

The mystery/suspense comes from the danger, the escapes, and the battle. Once the main characters, and supporting cast, finally discover what was going on and who was behind it all, things really took off. Again, I wasn’t surprised that the villain was evil, nor was I shocked that he wouldn’t let go, wouldn’t stop. I was, however, stunned by the scope of it all.

This is also an erotic romance story because the verbiage and actions are typical for the genre. Those sexy scenes were definitely well written. There’s some internal conflict with Anjali that causes some hiccups in the progression of the romance and I guess that worked. It’s when Torch and the heroine get together – lots of finger, lip and teasing action eventually leads to them both being satisfied, more than once. Nothing like a commanding dragon in the bedroom. *grin*

If I were to take out the sexcapades in the novel, this book would still fly because the plot, character development and action scenes are strong enough to keep those pages flipping. Torch and Anjali’s chemistry is just icing on the cake.

Dragon Fate was worth the wait, the read and the time spent. I like Ms. Jade’s dragons. They’re alpha, sexy and fun. I’m looking forward to finding out how Bale is going to get cured and if the bad guy finally gets his comeuppance. After reading this story, he deserves whatever he gets.

Unsatisfying shifter romance

MY RATING SYSTEM
5 stars--WOW
4 stars--would read again
3 stars--was good, won't read again
2 stars--read it, but didn't enjoy it
1 star--didn't finish, it was so awful

Do I need to read books before this one: yes
Cliffhanger: a little

SUMMARY
Torch questions Anjali for 3 days, culminating in taking her flying through a thunderstorm. All she knows is Ashcraft wants ichor. She'd hoped that the warlock and the dragons would fight and she'd be able to sneak herself and her friends away to safety. “When I was a kid, [my uncle] stole magic from a witch doctor in New Orleans. The witch doctor sent a dragon to retrieve it, but the dragon killed my mother instead, and that’s why we left for Salt Lake City. But bayou magic isn’t happy in the desert. The head shop wasn’t much more than t-shirts and a front for drug dealing. Until Ashcraft got his claws in Uncle Gwain. But Ashcraft was only biding his time until my uncle owed him, then he revealed that he wanted a dragon. They were going to use me as the bait.” “You?” “I know, right? They quickly figured out I wasn’t…ideal.” “If you are so sure no one can stop Ashcraft, why not let me try? Since you hate dragons anyway. Stop running away. Help me fight him.”

Torch takes Anjali to his aerie. She tells him Ashcraft admired her art, said he'd help her get into galleries. She introduced him to Esme, then realized they made the better couple. “By the time I realized my uncle was in debt to him and Esme was enthralled, Ashcraft had decided I could be useful too. To get my uncle and Esme free, all I had to do was kill a dragon. You know the rest.”

Rave argues with Torch that Anjali is a witch and can't be trusted. Meanwhile, Anjali has a nightmare that Ashcraft is drowning her with freezing water. Torch resuscitates her, she vomits water that evaporates like dry ice.

Torch takes Anjali to be with her friends. Anjali helps Esme through a nightmare, sees she's dying. The girls take Esme to Bale to heal her. The engagement ring is made not of a diamond but of psilocybin mushrooms that let Ashcraft control her. Bale says to leave Esme with him because Ashcraft’s magic can't get into his cavern.

EVALUATION
This story wasn't clear. They both want to help the only family they have (she her friends, he the Dorados), so they confront her uncle and Ashcraft. The rest of it is murky. The oasis sounds lovely. Salt Lake City and the Great Salt Lake aren't well researched (I live near there). We get only 1 motorcycle ride and none of her bayou magic. And other than the great sex and their loyalty to their adopted families, I don't see their attraction to each other.

I hope the third book is better. I much preferred Blair Babylon's Dragon's Den Casino series.
RECOMMENDATION
Those who've read book 1.

FAVORITE QUOTES
“Could you…” “Could I what?” “Point that thing somewhere else? I’m afraid it’s going to go off.”

A lordly gentleman wouldn’t look. But a beast would stare its fill.

You’re really a vegetarian?” “Do dragons really eat villagers?” “Not when there’s a perfectly seared steak.”

“I slept with him.” “Did he hurt you?” She gritted her teeth. “Would that have made it better? If I’d been frightened and innocent?” Torch glared at her. “No. But I would kill him slower.” No one had ever threatened to kill on her behalf. That was criminal, wrong. And kind of sweet.

POSSIBLE TRIGGERS (SPOILERS)
Sex: multiple scenes
Language: 31 F words, 5 Lord's name in vain, 7 S words
Violence: fight with guns

CRITIQUE (SPOILERS)
What happens if Torch crosses paths with his true solarys in the future? Blair Babylon has a better storyline for the possibility of the dragon coming across his fated mate when he's already in love with someone.

Much Better Than The First Book

So I've finally finished this one and I was not disappointed! I thoroughly enjoyed Anjali and Torch's story although I had some gripes. I felt their story was much more believable and sexy versus Piper and Rave's 'love at first sight' nonsense. The adventure they had was just wonderful and really allowed them to connect and for Torch to see her as the treasure she was to him. Beautiful! However...some things did irritate me.
1. If Anjali is creole, why are her nipples 'red'? Most creole people are heavily mixed with African and would therefore look more black and would have dark nipples. Pretty much, by the end of the book I just changed Anjali into a white woman with dreads in my head and it made more sense.
2. Dreadlocks or locs, as they should be called, are not supposed to be washed every shower or every time someone enters water. Describing them like loose straight hair was beyond irritating, especially as for a black woman who used to wear her hair in locs such as myself.
3. I get it was for plot points but why is the character who's skin is darker, making them more poc than the other two, the 'promiscuous one'? It feeds into the jezebel stereotype that black women constantly fight against and it didn't sit well with me at all.
4. Why was she so comfortable having unprotected sex with this perfect stranger compared to Piper? Yes, plot point and all but it just made me upset that the darker friend is just immediately 'the strong jezebel warrior' type.
Those were just some gripes but I gave the story five stars because aside from those issues, there wasn't anything else negative to say. Less Piper, more Anjali please! And now, I will be purchasing the third book to get my fill of Bale, my boo. Great story!

Better than the last but...

No surprise that Torch is attracted to Anjali and vice versa. What is surprising is that Anjali has some spunk to her rather than the DOA character we meet in Dragon Fever.

What worked...

Torch. The banter between Torch and Anjali is cute and unexpected.

What didn't work...

"Ash-hole"...for some reason apparently the author thought this was funny but instead it was plain annoying to read. I prefer the proper adjective of a$$hole. It felt like something was missing, although I'm not sure what. The story is predictable with no surprises. As feisty as Anjali is, she is just as insecure as Piper and also has the "woe is me" outlook on life too. I'm guessing although Esme is supposed to be pretty and rich, she will have the same self-loathing personality as Piper and Anjali I'm sure.

Fortunately, I'm about finished with the Masters of the Flame series...

On my Were Scale of Hotness, 2 stars.

Magical, hot and suspenseful

Torch is the Nox Incendi dragon clan enforcer, but he feels unworthy. So much so that he has not even begun to amass his dragon hoard, and doesn't think he deserves- or needs - a solarys (fated mate). He is too young yet to suffer the fatal petralys curse that is killing off his kind. When Anjali arrives at the Keep, he has to rethink things, especially because she has tried to kill him. What does a lost voodoo princesss have to give the mighty dragon who defeats her? EVERYTHING he doesn't know he needs. Super sexy, full of snappy repartee, sleuthing and surprises, this is the second in Elsa Jade's Masters of the Flame trilogy of dragon shifter romances, and a worthy sequel to the first fine story. Can't wait for book 3.

The story continues, and it’s even hotter than the book before it!! Torch and Anjali are both stubborn, damaged, and completely against falling for each other. They can only agree on one thing— the ash-hole must be taken down. They both have something to prove, and obstacles to overcome.
They must also fight an attraction that neither of them expected, let alone even wanted.
I love this story, and world. These characters are addictive, and this overall series has me desperately seeking more. I can’t wait to see what happens next!!

We first met Torch Dorado and Anjali Herne in book one, where Torch is a tough, by the books enforcer for the Keep Casino... and all of Dragons and Anjali might just be the bad guy. In their story, the must overcome their tragic pasts and come together to stop an evil warlock... and save Esme before it’s too late. Enemies to soulmates, this story is scorching and you won’t be able to put it down.

Anjali and Torch continue the fight

Read the three books in order. Each love story is complete but the overall story arc takes all three books to finish. Torch is the head of security for the Keep and Anjali is the best friend who brings SO much trouble to the story. Anjali is one tough lady, but like all of us, she needs love and belief in herself too. Good continuation of the plot.

Masters of the Flame (2)

Torch is the Nox Incendi enforcer. Anjali is the girl who betrayed them and her friends. He needs to know what she does to protect the dragons and help find a cure for her friend Esme. She isn't gonna be easy to get information from, she has been used and lied to for years, plus she's scared. His Dragon is also interested in her, but she hates dragons, her uncle told her one killed her mother. Complicated? only a lot.

Great story I enjoyed very much !!!

What a wonderful next story of Anj and Torch !!
We get to read about some backstory for them both , and as the story moves along , we get some questions answered. But still the mystery goes along !! Wonderful characters and a good versus evil kind of vibe. Loved it !!
On to the next, Bane , the King and poor Esme get their story.

Can’t believe this series came out 8 years ago and I’m just finding it now. Seriously, these novellas are so fun and steamy and these men? Seriously, why can’t dragon-shifters be real? Loved Torch and Anji’s dynamic, loved the way he was constantly building her up and believed in her when no one else did. A great second installment!

A flamethrower

A flamethrower is just a sparkler compared to this hot as well dragon male. If human men were a tenth as hot or as good as a dragon we wouldn't need to read, or would we because Elsa Jade can write a story like it was magic.

There's plot, which I'm interested in, and a lot of sex (probably more than I'd have liked). Overall I enjoyed the book and since the plot is overarching the three books I'll likely finish the series.

Almost a cliffhanger…

Anjali’s story told and settled…but too many details left hanging. Good for the middle book in a trilogy, just didn’t feel complete. I think there too much of the king’s story twined into this plot without ending both stories. Still very worth reading.

Dragon Fate Elsa Jade

Reviewed by SFF Dragon

Trust is hard won for a dragon shifter who finds his treasure in the heroine who desperately needs to get her feisty back.

'Dragon Fate' is the second book in the Masters of the Flame series of stand alone paranormal romances by Elsa Jade, one of my favourite authors, and another terrific, action packed, adrenaline fuelled treat from her pen. She never disappoints and I absolutely loved this story featuring an apparently defeated heroine who's been walking a dangerous line between darkness and light, magic and mayhem, and desperately needs to get her feisty back, a hero who spends his life protecting his clan, and now her too, a few things you never thought you'd find in Vegas as well as an imaginative and believable explanation for why dragons aren't picked up by radar together with a really special happily ever after that brought tears to my eyes. As always, this book is well written in the third person with varying points of view, my favourite kind, and had me on the edge of my seat from heart-stopping beginning to an end which left me with a goofy smile on my face. Although written as a stand alone, and there's enough background that it can easily be read as one, the story is a continuation from the first book, 'Dragon Fever' and I'd recommend reading it first. 'Dragon Fate' is also part of the new multi-author Mating Fever Collection of stand alone paranormal romances which has taken over from the Mating Season Collection, so if you're a fan, you'll love these too.

A castle in Vegas? Sure, why not? It'd fit right in there with the Eiffel Tower and the Great Pyramid, but The Keep isn't on 'the strip'. Owned and run by the small and endangered Nox Incendi clan of dragon shifters, it's built into the mountains on the edge of the city and caters to the elite of the elite as well as the odd bachelorette party. But this particular bachelorette party wasn't all it appeared to be. Desperate to save the ever dwindling life of her friend Esme, and with the life of her only remaining family, her Uncle Gwain, under threat, Anjali Herne has been suckered into a dangerous plan to kill a dragon for it's ichor, the fluid it secretes to heal wounds, by Esme's fiance, the truly evil Lars Ashcraft. But thanks to Piper, her only other friend, the plan comes crashing out of the sky, literally, in a ball of flames when the plane being used to escape is attacked by Piper's mate, Rave Dorado, and Anjali is captured and imprisoned by Torch, head of security for both the Nox Incendi dragons and their fantastical hotel. Now she's been stuck in a cell, a very nice cell, but still a cell, somewhere between a rock and a hard place for the last three days with no way out that she can see. Or so she thinks....

Torch Dorado is a relatively young dragon who isn't suffering the symptoms of the Petralys curse yet and because of his past, he hasn't bothered to collect a horde either. He hasn't bothered with the idea of having a Solarys, the heart of a dragon's treasure because he doesn't believe there is one for him, but things are about to change. Torch has come to the end of his patience with Anjali Herne. He can't get her to talk and she's absolutely convinced that dragons are truly evil fire-breathing, maiden munching creatures who capture and rape virgins for amusement. In a last-ditch and desperate attempt to get her to talk, he takes her to the highest tower in The Keep and throws them both off the top into a raging storm. If she won't tell him what she knows, he can't help her, or her friend Esme, get free of Ashcraft and breaking her seems to be the only option left to jar her tongue loose and make her talk....

What a truly fantastic addition to the new series. I absolutely loved it but without giving spoilers it's really hard to tell you more about this terrific story. Despite starting from completely opposite points of view and positions of total distrust, Torch and Anjali are drawn to each other and as the story unfolds, bringing surprising revelations, startling truths and a potential cure for the Petralys with it, their lives become intertwined in the battle against Ashcraft. I was given a copy by the author in exchange for an honest review and as usual for Elsa Jade's books, it's full of humour and really great characters, some of whom appeared in her Wolves of Angels Rest series, a spectacular setting, action packed story line that will keep you on the edge of your seat and your adrenaline pumping from beginning to end, a mystery to solve, a feisty heroine and a determined hero, lots of steamy bits and a wonderful happily ever after. What more could you want? I'd love to give this book more than the 5 stars I'm limited to and it's definitely on the list of books I'd rescue if the house was burning down. I can't wait to read the next one.
